Normally there's something in sshd_config that can be switched to true or yes to allow root login but I can't see it in fedora 12.I can login via root at a terminal no problem, just not via ssh, I get access denied every time. The network interface is set to bridged, so the virtual machine is connected directly to the university network i am connected to. I want to be able to ssh into the vm.I installed sshd via "apt-get install ssh", generated a key pair with puttygen and copied the public part to "/home/user/.ssh/authorized_keys", set rights to 600 and then tried to disable password authentication completely, following the "securing debian" documentation.this is how my /etc/ssh/sshd_config looks now:

Is there a way to disable password authentication completely? The command line is the following:
ssh -o KbdInteractiveAuthentication=no -o PasswordAuthentication=no machine"
it STILL asks for a password. Of course I would like to do this without touching the server, if possible.

So far nobody can help me on the problem that kubuntu keeps asking password (kdesudo - please input your password to mount this device) in order to mount anything with ntfs on it. This is despite i have made needed changes in order for this operation to be possible without rootilleges (recompiled ntfs-3g with internal fuse, set the setuid bit/setguid bit,ded user to disks, gave user permissions to mountpoint). I can do mount /dev/... and it works without sudo but the dolphin, or "removable media" thingie in system settings still will ask a password to mount anything with ntfs on it.
So, therefore a question arises. I can of course do all the mounting manually (automount on boot does not help since my external hard takes time to "boot up" when it's first accessed and that is when system boot takes 10 seconds instead of 1 second and starts complaining about "drive not ready, try manual mounting"So, i would like to have a simple gui something that can mount or dismount (run mount and umount for me effectively) removable or internal disks. have been experiencing an error (the past few weeks) whenever I try to install a software package using the default installer. Each time I enter the root password it is not accepted and I am unable to get past it and the installation fails.This is the error message that is issued:[PK_TMP_DIR|dir:///var/tmp/TmpDir.mf2zCf] Repository already exists.I am able to enter the root password in a terminal session without any problem along with using the Install Software option in the main menu.

Well the password I set before the install doesn't work, it gives me an authentication failure. I thought that since it was inside windows it didn't set me as a root user. I go to user groups and I see my name there and then "root" above it, but its grayed out. Is there a default root password I can enter?
View 5 Replies View RelatedMy system software is installed on an encrypted LVM on hda1 and hda2. My home directory takes up the whole of hdb1 which is also encrypted. I can boot up into the kde desktop okay, but when I open up konsole and type 'su' and my root password I get the message "su: Authentication failure". I am absolutely certain that I am using the right password.
Even more strangely, if I fire up synaptic and give it that same password I am able to install software. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what's gone wrong and how I can fix it?
I can also type Ctrl-Alt-F2 and log in as root to do administrative tasks without any problems so I cannot understand why konsole has locked me out.
I find out there are two ways to do that:
sudo passwd -l root
sudo usermod -p root

It errors out with something like:umount: <path to mount point> is not in fstab (and you are not rootIt works if you are root. I can also eject the drive from the nautilus desktop as an unprivileged user. This command also works if the drive is FAT formatted and I am an unprivileged user.I only started to notice this behavior after I switch to F14. F11, F12, and F13 did not seem to have this issue.Anyone have any clues as to how to fix this?BTW, auto-mounting works just fine, just plug the drive in (no "mount" command necessary). I'm only having issues with the "eject" command as an unprivileged user.

After this when I umount this drive, after 1 minute I got error that this drive cannot be unmounted ( because cache is not stored in drive, umount time limit I think ). Why is this trying id_dsa private key? From Server B to Server A when I do the same, it does not say 'Trying Private Key -id_dsa' This is what it says

How do I enforce that Server A does the same? Why is it trying the dsa private key when I have used RSA.
I just installed Fedora 12 on HP Pavilion (dual boot with Windows vista). I made it all the way through the installation and created my user account. A few seconds later I got the login screen asking for my password. I enter the password and get "Authentication Failure."
The name that shows up on the login screen is my full name, not the user name that I created. Is that wrong?
I cannot login as root or su in graphical mode (haven't tested cmd line as i'm still newbie ). What i have read is that this is by default disabled... can this be enabled?.. if so how please? I am running core13 on toshiba laptop (this issue also on "live" cd)if above is not possible have u a section/training pages for us "newbies"

When it came back up, I'm not able to log in as root or any other user.When I use root and give a random password, it says invalid username or password but when I use the correct password, I get an Authentication failed pop up box (under GUI). For some reason, though, all subsequent attempts to log in as root have had authentication failure, be it through su or through the startup login screen. This does NOT occur for adminstrator tools such as Groups and Users.
