Ubuntu 10.10 (gnome). I currently have dual display using a nvidia gtx 260, but I have put in an ATI RAGE 128 PRO PCI card ( model # VAR128P-32P ).
My guess would be the xorg.conf file, But I have no clue what to put in it.

I have a double boot configuration with ubuntu 10.04 and windows xp when i start ubuntu the 'ubuntu' screen comes but the login screen does not appear. i tried to open ubuntu in recovery mode but it said:
I've tried using older kernels also just for info: my home and usr directories are in separate partitions & i've named my ubuntu partition as 'ubt'. i edited grub.conf file before this happened ( to comment out older kernel boot options) but grub is working porperly and i am able to boot into windows without any issues.

My ubuntu isn't starting up today. I can't remember anything unusual happening last night, not even a standard system update.
It presents me with the Grub loader, screen goes blank, and that's as much as I get. I have gone into a recovery mode through the grub loader, and that gives me a bit more info, but I don't know what to do with the information it is giving me.
It says: Gave up waiting for root device. common problems (etc) ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/<long name> does not exist. Dropping to a shell.
It is right - the /dev/disk/.... does not exist. A different file with an equally long filename does exist

When I start the Movie Player (Applications -> Sound and Video -> Movie Player), the screen blanks out and then restores again before playing the movie.
I don't see this issue with RhythmBox though. Only the Totem Movie Player seems to be experiencing this issue.

I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04. I didn't really find the Unity interface useable (I didn't like Ubuntu Netbook Edition for this exact reason) and am running it in Classic mode. I have a Acer Aspire One D255, Intel Atom processor, etc. When I start the computer up from a hibernate, the screen goes black with a set of random colored pixels at the top corner. I have a mouse but nothing else.

I have a strange problem with some applications in 10.10. This applies so far to virtualbox and skype. When I try to start them, nothing happens. Virtualbox just flickers the edge of the screen. Virtualbox has worked before, and i'm reluctant to delete it as I have another machine installed. Skype has never worked, and even when I have reinstalled, the same happens.

I do quite allot of screen tutorials, and i am always useing this FMMPEG script.ffmpeg -f alsa -ac 2 -i pulse -f x11grab -r 30 -s $(xwininfo -root | grep 'geometry' | awk '{print $2;}') -i :0.0 -acodec pcm_s16le -vcodec libx264 -vpre lossless_ultrafast -threads 0 -y video2.avi.I was just wondering if someone knows a script that i could put in a text file, make it executable and it would ask me what i wanted to save the file as, and it would put that text where "Video2.avi" goes, and then it would just run the normal FFMPEG script.

I have a java service that needs to be run in a gnu screen session so that I can -r into it to access it's interactive shell. I would like this to run at start-up. More importantly, it crashes frequently so I need the service to restart itself when it crashes. How do I go about doing this myself? My previous experience with shell scripting amounts to putting ./service in a file and marking it executable. This will be running on a FreeBSD server, but I might put it on a Linux server soon also. So any caveats on the differences would be useful information.

Slack 13.0 X sometimes fails to start after boot about 50% of the time. linux says "starting X11 session" then I get a blank screen with a flashing cursor and absolutely nothing else. I can <ctrl>-<alt>-<F7> and get a text prompt, log in, and startx from a command prompt. After that, I can reboot once or twice and still get a graphic login, but will soon revert to the dumped condition. I have reinstalled X and KDE twice now as well as deleting my .kde folder. This condition started when I inadvertently ran out of disk space on my /home drive. Since then I have migrated /home to a larger drive and watch it's disk space very carefully.

I have just installed Fedora11 on my machine - the installation failed to start the x server so I had to install with the textbased installer. When the installation completes, I boot up and first I update Fedora with "yum update". Then I install a nvidia driver with "yum install kmod-nvidia". Then I run nvidia-xconfig to make a config file. But when I try to run "X", I just get a blank screen. I can run system-config-display fine, and setup my resolution etc. The log doesnt seem to give me any errors.I have two Geforce Fx3500 card in the machine.

I want to install Suse 11.3 on a Proliant server. I thought not to take the obvious Windows CD's (little sorrow now) and try Linux. I used an USB Live CD to start. I tried all the startup options like apci=off and so on. Also tried lower resolutions and VESA. Still no luck. After running and starting (seeing in ALT-F4 the Kernel loading), all ALT screens get a blank black screen. Only option is to restart, while then SUSE is displaying it is going down.

i just found out (late i know) that the knew skype beta 2 now comes with the awesome screen-sharing feature that skype for mac and skype for win comes with..so i uninstalled the old skype and installed the new beta version with lightning quickness to try that out.. (and show off my compiz effects to all my friends lol!!)anyway, it seems to only work halfway for me. sharing the FULL screen will cause my skype app to crash and close instantly. but sharing a screen selection works just fine... even though i can't resize the screen selecting area.. but it's not that big a deal for me.

Fedora 12 randomly crashes after a fresh install.Everything is left at its default during the installation except I install KDE and not Gnome. When I try to boot I hit esc at the splash screen to see where it hangs, but it never hangs at the same spot twice. Sometimes it hangs and sometimes it restarts. Its crashed everywhere from starting udev to the login screen.
I've been using kubuntu for the past year because I have the same problem with F10 and F11.
I dual boot with Windows 7 for games.

