Networking :: PC Many Hard Drives - Use It As A Storage Cluster?
Nov 30, 2010
Have many computers at works. Not always on as students works on it from time to time. I already have a nfs server for files, but there's plenty of disk space on workstations. I wanna make use of it as a "performance booster".Which distributed file system should i use ? Looked for Plan 9 fs, but seems a bit new and "complicated" for me.

I am trying to do the cluster storage with the Rock Cluster storage operating system . I have install the rock cluster on the main server . and I want to connect the client with the PXE boot . when I starting the client then it boot from the PXE boot into the mode of compute node. but it ask the where is to be stored the I have give the path..then server says that not able to find the directory path.
Steps:-
1) insert-ethers
2) client is started with the PXE boot.
3) it detects the dhcp .
4) At last it demand where is to be started by cd-rom, harddisk ,nfs etc.
then I started with the nfs and I have given the lanIp of server.and server is detecting the client but client is not finding the filesystem directory. into export partition directory but it is not taking path.
PATH:-
/export/rock/install it is not finding this path then it is not able to start the o/s from PXE boot..Is there any solution and manual of rock or anyother solution then u can reply to me...

I trying to create a Cluster Linux with two servers and one storage, I have mounted some filesystems in both servers, but, when I create a file on server (1), I don't see the file on server (2).
Is that a problem with the linux or storage configuration ?.

Can ANYONE point me in the right direction on how to use storage on multiple servers as a single cluster?I thought storage cluster was for that but, after much googling, and even more help from here, I don't think that achieves my goal. My goal is to have multiple servers share a file system, to act as somewhat of a network raid, so if node-A goes down the files are available on other nodes, and hopefully so when the capacity of the nodes are reached I can add nodes to expand the "cluster".

I need a cluster-safe filesystem for a SAN shared storage in Slackware. Red Hat's GFS is the best/only solution?Given GFS support in a custom kernel, what about tools (mkfs,mount...)?

I am working on the beginning of implementing a two-node cluster with shared storage (GFS) and IP address. Both machines are virtual on VMware ESX 3.5, that should not make a difference, but that is the background.current status is that I have a single node cluster built with only the IP address configured within the cluster. The issue that I am having is that I have configured a service to contain only the IP address resource, however, when I go into cluster management that "service" does not register. As such, I cannot bring it online, ping it, etc. below is my cluster.conf configuration:
<?xml version="1.0"?>
<cluster alias="tmbackup" config_version="10" name="tmbackup">
<quorumd device="/dev/sdb1" interval="1" min_score="3" tko="10" votes="3">

For what it is worth 2 hard drives have Kubuntu 8.04 and the 3rd has Mandriva Spring 2008. Tuesday was the last time I had used Pidgin and everything was fine. Wednesday when I booted the computer I noticed that the Pidgin icon in the sys tray looks broken. I click on it and it shows "Pidgin is available" "connecting" and that's it. The buddy list is empty. Went to my other Kubuntu hard drive, same thing, went to my Mandriva hard drive same thing. Installed Kopete on this hard drive and it shows no one available.
I did a search here before posting and found nothing.

I am building a home server that will host a multitude of files; from mp3s to ebooks to FEA software and files. I don't know if RAID is the right thing for me. This server will have all the files that I have accumulated over the years and if the drive fails than I will be S.O.L. I have seen discussions where someone has RAID 1 setup but they don't have their drives internally (to the case), they bought 2 separate external hard drives with eSata to minimize an electrical failure to the drives. (I guess this is a good idea)I have also read about having one drive then using a second to rsync data every week. I planned on purchasing 2 enterprise hard drives of 500 MB to 1 GB but I don't have any experience with how I should handle my data

I am running Karmic on a stripped laptop, and running it off a usb thumbdrive.Its purpose is mainly as a slide show/video show inset in a tableI did not really want to go out and buy a HDD, since it does not need to store that much. Then I went to aldi and they had 8gb flash drives for $5, so I got 6. The ultimate question comes down to the best way to make use of them. I ordered a 7 slot USB hum off ebay for cheap, and I was going to go from there. would it be easier/better to just plug them in and make links to them from the normal folders and just operate directly from there, or is there a better option. I guess a usb raid array could be neat

