OpenSUSE Hardware :: PSU Readings - Maximum Levels So Low - VBat And V5SB Readings So Messed Up?

Jun 17, 2011

I noticed that sensors reports some strange numbers regarding my PSU:

[Code]...

I have not change any sensors configuration for 3 years now (from the day that I makde my PC), and I have not seen those numbers before. So, why are the maximum levels so low? Why is the VBat and V5SB readings so messed up? Can I do something to correct it? If not, is it a problem of the PSU?

General :: How To Interpret Readings Using TOP Command

Aug 2, 2010

I am using Linux as my OS and using TOP command to measure the system performance. From the readings using the TOP, I have observed the following

(1) The used memory increase significantly from 7% to 99% over sometimes? Is there a sign of memory leak? Does OS play a part in used memory? Will system performance be affected? Will system crash due to 99% used memory?

(2) What is the difference between Memory Buffers and Cached?

(3) From the readings, it was observed that Buffers readings decrease, whereas Cached readings increase over time.

(5) Should TOP be used to take readings for system performance (memory & CPU usage)? What is the recommended method to take readings?

Whereas, my applications only consume a bit of memory and CPU.

Hardware :: Kernel 2.6.35 - Get Wrong Readings On Lm_sensors

Sep 16, 2010

With kernel 2.6.35 I get wrong readings on lm_sensors. They are about 20C off than the real values (e.g. if the CPU is at 50C, lm_sensors will show 70C). If I boot with any other kernel (like 2.6.32) I get the correct values. I'm using the 'coretemp' module on an Acer 7720 laptop. My distro is 64-bit Arch Linux.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Different Priviliges In Run Levels 3 And 5 ?

Jan 28, 2011

I noticed that thare are different default priviliges for the user depending if I boot in run level 3 or 5. Normally I use init 5 and login in graphical mode straight to Gnome desktop. Then all my USB devices (memory and external USB sound card) are accessible and work. If I log in throught termina (init 3) then USB has to be mounted and the sound card is not recognized.

Is there any general rule for such behaviour? If I plan to use level 3 shall reconfigure the system go get immidiate acces to usb sound card?

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: PCM Volume Jumps To Maximum?

Sep 2, 2010

openSUSE 11.2, KDE 4.4.4

If I use amarok to change the volume or receive a notification from kopete: the volume of the PCM channel jumps to maximum.

I don't want this feature or bug because the sound quality gets very very bad if PCM is maxed out. Would love to keeps this around 90 %.

This issue is probably a known issue but I was unable to find correct keywords to google for.

OpenSUSE :: Desktop Panel Messed Up / How To Restore?

Jun 22, 2010

On the KDE desktop (openSuse 11.2), I clicked incorrectly an "Eliminate element" option, and the task bar is not present any more; I then selected "Add graphic elements", and the most similar widget to task bar I found is "Activity bar" (translated from Spanish). I selected it and I see a big button on the pannel labeled "Desk"... If I launch several applications, I cannot see them on the panel any more the task bar is not there..How can I restore it?how can elements be moved of position horizontally within the panel?

OpenSUSE Install :: Messed Up Booting Selection?

Mar 16, 2010

Seems I have messed up something.I can boot into openSUSE and into Vista, so it is not screwed.I have 1 hard diskI have an OEM Vista (so a 9 GB EISA rescue partition), the Vista partition (~100GB) and the 3 partitions for openSUSE (2/20/467).Before just wiping the linux partitions I tried to switch back to M$ booting but failed. ATM I boot to splash screen showing 3 entries: 2 openSUSE and 1 windows. When I choose Windows I get to the next screen showing Windows and - ubuntu (I had ubuntu via wubi before but wasn't convinced, so (w)ubuntu does not exist anymore).I thought installing openSUSE will fix the issue that ubuntu shows up on M$ booting screen but ofc I was wrong.I didn't want to wipe the still unused openSUSE partitions before being successfull so instead I tried:

- booting into M$ rescue CL: bootrec /fixmbr does not give an error but bootrec /fixboot or /rebuildbcd - automatic system repair does not show any partition, fixboot /scanos finds C:
- using bcdedit and EasyBCD (fail)

OpenSUSE Install :: Maximum Number Of X Display Failures Reached?

