I use OpenSuse 11.2 and Windows XP. After booting to OpenSuse, I can see NTFS drives are mounted but I am always being asked for a password to access them. Is it possible to access NTFS drives without typing a password? The reason is I created links referring to folders and files stored on the NTFS drives.

So far nobody can help me on the problem that kubuntu keeps asking password (kdesudo - please input your password to mount this device) in order to mount anything with ntfs on it. This is despite i have made needed changes in order for this operation to be possible without rootilleges (recompiled ntfs-3g with internal fuse, set the setuid bit/setguid bit,ded user to disks, gave user permissions to mountpoint). I can do mount /dev/... and it works without sudo but the dolphin, or "removable media" thingie in system settings still will ask a password to mount anything with ntfs on it.
So, therefore a question arises. I can of course do all the mounting manually (automount on boot does not help since my external hard takes time to "boot up" when it's first accessed and that is when system boot takes 10 seconds instead of 1 second and starts complaining about "drive not ready, try manual mounting"So, i would like to have a simple gui something that can mount or dismount (run mount and umount for me effectively) removable or internal disks. Could someone advise some program that he uses? suppose there are plenty such around since the operation is very common...Maybe even a file managertead of dolphin)? I can access and read the NTFS files but can not change them or add to the Win 7 Partion. How do I change ownership and permissions so that I can work on them from Open Suse 11.2

Attempting to install one doesn't seem to lead anywhere othe than the same sequence. I used to be able to read NTFS partitions with 11.2 - what has changed?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI used to dual boot openSuse and XP but I yanked out my linux HDD and now my Windows will not boot, I get a GRUB error 22 (missing partition).This PC does not have a CDrom so I can not simply use the fixmbr from an XP recovery console.I have booted into opensuse Live CD (Flash Drive) and tried to use Yast but it gives me an error it can not write because of the partitioning. I also tried the recover shell but am totally lost trying to re-write GRUB because I can not find the menu.lst file.
View 5 Replies View RelatedRecently i started going into OSes other than Windows. So, i installed openSUSE 11.3 32bit on my system in dual boot with Windows7 32bit. Everything was okay But i couldn't find any drivers for my laptop. My problems are :
1. cannot access NTFS drives.
2. cannot connect to the internet through LAN
3. cannot connect to the internet through Wireless.
Computer's Configuration :
Dell Inspiron 14r
Intel Corei3 processor
Both the operating systems run fine otherwise
I have searched for days on this problem and no one seems to have the fix. Everyone else seems to go off on tangents.I have 3 computers. One runs XP pro, one runs Windows 7 Ultimate x64, and one runs openSUSE 11.2.The two windows machines can share files between each other with no problems.On suse I setup samba correctly. When I go to Computer -> Network on suse, I then go into Samba Shares. Then I see my workgroup name. I click to go in and I can see all 3 of my PC's listed here.When I click on my XP pro machine,am prompted for a user name and password. I put it in and I gain access perfectly.
When I click on my Windows 7 machine, I am prompted for a user name and password. I enter it in and it prompts me again for the user name and password. It will not let me in.I have changed all of the settings in 7, I have disabled the firewall, I have changed the security policies, I have changed the encryption strength.Simply Samba is nolaying well with Windows 7. I cannot believe that I am the only one with this problem
I know it is not advisable to write to a NTFS drive with linux. Though I'm using Knoppix and Fedora 11, is it safe to access my video and music files from linux, while I am working under them or would it be best to use external media to get them.

