Networking :: Centos Cannot Ping Hosts On The Same Subnet After Change To Static Ip
Jul 26, 2011
I am using centOS 5.0. After I change from DHCP to static IP address, I cannot ping hosts on the same subnet. The error message says destination host unreachable. Before I made the changes I was able to ping and now even I change it back to DHCP I still cannot ping with the same destination host unreachable message. The centOS is running on VMware on a Windows host.
ifconfig shows
eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0C29:A1:9A:10
inet addr: 192.168.0.202 Bcast:192.168.0.255 Mask: 255.255.255.0
inet6 addr ......
After pinging 192.168.0.106 (106 is on and other host can ping it), arp -a shows ? (192.168.0.106) at <incomplete> on eth0 I tried different ways by disabling the firewall and and disabling SE protection. No Luck.

I just changed my CentOS server from DHCP to static IP address. After the change, I cannot ping other hosts on the same subnet. (I can ping the CentOS itself).The IP address of CentOS is 192.168.0.202.After pinging 192.168.0.106 (106 is on and other host can ping it), arp -a shows? (192.168.0.106) at <incomplete> on eth0 It looks ARP cannot resolve MAC address of hosts 192.168.0.106.

I am trying to configure dhcpd to provide two different pools of IPs- one for dynamically named hosts specific to MAC addresses, and another for everyone else.So, a machine with X MAC address connects, gets an IP from e pool, and the server updates DNS with the address under a specific hostname.For the other pool, it just assigns the IP, no DNS updates.The "class" function doesn't appear to allow anything but pattern matching, and I can't find anything that specifies what "allow" and "deny" options therere for the pool command.Here's my config so far - will this do what I want?
Code:
key dhcpd {
algorithm hmac-md5;

I installed apache2 on my Ubuntu machine and I am trying to access the server from another subnet. The server is connected using ethernet and has a static ip address. I can ping from the server to any machine in the other subnet but non of the machine on that subnet can ping the server. iptables does not seem to be running
Code:
# service iptables status
iptables: unrecognized service
and its rules are
Code:
# iptables -L
Chain INPUT (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination
Chain FORWARD (policy ACCEPT)
target prot opt source destination
[code]....
What is preventing my machine from being accessed from the other subnet?

The wireless connected hosts do not respond to pings from wired ones or other wireless ones. And all the wired connected hosts respond to pings from any wireless one. The same problem applies also to ssh connections exactly as in the ping issue.
The switch the ADSL modem/router and the Access point are all 3 different machines correctly connected to each other. I do not have a firewall in any of my hosts, all run Slackware 13.1, the wireless ones use "wext" driver and not "ndiswrapper". All wireless hosts login successfully, WPA & DHCP works fine and internet connection goes without a problem. But the fact I can only connect from a wireless host to a wired one is puzzling.

i'm running some virtual Fedora installations on a windows server 2008 with hyper-v. Most of them are Fedora 12 and 13. Everything works fine for some years. Yesterday i want to upgrade a F13 machine to F14 by netistall. The upgrade ran without any problems. After the reebot the machine was off the network. All the networkconfigs by DHCP are OK, IP address, gateways, DNS settings and so on. But the machine can't ping or connect to other hosts. I tried an VM from scratch with both F14 i386 and x86_64 - same ****. This is the first time i had such a problem by upgrading Fedora machines.

Host machine is a "2.6.32-24-generic-pae #38-Ubuntu" and VMware Workstation version is 7.1.2 build-301548.In addition to those three IP addresses(192.168.1.254/24, 192.168.1.68/24 and 192.168.1.221/24) seen on a drawing, there are four identical virtual machines inside the 192.168.1.68/24 machine. Virtual machines are named Olive0-3. Olive0 has IP address 192.168.1.100, Olive1 has 192.168.1.101, Olive2 has 192.168.1.102 and Olive3 has 192.168.1.103.

What I can ping
Host A -> Host B
Host B -> Host A
Host A -> Router B
Host B -> Router A
Host A -> OpenVPN B
Host B -> OpenVPN A
VPN Server -> VPN Client
VPN Client -> VPN Server
What I can't ping
VPN Server to any client side host local address
VPN Client to any server side host local address
I have searched and searched for this but can not find any answers. Why can I not ping Host B from my OpenVPN server?

Fresh install of 10.04.1 server; installs seamlessly; finds network no problem.
However, establishing static connection is driving me batty. Will not take. I've reconfigured "interfaces" file several times. My fingers are numb ifdown-ing and ifup-ing and /etc/init.d/network restart-ing.
I have two files in /etc/network ... interfaces and interfaces~ (one static and the other dhcp). I can switch them in and out of play. The dhcp works and pings out like a champ. static is dead, just dead. Cannot ping router ... nothing.

