OpenSUSE Hardware :: USB Drive Naming - Used To Be "disc" Now Its - 413a6509-bf
Dec 28, 2009
I have a question about USB drive naming.
My Maxtor external drive used to ALWAYS be named "disc" when I'd plug it into my SuSE (11.x) installs no matter which machine. Now the name is "413a6509-bf73-4945-a53b-311d8f7c6307".
How do I set the default USB name back to "disc" so that the path is once again, "/media/disk/myfile.txt".
I've got backup scripts written that use this path.
I've compared fstabs between an install the uses a default name of "disc" and one that uses the long string and the fstabs are identical.

My K3B doesn't seem to recognise a blank CD in the drive tray.
I'm on OS 11.2, K3B & codecs from 11.2 packman, and 11.2 KDE4 factory (ie kde4.4).
When I put a blank cd in, the kde4 device notifier shows me a blank cd and offers to create a project with k3b. I create a data project & click burn, the burn dialog has a greyed out Burn button, and the media selector dropdown says please insert an empty or appendable medium.
If I eject & re-insert the disc at this point, the device notifier again tells me I've inserted a blank cd, k3b's dialog freezes for a second (seems to notice something has happened) but still does not list my cd and remains as it was before.
k3bsetup reports no problems. Burning from commandline (cdrecord) works fine. Dolphin also knows about the blank cd. I've burned to these discs before with no problems (K3B used to work quite recently, perhaps 4 or 5 weeks ago). Updates have been applied in the meantime.

I have 4 SATA hard drives, and they are named sda, sdb, sdc and sdd. My problem is that the drives always randomly switch between these names when I restart my system. It is not really a problem as far as mounting, because I use the UUID option. I'm using the sensors applet to monitor the temps of the hard drives, and I can never tell which one is which, because the drive names are always changing. Is there any way to have the drives named the same way every time?

I just installed Fedora 12 and grub is not working for me. I have 2 physical drives, and installed Fedora on sdb (win xp is on sda). I picked the option that the computer booted from sdb when I installed. I then went and switched the boot order in the bios so that the computer would boot from sdb. Now Fedora boots fine, but when I try to boot into windows I just get a blinking cursor. I tried booting to windows manually (via picking that drive from the bios options) and that works fine.
I tried to edit grub.conf, but wasn't sure how to address the appropriate hard drive. How do I know what to fill in? The linux drive is (hd0,0), and grub tried to make windows (hd1,0). How do I know what to put in (hdx,y) for the windows partition? Grub tells me I have a /boot partition so everything is relative to that.If I'm way off base, please let me know. Is there a way I can just re-run grub so that it looks for everything anew? I also looked at device.map and sda is hd0.---------- Post added at 02:42 PM CDT ---------- Previous post was at 02:37 PM CDT ----------If it helps, this is my grub.conf:

OpenSUSE 11.2 x86_64
KDE SC 4.4.3
Linux 2.6.34-rc6-29-desktop (from KERNEL:HEAD)
HAL 0.5.13-4.2.1
udisks 1.0.0.git20100224-11.1
ASRock G43Twins-FullHD LGA 775 Intel G43 Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
Samsung 22X DVDR DVD Burner Black SATA Model SH-S223Q (connected via SATA. detected as: /dev/sr0)
Discs are read by the drive when inserted (they are spun and the LED light on the drive lights up) but nothing happens after that.
I disconnected the SATA cable and tried a new SATA cable on a different SATA port and also tried a different SATA power cable but that did not fix anything.

Not sure if anyone uses floppy drives anymore much. I know that most machines don't come with them anymore unless you ask for one.One of my machines [Machine # 2] has a floppy and I have never had the occaision to use it under linux [opensuse 11.2 currently]. Until now that is! I have about 30 floppies that I need to transfer the data from. I am able to mount the floppy drive and take data off the currently inserted floppy, but if I want to insert another floppy and remove the data from it, I must unmount and remount the floppy everytime. There is an entry in fstab:
/dev/fd0 /media/floppy auto noauto,user 0 0
and a mount point in media [/media/floppy] Is there something else I need to have in the fstab line for the floppy so that it will read automatically everytime I insert a disk?

I have just installed 11.3 x64. The installation went fine and worked for the first few hours. I ran the online update tool, and now it cannot find grub unless the installation disc is inserted and I select the "boot from hard disc" option.
I have read about the problem of the root partition being back, but not sure that's it.
sda1 - swap
sda2 - /
sda3 - /home
There used to be a repair tool in the installation disks. I could not find that in this media. Is that still available?

I am using a QLA2462 and have got FC storage attached through a brocade switch. As soon when I add more storage for this server on this switch my device naming shifts and this new storage comes in between e.g. as sdb, and the other 2 go to sdc and sdd. I looked around but I can't find a good solution for SuSe 11.2.

I've tried to boot my Ubuntu 10.04 from my disc drive, and installing it in Windows like an app, but every time I do my screen looks like it went bad. The top two inches are the way it should be but the rest is white, and I can't see anything. Is there some setting on my comp I need to adjust or did I just get a bad disc? The disc doesn't have a scratch on it and I've cleaned twice now.

My girlfriend has a dual boot netbook I set up for her with Vista + 9.10. Her internet service went down yesterday temporarily and she was messing around with the computer to get back online and somehow booted into the Windows Rescue Partition and began the Windows Restore process, then turned the computer off during the middle of the restore process. It's her only computer and she lives 1800 miles away. And since it's a netbook there's no optical drive.
When she boots up now, the netbook goes straight into Grub Rescue mode. I got her to try most of the commands for Grub Rescue, but most of them come back as "Unknown Command". The "LS" command works though, and she was able to get a list of partitions displayed.Does anyone know of some commands she could use try to boot back into 9.10 (assuming it's still there)? Or even boot into Windows? Specifically, is there a simple command that could be combined with "LS" to specify a partition and try to boot into it?

