OpenSUSE Install :: Older Version Of Mozilla Firefox Internet Browser / Ati Drivers / Sound Drivers

May 9, 2011

after few years being limited with my pc configuration (windows OS) I realized that linux or it's distributions is the best invention in 21 century. And finally I am starting use it. openSUSE 11.4 installaition succesful, I updated it and it looks I don;t have any problems, but I got few questions.

1. How install older version of mozilla firefox internet browser here? I can't install some plugins because it's a firefox beta 12 version, for example. I am quake fan, o I like play quake live, but i can't install quake plugin, because my firefox is beta version.

2. Does I got all drivers instantly installed to my mashine? ATI video drivers, sound drivers ect??

3. Are there any How-To guides which can teach me, how I can improve my desktop? gadgets, 3D desktop ect...?

Ubuntu :: Ati Graphics Drivers Don't Appear To Work?

Aug 18, 2010

While trying live usb versions of different gnome and kde distributions, i noticed very unusable performance, however since i read that live media versions of linux did not perform well, i merely assumed that was the reason.

The sad thing is though, i installed ubuntu 10.4 x64 and i am still having the same problems. The only way to get the system slightly usable is to completely disable desktop effects. However, even then, it sort of feels like windows xp before you have installed graphics drivers - like it's not using the hardware at all.

Even the little fish screensaver is basically unrunnable.

My graphics card is an ati radeon x1950 pro AGP version. I read on their site that they only support up to x-org 11.4 and i heard that the linux distributions as of now are beyond that - so i cannot install the official drivers for it (whether they are any good anyway?). I saw in the package manager there are radeonhd drivers also, but i didn't really know what these are and this card is before ati started making their hd series.

So basically, i don't really know what to do or where to turn to in regards to this.

Some other small, unrelated questions are:

How can i increase the amount scrolled with each click of my scroll wheel so it's equivalent to windows? it seems to be one line at the moment, where as in windows i think it is something like 3 - whatever the case, it seems painfully slow.

Also, of my 5 button intellimouse explorer, strangely, the extra forward and back buttons seem to work, but the middle click button doesn't - or at least, holding it in and dragging the mouse to scroll doesn't seem to work - or should it be used for something different in linux?

Ubuntu :: Can't Boot Up After Graphics Drivers

Jan 29, 2011

I made my Ubuntu-server(with GNOME desktop) unbootable after playing with the binary drivers for nvidia(my card is gtx 470). I was able to use it in the past with the proprietary drivers, but somehow I tweaked some settings, tried to install new drivers etc and actually I don't remember much of what I did because I had finals at school so my ubuntu install just remained unbootable like that. All I know is that I can't even boot in recovery mode (command line). I tried to boot with a live cd, chroot into the ubuntu partition and fix the graphics but it didn't work.

Ubuntu :: Enabling Graphics Drivers In 11.04?

I'm using an ATI Radeon HD 6850, and although drivers aren't enabled, 11.04 fits my resolution, and has animation/shadows. I need to enable drivers so games like Minecraft will run better. Whenever I install the drivers, 11.04 fails to load, or it'll just give me a barrage of glitches. How can I install the latest ATI Drivers for Ubuntu 11.04?

Ubuntu :: Use Older Graphics Drivers With 11.04?

Jun 13, 2011

For me, Ubuntu 11.04 can only use "software rasterizer" with Open GL. I think this is possibly because I have to disable kernel mode-setting on my PC and the new drivers with 11.04 need KMS to work. Though that's just my guess. In Ubuntu 10.04 hardware accelerated OpenGL works fine with KMS off. So does anybody know how I can use those older drivers in 11.04? OR Does anybody know how to make Ubuntu 11.04's drivers work with KMS disabled?

Fedora :: F15 Freezes On Different Hardware And Graphics Drivers?

Jul 3, 2011

My workplace is conducting a pilot of fedora15 for adoption as our SOE desktop. We've installed on 3 desktops and two laptops, and are experiencing an intermittent lock-up on each platform. In all cases so far over our two week trial, whilst users are performing routine work on the gnome desktop (e.g. email, web browsing, etc), the screen will freeze, and the mouse/keyboard appear to be inoperable, so it is impossible to go to a virtual desktop, etc. Only a hard reboot brings the PC back, and there are no logs, core dumps, etc.

