Networking :: Home Network - Put To Use Some Old Hardware?

I have some spare machines that I want to experiment with a server/home network setup. I haven't done much with networking so I am looking for some good ideas of what to do with the machines on hand. I have the following to do whatever with:
spare machines:
1. IBM Thinkpad A22e, Pentium III, 192 mb of ram, has two nics.
2. G4 ibook, 512 mb of ram.
3. old compaq laptop, 64mb ram, pentium II or III(I can't remember)
Routers:linksys WRT54G version 8.1 running default linksys firmware Buffalo wireless router running DD-WRT and usb connector for NAS capabilities.
External HD:
2 tb Western Digital
laptops:
Lenovo laptop running Debian
HP laptop running Debian
older macbook pro running OS X
What I am looking for is suggestions on what to do with the hardware on hand. My first thought is to have the thinkpad with dual nics serve as the firewall that would then connect to the linksys router which would act more like a switch to the ibook, the compaq, and the buffalo wireless router. I was then thinking of hooking the external HD to the buffalo router to act as a NAS. I am unsure what to do with the compaq and the the ibook? Any suggestions? One thing I want is ssh access to all machines from inside and outside the network.
my wireless home network is not recognized by my network card (RealTek RTL8190 mini PCI). The post was as follows: "I am using a new computer with Windows 7 , Athlon quad core 2.60 64 bit, 8GB RAM. Internet conection works fine with ethernet but ubuntu does not see my wireless network. card (RealTek RTL 8190 ID: 10ec:8190). Have searched this forum but unable to come up with a fix. I was looking for windows XP drivers to use Ndiswrapper but could not find a list of .inf files. My network is OK and works perfectly in windows and with my 2 laptops. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Additional info: install was done within Windows using WUBI to a separate partition on my HDD. I am new to this and thouroughly confused as to the procedure for installing the drivers if they are in fact available."
I am very frustrated in that I would like to use Ubuntu 10.04 but it is useless without internet connectability. I am new to linux and do not understand where to get the appropriate drivers or how to install them. I wish someone would answer this post and either give me a clue what to do or just say "give up" and uninstall ubunutu.
Currently my office use a Cisco Firewall which will only allow the ANYCONNECT utility to do the vpn connection. I found a Linux utility (OpenConnect) which will do the same thing, but allow me more flexibility with my networking needs.What I ultimately would like to have is to have a switch that I can connect any network device into it and be connected to the office. IE (my IP Work Phone and Computer) Currently I have is a computer with fedora 13 and two network cards eth0 (home network - connected to a router) and eth1 which I would like to connect a switch to. OpenConnect communicates fine and I can see the work network from the Fedora machine. It creates a vpn0 tun/tap device and I don't know how to pass communication to/from the eth1 device.
Do I try to iptables the ports for the phone and services I need on the computer? Or do I build bridge; and If I do what am I bridging. I have tried making a bridge from eth1 to vpn0 which reply's with unsupported device or something like that.Unfortunately my network skills are bit limited and my office says "it can't be done". Their solution is for me to buy a ASA5505 (or something device) and have a static IP. I would have to make it work as my router and even then it will only DHCP 10 ip addresses; which will cause a shortage of IP addresses in the house.
I just got connected to Charter Cable Internet service a few days ago and I'm having a weird problem with my home network. Prior to this my network worked fine. On my network I have a desktop running Ubuntu 9.10/64 and Virtualbox with WinXP installed, an HTPC with Ubuntu 9.10/32 installed and a laptop dual booted with Ubuntu 9.10/32 and WinXP. The desktop and HTPC are hard wired to a wireless router and the laptop is wireless. The cable modem is hard wired to the router. I have samba installed and UFW is disabled. The problem is: with the cable modem turned off or on standby, all machines connect to each other and can transfer files, etc just fine but when I activate the cable modem all of the machines can connect to the Internet but the machines running Ubuntu can't connect to each other on the home network. If I boot the laptop into Windows, it can connect to the Linux machines just fine but if I boot it into Linux, it won't connect to the Linux machines but it can connect to the Internet and as far as the desktop, Ubuntu won't connect to the network but Windows running in the Virtualbox with bridged networking can connect to all of the machines.
I am still building my home network, and want it o be able to connect to different computers by: \pc-name
We have 2 types of computers: Computers in the workgroup WORKGROUP (2 debian, 1 vista) Computers in the domain TUE (required by our university) (3 vista, 2 xp)
Within the workgroup, I can call pc's by their name, but this is not possible by the pc's in the domain. I can however always do \ip and the 2 debians have a samba server running, which is available through \ip (and \name, for the computers in the workgroup).
