Hardware :: Very Quiet Sound In Ubnutu 9.04?
Apr 2, 2009
I posted a couple days ago about how all my hardware was malfunctioning. I upgraded to Ubuntu 9.04, and all my sound and video issues were solved.Just a minor little bug though.I googled it for a while, can't find anything relevant.I was wondering: All the sounds played are really quiet, even at max volume. I like to have my music a little loud, so how do I get it to play louder?

Thats the problem my sound is insanely quiet. Im running Ubuntu 9.10 right now dual booted with Win 7. Win 7 has perfect sound but it doesnt work right in ubunt. I ran
Code:
aplay -l
in the terminal and it detected my ATI card. Ive gone into alsa mixer and all the proper channels are on. The only time i can really hear sound is when I plug in my uber sensitive earphone and turn the volume up past 100. Does anybody have any ideas what the problem could be?

other than windows.I've tried OpenSuze. Do to limited user knowledge on my part I opted to use Ubuntu after talking to other users of Ubuntu. Now out of 3 window OS's & 3 Linux distros I can only run Ubuntu live CD and install Ubuntu 9.1 (but not boot from).I was originality attempting a Dual boot with Vista but have aborted that cause. Ubuntu hangs at a flashing courser after the system boots. I have not seen how Ubuntu boot manager is suppose to look like other than this blue screen and from the live CD.
I have installed, reinstalled using both default and user partitioning. The disk utility and gpart both confirm the MBR is in the partition table. To take it a step futher I was able to down load a script from Sorceforge confirming the MBR is installed.I've also ran the Segate "Tools For Dos" being the drives are Seagate, it hangs at start up displaying an error code Invalid Opcode. This code also appears on the other drive I've attempted to try to use as boot drive.I now have two drive that I'm unable to boot an OS from the present 500G and 1TB (1TB presently is disconnected). Here is the boot "Inf Script Summary" of my present installation attempt. Just a thought, in viewing an other post a usb drive was going to be Zero written, using code, would this be a way for me to correct my issues from the live CD, if so I would need some coaching. I've managed to generate good size bag of worms! Boot Info Script 0.55 dated February 15th, 2010 =========================== Boot Info Summary: ============================== => Grub 2 is installed in the MBR of /dev/sda and looks on the same drive in partition #1 for /boot/grub.

I have a new computer, which I installed Ubuntu on [version 10]. It is just a simple computer that is used for internet and playing music, but there is a fan inside that makes quite some noise. I want to make the PC more quiet, without installing a new fan, however, I couldn't find any jumpers, or bios settings to down clock my pc [that was my first idea, downclocking the PC]. Do you have any ideas?
My specs: Compaq pressario 2.9 GHz, intel pentium 4 [system monitor says there are 2 cpu's, but I doubt it :], if there are 2 cpu's, it would be 2 cpu's of 2.93 GHz ] a 600 watt power supply a case fan mobo: RC410-m So how to get the PC more silent? [PS, ubuntu boots with NOAPIC]

I have just installed ubuntu on top of my windows 7 installation, on its own partition. From the beginning i could not install from the cd since it just froze every time i pressed install from the installation window. I got the commandline for the command to show itself, and noticed a command called quiet splash in the end. Wanting to see if it was hiding any errormessages i deleted it and ran the installer again. Now the installer did not crash and instead installed with no complications. In grub, when i try to boot windows 7 there is no problem. When i try to boot ubuntu it crashes. Ive left my computer for 30 minutes and still nothing has happened. However when i press e to see the boot command, delete quiet splash and press ctrl-x for boot, ubuntu starts with no problems.

I'm running kind of a mix between Wheezy and the occasional package from Sid. I've got the 2.6.32 kernel installed, as well as 2.6.38 and 2.6.39.
With the first kernel (2.6.32), my sound is normal, everything works fine. With the latter two, even using the same driver, my sound is quiet even with the volume up all the way, not to mention that somehow the available volume controls change along with this update. I was wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar, and if they managed to fix it or work around it without just booting into the older kernel?

if there was a way to change the background pictures for the suse grub? I like the "pretty" grub look with the startup options box for boot parameters, just wondering how to change the background pic. Also, I was wondering if there was a way to change the look of splash, other then verbose quiet showtps? I like the verbose with the picture background, nice touch, just wondering how to get that at default&how to change background, colors.

I originally installed Ubuntu 10.10 in my computer, but as it is an older machine, it was too heavy for it. Threfore, I installed the xubuntu-desktop package available at the Synaptics package manager. From then on, my system began behaving pretty much like a pure Xubuntu 10.10, or at least as I think it should be. I still have the option of selecting between a Xubuntu and an Ubuntu session at start up.
That said, there is a little thing that is annoying me. While the sound in Ubuntu sessions are just fine, it is too quiet in Xubuntu ones. Let me elaborate: I think that the maximum volume is the same, but while Ubuntu's volume curve is a straight born from an arithmetic progression one, Xubuntu's sounds like a curve born from a geometric progression, that is, it is too quiet at lower levels, reaching its maximum very abruptly. I control sound using volume keys, and the computer reaches maximum volume in 20 pressess. While in a quiet place I can reach a nice, audible volume at 3 pressess in Ubuntu, in Xubuntu I only start hearing something at the 10th or 11th press. Is there any way to make Xubuntu's volume control behave like Ubuntu's?

