I formatted a new 2tb drive with XFS filesystem it appears as /dev/sdc on my system and I can mount it ok (I've copied stuff to it and can read and write from it fine)
However when I do fdisk -l it says invalid partition table for this drive only.
I'm assuming I should have created a partition like /dev/sdc1 and then formatted it?
Is there any risk/disadvantage in leaving it as it is - it will hold media files mostly.
using onboard windows disk management i have made 75gb unallocated to add to the aforementioned ntfs data partition. but, after resizing extended partition, will i need to fix grub even though i will be adding the unallocated space to a storage partition and not the ubuntu boot partition?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI used to have three partitions: Win7, Fedora 12 and a NTFS-Storage-Partition.Now I had to reinstall Win7, it doesn't see any files on the storage partition;Windows shows the whole rest of the disk including the linux partition as one drive with 7gb of 80gb free, I can also open it but then there is nothing in it.Linux is still working and everything on the storage partition is still there and accessible in linux.any suggestions? do i have to tell windows the partitions or does it have to do a scan or something?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a fairly large home partition,and several directories with content in, that currently reside in my home account.I now have two slackware installs and would like the content to be available to both installs.Is it OK/advisable to make a directory in /home that has the content in, that both user accounts are mapped to for the content (music and video mainly)? I was thinking of setting the folder as readable/writable by all. This bit makes me wonder if I might encounter problems.There is no spare partition or alternative drive that I could use for this purpose and there is too much data for me to duplicate it in both user accounts.

It's my understanding that I need to create 2 partition ( Since I want to use ext4 for the system which windows doesn't recognize?). But when I created two logical partition and installed ubuntu onto the second partition <sdc6>, I can't seem to boot into there,the screen stays on the white cursor blinking mode, and the usb isn't being read. Is there any way that I could do this? I just want half used as storage and half as Ubuntu system.

My linux system is running from the ram (ramfs/tmpfs). Crated a partition type 'tmpfs'. Processes are reading/ writing from/to this partition files. I am looking for utilities to sync this partition to the remote storage regularly (say, once in 10 sec). Normal copy command will produce partial files, if the copy is getting executed during a write operation.

Hybrid Storage harddisks use a large non-volatile cache to save power and improve speed. I wanted to ask if there's a reasonably simple way to simulate that under Linux. Ideally there would be a FUSE-filesystem that does this, For now this is purely theoretical, but my setup would be a small home server (Sheeva Plug) with an external USB harddisk that goes to sleep after a few minutes of inactivity. To keep it powered down as long as possible, I would like to use a 16GB SD card as a cache for the harddisk, thus simulating Hybrid Storage.
The only possible solutions I found thus far were Hierarchical storage management packages for enterprise use, which are way too expensive for this task.
I have properly ejected a USB memory stick and removed it from the port, but it remains in my 'Places', on the side pane of Nautilus. The /media directory is empty.

I have tried to automate the configuration of a usb drive with not much success.
The problem that I have is that I have a large amount of usb drives that have a partition table of type "loop" and I need to change them to "msdos". The size of the drives vary and I need to use FAT32 or FAT16 file system.
I've tried various partitioning commands and gui applications but cant find one that I can give a one line command to to set the partition table, maximum partition size and file system.
I have a 300 Gb Hard drive, I used to have windows xp on it but decided to install ubuntu, so what I did (after some suggestions) was to create 3 partitions, one of 30 Gb for windows (I use Adobe software), one of 10 Gb for Ubuntu 9.10 and the rest as a common partition used for storage. Started ok, but I really got hooked with ubuntu and now my partition is full!. My question is ( and here is where I show my deep ignorance and shame): can I "expand" the ubuntu partition gaining space from the storage one? If not, how many Gb would you recommend for an Ubuntu partition? I'm using a lot of music/video/graphics production software.

I am trying to move a whole bunch of files from one partition on one hard drive to the same partition on another hard drive. Can I mount the same partition (same name, different drives, i.e. /data on /dev/hda1 and /data on /dev/hdb1)and copy those files? Shutdown the server, take out /dev/hda1 and boot up with the new drive and it's /data contents.

