Networking :: Making A Serial Snooper With A Box?

I have some industrial equipment I'm trying to reverse-engineer. It communicates from the main CPU to a controller via a serial connection. I want to hook into the serial connection and dump everything doing down that line to log file so that I can stare at the messages and try to figure out the protocol.
I could just plug the serial cable into my computer but I need the messages to continue going to the controller or else the rest of the system will error. So basically I need to tap into it.
My first thought is to use a laptop with two USB-Serial adapters. I could use a perl script to open both serial connections as files and send everything that comes in the one serial connection right back out the other serial connection, but also dump it to a log file. Will this even work? I can see that it will introduce some latency but I don't think that will be critical.

I am trying to get two way serial communications going between a Windows XP system and a Linux system (RHEL 5).I have /sbin/agetty -L 9600 ttyS0
in /etc/inittab. I am using a generic USB to serial adaptor on Windows (Unitek) and a null modem cable. I have putty configured for 9600 baud, 8 bits, no parity, one stop bit, no flow control.I get the login prompt from agetty in the putty window but input does not work; I see weird characters in the putty screen. I can echo output into the device from windows and see it, but
cat < /dev/ttyS0. just prints out weird characters from what I type.

On my CentOS 5.2 install I've installed a dual-port serial card based on the NetMOS 9835 chipset. I've followed the serial instructions, but everything they tell me to do is already done - see setserial outputs below. I've compared these values to the lspci output (below, NetMos card is at the bottom of the output) for the card and it appears right. Problem being, I can't use the serial ports. Oh and I did use search, and looked at every 9835-related article before posting this :)

I am hoping to be able to get an old serial-touchscreen to work with a usb/serial adapter. I had this touchscreen working some years ago on different hardware. I would like to hook it to the machine I am setting up as a multimedia host with mythtv among other things.
Following the instructions I left behind when I got this to work way back when does not work. See [URL] ....

I do know that the touchscreen works as I am able to get garbage on the screen as in the first part of my howto. But I have not had any success getting xorg to see it. I wish I had posted a copy of the xorg.conf at the time, but......
There is an issue with the current xserver in testing that I am hoping the next update (in unstable) will fix when it gets pushed to testing. That is that Code: Select all# X -configure fails with a segfault. So I am not able to generate the xorg.conf needed to get it to work. I was going to post a bugreport, that is when I found out there is an update in unstable, so I am waiting for it to get pushed at the moment.
Anyway I am hoping that I can link /dev/ttyUSB0 to /dev/tty0 and get it to work. I would like some kind of guess as to my chances of success before I go to all the work of getting the monitor hooked to the host.

I have a bit of a dilemma. I'm attempting to use a microcontroller to send MIDI messages over a virtual serial port. I want to (eventually) read them with Mixxx. I'm using an FTDI chip, so I get a /dev/ttyUSB0. I've tried spikenzielabs' Serial-Midi program, but it doesn't see any serial ports. NOTEMIDI looks really old and won't compile on my 10.04 LTS machine.

We have a new machine with RedHat enterprise 5 on it. I need to connect a serial cable to the serial port and talk to another system (old alpha system) instead of using a VT connected to the alpha.Does RedHat come with anything like Keaterm/hyperterm/etc etc?

I did a forum search and too much came up that was not the answer I was looking for. I have only Linux devices at work and I was wondering how do Linux Administrators connect to Cisco devices via serial console cable. Cisco recommends 'Hyper Terminal' which was a Windows add-on applications licensed to XP. I think Vista and 7 no longer have the license to use Hyper Terminal. Regardless I don't have any versions of Windows and would like to use a serial cable from Com port 1 to the console port on the device. I can't use SSH since some devices don't support SSH and or I have to do a password recovery.

I have a Sun server that could be only configured via serial interface. It has one serial port with a RJ 45 connector. Although my laptop has not serial interface. Is there a way to use C-Kermit or any software to establish a serial connection via the ethernet port. It should be some kind of virtual serial port that should transmit the information over the ethernet port, without encapsulating it in ethernet frames.

I'm trying to do something very old, but for me very necessary. I am trying to get dial in acces via a modem that is connected via a usb <-> serial converter. I am running F14. The serial port is OK. I can run minicom and access the modem and even interogate it. What I am unable to do is to get the computer to answer. Much has changed and I have not dealt with upstart and things like that (if indeed that is needed).
I believe I"m OK with 115200 communicating with the modem. I know the device is /dev/ttyUSB0.
Is ther someone who can fill in the blanks? Or, point me towards really good documentation that explains how to do this.

