OpenSUSE Hardware :: USB Stick Does Not Open When Icon Clicked

Dec 21, 2009

I installed 11.2 Gnome 32 bit version and I notice that when I insert a USB stick (8G) that it either will not open, or it takes several minutes; on another distro, the same stick is instantly recognised, and a window opens immediately; I went back and booted up the liveCD; I notice now the liveCD does this too; (I now see a window has opened from the USB stick after about 3mins); is there some way I can investigate; or describe this behaviour of the system ?

Ubuntu :: Put Icon In The System Tray And Run Bash Command When Clicked?

Jul 29, 2010

I am trying to find a way to put an icon in the system tray and run a bash command every time I click on the icon.

Purpose: I want to set up a system tray icon that will hide/unhide the desktop when clicked, much as would the standard desktop panel plugin for the various panel apps like lxpanel, gnome panel, etc.

Why don't I just use a panel app?

I am using a very reduced install of Ubuntu Lucid oriented towards first time PC users on very old hardware, using Openbox as the window manager and Tint2 with lxlauncher instead of a panel, the latter both compiled from latest source for some slight customization. Tint2 is a taskbar that also features a built in clock applet and system tray which I have chosen after examining basically all other alternatives and chosen for its light footprint and customization. It gives me everything I need except a single click hide/show-desktop feature or a halt/reboot/logout menu. lxlauncher is a very lightweight alternative to the Ubuntu Netbook Remix netbook-launcher (and/or netbook-launcher-efl) package that conforms to the freedesk specifications and occupies all free deskspace other than tint2, under all other windows. I used the freedesk specs to set up a "shutdown" menu category and created shutdown.desktop reboot.desktop and logout.desktop files in the category to add that feature, using dbus commands for the first two and 'openbox --exit' for the latter.

I set the openbox config to open all app windows maximized with no decoration, so each app takes up the whole screen other than tint2 and can only be closed by right clicking on its icon in tint2 or by its file->Quit menu.

This gives me a kind of OLPC for grown ups with no computer experience. In other words, for people who don't know what a desktop or window is. This is similar to the Ubuntu Netbook Remix except that in UNR they superimpose the window decorations over the gnome panel so you can still close the window.

However, the one problem here is that to see lxlauncher when one has several apps running, one has to click on each app in tint2 to minimize it. I would like to add a system tray icon to make this possible with one click without adding too much more overhead to the existing setup.

Here is a screen cap of the desktop:

BTW, I will use wmctrl to test the desktop visibility state and toggle it using this bash command: test 'wmctrl -m | grep ON' && wmctrl -k on || wmctrl -k off

how to get an icon in the system tray and run the above command when clicked will be appreciated

P.S. I've looked at 'zenity --notification --listen' but running a command when the icon is clicked in this case is a pending feature for the app and not yet implemented. My last resort will be to learn C and try that.

Ubuntu Networking :: Network Manager Was Unmanaged. Got That Message When Clicked The Icon At The Right-bottom Bar?

May 8, 2010

language-pack-en, language-pack-en-base, language-pack-kde-en, language-pack-kde-en-base, libsoup2.4-1, libsoup-gnome2.4-1, pm-utils today on my laptop. Some hours later, I had to force the computer to shut down by pressing the power button, since it got totally lagged when I started it after an automatic sleep due to no power left. I started it, logged in and saw that the network manager was unmanaged. I got that message when I clicked the icon at the right-bottom bar.

So, I tried with "ifconfig" in a Terminal, as root.Therefor, I did "sudo ifconfig eth1 up", and the same with eth0. The network manager did not work anyways. I killed it using "sudo killall -9 knetworkmanager" and started it with "knetworkmanager" from the Terminal. The icon got removed and it appeared again, but nothing changed - it said "network manager disables", as before.I logged off and select "Restart X server" from the login screen. I logged in again and tried. Didn't work. When I restarted my computer I saw that eth0 and eth1 was down again. I took them up and then I checked the hardware settings. I saw that I could use either KNetworkManager, Fake Net or Wicd. I tried to locate if I had Wicd or Fake Net installed, but I hadn't.

Neither the wireless or the wired connection works now. I'd like to know how to fix the Network Manager, or whatever is wrong. Also, I'd like to know if I can install Wicd using a CD or something. Maybe Wicd works better, I have no idea. I'm using Kubuntu 10.04, the final release.

OpenSUSE Wireless :: "Secure" Icon On Open Network?