I am new to Ubuntu, and I have just installed version 9.10 on my desktop PC. I need to connect my computer to my home network. Right now, I have no connection and cannot detect any of the hardware when running Ubuntu. When I switch over to my Windows XP partition, everything works fine.
As a user who is comfortable setting up a peer to peer network in Windows, how do I set up a simple peer to peer network with shares, on a standard network infrastructure (ethernet and basic dlink router), using Linux? I have two computers with Ubuntu 10.04, and would like to share files between them.Do I need to set static IP's? Why is only Windows network showing in Places/Networks?
Question two: I have 3 Windows computers (2 = XP, 1 = Win7) on my network, all with shares. When I try to access the windows shares from an Ubuntu machine, I can connect to some shares on some computers without being asked for credentials, however on other shares I am asked for credentials, but the credentials aren't accepted.I am assuming that domain = workgroup, so I enter in the workgroup name, but the dialogue refuses to let me in.
I'm having some difficulties setting up my ubuntu home server. I have vsftpd installed on my server, and I am able to use it perfectly when I am outside of my home. However, whenever I attempt to access my server through FTP from my desktop, it does not work. The file in question will load VERY SLOWLY to about 8% then the connection will drop out.My desktop and server are connected to the same router, and I feel as though this may be the issue.or vsftpd in a special way to access it through LAN?What I am trying to do specifically is use Comicpress (a Wordpress plugin) to upload comics to my server, with no luck.
I have 4 computers at home: 1 XP, 1 Laptop w/ Win7, 1 Mac, and 1 Ubuntu (hey, I like to try most everything). Anyway, I'm wanting to set up a home server to save everything on so that I don't have 3-4 copies of one file floating around. I was planning on using Ubuntu because I've always heard that Linux is a good system for a server and that Ubuntu is one of the easiest to work with. Anyway, I just installed the Ubuntu OS, and the only software that I installed with it was Samba (I don't have a printer hooked up to this computer). Is samba the best software to use for this, or is there any other option that would be easier to use? I've heard that with samba there are a lot of things you have to change using the CLI (something about chmod, whatever that is, and others like it), which doesn't bother me, I've used CLI since the years before Windows, good ol' DOS.
I wonder if someone could please direct me to a really simple guide to adding a Linux Mint 10 PC to a Windows XP home network that gives clear instructions for the actions to be carried out in both Linux and Windows XP? The Linux box is connected to the router by ethernet cable. I have tried the Samba Setup Guide [URL] but it ends cryptically with "Now you need to setup your Windows PC for domain logins" and none of the IT folk I have asked at work know what that means.
I was wondering how do you slap a packet analyzer like Wireshark somewhere between all the computers in a house and the router, so you can tell what websites are being accessed? I mean websites, specifically. I'm not trying to monitor bittorrent, IRC or other things yet - I'll get to that later. I just want to break this insanely complex task into smaller bites for now.Also, since my ISP has bandwidth caps but does not have a means for consumers to monitor total network usage, I'd like to figure out how to use Wireshark to do that as well. This, I am assuming, is easier when wireshark is running on the pipeline going into the router.
I am interested and looking forward to get a smartphone or a personal data assistant with calendar/ email/ contacts just like the iphone does.My intention is to be able to sync my smartphone's data with my home server that actually carries my PIM applications. Basically, during the day when I am not home I will modify or add/remove data from the phone. When I arrive home I would like to be able to sync my changes to my server. My laptop will be reconfigured to retrieve and sync from that server.
Proudly running with Slackware on ALL my machines (gotta love Slack!), and Apple being **** by not supporting open source and linux environment, it seems that it will be difficult to have something working out of the box and will probably require jail-breaking the device, etc.. I don't want to rely on external services such as Google calendar except for the email from Gmail.
I have a network that consists of a few desktop machines, laptops, and two Internet connected linux servers. The Linux servers are the gateways, routers, and firewalls for my desktop and laptop machines.Whenever I'm away from home; I can connect to my home machines over the Internet by first ssh'ng (technically I use Webmin; because my firewall on each Linux servers blocks ssh from the Internet.) to one of the linux servers and then ssh'ng to the desired machine on my home network.
This works fine for my home linux machines. But not my Windows machines.I'd like to be able to rdp or rdesktop to my Windows machines.Will OpenVPN allow me to accomplish this ?