I have TWO L3 + router switch (say switch1 and switch2). I created VLAN100 with VLAN ID 100 in both the switches. I created router 192.168.1.1/24 in Switch1. I created router 192.168.2.1/24 in Switch2. Switch1 is connected with 1.x/24 PCs. PCs are configured with 1.1 gateway. Switch2 is connected with 2.x/24 PCs. PCs are configured with 2.1 gateway. Both Switch1 and switch2 are connected by a trunk to carry VLAN100 data.
1)I have few PCs of 1.x connected to say Switch1 Is it possible for PC with IP 192.168.1.100(x) to ping PC with IP 192.168.2.100(y)?What are the configuration required in both switches to make them communicate ? All the device in both the subnets should ping/communicate with each other.
2)Move PC (192.168.1.100) to switch2. Move PC (192.168.2.100)to switch1.What will happen when PC(1.100) ping (2.100) and vice versa?What will happen when PC(say 1.80 in switch1) pings PC (say 1.100 in switch2) and vice versa? What will happen when PC(say 1.80 in switch1) pings PC (say 2.100 in switch1) and vice versa?

Step 1 : In Hyper-v Machine i have created two Virtual Ports.
Step 2 : Now for these two diff ports two ip address with different subnet mask(e.g 192.168.9.19 and 192.16.9.20)have been assigned(and have checked using ifconfig).
Step 3 : In Host machine i have added one subnetmask for one machine next one for another machine,however i m not able to ping both the ports from either of the machines having static ip 192.168.9.13 or having ip 192.16.9.107.
Step 4 : If i add same subnet mask for both machine it is pinging properly between 2 machines.

I have two NIC Ethernet card (eth1 and eth2) on the same computer (linux) connected by a cross cable.
The two interfaces are on the same subnet :
eth1 : 192.168.200.1 255.255.255.0
eth2 : 192.168.200.2 255.255.255.0
Then i add a route for each interface :
route add -net 192.168.200.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 eth1
route add -net 192.168.200.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 eth2
Finally,i'm trying to ping :
ping 192.168.200.1 -I eth2 or ping 192.168.200.2 -I eth1
Ping command reaches error : Destination Host Unreachable

I have a motherboard which has 4 x 1Gbps Ethernet controllers. I would like to use it as a Gateway for my home network. I have a static IP from my ISP which I can use to configure eth0 (I haven't done it yet as the LE-565 is currently sitting behind my Netgear router until I've got DHCP working). I would like to use eth1, eth2 and eth3 for my LAN. How do I set things up so that DHCP is handing out IP addresses on the same subnet (192.168.0.0/24) on all three interfaces?
P.S. I think what I'm asking is: how do I combine all 3 interfaces to behave like a switch (ie. just like my Netgear router)?

My company hosts five Servers with CentOS 5 installed in a Data Center. The Data Center assigns a VLAN to each customer so that they can organize customers and also count traffic. The VLAN assigned to my company is in the form 62.103.X.X with a subnet mask 255.255.255.240 so the IPs that we can use in our Servers are 13. The first IP in the VLAN (for example 62.103.1.1) is the Gateway and the rest, that are calculated from the subnet mask, are assigned to servers(62.103.1.2 up to 62.103.1.14).
The problem I have is that we have run out of IPs in our VLAN. We have used all IPs and we want some more. The Data Center can assign new IPs but not grow our VLAN IPs by expanding the subnet mask. So they gave us a new VLAN with some IPs (for example 62.104.X.X with a subnet mask 255.255.255.192) They told me that I had to use as gateway the gateway of the first VLAN 62.103.1.1 and assign the new IPs as usual. So I assigned to one of the CentOS 5 servers the IP 62.104.1.2 and set the gateway to 62.103.1.1. Unfortunately this did not work and we could not establish connectivity to the Internet.Is it possible to assign a gateway outside of the IPs that are in the subnet? Could it be a problem with the VLAN setup by the Data Center?

I will try to explain a bit first about my network typology: I have one cent os 5.5 machine with 2 nics - external one 86.x.x.122 and internal one with 2 IPs: 192.168.1.1 and 89.x.x.121. The ideea is that I have a public subnet (86.x.x.120/29) of IPs which are routable only through 86.x.x.122 so I have a webserver hosted on a different machine with the IP of 89.x.x.122 and GW 89.x.x.121 - everything works perfectly fine, except that I cannot access from the internal network 192.168.1.0 / 24 the so called DMZ (roughly) - the 89.x.x.122.
What really makes me crazy is that I setup the IPtables rules correctly because I can access the webserver from the outside world but I cannot accessit from the internal network...
what I'm missing - why the 192.168.1.0/24 cannot see the 89.x.x.122 machine... What IPtables rules should I add?