#2. LVM2 IS NOT SUPPORTED BY GPARTED. DON'T ASK.
#3. If the answer to question 1 is yes, is is easy (or possible) to do it to an lvm2 partition?
I have a drive that I am going to use for media storage, but i am not sure which filesystem type to choose. It was originally ext2 since it had Fedora on it once before, but I want something that is accessible (ie read/write) from a Windows system. I think as long as I share the mount via Samba or something I should not need to worry about the type of system it is.Before thinking, I chose fat32 until I remember the limitations. Since this drive will be mounted by Fedora, I believe I should stick with ext*, but I'm not sure which to choose.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI need to expand one logical volume which is now in 99% utilization. The volume group only have 5GB and they need 25GB more so that I can add 30GB. The disks will be coming from SAN Storage. If the SAN Admin can successfully add the disks to the server and I can see it, should I still partition it and change the type to Linux LVM?
I have tried just doing a pvcreate without partitioning and do a vgextend and it works without actually partitioning the disks. But when I do "fdisk -l", it actually shows that the disk don't have partition.
Whether I need to partition the drive to 8e (Linux LVM) before doing? Which one is better? Below are my steps and please let me know if this the correct one.
Here's my steps:
1.) dmesg | grep sd (to check the newly added disks)
2.) fdisk /dev/sdx (create primary partition and assign Linux LVM to type)
3.) pvcreate /dev/sdx
4.) vgextend VolumeName /dev/sdx
5.) lvextend -L+30G Volume01 /dev/Volume01/lv01
6.) umount /dev/Volume01/lv01
7.) resize2fs /dev/Volume01/lv01
8.) mount /dev/Volume01/lv01 /lv01
9.) df -h (check if resized successfully)

The problem is that when I open up nautilus and click the Computer icon in the toolbar (which gives the fake computer:/// address) I see two items referring to my Storage partition:
* Storage (which appears to be of "unknown type" in the properties).
* 500 GB Hard Disk: Storage (which is the one that works).
I am trying to do the cluster storage with the Rock Cluster storage operating system . I have install the rock cluster on the main server . and I want to connect the client with the PXE boot . when I starting the client then it boot from the PXE boot into the mode of compute node. but it ask the where is to be stored the I have give the path..then server says that not able to find the directory path.
Steps:-
1) insert-ethers
2) client is started with the PXE boot.
3) it detects the dhcp .
4) At last it demand where is to be started by cd-rom, harddisk ,nfs etc.
then I started with the nfs and I have given the lanIp of server.and server is detecting the client but client is not finding the filesystem directory. into export partition directory but it is not taking path.
PATH:-
/export/rock/install it is not finding this path then it is not able to start the o/s from PXE boot..Is there any solution and manual of rock or anyother solution then u can reply to me...
Installed Ubuntu 9.1 karmic koala in a dualboot with Windows XP to remove a virus from the windows drive. I think the virus was found but somehow I have done something to cause a invalid drive error message at startup. I read that gparted may by a way to fix this, but I don't want to do anymore damage.

My parents bought a new hard drive for a laptop that I've owned for several years. It's much larger than the current one, so I plan on splitting it up to dual boot it with Ubuntu.I have no problem with partitioning a drive (I always keep a LiveCD handy), but my question is this: how can I go about moving the existing partition to the new drive? This is a laptop, so I can't simply plug the new drive into another slot.
Also, even if I manage to move it, will Windows still work on the new drive in a larger partition? I've had this laptop for quite a while, and I've lost the recovery discs that came with it a long time ago. I also have a lot of software without CDs to reinstall them with. This makes not reinstalling Windows a high priority.
When starting up my dell mini 9 it will freeze at the loading screen and about 2 min later it will say that the there is basically no operating system. Someone on here told me to reinstall Ubuntu so installed it to a USB and while trying to install I would get stuck on the partition page. There would be no option to select a partition or even to create one. So i quit the installation and manually created a partition through gparted.
Im not sure if I am mounting the partitions in the right place but I need help and can someone let me know what type of partitions do i need, where to mount them. I dont know exactly what i did but i would run 2 USB's with Ubuntu on them at one time. One will run the Ubuntu and one I was trying to create a partition.
