Hardware :: Quantum Lto 4 Hh - Not Compatible With RHEL5

Aug 3, 2010

Has anyone experience of using Quantum lto 4 hh on linux? The Quantum site says it is not compatible with RHEL5 but I have downloaded a module mt-st and this seems to communicate well with the tape drive ... does this mean that the not-compatible only extends to native RHEL-5 not with the added module mt-st which adds compatibility with scsi tape drives?

If quantum will work directly on RHEL 5 then one can get Amanda up and running otherwise those lovely people at proprietary backup vendors will offer me compatibility at say 5k for commVault etc or 1k for Symantec. Also they require I find a windows server to install the base modules.

Software :: Compiling Quantum LTFS On Debian

Jul 27, 2011

I am trying to compile Quantum's LTFS software from source on a Debian Squeeze system.

Software here:

[URL]

They provide binaries for Red Hat and SUSE, but not Debian, thus I need to compile myself.

I have installed the dependancies:

> sudo apt-get install libicu-dev libfuse-dev uuid uuid-dev libxml++2.6-2 libxml++2.6-dev

./configure completes without error.

However, when attempting to "make" I see the following:

sudo make
make all-recursive
make[1]: Entering directory `/home/station/Downloads/qtmltfs-1.2.0'
Making all in messages

[Code].....

Sitting at Heathrow airport with 30 minutes to spare, I decided to have another look at this. I have with me a 3 year old netbook running Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx NBR. Not exactly the machine I want to connect up to a Quantum LTO5 tape drive, but nonetheless, something I thought I could at least trouble shoot on.

Anyway, the software compiled without error on this machine.

This leads me to the conclusion that there is some library or path linking problem with vanilla Debian. I guess I will be installing Ubuntu on the workstation when I'm back in the office.

I can see and access the library:

Data Transfer Element 0:Full (Storage Element 1 Loaded):VolumeTag = NGL930L3

But when I try running tar -tzf /dev/changer or tar -tvf /dev/changer I just get a flashing cursor and the drive sits at IDLE.

General :: Break - UPS Compatible With Box?

Jun 7, 2010

I'm buying this unit from deal extreme: it's a bitorrent downloader, with NAS capability. I'm interested in sharing an external HD in it, with media and backup purposes. I'm afraid of energy problems (don't know if this is the correct term), corrupting my mounted drives (like after a storm), so I thought about buying an UPS that sends a "signal" to my Linux box, and a script in my Linux box would unmout everything to avoid problems.Do this "UPS signal" feature exists? Do you have model suggestions?

I am looking for a new smart one. Although I am a long time Blackberry user, I am open to switch to droid or Iphone. One frustration I had with Blackberry was that I was not able synch my phone with my home computer (ubuntu) when I checked two years ago. Since then I have been using a windows machine to synch.

Now I am looking for a new phone and I would like it to work with my Ubuntu computer. I am wondering what other Ubuntu users experience are on this issue.

Security :: Generating A Key Compatible With PGP?

Jun 24, 2010

I am currently using [URL] to send and receive faxes at work. I need the faxes to be encrypted. They offer public key encryption with PGP 9.8.2 They just need my public key to be compatible with their PGP version. I found a few statements at the GPG site, which may not be true for newer versions of gpg: PGP, Inc. refuses to accept Elgamal keys of type 20 even for encryption. They only support type 16.PGP 5.x does not accept v4 signatures for data material but OpenPGP requests generation of v4 signatures for all kind of data, that's why GnuPG defaults to them. By default, GnuPG encrypts your secret key using the Blowfish symmetric algorithm. Older PGPs will only understand 3DES, CAST5, or IDEA symmetric algorithms. PGP doesn't do Elgamal signing keys at all, so they are not usable with any version. I attempt to avoid using trial and error here, because an incompatible key may provoke loss of crucial information. It is difficult to estimate how long it would take them/me to find out that the key provided was not compatible; but probably it would entail a significant loss for the business.

Slackware :: Vim Not Compatible With Konsole?

Sep 29, 2010

Nobody else seems to be reporting this, so I guess it's down to my setup in some way, but when I run vim from a konsole window under KDE 4.3.3, I find that the konsole screen messes up during the session (feels as if it is writing with background colour on the background or something) and even when you leave vim by typing the right exit commands, display remains upset (most often confined to leftmost 20-30 columns). Konsole "clear and reset" does not help, I have to close the session and start a new instance.

Maybe connected to the konsole settings I use which are "black on light yellow"?

Should I have something in by .vimrc or konsole configuration to fix this ?

I realize that gcc 3.3.3 is not the default compiler on RHEL5. But we have 10 million lines of code that we dont want to experiment with 4.1.2 . How can we get a pre-built binary of gcc 3.3.3 for RHEL5 ? As a backup I guess we pull down the source for 3.3.3 from the gnu site and build that using the 4.1.2 compiler .

OpenSUSE Install :: Compatible With NTFS?

Mar 14, 2010

I plan to install OpenSUSE as my main operating system. However, before proceeding with the installation I want to clarify one problem I think I might face. My disc is partitioned into 2 parts- a) C: being my primary partition and b) D: containing all my important files. Both the partitions are NTFS.

I am planning to format C: and install OpenSUSE on it. Will I be able to use the D: partition in OpenSUSE just as I use it in Windows or would I have to format D: too? I do not want to format D: drive. Would I have to make any special configurations before or after installing OpenSUSE to use D: drive?

Ubuntu :: Compatible AMD-64 PCI Or USB Wifi Adapter

Dec 7, 2010

Having moved my computers into a "new" office in my house, I have no network cables. Had fun times trying to run a network cable, ultimately stopped due to unknown block in the vertical wall and fear of drilling through something important. I have strong WIFI signal to this room.

I tried plugging in my Netgear WPN111, didn't work. Works on my Win7 box, and I need one on that anyway, so I'd prefer to get another wifi card, be it a PCI, PCIE, or USB dongle. I would prefer the USB dongle since I could then use it elsewhere if need be. I've installed Ubuntu 10.10 64-bit. The cpu is an Intel quad-core 920, with 8GB ram.

Installation :: PHP Compatible With Systems Or Need Configuration?

Nov 10, 2010

I have stumbled up around many problems in the past weeks, and recently my windows server is just giving me big pain with the DNS. Instead of having constant trouble trying to fix those problems that doesn't stop coming. I am trying to find the opportunity to transfer my settings onto a Linux setup. My needs are pretty simple, I am currently creating a simple website for a school project that I need to finish fairly soon. I also need to attach it to a forum, most likely phpBB3.

My first question would be: Which OS should I opt for. CentOS, SUSE, Ubuntu Server? Should I add in features into that to make my transfer simpler? Secondly, what would be the website manager, Apache or IIS? Is php easily compatible with the systems, or will it need configuration somehow? Finally, can it be possible for me to install programs that are exclusive to windows, such as Dreamweaver? I got a small knowledge on Linux systems, but I am completely new to the server side!
