Networking :: International Blockage On Ports?
May 23, 2011
As of 5 days ago I lost connectivity on HTTP, SSH, and SIP to any international address expect within South Africa.I did contact the service provider and they told me that there are not blocking any ports and everything seems fine on their side. My server is been colocated on their network. Here are our diagnostics1) I can ping from the box to any address using IP and DNS2) I can ping from an international address to the box using IP and DNS.3) I CAN NOT access HTTP, SSH, SIP from any clients outside SA.3b) CAN access all ports within SA.4)NMAP[root@localhost ~]# nmap -T5 -sV localhostInteresting ports on localhost.localdomain (127.0.0.1):

I have connected a Windows 7 pc to a Ubuntu pc using a crossover cable & TCPIP. This works fine - can ping both ways and can 'see' both icons however when I try to setup the printer in Ubuntu the task fails at a prompt fpr user name - workgroup - password prompt. It tells me I must give a password to connect to the Windows box. This setup has worked when using WinXP but fails now. I have used all passwords known to me but nada. Where in the world is the Authentication dialogue originated? I'm both new to linux commands and loosing the will to live!

I use putty and plink through ssh to support some process on my vd server (fedora-7) at godaddy. When login with plink frequently (ones per 10 seconds for just few minutes a day), the server blocks my access everywhere (sftp, http, control panel) for about 10 minutes and resumes then.Customer Support told me they do not have any blocker but I see that my ip is blocked for these 10 min. meanwhile I can access everything there from other address.

I just solved this problem, inspired by a previous post in this forum, that worked perfectly for release 10.04. Here's how I did it in Ubuntu 10.10:Open Applications/Accessories/TerminalType gksudo gedit in order to get editing rights to system files. The system will ask you for your password. After that, and if you have the authority, it will open the file browser with editing rights.Navigate to usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/gtk.immodulesThere is pair of lines that look just like this:"/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/immodules/im-cedilla.so" "cedilla" "Cedilla" "gtk20" "/usr/share/locale" "az:ca:co:fr:gvct:sq:tr:wa" You just add :en after :wa and save the file. The two lines should now look like shown below:"/usr/lib/gtk-2.0/2.10.0/immodules/im-cedilla.so" "cedilla" "Cedilla" "gtk20" "/usr/share/locale" "az:ca:co:fr:gvct:sq:tr:wa:en" Now exit the file browser, restart Ubuntu, and you're done. If you now type a comma followed by a c it should produce a

I foresee a possible need to set up an international video conference. I will be at one end, and people who haven't a great knowledge of these things will be at the other, with windows, I must presume. This is a once or twice off event, but there is a lot of significance attached to it.
How would I go about setting that up? I am presuming webcam + 1 microphone at each end, but I'd need a larger pic than you get with skype (in linux, at any rate). What software should I use? I can test it locally and debug the system.

[URL].. is a TV player client, allowing connection to several international news streams(video/audio) from around the world. it is available for Linux, Mac as well as pervasive game systems. ran ok in 10.3 but seg faults in 11.3..after manually tinkering with its audio setup in ~/.openalrc it runs good here until the seg fault...sometime it runs five minutes, sometimes 25 minutes or more...i have been unable to detect the triggering event..started by executing 'livestation' in an open terminal always results(eventually) in "Segmentation fault" and nothing else as the client disappears..anyone else seen this?or, running with no problems?

The US-International layout in K/Ubuntu seems to be extremely irritating and difficult to use. I'm wondering if I could find some help here. One thing is if a dead key doesn't work (typing in ' + t for example) it will produce nothing in Ubuntu, as opposed to windows producing 't. I must add a space after almost every apostrophe or quotation mark, which is becoming extremely difficult, tedious, irritating and unnecessary. Also the dead keys that are available are ridiculous. The dead keys I am used to and want are:
' + [letter] =
" + [letter] =
` + [letter] =
~ + [letter] =
^ + [letter] =
Which allows one to simultaneously and smoothly type English, Dutch and German but could (to a lesser extent) be used for French. What I get:
[Code]...
Which makes 's (ś) painful, as well as the many uses for apostrophes in dutch like m'n and 'k (producing mń and ḱ respectively) etc. Considering this layout is widely used and is pretty much the de facto layout in The Netherlands whose primary languages would be Dutch and English (and some German), why has it become so difficult to use? Also, how do I fix it?

The only thing I miss about Windows is the US International keyboard setting. Is there really no equivalent in Ubuntu?
The current Ubuntu US International keyboard setting is just not the same. "whodoesitwant" explained the difference last year [URL], and it has been asked about before [URL]. Does anyone know if there are plans to implement a Windows-like keyboard setting?
This may seem petty, but it's a real nuisance if you've learned to touch type in Windows. At the moment the best I can find in Ubuntu is the US International (AltGr dead keys) layout, but it's awkward and slow using the right-hand alt key.