I have a computer, the one I am on now, with Ubuntu 10.10, it should be completely updated... and I can network with other computers, I can access Windows XP and 7 shared locations on other computers, and I can also get Ubuntu on other computers to access this computer's shared files.What I can't do, however, is share my hardrives that are on this computer, I have tried sharing them in /media/ and etc, but it is not working, apparently you have to mount them in some mystical way.
Another problem is getting Windows machines to access Ubuntu computers on the network - which I believe is a Windows problem, so I can figure that out some other time, but importantly, I want to be able to share my hardrives over the network.
If someone can give me some instructions to mounting and sharing hardrives(internal), and even my DVD-Drives, and portable USB devices, would also be fantastic - since, in Windows you can just right click, "share", and it's done.. It is a very useful thing to have, and I don't want to use Windows on this computer anymore, but I have no choice, really, if I can't share my storage to the other computers.

I'm trying to delete directories (long story, Mac temp files there, Windows not cooperating) on a sever connected to a HP 20 Modular Smart Array set up as RAID5. System currently running Windows. I've booted from a 9.10 LiveCD but can't see the external drives. Is it correct that I need to install mdadm to "see" those drives from LiveCD? From a different machine (linux) I can mount the drive using samba like so:
sudo smbmount //IP address/hostname RAID5 Root Share /mnt/ntserver -o username=smith,password=abcde123
I have admin privileges on the Windows OS. In linux (or Windows beforehand), is it possible to take ownership of the directories so that I can do a rm -f -r <dir> ?

I have Fedora 14 installed on my main internal drive. I have one Fedora 14 and one Fedora 15 installed on two separate USB drives.When I boot into any of these drives, I can't access any of the other hard drives from the other drivesll I can, but just the boot partitions.Is there any way of mounting the other partitions so I can access the information?---------- Post added at 12:42 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:34 AM ----------I guess even an explanation on why I can't view them would be good too.

So recently I've been trying out openSUSE, along with a few other distros, for use on my HTPC. Previously, I'd been using a hackintosh build, so my external media storage HDDs are all formated HFS+. It was actually surprisingly easy to get openSUSE to mount them for both reading and writing.
Only thing is, XBMC has been pretty unstable on all of the linux distros I've tried, and I'm wondering to what degree the HFS filesystem might be affecting things? It would take a fair bit of juggling -- or going out and buying a new multi-TB HDD -- to clear out the disks in turn so as to reformat them with an ext filesystem, but if that would help me get a more stable HTPC with opensuse -- the linux distro I've settled on -- it'd be worth it. I'll paste a link to the log from an xbmc crash, in case that would be helpful, but really, I'm just curious, since I don't really know all that much about how different filesystems work or anything, how much extra strain does the filesystem translating entail?

I have a SATA drive that worked fine. Then I installed two more hard drives into my system. When these hard drives are installed, if I try to access the SATA drive in Linux, it will start lightly clicking and then the drive will become unavailable. If I power on the machine without the other two hard drives then it works fine. What could be causing this to happen? I don't think it's heat because the two hard drives are far away from the SATA drive.

Hybrid Storage harddisks use a large non-volatile cache to save power and improve speed. I wanted to ask if there's a reasonably simple way to simulate that under Linux. Ideally there would be a FUSE-filesystem that does this, For now this is purely theoretical, but my setup would be a small home server (Sheeva Plug) with an external USB harddisk that goes to sleep after a few minutes of inactivity. To keep it powered down as long as possible, I would like to use a 16GB SD card as a cache for the harddisk, thus simulating Hybrid Storage.
The only possible solutions I found thus far were Hierarchical storage management packages for enterprise use, which are way too expensive for this task.

