Feb 4, 2010I have two linux laptops. Currently, I'm using both of them at work, side-by-side. Now the problem is, I'm connected to a wireless router, but the wireless only works on one of the laptops. So I'm stuck with one laptop that has no access to the internet. Both machines do, however, have working ethernet nic cards. So, I was wondering if I could use the laptop with the wireless connection to share the internet connection with my other linux machine and access the internet on both of them. Or as an alternative, just use the internet on the machine without wireless and be able to switch back and forth, that would increase my productivity like 30 fold.

When I try the 2 arrows on the up-right corner the option for wireless is deemed. I tried offline/online, that did not work either. when I click the firefox It says you are not connected.

Oct 31, 2010I have the "Work Offline" problem: when I boot up, the icon on the toolbar tells me I have "No network connection". This is not quite true, since I can access the first page of any website - only subsequent pages are inaccessible. I get a message saying that Firefox is offline. However, when I uncheck "Work Offline" in the File menu, it makes no difference to this behavior.
The problem is on my Ubuntu Dell desktop, which is connected to the internet with cable broadband via a D-Link router (wired connection). It has worked fine up till now. I use Ubuntu 10.04 and Firefox 3.6.11. I am writing this on my Ubuntu Dell laptop which is wired to the same router, so I assume the problem is not the router. I have tried various strategies suggested in threads on these forums, including editing about:config, changing "allow" to "deny" in some lines of /etc/dbus-1/system.d/NetworkManager.conf and changing from Automatic (DHCP) to Automatic (DHCP) Addresses only, but no luck so far. The contents of ifconfig are:

If I comment out "auto eth0" as well, it makes no difference. If I uncomment both lines ("auto eth0" and "iface eth0 inet dhcp") then I lose the internet connection altogether.

Jun 16, 2009I have just installed FC11 from a DVD I created from an ISO.I also have FC10 (using here) and Windoze XP pro all on separate HDDs.I have not been able to configure my internet connection, when I try to create a new xDSL connection I get an error message; package needed 'rp-pppoe'.I don't now how to get the package without a connection.I have tried with and without Network Manager.

And when some connection is created on another ubuntu PC, I can't connect to it.. I switched NM off and tried the CLI way.

Nov 1, 2010Under DSL tab in network connection we can create DSL connections, but they only allow wired connections(eth0). I need to connect using wireless connection(wlan0). I migrated to Ubuntu recently. With windows I was able to connect with wireless connection. I'm sure there is a way to achieve this in Ubuntu as well.
I'm using Ubuntu 10.10 (using since 9.10)

May 5, 2010What I want to do is to share the internet connected to a computer with a telephone, over another telephone which is permanently connected to the pc.The thing is, that some guys found a way of making this on windows, in fact, I already set it up on xp and works like a charm, it involves configuring in a certain way the telephone, and to use 2 programs. One is CCProxy, which redirects the internet connection to the telephone, and another one, which updates the IP adress of the telephone connection to dyndns, so that I can put that adress on my second telephone as proxy, and this way, surf on the net through my home internet on the telephone anywhere. Tricky right?
Now, the thing is I don't like at all booting windows only for sharing internet with my telephone. So I want to do it in linux. I use Ubuntu and Puppy linux home.I tried setting up the connection to the modem with wvdial, and... I got connected! But hey, when I connect to the telephone, I lost my internet connection (main, cable based, the pc connection) :-S. I mean, somehow, the "active" connection for the browsers and all the internet programs is now the connection I have made with my telephone, which is plugged to the computer.Now my objective here is that NO CHANGE of active connections get done when I start the connection to the phone, and then, get a program like CCProxy, and a dyndns updater for sharing the internet connection on the pc, to the connection made on the telephone-modem wired to the computer.
CentOS 5 Networking :: Create A Single VPN Connection
Jul 28, 2010I have just taken on a dedicated server sitting somewhere in Norfolk. I have created a website that uses PHP to connect to another remote server in order to interrogate a MSSQL database. This script, running on Apache, uses a VPN connection to connect to the remote server.To test, I have Apache on my laptop at home and just used Microsoft Network Connection to create the VPN connection.I have now uploaded this site to my new CentOS server and need to create the same VPN connection. I understand this is a command level and have been advised to use OpenVPN which I have successfully installed.My problem is I only have the details remote ip address, username and password. I believe I have to use the 'client.conf' script instead of server.conf.

Jan 16, 2011I just want to use Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) to connect to the internet. I have done a massive amount of troubleshooting, but some of it seems to contradict itself, and the only two things that I know for sure are that it used to work, and that my Ethernet cable is not the problem. When I use Terminal utilities like ifup and dhclient it seems that it can not determine IP information, but when I try to put it in manually, the "Apply" button grays out right after I finish typing it in. When I try to connect normally, in KDE or GNOME, the icon acts like it's connecting, then instead of having the connected icon, I receive a notification that "the network has been disconnected", and it goes back to the disconnected icon.
Oh, and by the way, I know that I could probably find a workaround, but I have limited resources, and this used to work. The Linux is a Dell desktop with Fedora 12 and the Windows is a Windows 7 HP laptop.EDIT: I hope that I didn't mess something up, but I accidentally used system-network-config to try putting in the IP address there, and ended up changing it back to the original settings, but the computer is now calling it Auto Ethernet in the taskbar icon, although sudo iwconfig in the terminal still calls it eth0.