Once I select Ubuntu 9.10 from Grub, it shows the logo, the logo disappears, a jet black screen shows with 2 horizontal white dashes appear at the top.
I recently uninstalled Firefox 3.6 pre using synaptic to go with the stable Firefox 3.6 installed with the PPA repository that was given in the Ubuntu wiki. It installed and ran fine but when I rebooted, ubuntu wouldn't start.
I went into recovery mode a few times, tried to fix any broken packages and when it said it was fixed, I tried rebooting and the same error occurred. I also tried to use dpkg-reconfigure for the xserver-xorg and then ran startx but x didn't load properly. Some more debugging and a few driver errors came up involving intel so I installed a package which fixed that.
Ran the dpkg-reconfigure again and ran startx. This time x loaded but it was a jet black screen and I had to hold ctrl + alt and hit a few F keys to get back to the prompt.
I understand this could be a xulrunner error so I tried reinstalling xulrunner-1.9.1. I also rolled back my repositories to get the Firefox 3.5 branch and I installed the original Firefox 3.5, ran firefox --version to make sure and I finally have that back installed.
I tried rebooting and running the OS normally, but again it failed at the same point. What exactly should I do next? Yes, I could reinstall but it's such a small problem with maybe 1 or 2 broken packages, is there anyway I can save my current ubuntu system (as I have made countless configuration changes months ago and I do not want to do it again)?

I have a generic PC (VIA chipset, AMD 1.8 GHz, old NVIDIA card, etc) running Ubuntu 10.04 side-by-side with a Windows XP box. The Ubuntu box can see and mount some of the Windows disks via SAMBA. Recently, I had a little hardware problems with the Ubuntu box but cleaned the fans and reseated cards and things seemed better. Today the Ubuntu box rebooted and when it came back up I could log in OK but then the X11 GUI locked up in a continuous "Starting File Manager" loop. If I click anything the taskbars go away showing only a blank wallpaper screen then the taskbars return but but will recycle if I click on anything. I can reboot in recovery mode and have applied all updates from that screen. The underlying Linux seems to be fine. I can CTRL+ALT+F1 and get a terminal screen that works fine.

I installed OS11.4 on my old laptop, Compaq Armada E500., 512MB RAM, ATI Rage Mobility. During installation I chose "minimal server" and added some development packages, lxde and a little more. I chose to start in runlevel 3 which is full networking without X. Still, when computer is booted it tries to start Xorg which doesn't work because of some problem w driver. The start-up seems to stop there, it never loads completely - seems most things in runlevel 3 are not started (see below) I can manually login on laptop and fix it - but never permanently, same thing again after reboot.
I have checked /etc/inittab & yast - both states default runlevel is 3. I have checked services to be started both directly, browsing directory /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/, and with YaST, it is very clear X should not load during boot. But, as said, it does.. I don't really care about the driver problem right now, I can fix that later when I have more time. So how do I stop X from getting started automatically?
More info, if needed: The installation also stopped with message on tty1 "Starting YaST2" and tty8 showing errors with graphics driver (mach64). The system seemed to be installed though, so I simply rebooted (issuing "reboot" from tty2).
[Code]....
I'm not completely sure where it stops, network is configured but keyboard is wrong and mysql & everything after is not started, so somewhere between S02network and S06kbd. I'm going to use it as a server for testing purposes so no X is actually needed - however I do want to have X & lxde installed just in case, my Internet connection at home is terribly slow so I need most things I might need in the future installed today.

This obnoxious bar has just appeared in Smplayer at the top of the screen. It stays there even when I go full screen. Now full screen isn't full screen and there are black edges on both sides of the screen. I have not be able to figure out how to hide it. I do not need or want this onscreen display. How can I configure Smplayer to make this go away? How can I get my 16:9 full screen aspect ratio back? I have done nothing to mplayer or smplayer as far as editing any or changing any configuration files. I tried several videos and it displays on all of them. It was not there last time I used Smplayer.

When I first boot up my machine and log in or close my laptop lid then open it, after about half a minute in gnome my entire desktop begins to lag. It lasts for a few minutes then it's completely gone and doesn't happen again until next boot or if I close then reopen my laptop. It's a really bad lag too, where the mouse is practically umovable and I can't click anything.
I have an hp g60-549dx with a duel core 64-bit pentium 4 and an intel gma 4500M.
My Kernel is 2.6.31.6-162.fc12.x86_64
Compiz is enabled and after that lag everything runs flawlessly.
So far I've tried making an xorg.conf and changing the AccelMethod as recommended here, [url], but it didn't work.

I just installed debian 8.0.0..I installed it without "desktop-environment" during tasksel, but instead installed it with "sudo apt-get install xorg gnome-core" atferwards.I want x-win to be present but I do not want it to start during boot.
Adding "GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=text" to the grub config used to work but for this new debian it does not change anything. Yes, I did do update-grub2 after editing the grub file, and I also confirmed in /var/log/messages that "text" is present with the kernel command. "sudo update-rc.d gdm3 remove" also has no effect, what I do gnome starts at boot time.

I have an installation of F12 where I used VMM to create and run four virtual machines.
If I set the machines to start at boot in VMM, but set my host to not boot all the way into X, the VMs don't boot.
IS that suppoed to be that way? Does VMM's auto-boot of VMs depend on some X or GNOME stage?
If so, what's the best way to fire up the VMs such that it doesn't conflict with any subsequent use of startx? (Don't eant to end up with double the machines just because I had a need to fire up X on the host.)

I just upgrade to KDE 4.3 and it is great release, one problem I have found with it is that The Strigi Desktop File Indexer does not want to start. The error that I get is "Strigi service failed to initialize, most likely due to an installation problem.", does anyone here know if Strigi logs things like this and were?