We've been trying to eliminate sources, and have seen the fault on the following combinations:

* AMD/Intel
* A variety of graphics hardware (e.g. nvidia, intel 945)
* nvidia drivers (various versions), and nouveau
* Gnome 3 in normal and fallback mode
* rpms from the initial F15 release, and also after a full yum update (last week).

We have not been able to correlate the lock-up with particular usage patterns or system load. Sometimes, the desktop will be usable for a day or more, and other times, we may see three lockups in an hour.

There is a bug on this matter:

[URL]

I am raising the matter here to see, because I am puzzled as to why we are experiencing it on all platforms, and yet it does not seem to be so prevalent in the wider community.

OpenSUSE :: PC Speed Under 11.4 - Radeon Graphics Drivers From YaST

Jul 28, 2011

I've recently managed to install 11.4 with both Gnome 2.32 and KDE 4.6, moving from 11.3. However, there seems to be a significant speed degradation in terms of opening applications, switching windows, clicking on links etc. I have installed the Radeon graphics drivers from YaST, without much success. IMHO, Gnome seems slightly faster than KDE; however, it's still not great.

My machine worked well with 11.3 and seemed to be going pretty well; however, I wanted new and shiny, so. The PC has an AMD dual-core chip (can't remember the exact spec). Alternatively, is there good benchmarking software I could try to see if I can get an idea of my real speed?

I want to try to reinstall the ATI proprietary drivers eventually. I have them on the hard drive, but I have had no luck installing them using the CLI so far.

Ubuntu :: Hardware - Unable To Get The Drivers For My Graphics Card

Feb 14, 2010

I just installed Ubuntu 9.10, and it seems I'm unable to get the drivers for my graphics card. I know they exist, as I've downloaded them before (I switched back to Windows for a short period. Bad idea there. :/), and I know they work fine, but when I go to "System > Administration > Hardware Drivers" (where I've always gotten them from), they aren't there.

The only difference between this install and my old one, is that I used a USB drive to install, instead of a disk (I had run out).

Although I did have to change to boot order in the BIOS to get it to boot into the drive, I don't think that's the issue.

Ubuntu :: Installing Intel HD Graphics Drivers On Maverick 10.10?

I guess thats where Windows comes in but I really like the stability of Linux and the fact it is Open Source and free. Wish I was a cool programmer or someone who has worked with the OS for a while, that would make things a lot easier. Where can I study up and get a little more educated about what I am doing? Anyway hopefully someone can answer the driver question. Lastly is there anyway to get Hardware Acceleration if using an Intel i5 system?

Ubuntu :: Graphics And Wireless Drivers Both Just Died After Update

Mar 17, 2011

I installed a routine update through the update manager this morning and when the next time I turned my laptop on neither my graphics driver or my wirless driver were working. When I turned my laptop on I got an error saying:

Ubuntu is running in low graphics mode. The following error was encountered. You may need to update your configuration to solve this.
(EE) NVIDIA: Failed to load the NVIDIA Kernel module. Please check your systems Kernel log for additional error messages.
(EE) Failed to load module "nvidia" (module-specific error, 0)
(EE) No drivers available

After clicking ok to this message I get another with a series of options about how to resolve this ranging from troubleshoot to restart to run in low graphics just once. Once I open the session my wireless won't load up, but I can still connect to ethernet. I'm using a 3 year old HP pavilion laptop running Lucid Lynx. I'm not sure if this problem is related to the update, but it's the only thing that happened out of the ordinary before I ran into this problem. Unfortunately I cannot remember what was included in the update.

General :: Install The Drivers For Nvidia Graphics Card?

Jun 8, 2011

I'm trying to install the drivers for my nvidia graphics card. I downloaded the shell script from the nvidia website. However, there's something peculiar going on. When I execute the shell script it says it cannot find my kernel headers, yet I can verify that my /usr/include/linux/kernel.h does exist. I have selinux on, but just installed os with it on, so contexts are fresh. Checked them as well. After doing some research I found something out. When I run a 'uname -a' I get this.

Code:
Linux ariel 2.6.18-194.el5PAE #1 SMP Fri Apr 2 15:37:44 EDT 2010 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
Yet when I ran 'yum install kernel-devel kernel-headers' they installed the following versions.
Code:
kernel-headers-2.6.18-238.12.1.el5.i386
kernel-devel-2.6.18-238.12.1.el5.i686
Shouldn't they be

[Code]...

I see that the error in the nvidia shell script can't locate the header files for the RUNNING kernel version which makes sense. Why would yum install that version instead of the one in 'uname -a'? Or am I misunderstanding something?
