Hardware :: Completely Erase Hard Disk (DRDY ERR UNC)?

I had a laptop with a partition for windows and linux, but I decided to thorw away the partition for windows and add it to the linux partition. So i read this was possible with gparted, burned a cd, deleted the windows partition and resized the linux partition to the full space.
GParted did it work, but when it was nearly finished it said it failed. When I rebooted the laptop, it gave me hard disk errors of the type: DRDY ERR UNC. I couldn't solve the problem, so I wanted to clear the whole disk. I have been trying to accomplish this with the Debian boot CD, but it says it can't do that anymore. How to completely erase my hard disk?

I would like to completely erase my hard drive and install Ubuntu 10.04 on again fresh. I think some files have become corrupted from a power cut that I had last night whilst the laptop was plugged in (and turned on).
I'm not bothered about completely wiping the hard drive since there are no important files on it (at most there are just a lot of packages I downloaded from the repro...) I don't have any Windows installations either - it's just a simple; wipe the hard drive and reinstall all over again case

During the ubuntu installation I am most afraid by this question. If I select to "erase and use entire hard disk "
what will happen. For example I have 20 gb Hard disk divided in 4 logical drives 5 GB each. Whole 20 gb data will be arased, or Data on one of those 4 drives will be erased.

What will be an easy and reliable way to completely erase a hard drive excluding with a hammer.I have several 40G IDE Hard drives, running Linux or Windows, for disposal. A friend of mine needs them. For several days I have tried to create a new raid5 array, after accidently blowing up the old one.But it seems that the raid data was burned into the harddisks ineradicably. I keep seeing the raid data that was used for the old array. I have tried everything to remove the old data, even installed a new distro but still I see the old data.My last hope is to erase the disks with a lowlevel tool to make a clean start.

I got 8.10 to load and run on my set up, got disc burned ready for fresh install but won't boot from disc? erasing the drive is no issue so no problem there, i at least have a taste for this now and are liking it.is there a way to erase the hard drive, to get the disc to boot so i can install a supported version? i have kubuntu 11.04 ready to go.from playing on this kde version am really impressed and like this.smokes windows all to pieces, though i like my games for window too

After installation, when starting to boot, I have several choices showing:
1)Ubuntu, w/ Linux 2.6.38-8-generic pae
2)Ubuntu, w/ Linux 2.6.38-8-generic pae (Recovery Mode)
3)Memory test (memtest 86+)
4)Memory test (memtest 86+, serial console 115200
5)Windows Server 2003 For Small Business Server (on /dev/sdd1)
I used #1 and I only have a blank screen.
I used #2 and I went into recovery mode, but I keep getting the error message: "No root
file system is defined. Please correct this from the partition.
I just want to erase all of numbers 1 to 5 and start clean. what should I do?

after installing Ubuntu on one WD 500 GB hard disk and after making mistake and pasting wrong code into Terminal:my OTHER WD 500 GB hard disk that was also in the system (I guess it was "hd1") - died.The problem must be, I guess, I typed wrong code: "hd1,1" instead of "hd0,0".)500 GB (NTFS) of data was on that other (non-Ubuntu) hard disk, and now I can not access it anymore. While booting, system gives "Hard Disk Error" warning and stops.One again: I installed Ubuntu od one hard disk and at the end of instalation I pasted wrong code for GRUB, giving address of another hard disk. I bought a new 2.5 inch SATA laptop hard drive and mounted it in an external enclosure for use as an external backup drive. I had a whale of a time getting it formatted (ref post), but finally did by putting the bare drive into a laptop and used Ubuntu to partition and format as part of installing. Then I remounted the bare drive back into the enclosure and sure enough now I can now see the drive.
So now I want to erase the files from the backup drive. Problem is, Ubuntu won't let me delete or add any files. In Nautlis, if I select the files and "right click", Move to Trash is grayed out. If I press the delete button, nothing happens. If I try to copy a new file to the backup drive it says "permission denied". If I go into the Properties .> Permissions for the drive everything is grayed out so I can't change the permission. It also says "You are not the owner so you cannot change permissions".

I have a sata 320 gb with mandriva linux 2009.1 on it.And it is what curently atached to my cpu. It is shown as 'sda' in the partition table.I also have another 40gb hard disk with windows xp installed on it.It is shown as 'hda' in the partition table . Now what i want to do is attach this 40gb hard disk to my pc and configure grub on my 320gb hard disk('sda') so as to boot windows xp(which is residing on the second hard disk,'hda')Can anyone tell me if what im doing is feasible or not? If it is feasible,can anyone suggest me how to get it working. I know i just need to add 2-3 lines to my grub.conf, but dont know what exactly i need to write.