Jul 1, 2010

My wireless is working well enough for me to post this, but does go down from time to time (still troubleshooting the cause.. may be a Cisco Anyconnect VPN client, or Amarok). From time to time the connection will just drop out, and I will have to reboot to get it to reconnect. In these times, dhcpcd eth1 ends up timing out, and if I look at the networkmanager log, that also shows a timeout. wllist scan will show the nearby APs, though, and iwlist will show the card as "connected" to an ap (ssid and all), but no pings will work and dhcpcd will continue to say it times out.Anyhow, I noticed that most of the time when I do a scan in Knetworkmanager, the attached screen appears - I am concerned, because I know that these are open APs, and also that it is showing quite a few too many. If I completely wipe Knetworkmanager and reinstall, are there any gotchas that might be worth knowing about?

OpenSUSE Network :: Clicked Firefox And Received A "no Server" Message

Jul 19, 2010

I thought I would give Linux a try so I installed Opensuse 11.3.

I used the automatic setup and accepted all default settings on a new HD. At end of installation I clicked Firefox and received a "no server" message.

The only info I found was in KDE Chapt. 17 by Lauri Watts. She says that if I have IP, gateway, submask, and dns numbers, Internet connection is easy but she tells nothing about using the numbers. I have those numbers.

How do I get online?

I have a no-proxy, static service.

Why-oh-why-oh-why would an installation end without an online connection? Or at least easy-to-find instructions to get online?

I had to disconnect the new Linux HD and connect to this old Windows HD to contact you.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Won't Hold The Setting After Have Clicked "apply" And Left The Audio Setup?

Aug 16, 2011

Everything else seems to work, but there is a problem with sound. I have a Xonar DS card that is recognised by the system and which works when I test it under the sound section of Yast.I have the Packman repository and Libdvdcss repository listed in Yast.However, no sound from any application/cd/dvd/internet or on boot.I've noticed that, in KMix,f I go into the mixer there is settings option -> audio setup. Under this there is a speaker option which offers the choice of the source of sound to the speakers - from my sound card or from the internal Intel sound - which does not work, hence my sound card. WhenI choose my sound card the test L & R speaker sounds work fine - but it won't hold the setting after I have clicked "apply" and left the audio setup. It then reverts to the internal sound chip and, lo and behold, no sound is now produced

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Rhythmbox Panel Icon - One Click To Open?

I used to be able to open the Rhythmbox window by just clicking the Rhythmbox icon in the notification area. Now in Lucid it brings up a menu (isn't that what right click is for??) and I have to select "Show Rhythmbox", and sometimes I accidentally click on "Quit" and I have to start Rhythmbox again. It's a real PITA. Is there any way to make it the way it was before? I've looked at the Rhythmbox options and can't find anything about it. (Why do GNOME applications always have barely any options?)

Ubuntu :: Minimize Open Terminal Window To An Icon On My Taskbar?

Aug 1, 2010

I have a desktop computer and a NAS, running Kubuntu & Ubuntu. I use WOL to wake the NAS and then mount the drives (NFS) on my desktop.
I've placed an icon on my KDE desktop which wakes the NAS and mounts the drives, this works great, but I've set it to run in terminal so I can enter the password for mounting the drives. This leaves me with an open window which I don't want to close because the NAS is set to shutdown 15 minutes after ssh logout.
My question is how can I minimize the open terminal window to an icon on my taskbar?

Ubuntu :: Setup A Unique Icon For Each USB Drive AND Have Their Window Pop Open?

Nov 22, 2010

I have a pencil case I carry with a USB hub and 9 USB sticks in it. I like their unique icons and their root windows to pop up upon insertion. If this is answered elsewhere, I looked several times in several ways on google and these forums.

I tried this:
The autorun.inf file on the USB root written this way:
[Autorun]
Action=Start Blue512MB
Icon=BlueFlashIconBlueFlashIcon.ico
Label=Blue512MB

Then put the BlueFlashIcon.ico icon image in a folder titled BlueFlashIcon In Ubuntu (Mav) I get the new personal icon image for that USB stick appearing on the desktop but the USB root window won't pop open automatically when the stick is inserted. I have to dig to the desktop, find it and click it or go into Places on the menu. If when I put nothing special on the flash, no autorun.inf, no icon image, then the window for the USB pops open upon insertion, which I like, but only get the generic icon that looks the same as all 9 external drives. The labels are unique but icons offer faster recognition over reading labels, when they are needed, much nicer to use~

Ideas? Do I have to use .svg icons or another kind of text file? How do I set up a unique icon for each USB drive AND have the window pop up upon insertion?

Banshee will not run when I click its icon in the launcher. The little arrow appears next to it, and then nothing happens. I'm running Ubuntu 11.04. I ran it in the terminal and got this (x's inserted for username):

Code:
[Info 06:10:11.264] Running Banshee 2.0.0: [Ubuntu 11.04 (linux-gnu, x86_64) @ 2011-06-28 05:39:10 UTC]

Another piece of information that may be relevant: this started happening immediately after I installed a GStreamer plugin, specifically the one for aac, xvid, mpeg2, and faad. I've since uninstalled this package, but Banshee still will not load.