May 4, 2009

I tried ubuntu for a few weeks, but I couldn't get the nvidia drivers to work, I tried everything. So, I got sick of that, and went to download OpenSuse, which seems to be even nicer (..... ) I downloaded the 11.1 liveCD (gnome) from here. I nicley got the welcome screen, and the option screen (liveCD, check errors etc.). I chose LiveCD and it started booting, I got the splash screen with the loading bar, and after it completely loaded, the screen turns black with a lot of messages and at the end:

Code:
GdmLocalDisplayFactory: Maximum number of X display failures reached: Check X server log for errors.
Great, I hoped for better luck after Ubuntu..
My sys. specs:
Asus F3Sc 32bit
Intel CentrinoDuo

OpenSUSE Install :: Messed Up NVidia Driver After Upgrade

Jul 26, 2010

I did an upgrade of Nvidia(Latest version v.196) and KDE-base4 to KDE 4.4.4(I think) in Yast2. Now when I reboot the X doesnt start. I claim it can't find any nvidia-module. I thing the upgrade of Nvidia v.196 failed, so I need to know how to reinstall Nvidia in console(CLI). It only boot up in cli. I thought it is so simple to just download the latest driver and install in CLI, but my NetworkManager doesnt start eighter so I don't have any network.

OpenSUSE 11.2 64bits
KDE 4.4.x
Nvidia NV140 Quadro 512MB

I guess my mistake was to upgrade both KDE and Nvidia in the same operation.

However, the NTFS partition is messed up. The QParted GUI and the SUSE's Disk management GUI shows it as NTFS drive with 319 GB space. However, nothing seem to be able to read/write to it. QParted gives a warning "Unable to read contents of this file system! Because of this some operations maybe unavailable." Is there any way to fix this NTFS partition so I can recover data from it?

OpenSUSE Install :: Clock Messed Up 2 Hours Early Or Forward - Idk

Jun 14, 2010

i probably messed up the clock somehow... I think during install. Linux keeps messing up windows clock... And vice versa... When the clock in windows is correct (say, 2 PM), the clock in Linux when i reboot says 4 PM... And when i set up the clock in Linux to the correct time (in this case 2 PM) and boot into windows, windows clock says 12 PM...

Of course, when i correct it in windows, linux clock gets messed up again... 2 hours early or forward, idk... I'm not sure what i did to make this happen... Maybe has something to do with hardware clock... I don't wanna constantly correct time whenever i change systems...

OpenSUSE :: 11.4 Gnome 2.3 Display - CRTC Error That The Display Is Over The Maximum - 1920x1920

Apr 16, 2011

I have a fresh install of OpenSUSE 11.4 64bit and I have installed the AMD Display drivers for my Radeon HD 5970. Everything seems to be working quite well. I have a multiple monitor setup (1280x1024 monitor and a 1920x1080 monitor).

I have my primary display set to 1920x1080, however when I try to enable the second display, I get a CRTC error that the display is over the maximum (1920x1920). If I enable both monitors at lower resolutions, there is no problem.

I have done a fair bit of reading and have been unable to determine where this maximum is set, or how to change it. I'd like to be able to run both monitors at their native resolutions.

Ubuntu :: Why UFW Disabled In All Run Levels

Nov 15, 2009

I am an experienced redHat/Fedora sysadmin but I'm completely new to ubuntu/debian world and the-way-the-things-works. I am trying to understand a few things. One of them is security related. Is AppArmor an extra security layer that protects individual services based in what is the normal and expected behavior, right? Why it is disabled in all run levels expect level 6 (reboot?)? Should I enable it on all run-levels? Should I select which service to protect or the defaults are fine ?

Is netfilter, the basic packet filter on Ubuntu 9.10? I founded iptables and I installed firestarter, but looks like firestarter is protecting nothing from outside, based on this iptables -L output:
Code:
Chain INPUT (policy DROP)
target port opt source destination
ACCEPT all anywhere anywhere

This is right? The default policy is DROP but there is a rule that allows anything from anywhere? This make any sense ? And finally, what is ufw and why it is disabled in all runlevels? Is ufw a replacement for iptables, or firestarter or it is a completely new animal? Should I use ufw instead firestarter? I am impressed about how different is Ubuntu/debian from other RH based distros. I just realize how much I have to learn about this new stuff.

Ubuntu :: 10.04.1: All 'nice' Levels At 0

Sep 30, 2010

I have freshly installed an Ubuntu 10.04.1 by internet.

All is running well, but my nice values are all set to 0. Is there a script that handles these at boot time? How can I reset them to "appropriate" or "normal" levels (e.g. not all at 0)? I know in other installs, my nice levels vary depending on the process and the user.

Attached is a screen shot of my gnome-system-monitor, and aside from init, which I had set to -15, all others are at 0.

Computer specifications:
Linux AMD-LNX000 2.6.32-25-generic #44-Ubuntu SMP Fri Sep 17 20:05:27 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux
