I am trying to delete a network I created on my computer (Create a new wireless network). I did so, but it is still there, visible by anyone out there in my neighborhood. I have ubuntu linux 8.04 LTS desktop edition.
View 1 RepliesI go up to the panel and click on the wifi manager, create a new network and name it "loganspc" with no authentication since previously created networks didnt work with those settings. Now before, I used this in conjunction with my eth0 connection so i could give my ipod internet. then i got a wireless router to do that. its exhibiting the exact same problem. Both the router and my laptop's network are invisible. I create it and then i cant connect to it with my ipod. I do a wifi scan (with an app, its jailbroken) and it doesnt find it still. nor does it find the routers network.

I created a directory somewhere with permissions rwxrwxr-x so that other users in my group can create files and directories in it.
I do need to be able to delete the contents in this "public" directory, but it seems that while I am able to remove any files in this directory I cannot remove and subdirectories under it.
Is there a way to remove such subdirectories owned by others under a directory owned by me?
I ran Scalpel to retrieve some files from an old HDD, what I didn't realise is how much larger the output from Scalpel is than the original disk space.
So what happened is at about 5% of files carved (pass 2/2) my disk space was full and the program aborted.
Then when I rebooted Ubuntu I can't get in unless using Recovery Mode.
I think this is because there is no disk space left. The error I get is to do with Gnome Power Manager not being configured, I never had this error before.
So I went into CLI prompt and performed 'find -maxdepth 2 | grep *.mpg' and I can see a tonne of mpg directores called ./~/mpg-1-6, ./~/mpg-1-7, etc, and they all have lots of files.
Now I have no way of deleting these, I tried using 'sudo rmdir */*mpg' and it cannot find the directory.
When I go to my home folder and 'sudo ls -al' these aren't listed.
The only way I can see them is using the 'find' command.
Can I chain the find command with a delete command somehow?
I want to delete the KVM created hard disk image file, so I would like to know where it is located .

View 5 Replies View RelatedI've tried Ubuntu, Arch, and most recently Fedora but the SUSE GNOME environment blows everything else away!
The only problem (so far) is that Network Manager requires you to enter your password every time you login to unlock the password keyring. I want to disable this.
I think some distros disable the prompt by using the login password to unlock the keyring, but I use auto-login (if that makes a difference).
I'm wanting to permanently delete one particular wireless network. I don't want to merely disable auto-connect, I want it to not even show up in my list of available networks. Is there a way to do this? I'd like to still be able to connect other wireless networks. I'm using Ubuntu 11.04.
View 4 Replies View RelatedThere is a test/development environment here at work with some windows and some CentOS systems connecting over a network share to a CentOS fileserver in the data center. The developers run as root (i know i know, but the environment is completely cut off from the rest of the company and this just worked best) and connect to the fileserver using samba. I tried using nfs but to no avail. Now, a couple of the developers have no issues with permissions at all but a couple of them are not able to delete files or folders in their network share graphically. They can through terminal though.

Where there are two exclamation points, I would expect the encrypted password (as is the case for the root user, which is also created in the kickstart file).
The relevant line in my kickstart file looks like this:

After the install is complete, I reboot and attempt to log in as "joeblow", but no dice. If I log in as root, and manually put the above encrypted password into /etc/shadow for jowblow, I can then log in as joeblow.
we know that /etc/passwd - is a replica of /etc/passwd file and acts as a backup in any damage done to /etc/passwd file..i have observed a strange thing in RHEL 5.4....for example... if /etc/passwd has 100 accounts.. then /etc/passwd - is having only 99 accounts....when i add 101 useraccount with "useradd" then /etc/passwd has 101 accounts and /etc/passwd is having the 100th account of /etc/passwd - ..when i delete /etc/passwd and recover it with /etc/passwd - from runlevel 1 the lastly created user is not having his account after recovery.. what is the solution? this is same case even with /etc/shadow and /etc/shadow -
View 2 Replies View RelatedI just installed Fedora 13 on a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo 3553, after doing some testing in Mandriva 2010.1 Spring XFCE. I am not (I repeat "not") an experienced Linux-user, so maybe I need to get things with a spoon here, but the wireless networking in Mandriva is similar to the one in Fedora, and in Mandriva it worked fine, in Fedora I cant get connected. It just ask me for the password over and over again. Now I am on cabel, and that works fine.
View 12 Replies View RelatedBooted up my laptop with wireless disabled (using the little switch on the laptop). I flipped the switch, network manager showed all the wireless networks, but didn't connect to any. So I picked mine, and it asked for the WPA key. Now normally (if I had booted with wireless enabled) it would connect without asking for the WPA key. So I rebooted again with wireless enabled this time, and same deal. It seems that it's just forgotten the key altogether.
I put in the key and it's all back to normal, but I'd like to know where/how network manager is storing the WPA key, and why it forgot it.
I'm using 9.10 most recent updates. I want to connect to a wireless network and get a dialog box offering "WPA & WPA2 personal" as the only choice. The passphrase I was given is 6 letters but the "Connect" button does not light up until I get to 8 when entering wpa/wpa2.
Do I need to convert the passphrase somehow?