Mar 6, 2010I have installed fedora 12 recently. after installation i tried to connect to the internet using BSNL broadband connection. I filled in the details such as IP, Netmask, Gateway and even DNS servers. In the services also I ensured that the network manager services is on. However even though my computer cannot connect to the internet. I then tried the ping test of the modem from the address 192.168.1.1 and found that the ping test is successful. Then i tried the network administrator and there I noticed something unusual.
There are two options in the devices eth0 and eth1 thats ok but the unusual; thing is that the Activate (green button), Deactivate (red button) and even the delete buttons are in the background and I cannot select them. Isthis the problem for the network connectivity.

Ubuntu Networking :: Wired Networking - Connection Works But No Internet
Jun 1, 2011I just installed Ubuntu 11.04 desktop on my desktop in dual boot with Windows 7.
Heres my problem, I am unable to connect to the Internet even though my wired Ethernet connection says it is connected normally. The wierd thing about this is that I also have a wireless card in my desktop and when I connect through that I am able to connect to the Internet. I am connecting to a router that is functioning as a repeater to my main router/cable modem. I have tried to solve this myself but am having no luck. Ironically, earlier today suddenly my ethernet connection worked for a few minutes without me modifying anything.

May 26, 2011Just replaced a working install of Ubuntu because i like GS over unity but i cant get my USB760 EVDO card to work. The usual fix of editing the cd.rules file and copying some information into modem.fdi does not seem to work on F15..
Also, noticed that when i attempt to create a broadband connection using network manager it allows me to go through all of the setup dialogs, but never actually adds the broadband connection.

Recently I'm having problems using the internet, I can connect to our wireless network but can't use the internet, firefox just says error on opening the page. But when im in windows xp i can surf and use the net. Is their a way to diagnose whats causing the problem. I use a Realtek RTL8187 wireless lan, it works fine before its just now that its not working with ubuntu.

Jun 17, 2011OS is Ubuntu 10.04. I have HomePNA-connection which is converted to Ethernet by Netsys NH-300 HomePNA-Ethernet adapter.
The problems that I have: Sometimes when I boot I don't get IP from DHCP. If try to ping any address I am told that host is unreachable. Sometimes this I can get IP by using command dhlient -r and dhclient to request new ip. Sometimes only way to get my connection to work is booting the computer.
Sometimes the connection works fine from the start but disconnects later for short time. Sometimes this happens every ten minutes, sometimes less often. If I wait for a while the connection might start working again, if not dhclient -r or reboot helps usually. But not always.

Mar 17, 2010I'm trying to setup network server for a week now and I was able to setup network in which i can ping the other workstation that is connected to my switch which is also connected to my server and I can also ping the server from local workstation.
I have 2 NIC, I use eth0 to dial to my dsl connection(ppp0 has the IP of my internet) and I use eth1 to connect to the switch and use to connect to the other local workstation
Now my problem is I don't know how can I share the internet connection from my eth0 or the ppp0 to my eth1 to the network, what do I need to be able to share the internet connection to the workstation that is connected to my switch.

Now Im running an application on PC-B which listens for the messages that should be processed and PC-A want to send to messages to the application listening on PC-B. For this situation how does PC-A does connect to PC-B i.e. what is the IP Address of the PC-A to get connected. Do I need to give IP of the ISP-B.
Networking :: Resetting Internet Connection
Dec 23, 2010I was away for about a week, and on being back home I got on my notebook MAC but to find my MAC could not get to the internet! The Modem and the router were already switched on. Usually, this gave no problem. However, this time after repeated tries I was very sure something must be wrong. To cut the story short I managed to find a friend who knows another guy who is a qualified computer techy. He actually helped reset the whatever settings and upon getting it all done I asked what was the root of the problem. His explanation was "things like this does happen and we need to reset the system".
Just to make sure I will not need to bother my friend and his friend should thing like this crop up again, I really appreciate to get a guide on what you actually do to reset whatever that needs to be reset.

Apr 25, 2010I know, that this thread is old one, but I am having the same issue. It does not seem to me to be the problem of single torrent. It is more the way how much do I use my connection. If I have only 1-2 torrents, everything is ok. If I have 10, I get this problem. It is also followed by aprox. 30 secs of no internet connection. I use Deluge for downloading and my limits are set like this:
max connections: 200
max upload: 300 KiB/s
max upload slots: 5
max connection attempts per sec: 20
The connection outage is really annoying.