I am used to using US International as my keyboard layout. However, the implementation appears to differ greatly between Windows and Linux (Gnome, in my case - may well be a GTK issue since GTK behaves the same on Windows). The layout uses dead keys, for example for keys such as ', ", ^, &c. allowing easy entry of characters with diacritics. On Windows pressing a dead key and then a key that has no pair associated results in the dead key's character (when paired with space) and the character from the second key. Example: Pressing ", a yields "ä", however, pressings yields "'s", as there is no pairing for ' and s.
Now, there is a language called English which makes frequent use of exactly those two characters and since it works on Windows to just type them as usual it's muscle memory for me now. Which brings me to my problem:On Linux (and GTK on Windows), there is a pairing for ' and s (among many others), resulting in Å› (which, in turn, leads to me frequently typing "itÅ›"). So typing "it's" requires me to type ', , s at the end. There are a few other combinations I'm used to that don't work. Among those is that for non-existant pairs simply nothing is the result. Typing "I'd" results in "I". Hitting one of those keys twice results in a non-spacing diacritic which breaks my habit of typing strings by first typing both quotation marks (which now result in a non-spacing acute accent or macron).
Long story short: None of the supplied US International layouts appears to function the same as in Windows - are there any that do work identically? Or any chance to configure it that way? While it may be nice to type an s with acute accent or non-spacing diacritics, those aren't exactly common needs for me.

A few months ago I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my girlfriends laptop, on her request, as she didn't like Windows any more. Since then the internet connection periodically slows down due to too many open ports/connections. Always when this happens I call our ISP and usually there are around 80-200(!) active connections to various IP's.
She is not downloading torrents or anything.
She only uses Firefox and a few open tabs as people do.
Skype is open.
Wireless internet connection.
I am thinking either Ubuntu is updating more or less constantly or the ports/connections aren't closed "after use".

I have ssh running on port 22 and that is the only thing I want in/out of this particular box (ssh, scp). But when I use iptables to set the default policies for INPUT, FORWARD, and OUTPUT to DROP and then allow 22:
iptables -I INPUT -p tcp --dport 22 -j ACCEPT
iptables -I OUTPUT -p tcp --dport 22 -j ACCEPT
ssh stops working.

I was following the directions over on the page How to watch Hulu overseas without a proxy server and got to the section about blocking ports, which I need to block port 1935. I figured this would be easy, as the mac instructions are
Code:
sudo ipfw add 0 deny tcp from any to any 1935
sudo ipfw add 0 deny udp from any to any 1935
and the Windows instructions are practically a book in itself. Since this page was lacking instructions on how to do it in Ubuntu, and ipfw seemingly doesn't exist in Ubuntu, how do I block the ports

I'm trying to open my ports all the way, but for some reason, I am unable to do so. I've forwarded the ports I want open in my router (I switched between two routers to make sure), I made exceptions in Firestarter, and I even added UFW rules, but when I use pretty much any and every port checking tool out there, the ports eithere back stealthed or closed.I'm not a complete noob, and I'm not an expert, but I'm p sure I'm doing everything right, seeing as there isn't much to screw up.The reason I'm trying to fully open these ports is because I'm getting this dumb 'No Incoming Connections

I have a system with one (sometimes two) ethernet ports, that works happily in an old Fedora 5 build. But I can't get it to work on a new Centos 5.4 build. Original system: One dedicated ethernet port on card always connected to the systems dedicated equipment and no external access (the system is the DHCP master for that network). An optional second USB dongle that is a second ethernet port, used for debugging and development. (This is a DHCP client with full conectivity. In /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts I have ifcfg-eth0, ifcfg-eth1 and a route-eth0. Neither of the ifcfg files needs an explicit HWADDR, which means the same ones work for all boxes. And when one needs to be connected to the network all is fine.
The system is being moved to Centos 5.4, most is working with minimal change, but I am having problems with the ethernet ports. If it only has the on board ethernet connected, all is fine. If you have the USB dongle connected things go wrong: This system brings up the USB ethernet first, and tries to assign it to eth0 (which fails), and then brings up the on board ethernet as eth1 (which also fails). I have tried forcing the behaviour of the network by setting the HWADDR(s), but this does not result in the on board coming up as eth0, it comes up as __tmpxxxx as follows:
ifconfig -a
__tmp226406138 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:80:66:07:A8:63
BROADCAST MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000
[Code]...
Currently the only solution is to unplug the USB dongle through restart and plug in afterwards, and this wont work when the unit is remote and in the field.

I have a box with 6 Ethernet ports. One is the main connection to the box, and the remaining are for connecting to one host each (1-1, ie, 5 different boxes connected to each of 5 ports on the box). I setup a static route to each of the hosts, and it worked. But, now it just doesn't work. There are no firewalls, etc.
Box_A: 10.2.1.200 (going to the switch to outside).It has 5 other ports: port1 (10.2.1.11) <----> Host1: 10.2.1.20 port5 (10.2.1.15) <----> Host5: 10.2.1.25 If I do, ping -I eth1 10.2.1.20, from Box_A it doesn't work. But, it used to work.

How can I open a p[ort in slackware? I am "trying" to install and use Alfresco, a DMS that runs on linux platforms. So far that has been a nightmare........
Basically, according to their support tech, port 3306 is blocked. I dont really understand because I have MySQL DB server running and listening to 3306 on that machine and no problems at all... However, they recommended to try:
Code:
telnet localhost 3306
or
Code:
telnet <machinename> 3306
but it resulted in:
Code:
telnet connect to address 127.0.0.1: Connection refused
If I understand correctly , the Alfresco support is correct, 3306 is indeed blocked. But how come mysql is running fine then? How can I unblock this port? And finally, I need to specify that I dont have ANY type of firewall or anything like that because this machine is not connected to the web... So if I dont have a firewall , what is blocking the port?

I use ping -I eth1 11.11.11.14, I get Destination Host Unreachable...
using tcpdump on eth1 shows ARP request broadcast being sent out
using tcpdump on eth2 shows ARP request received, no ARP reply being sent out
Not sure whether this config is supposed to work?