I've got a bit of a question. My network is laid out like this:
The role assignments are thus:
Firewall - sorts out the passing through to the 3 different networks, and acts as the traffic proxy.
Windows 2003 server - Does Active Directory and DNS
CentOS server - FTP and DHCP
Now, my problem is I need the CentOS server to be able to assign IP address to both networks, however, the CentOS server can *ONLY* be connected via the one interface to the firewall. It needs to assign the Windows 2003 server and the eth0 of the firewall an IP address via static DHCP, but it also needs to able to assign the clients dynamically via any address in the 10.23.1.0/24 range. I was thinking that I would be able to create static only assignments for the servers via their MAC addresses, and only have 1 dynamically assignable entry for the clients, and then get the firewall to allow ports 67 and 68 to flow freely between eth0 and eth1, but I wasn't entirely sure of the best way to do all this.

Is it possible to have different /etc/hosts file for different network connections without having to go in and change it every time? The why: I have dyndns and port forwarding to get to my desktop. My laptop is sometimes on the same network, and sometimes not. Also, sometimes the dyndns doesn't update properly, or the outside connection is down, but I want to get to my desktop (and I'm too lazy to walk up the stairs). I'd like to be able to keep one set of bookmarks, ssh command aliases, etc. that would always get to it the fastest and most reliable way possible.

I am using ubuntu Lucid and connected to a network with windows machines.Our network admin changed some settings in the network, and all machines need to change their subnet masks to access local machines (e.g. I am getting "unable to mount" message when I try to connect other Windows PC's on the network.)
If I open the connections panel, and "Edit" the "Auto eth0", I can get: IPv4 Settings -> Method -> Manual -> Addresses -> Add .And I am pretty sure I will put new subnet mask address into "Netmask" box, what to put others? Namely:
IP Address, Netmask, Gateway and below:
DNS Servers, Search Domains
I can get some info about my network connection by right clicking network icon on the panel, and select "Connection Information" Tried to fill manual settings with some of those info (the ones made some sense to me) but I still cannot mount windows network drives, plus my internet connection dies.So, is there any way to change Subnet Mask "ONLY", without touching any other setting.

I am a developer, not a network admin - sorry if this ia dumb question. I need to test an application on CentOS 55 64 bit. The instalation went fine and initially I let DHCP work its magic. The router IP address ia 192.168.0.1 and all other VM's I have are granted dynamic ip address on this range (i.e. 192.168.0.x). However, the CentOS vm got an IP address that looks like it belongs on a different subnet :192.168.1.1
The VM (vmware desktop) network setting for this VM uses "Bridged: Connected directly to the physical network". I can ping the host (Windows 7 64 bit) and the host can ping it (it been the VM) - but no other computer on the network can see it. To make things easier, I changed the network configuration to use a static IP address. Here are my configuration files:
/etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0
DEVICE=eth0
BOOTPROTO=static
HWADDR=00:0C:29:83:4B:A4
ONBOOT=yes
TYPE=Ethernet

I have followed some instructions to change to a static ip address and have now lost my connection to my router. The mistake I made was not copying the original "interfaces" file before making changes.The file originally had: auto wlan0 iface wlan0 inet (something - I thought it was loopback but didn't work when I added it).
The instruction told me to put:
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet static
address 192.168.1.100
netmask 255.255.255.0
network 192.168.1.0
broadcast 192.168.1.255
gateway 192.168.1.1
Which I did, using my own ip numbers, except for "broadcast". I didn't add that in because I didn't have a clue what to put there. When it didn't work, I tried putting it back to what I originally had except I can't rememebr that last bit. I added dhcp instead of what I thought it was but this didn't work either.

Can't change from dhcp to static ip address.I've installed Oracle's version of Linux Redhat 5, but I'm having no success changing from dhcp to a static IP address. My machine is plugged directly into a Belkin router which has the IP address: 192.168.2.1.If I use the gui: /usr/bin/system-config-network and set the network device to dhcp,it works fine. But if I set the IP address manually, I get no internet traffic, and if I ping an internet website, "network unreachable".The installation instructions for Oracle say that they want a full domainname. I've tried gateway.2wire.net. This worked in the last place I did a successful installation.It was the address of my ATT router. If I plunked that into a browser, I got the router configuration.