I've been reading too much and understanding too little. What I have: Lucid laptop & desktop. Both have ethernet > hub > internet. What I want: connect them directly by the serial ports so the laptop can access the desktop's drives, and the desktop can be retired from the internet. I've got an old DB-25 null-modem, last used for multiplayer Doom. The laptop's dock has DB-9, so the connections is desktop > null-modem > Belkin DB-25 - DB-9 cable > laptop.
I had hoped this post would get me somewhere:[URL].. No such luck. When I ping 'grin.local', the connection is through the internet. If I disconnect the hub, i cannot ping.
Dunno if there's something more I should do to enable serial connection in Lucid, or if my null-modem is no longer good. I'm also rather curious how "grin.local" manages a connection through my ISP's system. These are DHCP. Shouldn't that have required the full numerical IP?
(It's nothing to do with the hub. Checked that by connecting a third box to the hub. My ISP only hands out two IP. I couldn't ping the third box.)

Hello. I want to use my Debian box as an internet connection for a Win95 laptop. The laptop is old enough that the only port I have available to connect to the internet from is the serial port. I have heard that a serial port redirector will allow it to access the internet through my debian box, but I have no clue how to set one up. Any advice. Thanks

I am trying to send text data from one PC to other using Serial cable. One of the PC is running linux and I am sending data from it using write(2) system call. The log size is approx 65K bytes but the write(2) system call returns some 4K bytes (i.e. this much amount of data is getting transferred). I tried breaking the data in chunks of 4K but write(2) returns -1.My question is that "Is there any buffer limit for writing data on serial port? or can I send data of any size?. Also do I need to continously read data from other PC as I write 4K chunk of data"Do I need to do any special configuration in termios structure for sending (huge) data?

I'm using CentOS 5.5. I connected serial terminal using "cu". The command I had given was "cu -l /dev/ttyUSB0 -s 115200". It connects I'm seeing the target boards boot-up messages and log in screen. But I couldn't type anything on "cu" terminal window.

I am new to linux terminal programming and all but i want to set up a simple serial communication from my desktop through USB port. The actual idea to to write some data in the terminal and build a terminal program that sends the data to the usb port with a fixed baud rate. are there ready made terminal programs available for this simple communication?or atleast any Graphical tools which could help me build and design such a terminal in ubuntu 9.04?

After seeing a few articles on making a home router I thought "I'll have a go at that" as I've spare bits and bobs lying around. Now apart form some iffy wireless cards one major problem sprung to mind. Clearly there will be 2 NIC - 1 in and in my case one out. And that one has to be wireless. But I've yet to find a ready built one (is Smoothwall or the like) that will allow me to do this with a wireless network card in the machine.
Firstly is it doable as all the traffic in my house is wireless. Secondly are there any ready built distros that will handle it for me.

some of you might have experienced the network speed problem that occurs when ipv6 is enabled. So have I. I know about the common workaround of disabling ipv6, but recently I tested the new ubuntu live system, and the problem was gone with ipv6 being enabled.
Now my question is: Do you know what ubuntu is making different? I haven't found an explanation. Is there a better workaround than blacklisting ipv6?

Just installed the new version of Ubuntu and having problems. My Dell Vostro works fine and the he Internet also works fine after giving the machine the router pass-phrase however the Windows 7 network showing but I cannot open it. the 2 daemons for Samba are running ok and I am just na bit stumped with this one.

the second is ubuntu 9.10, and i want this computer to connect to the internet of the first computer
they both connected to a B-FOCUS router 270pr but i dont want to make the router to be the one that connects to the internet i want the first computer will connect to the internet and the second will be accessing the internet of the first computer connection.

is there any problems with making adsl connection in ubuntu 10.10. Recently I've had ubuntu 10.04 and there was a problem with making adsl connectio so I was forced to you terminal in order to connect to internet. I'm asking you this because I'm planing to install Ubuntu again but if there is still connection problems then I wouldn't install ubuntu

2. Making the home server accept connections as a gateway and forward anything that comes to it to the ssh tunnel connection of the remote server.

I've had enough with the malware that finds it's way into Windows. I currently have our home desktop (WinXP) which is plugged into our high speed cable modem. We also use a laptop (Windows Vista) downstairs which currently shares the internet wirelessly from our main desktop upstairs. Whenever we want to view pics, listen to music or surf the web, I just plug in my wireless router which is connected to the cable modem and my XP box.
How is it that I can still view my desktop's pictures, listen to my desktop's tunes and surf the web on my Vista laptop downstairs once I install Ubuntu on my desktop?

running fc10 in a vmware setup Added /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0:0 to create another interface and all works fine (IPADDR=10.99.56.98). Would you expect this to be available after a reboot, last reboot I had to run ifup eth0:0

I live in india and I have a BSNL 3G dongle. I am using it on my laptop. I would like make phone calls using it. I was able to sends sms but no luck on voice call. In windows they provided a software for making voice calls, so the hardware supports it.