I had a dual boot (windows 7 + debian), both of them installed in my internal hard disk, with the GRUB in it. I have recently installed a second linux distro (mint), but I put it in an external hard disk. Now the GRUB allows me to boot any of the three operating systems, but I need the external disk to do it. It seems that after the mint installation the GRUB is now working from the external disk (if the external disk is not connected, the machine does not boot.) �Is there a way to change the location of the GRUB, to the internal hard disk of my laptop?

I was using Terminal and browsing a directory in my home folder. My "home" directory is located on "/dev/sdb1". When in Terminal I typed "ls" in one of my directories and the output was garbage. The output didn't show the files in the directory. I think it said something like, "input/output error". Unfortunately, I didn't write the exact error down. If you have a hard disk image (including partition table, multiple partitions,...), is it possible to let Linux treat it as a regular hard disk?
By "regular hard disk" I mean I would like to have the image show up as, for instance, /dev/hdx and its partitions as /dev/hdx1,...
(I know I can mount one of the partitions in the image using "mount -o loop,offset=x ..." but I don't really like this option.)

I have an SD-VIA-1A2S PCI card with 2 sata ports (and one ATA-133 that isn't used). Two new Western Digital Caviar Green drives (WD10EARS 1TB) throw repeated errors in kern.log (removed date/time/host info for brevity):

I'm using Ubuntu 9.04 - 2.6.28-18-generic, though I have tried live cds of Ubuntu 9.10, Fedora 12 and OpenSUSE 11.2 - all running various 2.6.31 kernels - and all received the same error.Based on testing these drives and this card in two other machines and combos of connecting the drives directly to the motherboard or the add-in card, I'm relatively convinced that it's the VIA chipset that is the problem.Another computer that also has an onboard VIA SATA chipset (like the add-in card) produces the same errors when the drives are directly on that motherboard. I have been able to verify that the drives are perfectly good, and I tried everything I can think of in terms of swapping cables, psu isn't overloaded, etc.
The error happens on boot once or twice, after using fdisk on the drive once or twice, and constantly when attempting to sync a new mdadm raid 1 array created on the two drives.I'm completely open to buying a new PCI add-in card if someone can recommend one with 2 internal sata ports that works well in Debian/Ubuntu.

So in essence, my drive has become a cluster of random partitions, multiple Ubuntu installs, and random windows systems. It's gotten so bad that on my entire 250gb system my main Ubuntu install only gets 40gb of memory. Could anybody give me a step by step guide to do the following:
1. Completely wipe and departition my disc.
2. Install Ubuntu from a backup .tar file
3. Install a 40gb windows 7 partition

I dual boot with Ubuntu and Windows, and I just about an hour ago upgraded to 9.10 from Jaunty. After I restarted my computer two versions of Ubuntu could be booted, Windows was not on the GRUB menu. I am new to programming, and am completely clueless as to why this happened, and how I can fix this.

I got a laptop from a friend. For some reason, it loaded the grub off of an SD card (He was running Xubuntu), so I tried re-installing Ubuntu itself on the hard-drive, completely ignoring the SD card. It wont work. The guy who sold the laptop to me took a look at it, and he's alright with Linux, but he can't figure out what's wrong with it. I tried adding my own partition tables, and they look something like this:
sda1 / 20G
sda2 /home 130G
sda3 SWAP 10G
I know it's more swap than I should have, but I plan on upgrading the RAM.Anyways, we're both completely lost. I think we want it to load a grub menu at this point because one isn't loading.

I recently bought 320 GB Trancend external hard disk and working fine days back.Earlier i could copy from and to the hard disk with out any issue. I dont know what happened after that now i am not able to write any files in to the external hard disk. This is not NTFS formatted device. here is some of the out put from terminal.

I created a thread about a problem a I had with my hard disk clicking whilst idle little while ago and I may now have stumbled upon a possible solution. The strange thing with the problem is that Ubuntu/Kubuntu didn't cause this problem but Opensuse 11.2 does.
I installed Fedora 13 to have a glimpse of what all the fuss was about and noticed that I had the same problem (hard disk clicking whilst idle ~ every 20 secs or so). Now there's a wiki on this subject and a few bug reports: [url]
Problem Description
Some ATA harddrives perform very frequent head unloads under Linux significantly shortening their lifespans. Root cause
The inactivity timer for head unload is configured too aggressively either via ATA APM (Advanced Power Management) feature or other non-standard means. Such aggressive settings are very fragile to changes in IO pattern and under Linux many such drives unload their heads only to re-load them shortly. Note that this relentless unloading/reloading cycle can also be triggered under Windows by installing programs which can alter the IO pattern (e.g. certain vaccine programs which runs in background).
Now two of the listed models with this problem are basically identical to my model (Dell Inspiron 1520) and basically share the same hardware: Dell Vostro 1500 and XPS 1520.
The workaround listed is to:
set APM to 254
Furthermore, there is a script: Storage-Fixup which can also be downloaded from opensuse software search. Indeed there is a report of this for a Vostro 1500: Gmane Loom
