Ubuntu Servers :: Copying Files Where The Machine Issuing The Copy Is A 32-bit Lucid And The Mount Drive Is A 64-bit
Nov 18, 2010We are experiencing problems copying files from a server to server where the machine issuing the copy is a 32-bit lucid and the mount drive is a 64-bit server. I have no other information but the md5's are consistently different after doing a copy. The files are > 8mb.

Aug 15, 2010My Freenas server is currently off line for the moment pending the arrival of some thermo paste and I need to get some files off one of the drives. The drive is formatted in the UFS file system.I am using a usb to sata converter to hook the drive up to my laptop which is running 10.04.I am then able to browse the files by going to my /mnt folder. The problem is I cannot copy any of the files. I get a permission error. I have tried chmod 777 command to change the permission but I get an error about it being read-only. I tried running nautilus as root to copy the files but I still get a permission error. Using nautilus as root to change the permission or alter any of the read/write options fails because the drive is read only.
From what I understand I can only mount the drive as read only because its UFS and I can't change the permissions because its read only. Sounds a bit like an endless loop lol.Running Freesbie (freebsd live cd) didn't do me any good as it didn't even detect my hard drive and I don't want to learn a new OS just to transfer my files.ny advice would be appreciated. I really don't want to wait until my thermo paste comes and I will be on the road for the next couple of weeks so I won't even be able to get it setup. I need these files now.

Mar 14, 2011I'm mostly a linux-idiot but I tried to get an update for a laptop that was running xubuntu. Anyway, it won't boot and instead takes me to a screen where it says "press s to skip mounting, or press m to recover manually" or something like that. I've pressed S, and then it tells me that it can't find /tmp or something, and I have to turn it off and back on to do anything. Pressing M doesn't help much either... at least not for a mostly-linux-idiot like me. I would do a clean install, but there are a few files I absolutely have to have from the hard drive. recover the files I need from my hard drive to a usb drive while using a Live CD?

May 25, 2010I have been trying to share folders from my main PC which is running Ubuntu 10.04. I have been able to figure out Samba enough to get my a couple of folders shared, but I have been unable to share any folders which are on my external harddrive. After entering the path in my smb.conf file they appear on the network but I am unable to navigate to them. When trying to navigate to them through the network folder on the pc they are actually connected to I get an "Unable to mount location: Failed to mount windows share" dialog box. On the windows pc I am trying to share with I get, "Windows cannot acces \Josh-Desktop

Nov 20, 2010I'v been trying to install Ubuntu (and actually all other dists of linux (in hope of succes), but running ubuntu on my other machines and prefer it) on my old laptop. Laptop Acer Aspire 1312XC. Have just run a 24 hour RAM test it turned out ok. Have tried with other RAM blocks in aswell. The install freezes at random points in the installation. Mainly when trying to copy files to the hard drive. The only thing i've succeded in installing was Ubuntu server and windows XP. I have tried with ACPI off and all the other special atributes. No success so far.

Since I've upgraded to 10.04, my boot process halts and tells me (paraphrasing) /shared is not ready to mount. To continue, pres S to skip or M to manually mount the drive.
Well, I have it mounting now through GVFS and I don't need this in my startup anymore. Frankly, it's just annoying that it won't boot into Ubuntu right away. So, what's the startup file I need to edit to remove the attempt to mount the network drive?

Aug 18, 2010We've had a headless server running Ubuntu for a few weeks now and it's been fantastic - we've been able to access it from all of our computers and it's making life so much easier having one central box to put everything in. Until yesterday, where we noticed that some directories on the 1TB HDD were empty that were previously full of files. Restarted and the directories are gone, leaving only the root directories. Restarted again and Ubuntu doesn't even recognise the disk.
We have Ubuntu installed on a 250GB HDD with the 1TB hard drive mounted on (as?) /srv and all of the data is on there. Before Ubuntu stopped recognising the disk it would appear in Disk Utility saying that the file system was corrupted and that there was an issue with the superblock - I've found some ways of attempting to fix that but none are working now that Ubuntu isn't able to find the disk. I've checked the physical connections and they all appear to be working fine. I can hear/feel the hard disk spinning. Some users haven't backed up the files they put on the server so I'd prefer to try anything non-destructive first and save their work. I'm hoping that the HDD hasn't totally died... but now that Ubuntu can't see it I'm concerned that that might be the case.

Aug 28, 2009so i used to have my harddrive mounted in fstab, to /mnt/diskS. than i decided to change the permissions to 766 global i believe i read somewhere with chmod. anyways so after that i checked to see if it worked and to my dis believe all my files are gone. or just arnt showing, the space taken up hasnt decreased but i just cant see any of my files. so i decided to take the harddrive out of fstab and restart my computer. and after restart when i click on the folder the harddrive is mounted in it says permissions belong to 1000?

I have a line in my /etc/fstab such that, when the mythbuntu machine boots it is supposed to mount the network drive. This configuration worked fine for mythbuntu 9.10. I recently updated the machine up to 10.10 and since then the network drive won't mount at boot. If I open a terminal and issue: sudo mount -a, it will mount the network drive just fine.

Feb 19, 2010I recently installed Fedora 12 + KDE on my laptop. I also have a media PC which I have connected to my TV. It has an external HD connected to which I am trying to mount on my laptop. It is connected to two other PCs all running Windows 7, part of a workgroup that only requires a password with no user log in. These PCs are working OK but I cant mount the shared drive on my Fedora laptop. I have tried the "Add Network Place" wizard which didnt work. Tried using the host IP rather than the host name. This got me to a user authentication screen which prompted me for a username and password.
As I mentioned before, the only user authentication required to connect to it should be that the device should be within the same workgroup and use the password. Tried using the workgroup name as the username which didnt work, neither did using the PCs usual log in. Eventually I gave up on the wizard and attempted to mount it from the command line using the following command.
