Ubuntu Multimedia :: 10.04 - Graphics And Sound Works But Crappy

Nov 11, 2010

every time i watch a video at ....., or use audacious to listen to music (or instead use grooveshark) the sound jumps forward automatically for some strange reason.

The other problem is the graphics. Everytime i enter a website i see the graphics but pixelated. At 100%. Well. i don't see all images or banners like this, just a few. (i.e:Google logo, flickr logo).

im using a laptop. Acer 5735Z. Mobile Intel Graphics Media Acelerator 4500MM

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Audio [Swapped Channels - Crappy Sound]

Dec 8, 2010

I have recently installed Ubuntu 10.10 and it got really nice interface and is pretty user friendly, but I got an issue directed to sound. I have used Ubuntu 9 last time and had the same problems. So here are my problems: I got Realtek AC'97 ALC655 on-board sound card with 5.1 support and hardware mixing. By reading posts on google and this forums I got an idea it should work OOB but it won't.

The issues: *when I set the sound output to 5.1 + 1 stereo input it makes all the speakers work but act in weirdo way and testing the each speaker confuses me even more, because it's like(test=real sound source):

rearleft=subwoofer
rearright=center
center=frontleft
frontleft=rearright
frontright=rearleft
subwoofer=frontright. o.O

*the sound quality is crappy, it feels like it is old radio player because it requires some seconds for sound to 'condensate' and play normally with some crackles and other distortions.. And I'd like to also ask what sound system is mainly used in Ubuntu? Is it alsa,pulse or OSS? Since I can't find a way to see it.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Video Looks So Crappy Compared To Windows?

Feb 2, 2011

first of all im new to OpenSuse i have been using different distros since early 90's if theres one i havent tried i would be very surprised anyway im very picky when it comes to sound and picture maybe its the fact that im a developer and also art director anyhoo i got tired of my HTPC ( windows ) i thought linux has to be able to do it just as well i mean i only use it for movies and music but was surprised to see how video works in linux picture is somewhat ok compared to Windows but movement is another story even vsync off it looks like a old VHS tape when it should be DVD. Cam-panning is even worse. How is this and can it be fixed?

Ubuntu :: Crappy Belkin N150 Router?

Jun 18, 2011

I joined this forum so I can say my experience with the crappy belkin N150 router. It appears you need to run the setup cd under windows to make the router 'see' the modem. Under linux as someone pointed out you can easily enter the router setup from a browser ( enter 192.168.2.1 ) and connect to the router only (wired or wireless connection) but not the internet. Does anyone have any idea what the windows setup is doing to connect the router to the modem and how to do it under linux in the browser?

Red Hat / Fedora :: Firefox Fonts Look Crappy For Web Contents

Apr 23, 2009

I have Fedora 10 running and the firefox fonts look really crappy for web content, especially for certain web sites. I have Samsung SyncMaster 941BW 19" widescreen LCD monitor. I have NVidia GE Force 5500FX graphics card. Following are the things I tried after going through some articles on web.

1. Installed msttcorefonts and webcorefonts packages. Set Firefox to use 'Times New Roman', 'Arial' and 'Georgia'.
2. Got freetype with BCI enabled.
3. Changed DisplaySize to enable 96DPI and changed the same on Gnome font settings.
4. Enabled LCD subpixel smoothing and full hinting.

I've tried both "nv" and "kmod-nvidia-173xx" drivers for the NVidia card. I tried 1440x900 (native resolution) and 1152x864 (seems to be next best but everything looks stretched). I have seen some improvements with above, but still the fonts strain my eyes. I use 'Bitstream Vera' fonts for application. The fonts and display look splendid within Fedora, but the problem is with the web content in Firefox. I use my system primarily for web browsing.

General :: Best Distro For Old Crappy Laptop? (HP Pavilion Zt1130)

Jan 19, 2010

I got a laptop for free. It's an old POS, but it was free, and it basically works for pretty much what I am going to use it for. Web Browsing, Cloud Computing type stuff.NOTE: I am an extreme Google Whore. To paraphrase Jay-Z: Google Mail, Google Docs, all Google Everything. lol. when considering my question, please keep this in mind.anyhow, this is what I am working with:

HP Pavilion zt1130
Windows XP SP3
Intel Celeron Processor 1133MHz
684MB RAM
S3 Graphics Twister 16MB
20GB Hard Drive
DirectX 9.0c
Linksys Wireless-G Network Adapter

as I mentioned above, I use Google Stuff for my primary computing Needs. GMail, Google Docs for Office stuff, Reader for RSS, etc. with Google Gears to make these apps usable offline. I also use LastFM, Twitter, etc. My preferred browser is Chrome, but I can settle for Firefox if necessary. I am trying to figure out if getting off of Windows XP, and switching to Linux might help with boosting the performance of this old, crappy machine(does the OS even matter in regards to this?), and maybe push it more towards being more of a Cloud Computing machine. and which Distro would probably be best for me and my computer.

I know absolutely nothing about Linux beyond common, basic stuff. So anything that requires some complex set up is not what I am looking for. I'd also need a decently easy to use GUI. But I am unsure about hardware compatibility and things like that. I don't wanna wipe my HD, and break the computer trying to install Linux,

Debian Multimedia :: VLC Playback Broken By Deb-multimedia Upgrade

Jun 14, 2011

I am using debian squeeze and did an aptitude upgrade yesterday. Today I've found that VLC won't play any video; the files open and the audio plays, but the video is black. The aptitude log is below.

