I have an issue that few people are probably going to want to help me with. I'm trying to configure apache on my present system so that I can run perl cgi programs locally. I feel like my perl is developing well, but I've reached a plateau, and wish to go further by learning cgi programming.
The problem is, I can't seem to get any of the example programs to work. After a bit of research, it seems that I need to configure my apache to recognize cgi scripts. I've tried numerous places, but all of the explanations go over my head as I am still a novice linux user. I know how to compile a C program, mkdir, cd, ls, cat ... and then we're stretching my capabilities. I continue to learn every day, and have bought a few books which are helping me get there. I even bought an apache book, but it's not helping me much.
My question: can someone help me set up apache at least to the point where I can run cgi scripts? Assume that I have done nothing further than: sudo apt-get install apache2. I don't even have a cgi-bin dir yet as I don't know where these belong, or how to do a script-alias.

I run a dedicated opensuse 11.1 server with apache (2.2.10-2.9.1) installed. This box has been running for nearly 2 years hosting several low traffic websites. I must admit that I did not give lots of love/attention to the machine over that period. It ran rock solid. The different websites each have their own associated user account and are stored in their own /home/name/public_html/ folder. It was setup through Webmin. Each domain name is also linked to a unique IP (the box has multiple available IPs), however this is configured at my domain provider. All in all a very simple and straightforward setup that never let me down most of the past decade.
Recently the sites on the machine were no longer responding. This happens each other year or so since I write my logfiles to a separate partition. Was df -h and indeed, partition was full. Removed logfiles manually, and while I was at it I decided it was time to run an online update (yast2 / online update that is). Rebooted machine after yast telling me to do so. Sites are no longer working. Can no longer login to webmin. Only thing what works is the 'root' webpage (/srv/www/htdocs folder), which makes me rather clueless as the other sites are just not responding at all, not even a timeout or error message. While I know that deleting logfiles manually is quite stupid, I've done it fore and not really ended up in trouble.
Hence my questions: does this sound familiar to anyone and do you mind to give me a clue about where exactly I should start to look. It's been ages since I actually administrated apache, so I might overlook the obvious. Long story short: any tips are very welcome about what I should check first, what config files might have been changedith the update, etc ...

I'm trying to setup an Apache server on my computer which will allow browsing of files in a specific directory and subdirectories, without needing any sort of authentication.
I've got the Apache2 server up and running through yast, and everything works fine as long as I try to point it to the /www/htdocs folder. However, I want to point it at another folder, which is on another partition. This partition is formatted as NTFS, if that matters at all (here's some background on some permissions issues I had with the NTFS partitions recently).
When I change the "Directory" setting in the Yast http server configuration utility to the directory on the NTFS partition I wish to use, attempting to access the server results in the following error:
Code: Access Forbidden: You don't have permission to access the requested directory. There is either no index document or the directory is read-protected. If you think this is a server error, please contact the webmaster.
Error 403

I use gnome-mplayer 1.0.0 and Totem Movie Player 2.30.2 to view videos Both read subtitles well from srt files. But both are not able to read {a6} command in the srt files.
NOTE:- {a6} command serves the purpose of putting the subtitles on top of the screen, making it possible for subbers to display lyrics/additional footnotes on top, while at the same time, having the dialogues to show in their usual position.
Is there are way to force either of them to read the special commands properly?

I am trying to work my way with LAMP, so I have installed Apache, Php and MySql and also PhpMyAdmin.
The problem I have noticed is that firefox cannot handle .php files. Instead it treats them like unkwon type and ask instructions for handling them (save, open with..). They are not prosessed by the server so no content is displayed. I have tried the followings:
1.Added the line AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .php3 .phtml in my /etc/apache2/apache2.conf file
2.Added the line AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .php3 .phtml in my /etc/apache2/httpd.conf file (it was empty before)
3.Checked if php module is enabled by a2enmod php (it was)
4.Installed epiphany to see if it was a server problem (it handles simple php files fine -so it is a problem of firefox-)
5.Checked the existense of /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/php5.conf and /etc/apache2/mods-enabled/php5.load files (there were present)
6.Cleared my cache of firefox! (as I have read in a thread)
7.Also created new profile in firefox (also read in a thread) but pointless also!

I'm using Hardy Heron. I'd like to keep using it. I mean forever.
I have several old PCs, and in the past few years I've installed 8.04 several times. Every time I install, it downloads about 184 updates... a slow process.
I would like to put all the .deb files on a CD (or flash drive) so that future installs won't need to download these updates.
Question 1: How do I get a newly installed version of Hardy Heron to recognize that there are files on the CD, and so use them rather than downloading the files. I think that maybe just copying the files to /var/cache/apt/archive might work.
Question 2: I once loved version 7 of Ubuntu like I love 8.04 now. But when I try to install it, it won't update anything anymore and it seems unable to find any additional software for version 7. Now I've abandoned version 7, but is there a way to download hundreds of deb files for Hardy Heron, save them to a CD, to ensure that I can continue to use Hardy Heron in say, the year 2012, and have access to all of its non-standard packages, and still be able to install other packages which are located on CD?

I've had a problem for a while-- when I save files on a USB stick in Ubuntu, then put it in a windows computer, it doesn't recognize the files. It only recognizes a video file that I have, but not the .doc files. The folders either don't appear or only appear as shortcuts.