I am looking to set up a home network server on an old PC. I want to be able to access files on the network hard drive in the PC, stream video or music from the "server", and use the computer as a regular desktop connected to TV as a monitor. I tried setting up an FTP server and that worked for transferring files but failed to get a good connection for streaming or fast transfers.
Was less then 1MB a second. I tried setting up a shared folder but ran into several permission errors between the host PC and the laptop that that connected to the shared folder. which way to go with this to get what I want out of it. I know if can be done just not sure how to do it.
Just installed 10.04 LTS beta on 3 computers in home. At first, two of them showed up under the network window using places. The third never did and would not find the shared printer. After all rebooted, none show up. All three can access the internet and can display a valid internal network ip address using ifconfig.
I recently installed Xubuntu 10.04 on my desktop computer that had a USB wireless adapter DLink DWA-140. I didn't have to install any additional drivers to get it to work. I put in the network SSID and the password and was connected immediately. However, when I try starting firefox it doesn't load any sites. Can anyone help me in approaching this problem. I have a DLink DIR-655 router. If I should gather more information to get this problem solved then please let me know and I will do so. Edit: Now I am unable to connect to the network. When I click the network icon in the taskbar, my home network is not visible while it is visible under another ubuntu computer I'm running.
I have a beefy Win Box desktop that i'm using as a media server and i have a home network setup already using windows xp. I had everything running fine and the PC connects flawlessly to my Bravia TV and both my ps3's so i know the network and sharing settings are setup just fine. Anyways i got tired of all the Windows 7 BS and decided i would once again use Ubuntu on my Toshiba netbook. So the question is how in the heck do i get my Ubuntu netbook to connect to the Desktop? I've tried browsing the fourms but either i'm missing something of just a little slow. What "extensions" would i need to get and how would i go about implementing it from there?
For the first time networking my home computers I'm not interested in getting Ubuntu boxes to to talk to Windows and we now have Ubuntu on all machines.
I'm trying to use the "Personal Files Sharing Preferences" but there is a message telling me I require some packages. Most unlike Ubuntu but it doesn't tell me what packages I do need.

What I would really like to do is have access to sertain directory's on other computers and have full access to read/write within the home directory.
I installed Ubuntu 10.04 32-bit on an old desktop (1.5ghz Pentium 4, 20GB hard drive, 768MB RAM) a week or two ago, at the same time that I installed Xubuntu 10.04 on an even lower performance IBM tower server. The server functions perfectly and my other (Windows XP) desktop recognized it from the start, as did the Ubuntu desktop. However, I rearranged a few ethernet cables the other day without turning off the desktops and ever since my Ubuntu machine does not recognize my server, even though all of the devices are connected via ethernet cable to a linksys router and it connects to the internet without a problem. I'm a linux newbie - this is my first move away from Windows - and I don't know where to turn. Far more confusing is the fact that, when I boot from a LiveCD, the network is recognized and I can read/manipulate files on my server without a problem. Oh, and I briefly flirted with OpenSUSE KDE (not as noob-friendly as Ubuntu, so I'm back) and encountered the same problem.
Needless to say, booting from the hard drive is preferable to booting from CD every time
I have an Acer Aspire One -532h and i just installed ubuntu 10. I am trying to crack my own Wep network at home with Aircrack-ng. So after i installed Ubuntu and installed everything in "updatemanager", i installed Aircrack,Macchanger. And as i look in "iwconfig" and ifconfig i see the Atheros driver Ath9k and Wlan0. Now my 1st question. Do i have to install madwifi or such for the aircrack to inject?
2:nd I have tried to install madwifi also but when aireplay-ng want to inject ,the whole computer freezes. How do i fix this?....have looked aound google and found that many have the same trouble...
why my VCN will not allow me to connect from my phone outside of my home network... When I do open up remote desktop it changes what it says... one day it says only available through Name.Local and then the other day it shows the IP address and says over the local network. I have tried going into gconf-editor and messing around but it still doesn't seem to work.. I'm not entirely sure how to mess around with my router.. and if that is necessary..
So I finally successfully installed Ubuntu 10.10, but I can't access my home wireless network. I dual booted with Windows 7, and it detects my local wireless network, asks for the key and connects correctly. In Ubuntu, I have to plug in an ethernet cable to access the internet (like I am now). Ubuntu doesn't detect the network, and I tried "Create New Wireless Network..." up the top right, but it doesn't connect.