I note that VLC received a security upgrade a few days ago, but my suspicion is that the source of this problem is more likely to be the upgrade of libavcodec52 from version 4:0.5.2.6 -> 5:0.6.1+svn20101128-0.2. I believe this upgrade came from the debian-multimedia stable repo I have enabled.

Does this sound right, and what could I do to fix my VLC playback? This is new territory for me, and I'm slightly surprised that such an upgrade would come from the stable branch of debian-multimedia (although I know this is not an official source).

Ubuntu Multimedia :: No Sound After Upgrade To 10.4

Aug 18, 2010

I am relatively new to the world of Ubuntu and I know others have had very similar problems but I have yet to find a solution. I recently upgraded to 10.4 and lost my sound. I tried installing and uninstalling PulseAudio and various ALSA utilities but I have not been able to resolve my issue. Strangely, when I try to play an mp3 in an application like VLC and then open up the PulseAudio volume control, I can see a playback bar as if an audio signal is going out. I am not, however, able to hear any sound via internal speaker, analog headphones, usb headset, etc. I ran aplay -l and got the following result:

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Missing /dev/dsp After Upgrade To 10.10?

Oct 27, 2010

I run Mythbuntu. Relevant to this thread, I have the following hardware: An Nforce4 onboard sound card A pcHDTV HD5500 ATSC/NTSC/ClearQAM tuner A Pinnacle PCTV HD card, also tunes ATSC/NTSC/ClearQAM Sound from the PC goes through an optical cable to a receiver for 5.1 digital / DTS audio. That's working smashingly. The digital portions of both the pcHDTV and Pinnacle cards play in realtime and record equally well. Huzzah! Additionally, the analog video capture works -- the /dev/vbi0 and vbi1 devices are there. It's the analog audio capture with which I'm having problems. With Ubuntu 10.04 and earlier the analog v4l devices were accompanied by /dev/dsp#. Now they're gone. Where'd they go?

As a side note, I know ALSA sees my video capture audio devices, as alsamixer lets me choose among the three cards -- one NVidia (set as default), and two Connexant CX8801 devices. Everything's unmuted, set to a high volume, and capture enabled. I look in /dev/snd and I see a bunch of bs I don't recognize, nor does it seem to have very intuitive naming. Just for giggles, in the Myth backend setup, I went ahead and manually set the non-existent /dev/dsp0 as the audio capture device for the pcHDTV card. Then I methodically did a ln -s /dev/snd/controlC0 /dev/dsp0, replacing controlC0 with each file in /dev/snd in turn and turning on live analog TV through the pcHDTV. No permutation worked. So then I did cat /proc/asound/devices, with the following results:

Code:

2: : timer
3: : sequencer
4: [ 0- 2]: digital audio capture
5: [ 0- 1]: digital audio playback

[code].....

I'm guessing that lines 11 and 13 refer to my pcHDTV and Pinnacle cards. With that in mind, in Myth backend setup I replaced the audio capture setting with ALSA:hw:1,0 and 2,0 respectively. Is there any way without having to go through recompiling the kernel to restore /dev/dsp functionality? If not, then how can I tell what devices are my analog audio capture devices so I can point Myth backend setup to the correct devices?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Sound After Upgrade To Karmic?

Jan 5, 2010

After i upgraded to karmic i experienced that the sound of spotify was at times strange. When i started a new song there was some strange plucking sounds, can most be understood as the sound a old LP-player makes when there is dust on the record. Not much but more than enough that I can hear it and wish it wasn't there. After some time of playing the songs sometimes was totally distorted by "disturbance" and it became impossible to even hear that there was a song there. Like when you are out of reception of a radio channel.

I did some research and upgraded to the wine1.2 with "custom" pulsaudio drivers. Then the total distortion was gone, but the, always present, plocking sound still was there. I have tested adjusting PCM volume, have some volume on mono, upgrading to newer pulsaudio drivers. The same problem is when ever my dear computer i producing sound. Spotify,firefox, rythmbox and mplayer. I can't see any answers after spending some time on google. I hoped i could fix this without deleting and removing pulsaudio.

Where do I look for guidance on such a kernel upgrade? My impression is that grub permits booting to an earlier kernel so a boo is recoverable. While not particularly relevant, my card is a Chronos Video Shuttle II.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Upgrade To 10.10 = No Sound In Mythtv?

Oct 13, 2010

that said on to my problem. I have a Hauppauge hvr 950-q that I had been using with 10.04(64-bit) since it came out with no issues at all(non that i could not fix anyways) had mythtv set up using mythubuntu and all was great. I upgraded to 10.10(64-bit) last night and cannot get sound to work during live tv. If i watch an old recording the sound works. Sound also works everywhere else on my system. Before the upgrade the audio setting in the backend configuration of the tv card was set to /dev/dsp2 this no longer works. if i put it at that(i have to enter it manually) then i have no sound and if i try to change Channel the tv feed crashes.

I have tried /dev/dsp2,1 i even tried /dev/snd/contolC1 wich i got from browsing around in /dev and found this to point to my 950-q all with same results.If i use alsa:default as the audio device in the backend i still get no sound but i am at least able to change channel.everything works in TVTime.i am simply at a loss. My next step was going to be a clean install of 10.10 but i thought i would check here before taking such a drastic step.