I'm currently trying to get to the root of an problem on startup; unfortunatly when booting after the first couple of messages when booting without quiet and with nosplash in the grub menu I still end up with the nice blue background and the slowly filling bubble... I'd like to go back to the old, boring, messy, but much loved and now much missed (least by me) text boot screen where I can see wtf my system is doing and where its hanging during the boot process.
(I know the cause of the hang now but still want to go back to the old fashioned noisy boot environment - not a fan of the windows style silent boot... I like to know what's going on and that my PC hasn't decided to join the French and go on strike, though wouldn't blame my poor netbook if it has, hammering the bleeper doing random number analysis - not something an atom 270 is designed for)

I was just using the mic and watched it stop working suddenly. I was in the middle of a skype test call when the graphical mixer level died down to zero in the middle of the call. When the test call was played back, the first part sounded fine then the sound got lower until it became inaudible. Since then I can't get any sound from my mic in skype.
Also, the audio input level graphically shown in Sound Preferences shows no fluctuations in sound as it used to before. The input device is enabled. I tried using Sound Recorder to record some sound clips and that worked fine. So the mic is working but Sound Preferences and Skype seem to have the mic level really low. I'm not sure what else to think considering it was working perfectly a few minutes ago. I've tried restarting, but that didn't fix it either.

After installing an external sound card, Im having some weird issues. The cards chipset is fully supported by suse, (CM8738) so I dont think thats the problem. Besides, I'm getting sound, but not in some applications. The system's sounds work just fine (login, logout themes) amarok plays without any problems, kaffeine, mplayer they all work flawlessly, in fact I can see the difference in quality between the onboard sound and my new card. However, no web browser is able to play any sound at all, firefox, opera or chrome, nothing, zip. Plus, vlc cant reproduce sound either, nor can smplayer.
I've tried switching channels on and off(muting)in kmixer and in alsamixer, on the console, with no results. I disabled the onboard audio on the bios before installing the new card, however my ati video card has integrated sound, which I cant disable.... I used to get this exact same problem randomly with the onboard sound, but I just had to go to kmixer and turn up the "pcm" channel volume, which was set to 0, and I had sound again on my browser. However this card's pcm channel is at max and turning it up or down affects the whole systems volume, not just the browser's. Is it better to just reinstall the sound system, if so how could I do that.

I have been using Ubuntu as my main OS on my desktops for a couple of years now. Started off with a HP with a Creative Labs XiFi soundcard, but am now using a Dell with a Creative Labs Audigy. Sound worked perfectly on the Dell since a clean install (about 7 months ago). I turned it on a week or so ago, and no sound! Even the little sound indicator in the notification area has gone.

After installing I was not able to get many of the audio programmes to work. After some reading, I realised that this was probably due to jack not starting.
I was unable to get jack to start normally but have been able to get it started with the playback only option selected. Programmes that use jack now work, however there is no sound once jack has been started. The sound does work in other programs when jack is not started. Strangely, I only have to open qjackctl for the sound to stop, and jack is not even started. Initially I thought these problems were due to my sound card not being supported, but I believe that alsa support was added for the via 1708 codec at some point. I found that support had been added in a document showing the changes between alsa versions; however I cannot find the exact model listed as a supported sound card on the alsa site.
I believe that altering jack settings could fix the problem, as i have been able to get audio to work in hydrogen by selecting plughw:0 but there is still no sound in other programs. I have tried altering many other settings but to no avail, however I do not really understand the meaning of the settings that i am adjusting.
Does anyone know what settings to adjust or know something else that might fix this problem so that sound works once jack has been started?
Also, would programmes that use jack such as audacity, hydrogen, and ardour work with pulseaudio as the main sound server if I were to install normal ubuntu - it might be worth seeing if my soundcard works with the puleaudio sound server
if this helps, here is the error message received when jack does not start when the normal duplex option is selected.
21:24:04.867 Patchbay deactivated.
21:24:04.868 Statistics reset.
21:24:04.886 ALSA connection change.
Cannot connect to server socket err = Connection refused

also, when i open alsamixer in the terminal for some reason the headphone part is greyed out, even when the sound is working before qjackctl is opened.

I installed Mangler and one of its requirements was pulse-audio. I installed pulse-audio everything worked great except i couldn't get sound out of wow if i started mangler first and vice-versa. I then found a version of Mangler that worked with alsa. So i uninstalled mangler and pulse-audio, installed mangler-alsa. Everything works great now. The problem is when i uninstalled Pulse-audio i lost all my sliders in Yast > Hardware > Sound > other > volume. The only thing that shows up is master volume > Test. My sound works great just can't adjust anything. How do i get my sliders back. I would like some advice before i screw something up. I've got a custom compiled kernel, just built on Lucid 10.04 from the kernel sources.System works fine, except for sound. When I log in as normal user and try to play a wav file using. The sound file is being played, but I hear no sound. However, when I do "sudo -s" and become root, execute the same mplayer command then I can hear the sound. My Sound preferences shows no input device and only "Dummy Output" as output device. On the generic kernel as came with the Lucid 10.04 CD, sound preferences shows different devices. The strange thing is: when I compiled my custom kernel, I changed nothing to the sound options in the kernel config file.

I have no sound, is it possible to restore the default sound drivers/settings in 10.04?It was work well before except for one issue, I couldn't get mic in for Rosetta Stone using wine.