Lucid 10.04 and 'Startup disk creator' is fussy which iso's it will pick up.I have tried on my PC, laptop and Netbook all running Lucid and tried several variations of formatting a Usb flash stick using gparted. I have tried fat 32 and fat 16 and have removed lpa(?) and boot flags. I have transfered the download to my 'home' directory and simplified the name of the iso to lupo.iso (yes an Ubuntu derivative). Yet the software will not recognise this iso but strangely enough will recognise other ubuntu isos in the same directory. The usb stick was previously set up as a bootable linux Puppy system so I know the stick is OK.

I have Ubuntu 10.04 in my laptop and at the same time I have Windows 7 (partitioned disk). I use mostly Ubuntu, but I need windows for some stuff. I want to share files of windows with Ubuntu (is weird but when I installed Ubuntu never gave me the option "share files from windows", I dunno why). Anyway, I can see the disk in Ubuntu, and I can see the folder /Documents and settings/, that creates windows by default with my files. However, the route is too long to arrive there from Ubuntu using the Terminal.
I created a shadow link using lndir to arrive to my files easier. It works fine, however, sometimes when I go to the files using this route, these are lightened in red, and when I try to enter to one of these folders, the system doesn't recognize it. After a while, these are in blue and I can go in them. Why it is happening?. What I did Is the "correct" way to do it?.

The OpenOffice word processor can open and read Microsoft Word files containing XML (.docx) perfectly well, but it--or KDE--does not seem to recognize a .docx by default. To open one with OpenOffice, I have to manually tell OpenOffice to open it, by going through the "open with" option on the right-click menu and specifying soffice. That's obviously not a problem, but it's a minor curiosity. Haven't Word XML files been around long enough that KDE and OpenOffice should recognize them immediately?
I'm not quite sure which to blame this on--KDE or OpenOffice--but KDE seems more logical. And is this a small limitation of KDE 3.5? because I'm still using 3.5. (I'm trying to switch over to Trinity, but have not made the switch yet.)

compiler problem (f77) which arises when I try to execute a bash script ("compile" see [1] below) running under Cygwin on WinXP. The script finds the correct file(s) but the compiler does not recognize them as fortran source files. If the script is executed sequentially from the command line then there is no problem.
The directory structure of flh971da contains two subdirectories flh971da/scripts and flh971da/source. The compile script [1] is shown (in part) below. The script changes directory to flh971da/source, and compiles source from subdirectories flh971da/source/n where n=a,b,c etc and places the object files in flh971da/source/nobj n=a,b,c... etc. The response to flh971da/scripts/compile script is given below [2]. It is clear that the compiler (f77) locates the correct source file [4] (flh971da/source/a/a00aaft.f) but does not recognize it as a fortran source file. All relevant files have been processed with d2u. I suspect the problem is with the script, but I have no idea how to fix it.

i've had my dedicated server for about 16 months now and my log files are huge and I host a few small sites but one of them is quite large and can get a log file (access.log and error.log) of 1-2gb a month so over a year can take up almost 30gb just for that site so I clean them out regularly but I'm wanting a more automated way to do thisi've been thinking of using the find command using something like this but it isn't workingCode:find /var/www -name "*.log" -type f -size +10M -exec echo > {} /;

I have recently mounted my iPod Touch using ifuse, and it works with gtkpod and I'm very pleased about that! However, I'm interested in finding out how openSUSE recognises what devices are mounted? Because the device manager in the task bar doesn't recognise that it's mounted... Dolphin doesn't recognise it and neither does Amarok. Only gtkpod, which is good, but I want other applications to recognise it. Do I need to mount it in a specific location? Currently it's at /mnt/iPhone. Or do I need something in fstab (I'm just guessing here).

I had a small english-greek dictionary working fine with wine until the day I upgraded from 11.2 to latest opensuse version. Since then the enter key no more works (rest keys work fine). So I always have to write the word I am searching for and instead of pressing enter key use my mouse to press the find button.
It is this kind of problem that really I do not know how to try to find a solution for it. There is no error message or warning message. I have not changed anything on my computer (it is the same program running). I tried to launch winecfg but everything looks the same it was before.

I have some scripts that need to use a newer version of PHP, Im running Debian 6 which has PHP 5.3.3 support, I found I could install php 5.4 using [URL]. This worked, it updated my PHP to a newer version, the only issue is that when the install completed apache now downloads the PHP file instead of rendering it.
Im guessing this has something to do with the Apache configs, but I don't know what to do.
Code:
Select alltom@vps:~$ dpkg --list |grep -E '(apache)|(php5-)'
ii apache2 2.2.16-6+squeeze12 Apache

ii apache2-doc 2.2.16-6+squeeze12 Apache

At this moment I got a question asking what files should I configure to setup Apache and the client to access should insert something like http://10.0.0.10/mywebsite:8080. I have already installed APache2, and change the listen ports to 8080 at ports.conf (Listen 8080 | Name VirtualHost *:8080) and at /etc/apache2/default (VirtualHosts *:8080). I also found the index.html at /var/www folder. I also changed IP address at /etc/network/interfaces. With this changing, now I can access using http://10.0.0.10:8080. But the problem is, what about the "mywebsite" part?

I've installed Apache 2 on Ubuntu linux 10.04 as a simple LAN site for testing PHP scripts. But even though I've deleted the default index.html file in htdocs, changed the index file to index.php, put an index.php, chmoded to 775, and gave ownership of the folder to my account, it will not update any of the files. Any time I go to 127.0.1.1 or 127.0.0.1 (Both work, somehow), it has the "It works!" page instead of the page I put there. And yes, I've tried restarting apache, restarting my computer, etc. What's the problem and/or how do I fix it?
tl;dr: Apache keeps displaying the "It works" page even though I've replaced it. How do I fix it?