I have this unique situation, I think. My TV plays certain files only through external USB storage. My Ubuntu server stores all of these files on local hard disks. I do not want to buy an external hard disk and then keep moving it between both. Now, strange as it may sound, is it possible to somehow connect my server to the PC and expose a given local hard disk connected to the server, as an external USB drive to the TV?

I am trying to build GFS2 cluster with 2 or 3 Fedora 14 nodes, but I've encountered some problems from the start. First luci does not work at all in Fedora 14. There is no luci_admin and even if I manage to start luci service, I get a blank white screen when I try to open it from the browser. I've googled a bit and found that I'd might be able to setup GFS if I manage to build cluster.conf manually and start the cluster suite, but I cannot find documentation on how to create cluster.conf anywhere. If anyone knows how to setup GFS2 without a cluster suite or how to configure cluster.conf.

I'm having a very strange problem with red hat cluster. After testing it in the lab, I tried to install a new cluster and received the following error: cman not started: Cannot start, cluster name is too long or other CCS error /usr/sbin/cman_tool: aisexec daemon didn't start I've checked the internet for that error, but nothing. I decided to to take the example from cluster.conf man, which looks like that :
[Code]...
And still I get the same error. I can find my servers both from DNS (FQDN and short name) and they also appear in /etc/hosts.

I am working in a project that needs to set up an Apache Web Cluster. The cluster needs to be High-availability (HA) cluster and Load-balancing cluster. Someone mentioned the use of Red Hat Cluster Suite, but, honestly, I can't figure out how it works, I haven't been able to configure it correctly. The project currently have two nodes, but we need to support at least three nodes in the cluster.

I copied my backup disk (3.2 GB) onto my hard drive using 10.4 in order to reorganize my storage, but then I could not trash it.In "file browser" a lock icon appears next to the folder name, and I always get the error message that it can not be put into trash in one step, would I like to delete it? I click on "delete" and no help.Further trial led to an error message that I don't have "permission." I'm the only user.I don't know anything about terminal and not one command, and usually when I ask for help, people provide "code" but no instructions on how to enter it or where.I'm the rawest beginner at terminal,

I have a Centos 5.5 system with 2* 250 gig sata physical drives, sda and sdb. Each drive has a linux raid boot partition and a Linux raid LVM partition. Both pairs of partitions are set up with raid 1 mirroring. I want to add more data capacity - and I propose to add a second pair of physical drives - this time 1.5 terabyte drives presumably sdc and sdd. I assume I can just plug in the new hardware - reboot the system and set up the new partitions, raid arrays and LVMs on the live system. My first question:
1) Is there any danger - that adding these drives to arbitrary sata ports on the motherboard will cause the re-enumeration of the "sdx" series in such a way that the system will get confused about where to find the existing raid components and/or the boot or root file-systems? If anyone can point me to a tutorial on how the enumeration of the "sdx" sequence works and how the system finds the raid arrays and root file-system at boot time
2) I intend to use the majority of the new raid array as an LVM "Data Volume" to isolate "data" from "system" files for backup and maintenance purposes. Is there any merit in creating "alternate" boot partitions and "alternate" root file-systems on the new drives so that the system can be backed up there periodically? The intent here is to boot from the newer partition in the event of a corruption or other failure of the current boot or root file-system. If this is a good idea - how would the system know where to find the root file-system if the original one gets corrupted. i.e. At boot time - how does the system know what root file-system to use and where to find it?
3) If I create new LVM /raid partitions on the new drives - should the new LVM be part of the same "volgroup" - or would it be better to make it a separate "volgroup"? What are the issues to consider in making that decision?

I recently purchased 3 new WD cavier green 500gb drives with the intent of building a raid5 array and running linux. Admittedly I purchased without doing enough research and now I have serious doubts about running an os on raid5 with the onboard controller.So now I am thinking I should run one drive as an OS drive and mirror the other two. I don't have a fourth drive unless someone can convince my wife I need a fourth after already buying 3....
Is it possible to have multiple distributions where ALL distros save their docs to the raid dives? That way I can wipe/install the os and keep my files? I seem to recall that I can be done, just need someone to point the compass.