I cannot seem to find a way to access my second (physical) harddrive as well as DVD writer. I have tried to add it to shared folders in Virtual box, but no go. I can , however, access my USB drives ok, after I found out about the Vbox user permissions. But what I do notice is that it seems Ubuntu unmounts the USB drive as soon as Vbox "mounts" it. Is there no way to have these drives mounted simultaneously on both platforms ?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI currently have 3 drives. 1 is running nothing more than Ubuntu, 2 drives are NTFS drives that I have from Windows days...I need them that way case they are big and at some point I may need to go back to windows (don't want to though).About 3 days ago I was un-raring some files on my big portition (500 G...the files were about 24 rar files with total after extract +/- 600 megs)I also had FireFox open and I was checking email....something happen and my computer become unresponsive...no mouse, no keyboard.So I flip the switch (after about 5 minutes waiting).I can start Ubuntu not a problem but as soon as i try to mount my drive that was mounted at the time of "re-boot" nautilus is crashing, my desktop is gone.I can see the file on that drive in terminal, I can view/modify some of the files...I can see and work with the files using GNOME Commander.I try testdisk, fsck, ntfsfix and I also try XP chkdsk (that one took long to run).
Now does any one know how to fix this? If i can fix this I can move some of the file to other drives and maybe format that drive to ext3.This drive also has my VMPlayer XP files so I do need that (not able to connect to Sonic Wall VPN with x64 linux so need to use XP).
I have an Ubuntu jaunty fileserver. I connect to the machine from time to time using the Nomachine client on windows.Everything is setup and working perfectly, except for one thing. When I acces the server remotely, I cannot access any external USB drives connected to it. The drive mounts fine, and is available when logged on locally to the machine, just not when logged in via Nomachine.

Now, on a dual boot computer from Ubuntu I can browse the encrypted folders but can not open the encrypted files. All attempts produce access denials yet the Unix file permissions appear to be "0777" (owner, group, and world readable-writable).
Is there someway to get Ubuntu's NTFS software to recognize and decrypt the encrypted files? Would a different NTFS package work such as NTFS-3g?
I'm trying to delete directories (long story, Mac temp files there, Windows not cooperating) on a sever connected to a HP 20 Modular Smart Array set up as RAID5. System currently running Windows. I've booted from a 9.10 LiveCD but can't see the external drives. Is it correct that I need to install mdadm to "see" those drives from LiveCD? From a different machine (linux) I can mount the drive using samba like so:
sudo smbmount //IP address/hostname RAID5 Root Share /mnt/ntserver -o username=smith,password=abcde123
I have admin privileges on the Windows OS. In linux (or Windows beforehand), is it possible to take ownership of the directories so that I can do a rm -f -r <dir> ?

It errors out with something like:umount: <path to mount point> is not in fstab (and you are not rootIt works if you are root. I can also eject the drive from the nautilus desktop as an unprivileged user. This command also works if the drive is FAT formatted and I am an unprivileged user.I only started to notice this behavior after I switch to F14. F11, F12, and F13 did not seem to have this issue.Anyone have any clues as to how to fix this?BTW, auto-mounting works just fine, just plug the drive in (no "mount" command necessary). I'm only having issues with the "eject" command as an unprivileged user.

Main drive (sata):
/dev/sdb1 - NTFS - Main Win7 partition, appears blank

But I think that partition isn't mounted till I click on the entry in this menu (when I want to access it from any other place, shortcuts for example, that doesn't work).

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a bunch of NTFS externals set up as samba shares on Linux Mint and they'll work just perfectly, but after a while they will stop functioning and the folders will be empty. It fixes itself if I restart my computer but only for a little while. This happens whether i access them locally or over the network through samba. I don't want to set the as ext3/4 because I need to access on windows from time to time (i'm dual booting) and I don't want to set them as fat32 because they I have files over the filesize limit on there.

I have never installed Linux before, but I'm very impressed with the Ubuntu philosophy and this forum so I thought I'd give it a shot. I have a Windows wifi network at home with three laptops: One is Windows 7 and the other two are running Vista. My wife uses the Windows 7 laptop and I am using one of the Vista boxes, with the other one currently running in a spare room. I'd like to use the Vista box as a NAS (for our photos, backups, etc) but I need to keep Vista on it for a variety of reasons. Just hooking up the USB drives to the Vista laptop and sharing them out isn't really the way I want to go, and besides it wouldn't let me install Linux...
What I'd like to do is install Ubuntu into VMWare Player or VirtualBox and have it share out the USB drives on the network. The drives are NTFS and I'd like to keep them that way, because I'd like the flexibility of being able to plug them directly into one of our laptops if need be, or access them from the Vista host OS. I understand I'll need to install SAMBA to get this shared out, and I found a tutorial for that so I can try that out. I did download and play around with FreeNAS, but it has lots of issues with NTFS corruption whereas Linux has the NTFS driver for a few years now. I haven't tried an Openfiler appliance yet but that may be a plug-and-play option as well. My questions are:..........
