OpenSUSE :: Recommend Some KDE Customization

Sep 21, 2010

I wanted my final install of openSuse 11.3 to be, and I had chosen Gnome. Well, after a few days, I got bored with it again since I've done so much with it on other Distros, so I installed openSuse 11.3 with KDE last night lol. (Reinstalling Linux distros is just so much fun lol).Anyways, I'm currently running my KDE 4.4 Suse desktop and would like to know what some of you guys have for customizations. I'd like to make my computer real nice with cool themes, icons, widgets and whatever else I can change.

So please, just respond to this thread if you have done any customizations, simple or complex, and let us know how you like it and possibly how you did it! I'd love to hear all of your guys' feedback and look forward to all of the responses. I appreciate all of your time!

Ubuntu Security :: Server Consolidation...what Firewall Would U Recommend?

Jan 15, 2011

I am trying to consolidate my servers for a small office (less than 50 computers) and need file sharing/crm or erp database/backup/ftp/firewall/vpn etc). I was going to use endian but that seems to want to run on it's own machine. I was going to run endian in Sun's virtualbox. While researching I have found both guarddog and Lutelwall should work within Ubuntu (no virtual machine needed).

1. Is there a reason to use Endian over Lutelwall or Guarddog?
2. Is there any reason NOT to run a firewall within a VM on the server?
3. Should I just scrap the whole idea and run a router flashed with dd-wrt or tomato

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Recommend Media Transfer App?

Nov 30, 2009

Can anyone recommend an easily usable media transfer application? That is, I want to copy audio files from my CDs, compress them if possible, perhaps organize & store them on disk, and transfer the ones I want to listen to to a media player. (Currently a Zen Vision:M).

The basic problem (there seem to be lots of ramifications) I've had with Creative's software and the Windows media player is that there doesn't seem to be any obvious way to sensibly organize the audio: it's all based on "albums", "artists", and "songs", where I listen to audio performances. So what I'd like to do is to copy say the two disks of Macbeth (which I can do, but it goes into about a dozen Track xxx files in a directory for each disk), somehow organize that into a unit that I can simply copy to the player and play from beginning to end. This seems to me to be a very basic sort of function, but nothing I've found will do it, at least in a way that I can discover.

Ubuntu Security :: What Firewall Rules Would Recommend For Receiving Forwarded DNS Query Responses To Server

Jun 6, 2011

I have my own internal bind9 server, for my local domain, and I forward internal requests for public domains to OpenDNS servers. This server is not in a DMZ, but is instead behind an dynamic NAT. I do not accept queries from the public network, only responses. I understand that DNS is primarilly a UDP protocol, so it can't pass through a stateful/nat. without a firewall allow.

I've done a little reading and learned that bind9 does not run 53 <-> 53 anymore (is now >1024 <-> 53), and modified my config so it works like bind4 did, but I am concerned that this makes me less secure. additionally, I'd really rather not have a completely open 53 rule, but it seems that if I constrain 53 traffic to my known forwarders, it interfers with some of my network services like transmission. so, what firewall rules would you guys recommend for recieving forwarded DNS query responses to my server?

Ubuntu :: Portable Air Conditioner For Equipment Closet

Jul 7, 2011

I haven't heard of anyone doing this and I am wondering why not. I have an equipment closet. Where I have a home server, network gear, directv box, dvd player, stereo system(yet to come). I have only heard of people putting fans in such closets and wondering why not a portable air conditioner? I am thinking I want a

SOLEUS AIR PE6-10R-03 Portable Air Conditioner from new egg for about $315

It claims 45db 256 CFM and 2 pints/hour dehumidifer. That sounds perfect to me for a media closet but am wondering why I don't see others using a portable air conditioner for a media closet? They had a cheaper unit but it doesn't claim to have a fan which I think circulation is a must for a media closet. There is even a drain that is on the other side of the wall that I can run the drain pipe to. All I need to do is run a exhaust duct through the attic and to an exhaust that I can put in my roof overhang.

Slackware :: Old P4 Laptop - Is Slack Still A Good Choice For Old Equipment

Apr 12, 2010

I apologize because I know this is really a worn out question, but I have a reason for asking. My wife gave me this laptop in December 2003 as a Christmas gift. At the time it was state of the art and she spent over ?1100 on it. It is a Samsung V25, P4 2.8Ghz 1GB memory 40GB HD. It still has the original XP home OS on it, and when I got a new laptop a couple of years ago, I let her have it to use because she refuses to use Linux and she did not have a laptop. Well, she stopped using it when she got netbook and it has been jut lying around. After so many years of use, as you might expect Windows now just crawls with so much crap on it and is very unpredictable (might work might not.)

My thought is that she might start using it again (and I certainly would), if I could show her that there is still plenty of life left in it. I KNOW that Slack will be faster, but before I wipe the drive (she is still kind of sentimental about me doing that), and I want to see if I can get a couple of comments about the hardware and what trouble I might expect. I ask because I have tried dozens of live CDS, and some work and some don't. For example, the newest Knoppix would not run (freezes when it tries to start X.) Anyway, the specs are

Display: Intel 82845G/GL/GE/PL
Sound: Crystal WDM AC'97 ICH4

This thing has most of the goodies that loaded laptops offered in those days (i.e. 1394 port). I am most concerned about the display because I have read about others who have had difficulty with Intel graphics. It is my intention to -Current on it, since it runs great on my main laptop. So if someone could just offer a little bit of their experience with similar old equipment

CentOS 5 Server :: What Storage Type To Choose?

Jun 21, 2011

We new have server with VmWare ESXi4.1 and we created virtual machine with CentOS5.6.This CentOS5.6 virtual machine will be used as webserver. We need to backup all files and have access to these files. We are going to keep all websites, databases, backups on data storage (NetApp FAS2000 series).

We have two options to how to use this storage:

1: We can mount storage volume directly to CentOS5.6 by NFS.

2: We can add storage via NFS to VmWare and then add new virtual disks to CentOS5.6 by VmWare vSphere client.

What option would you recommend to use? Which option is better, faster and more secure? My thoughts:If we mount storage volume directly to CentOS5.6 so we can access .snapshot directory there is all snapshots. So it's easy to access all backed up files. NetApp has snapshot system and we can schedule to make snapshots automatically, so we don't need to setup any additional backup utilities in CentOS5.6. But we don't have any NetApp snapshot restoring software license so copy/paste from .snapshot directory is only option.

If we add storage to VmWare firstly (by NFS) and then add new virtual hard disks to CentOS5.6 by VmWare vSphere client so we have to setup rsnapshot(or any similar utility) to make backups in CentOS5.6. But NetApp will also make backups of .vmdk files. So it's like double backups, lol :) If storage crashes so we screwed in both ways, I think.

At the moment, my AD structure is a Microsoft, Cisco ACS servers and Linux Standalone. I wish that both linuxs servers and network equipment were authorized by Cisco ACS on the accounts that are in Microsoft AD.

The configuration of the Cisco ACS to use the AD is done and no problems, the network equipment is OK too, but am having difficulties configuring the server for this solution.

OpenSUSE :: How To Choose System Default Font

Jul 25, 2010

I'm using openSUSE 11.3 Ever since I started using Linux, I have had problems with Korean fonts. Now I think I am close to the solution. I want to know how openSUSE decide which fonts to use as the system default fonts.I know that I can change them in the Appearance -> Font dialog. But my questios is if those settings were just set as Sans (the default), how openSUSE choose what is Sans?I'm asking this because I found that if I copy Arial and consolas fonts into my ~/.fonts folder, then openSUSE uses them as the system defaults fonts. I don't know if this is correct behavior, but to me it seems very strange, and some applications such as Opera uses whichever fonts openSUSE uses as system default to render webpages, so I ended up having Arial for all my webpages open in Opera. So my questions are:1) How openSUSE decide which font to use as system defaults?2) Are font files in ~/.fonts folder supposedly regarded as defaults?3) Where are the setting files I can edit?

Ubuntu Installation :: Multi Distros To Choose Best For Server: What Partitions

Jan 22, 2011

i decided to build a home server on an AMD64 (buyed some years ago) for file storage, printer sharing and something else... I've searched a lot for "the best distros for server" and discarding extreme solution (like command line only) what remains is: Ubuntu, Fedora and Debian

Now the problem: how to install more than one distros on the same hdd? what i know is that i need a bootloader (grub/lilo) and partitions for boot, swap, and remaining space will be split for the distro itself.

I think is a good idea to have a partition only for files (/data) that all distros can access, but for sure i'd like to have one /root and one /home partitions each distro!

I can't understand if the correct way is first of all to install a distro (let's say ubuntu), then set up everything such as partitions and bootloader and then install other distros. I'd like to know if it is possible to manage dinamycally the space reserved for distros, so i'll be able to install 2,3,4,5...distros with no problems.

It installed right out of the box and when I have a connection it is fast enough; not as fast as the other computers, laptops, tablets or phones but reasonably fast.

The connection is however unstable and I often have no connection at all. It very strange actually because as time goes it seems to get more unstable, both since boot-up and since fresh install. I'm tired of this and since we got a new router which support wireless N I can just as well get a new card. Can you recommend any? It needs to be able to handle WPA-encryption.

Feb 20, 2011

This is my first post and there probably will be many more. I've used linux before for short periods but never really tried to learn it. I've decided that I want to study linux and learn as much as I can about it. I dont hate windows or OSX but I really like problem solving and using the command line. Which I used to love with DOS.

I'm going for a complete career change so I want to get certified in Linux by taking the LPI test so I can show employers that I have some computer certification(In Japan it really helps). Now, I'm studying commands and trying to do simple tasks(just playing now) but want to get into it more.

Question: What books do you recommend for a begginner with just dos and windows problem solving experience to start learning linux? Also, what programing language should I pick up a bit for linux?