I have three PC's. PC-1 is a newish Dell Vostro 320 running Win 7 as the prime OS with Ubuntu Linux 10.10 dual boot under the control of EasyBCD. PC-2 is a Dell Inspiron 6400 running Ubuntu Linux (10.10). PC-3 is an oldish Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop dual booting Win 7 and Ubuntu 10.10. All three PC's share a DSL connection to our ISP and network using the wireless router capability of the DSL box (a Billion 7401 VGP-M). All three PC's can access the internet using the DSL box both wired and wirelessly under Windows or under Linux. PC-1 is the primary PC and runs Win 7.
PC-2 (Ubuntu 10.10) is running fantastically well and can access PC-1 running Win7 as a member of WORKGROUP for print sharing and for file sharing. The primary PC-1 can also see the files on PC-2 as a member of a Windows WORKGROUP. Simple home networking is working as it should with this setup (PC-1 under Win 7 and PC-2 under Ubuntu 10.10). This has been like this since the installation of Ubuntu on PC-2, which included setting up network printing from PC-1 (Win 7) under Samba.
The problem is thus: If I boot PC-1 or PC-3 up under Linux, I lose all networking capability between the three PC's including print and file sharing, but they can all access the internet through wireless or wired connection. I have configured Samba and done all the home networking troubleshooting especially:[URL]..All to no avail. As I said, my aim to ditch Windows and move all three PC's to Linux but I can't do this unless I can get Linux home networking working properly. By properly, I mean all PC's running Linux or two under Linux and one under Windows 7 and be able to share files and a printer attached to PC-1. I am a Linux virgin and am hoping that a knowledgeable person can tell me what's going wrong and point me to setting up a simple home network under Linux. It shouldn't be this hard.
I'm not afraid to try building a router on a spare computer or on a spare dlink with tomato or other firmware. Which is recommended for a home with multiple computers, a file server, and a retiree with some time on his hands? I don't game or stream audio/video.
How could I configure Ubuntu to be setup as follows...
Wireless Client ----> Wireless Router ----> Home Server ----> Internet
What is needed to make all of the wireless traffic go to my internet connection port. I will be having two ethernet cables plugged into the system one from the wireless router and one to my internet router.
(although I'm running Solaris, I've posted here as I expect Solaris/LINUX is irrelevant) - more of a general network Q.I have a PC running Solaris 10 (hostname MARKUNIX) and a laptop running WinXP (hostname MARK-LAPTOP). Both are connected to broadband via a router. IP addresses for each are determined via DHCP (192.168.1.nn) and I do not leave either on, 24x7. I am running Oracle on MARKUNIX and want to be able to refer to it by hostname when using Oracle tools on my laptop.Each machine can ping each other ok by ip address and curiously the Solaris PC can ping MARK-LAPTOP (I'm not sure how it resolves that?) - importantly the laptop cannot ping MARKUNIX.Now I could add MARKUNIX to my laptops hosts file but that would mean changing the file each time I boot up as the ip address for MARKUNIX will keep changing (DHCP).
Is there a way to refer to MARKUNIX without having to keep changing ip addresses and use DHCP? As I understand it the 192.168 address is private and is not really the 'real' ip address and as such can be manipulated(fixed?) even whilst using DHCP?Am I right in thinking that a static ip from my broadband supplier is the ip of my connection (router) and I'll still have the same private network referencing issues?What I've covered above pretty much is the extent of my knowledge of networking so bear that in mind please.
I am attempting to set up a firewall in my home network environment. the rest of the environment is windows, sorry I am attempting now so bear with me. what I have is a cable modem coming in, then my fedora 11 box with 2 nics, then the wireless router and the rest of the network.
everything works fine until I put the linux box in. If I put the firwall in the firewall sees the internet but the wireless router directly after does not. I am doing something wrong with the dhcp I am guessing. I dont want the firewall to give the address to the network I want the router to. I tried to get the firewall to do it (yum install dhcp leafnode) but it kept saying something didn't work right.
so I figure I will let the cable modem give the firewall an ip and the router give the rest of the network their ip's but how do I get the firewall and router to see each other and allow passthrough?
how to setup a home network for learning purpose. i have two laptops and a desktop connected to a modem-router for broadband (wired connection), i want to setup one as server and the others as client.
Since I installed fedora on my desktop (there is no other OS on my desktop computer at the moment) I can't connect to my laptop which has Windows XP installed on it, although I can normally connect to internet from both computers. Here is the drawing to illustrate how everything is connected:
On the picture you can see that the phone line goes to the ADSL modem. The ADSL modem is connected to the Wireless modem with LAN cable. Wireless modem is connected to my desktop computer with LAN cable, and trough the wireless connection to the laptop. Internet is working fine for both computers, but desktop can't see laptop and vice versa. What do I need to do in order to see the laptop?