I recently bought hp mini netbook.
I used my friend's (who lives upstairs) internet on my desktop with the router
so I have the 26 digits WEB KEY.
I entered the the web key but the computer is keep saying "The network password needs to be 40bits or 104bits depending on your network configuration.
This can be entered as 5-13 ascii characters or 10 or 26 hexadecimal characters."
This is confusing because I Thought 26 hex is 168 bits or something like that.
So is there way to change 26 hex to 10?

I routinely use somewhat spotty wireless hotspots, and Network Manager is driving me insane. Whenever there's a momentary drop, NM will prompt me for my password. I enter it, and it connects perfectly. And then 5 minutes later, it'll prompt me again. How do you instruct NM to remember a password, and stop prompting?

On my win7 box, when I try to connect to an Ubuntu share on my ubuntu box, it asks for username and password. I have tried my ubuntu username and password, the windows networking password, and my win7 user account name and password, and I cant get in.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI installed Ubuntu on an old desktop last night and am having some problems with my wireless connection.I've searched around a bit and tried a few solutions but nothing seems to be working so hopefully someone can help. I'm using a Netgear WG111v3 wireless USB adapter and am attempting to connect to a Sky Broadband modem, the connection shows up in the list of avaliable networks after clicking on the network symbol and after attempting to connect for a while it then asks for the WPA password.
I enter the password and then this repeats over and over again continuously asking for the password and me continuously entering it. I know the password is correct as I'm using it on my laptop and other home computer right now.I've tried connecting to a hidden wireless network and inserting the network name and password as some have suggested and I've also tried adding the details from my router into the connection; so that I have manually entered the information rather than automatically finding it, this also hasn't worked.I should probably add that earlier today I seemingly randomly got connected and then managed to run some updates but since then it has disconnected and the same problem is repeating over and over. Sorry if thats quite a long explanation but I thought I'd try and make it as clear as possible,
Is there a way i can setup my computer so i can connect to my wireless network without the use of an admin password? i personally feel that it wouldn't be a security risk of any sort to not require a password to connect to an ecrypted wireless connection.

I get a message asking me to enter a password for keyring. The message is as follows; Unlock Keyring "The application 'Network Manager Applet' (/usr/bin/nm-applet) wants access tot he default keyring, but it is locked.' Password: _______________
Then I can Deny or OK it. How can I disable that and keep it from popping up. Also, it there a way to figure out/change the administrator password if you don't remember it as well?
Running ubuntu 10.10 here, brand new install/machine.USB wireless based on a realtek chipset. I spent a few days trying ndiswrapper, and now have the native driver up and running. I can see the network(s) but can't connect. If I encrypt the network, i get a bad password error from wicd network manager (All encypt. methods- Weps, WPA etc) If I open my wireless up with no encryption, i receive a "can't obtain IP" error.

I am trying to do a net install. I set up a mirror of lenny using apt-mirror inside a virtual machine on my network using the following guide: [url]
And I changed everything in the guide specifically for Lenny.
I gave the VM bridged networking, and assigned it its own static IP address.
When I attempt do an http install, and point the installer to the address, I get the following error message: choose-mirror[3885]: WARNING **: mirror does not support the specified release (lenny).
Today I was creating an Ad Hoc network for sharing internet connection and I realized it is not working. I have done it before on Ubuntu 10.10, now on 11.04 it just doesn't work. I create a new connection (Create New Wireless Network) and it is never visible to the other computers (I checked the IPv4 settings, it was Shared to Other Computers). I really do not know what is going on, my wireless card is working perfectly fine (I can connect to other network and on additional driver it is there with a green circle).

1. My laptop automatically get logged in without asking user name and password.
2. I tried to change password for newly created user and root user using graphical way but it does not work.
2. I can perform administrator task using only OEM user which is default inbuilt user of mint.
How can make my laptop to ask password when mint get booted? How to change password for other users?
I've just got a TP-Link wn-851n PCI WLAN card, and the problem is that ubuntu can search for the network, but I can't join into the network after typing the password. I'm sure that it is correct as m Windows notebook is also using that network.
Taking a look in dmesg, and it start to loop this message after I joined the network.

1) Creating a local repo
2) Using kickstart to access that repo
3) Performing a network install using kickstart
Some background: I have several racks of servers that I need to install Fedora on. These servers CANNOT be placed on the internet; hence the need for the creation of a local repo on some other machine (which will be connected to the servers via a local network). I am not sure how to create a local repo, so that one of my questions.
I'd also like to automate as much of the install as possible and kickstart is the only thing I know of for that. I am no guru with kickstart, but I have used it before to successfully install Fedora Core 6 -- I am hoping there are no great changes with the current releases of Fedora (12-14)?
A local repo of Fedora Core 6 was created by someone (some time ago) on a workstation (running FC6). This is what I've used in the past to install FC6 on previous servers (via a kickstart CD). However, I dont have the documentation on how the repo was created or how the kickstart CD was created I've gleaned some ideas ok kickstart from the pieces I've read on web, but none of it has been specific to the latest releases of Fedora.
I have setup a nis server and client. At first I didn't have a local user defined on the client. The client then used the user and passwords from NIS, so that was ok.
The problem then is, that when the server is down, I couldn't login to my client anymore. So I created a local user with the same name on the client but with a different password (after I shut the nis server down, if nis server was on, I couldn't create a local user with the same name). I then edited etc/nssswitch.conf as follows:

If NIS server is on: client has to login with the nis password If NIS server is down: client has to login with the local password (as fallback)