See "10.4 synaptic package manager error" thread, for more details. Basically, I want to find a way to save my data. To do that, I need to figure out what exactly went wrong. Any of u who really wanna help, see that thread and the 1 mentioned in that thread, in order to extract a reason for all this madness from carefully examining every erroneous step.

I'm trying to get my work's infrastructure built at home before I go up there and show the boss. It is as follows: VMware esxi installed on the server with:
Windows server 2008
Ubuntu 10.04 server
I've got VMware installed. And I have spent the past 7 hours trying to figure out how to manage it. I found out that vsphere has not nor will ever be supported for Linux; which was my first problem.
Second Problem So I had to dig around for a spare Windows 7 dvd. To my UN-surprise it blue screened before it even got to the Windows installer.
Third Problem So I dug around for my Windows XP disc. Wouldn't find my sata hard drive and I wasn't about to dig around for a floppy drive and disk, in order to install it.
Fourth Problem I remembered that I had a dual boot of Windows 7 downstairs and proceeded to download and install vsphere. It wouldn't install because of some updates that needed to be installed. I installed them and got vsphere installed as well. However upon connecting to my vmware esxi, there was yet another error that had to do with some update. I found out that the error had been existent since 2009 and for some reason NO ONE at VMware has fixed it....

My wife's XP has crashed and I need to save files. I've discovered the command to mount the hard drive - unfortunately I need to force the mount, but I can't do it because I have to be in root. I can see the root user in the user list, but when I try to switch I can't access it. How I can do it to back up my wife's files. I have Kubuntu 8 and KDE 4.1.

this blew my mind today, because i've been using ubuntu for 2 and half years. Brasero 2.28.2 in Karmic does not have an option enable multisessions when burning disc or import a disc which has a multisession.
Seriously, wtf is going on? This is supposed to be Ubuntu's default CD authoring software.

I have a new system using an Intel DG451D main board. I have been trying to get a RAID 1 mirror set working as the main drive in this system and for some reason, my SATA drives - three of them all new have had their SMART data changed to show the drives as failing and in need of replacement. Eventually the drive reports failure to the degree that the BIOS no longer recognises it. When loading the Centos os I was getting differing results because of this issue. I am not sure if this is a hardware issue even - I know that the drives were all very much OK and brand new - no good now! Just putting a feeler out to see if anyone has had a similar issue or to see if anyone knows of any possible known causes for this?
Failing any explanation, can anyone suggest a good desktop style Main Board that supports RAID well for Centos 5.4? I plan to sue this as a small server system so graphics etc are not important here.

I just upgraded my AMD64 Phenom X3 on Asus M3A76-CM mobo from OpenSuSE 11.1 to OpenSuSE 11.2. The upgrade didn't go smooth, but it went through after some glitches. I posted this from the system running OpenSuSE 11.2. The problems I have encountered are the system crashed when I tried to Suspend to RAM and/or Disc. The display just showed the Penguin sideway with the bar went down to about 85%. BTW, why shows a Penguin sideway when the system is suspended to RAM/Disc? If one wants to show a Penguin sleeps, it should be standing and not laid sideway.

I'm trying to install The Sims 2 (which I'm aware currently does not run properly in wine anyway), using the multi-CD version. The installation goes normally, up until it comes time to switch from disc 1 to disc 2. The installer prompts me to insert disc 2, but it seems that Ubuntu still believes that the installer doesn't want me to open the drive, because, when I try to open it, it doesn't open, and a window pops up with the following message: Unable to eject CD-RW/DVD RW Drive DBus error org.gtk.Private.RemoteVolumeMonitor.Failed: An operation is already pending

I am unable to burn to DVD-R media using a Plextor PX-716SA SATA drive. I have tried using K3b, Brasero, and Nero Linux. What happens is that the first 5 to 6 MB (possibly just lead-in) of the data is burned before the burner gives up and remains locked. I cannot remove the disc, the burning software remains frozen (no response after hitting software 'cancel recording' button), and the software process stays "uninterruptible" and thus unable to kill. The only way to remove the disc is by rebooting the PC.
The behavior also occurs if I run a test/simulated mode with the aformentioned software, but nevertheless I've been using Taiyo Yuden 8x DVD-R media. Successful burns and simulations have occurred with DVD+RW media, CD-R, and CD-RW; I don't have any DVD+R nor DVD-RW discs to test. Burning on DVD-R has worked excellent in Windows Vista with many software programs. The latest Plextor firmware has been installed on the drive, which is version 1.11. I am currently running openSUSE 11.2 with kernel version 2.6.31.13.
To investigate this further, I've tried burning from the command line using the actual programs the front-ends use to obtain specific error messages, including growisofs, cdrecord (wodim), and cdrskin. No succesful burns. For the following tests, the source data has been an ISO image of openSUSE 11.2. Nonetheless, custom data compilations have also failed, along with other DVD images showing similar error messages.
[Code]...
I have searched plenty of forums with no fixes to this problem. There have been several issues posted involving Linux and Plextor drives but these posts are old with old kernel versions. As far as SATA is concerned, this Linux installation is on a 250GB SATA drive that has not exhibited problems of any kind.

I'm starting to push the limit of my /home directory. My machine is Linux/Windows dual-boot. I need to keep Windows as the machine is not "officially" mine, and so might need to go back at some point to a Windows user. All my normal Windows access is via VirtualBox. I have made my Windows partitions as small as possible, and now have an empty D partition as follows:
It's the D* partition that I would like to add to my home directory. Is there an easy way of doing this, or am I looking at a complete re-install of openSUSE?
