I have a Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 (IDE) hard drive that was used in winxp as a secondary disk.When I tried to connect it to my Ubuntu laptop via usb cable, it doesn't recognize on its' own.

I have been trying to share folders from my main PC which is running Ubuntu 10.04. I have been able to figure out Samba enough to get my a couple of folders shared, but I have been unable to share any folders which are on my external harddrive. After entering the path in my smb.conf file they appear on the network but I am unable to navigate to them. When trying to navigate to them through the network folder on the pc they are actually connected to I get an "Unable to mount location: Failed to mount windows share" dialog box. On the windows pc I am trying to share with I get, "Windows cannot acces \Josh-Desktop

it only occurs on one HD it has ext4 file system just like the other external HD I have and the disk is healthy. It does mount with no problem at my netbook using ubuntu.

Having issues while mounting my 1TB passport USB drive. When running this command....

I should mention that this was working just a few hours ago. There was a power glitch and my Ubuntu headless server lost power. I turned it on and since then, I am getting this error. I would prefer not to format via GUI .... 1st because I have data there , 2nd, because I don't want to rely on a graphical interface but being able to fix this via terminal.
Unless I am logged in as root, I am unable to mount an external device (such as a flash drive or music player) This is what I get: I can, of course, pull up a root terminal and use the mount command, but I don't want every user to have access to the root terminal, but I would like everyone to be able to mount external devices. View 9 Replies View RelatedI wanted to make a clone of my drive, so I tried the ole sudo dd if=/dev/sda1 of=/dev/sdg1 trick, but first I formatted the drive to the Ext4 format. I wish I would have understood that format a little more before I decided to format it that way. Now I can't access my drive at all. I read almost everything on the net about manually mounting it, but almost everything was in Fat, NTFS, or Ext3/2 format. I even read the Ubuntu documentation. I don't know if it's because my drive is in Ext4 format, or if I'm just not doing something right.
As you can see in the following picture, it recognizes the drive, yet I am unable to mount it. I am trying to access the 160 GB drive. I even tried to see if Windows would recognize it. No go. Today while lurking in the Ubuntu Forums I found a way to make a live .iso of my system (which I think is awesome). So now I want to reformat my drive and use it as storage once again. I think I will restore it to NTFS. I thought that the Ext4 format would work better in Linux (which I was wrong), but now I need Windows to recognize it as well, and it needs to be able to store files bigger than 4 GB (unless you have a suggestion on what to format it as).

For instance, if I have a thumb drive with the volume name of "SWORDFISH," how do I have Linux mount it at /media/SWORDFISH? I'm aware that this can be setup in FSTAB, but that requires that I know the UUID of the device beforehand and that I take the time to set each external device up in FSTAB first. That does nothing for me when I have a thumb drive that has never been plugged into my computer before.
This seems to be setup by default in Ubuntu/Kubuntu, but is not working for me with a fresh installation of Debian Squeeze and KDE4. I've spent the past 2 hours Googling for a solution and have turned up nothing. UPDATE: My results are inconsistent. Sometimes Debian mounts devices to mount points based on the volume names, and other times it gives them generic mount points (e.g. /media/usb1).

View 2 Replies View RelatedI would like to ask you how to mount audio cds in linux manually. Normally, when I insert disk into cd-rom, Gnome manages to open me a window with content of cd. Everything works ok, until I try to mount same cd through shell.
First error complaining about cd being read-only can be solved using -r arugment. But, second error wants me to specify filesystem, which I don't know of course. I heard that audio cds don't have any filesystem or something similar, but how is it possible to display it's content in Gnome?
I actually mean, I would like to be able to do same thing, but without desktop environment - only through shell.
I am trying to install some software through wine, but unfortunately the cd is not auto-mounting, is there a way I can manually mount the cd and continue installation?

I'm not too smart about HAL and UDEV and I don't want to undo the auto mount feature when X is running but still be able to manually mount and unmount as necessary; like for installing patches and packages after an install or version upgrade. It seems like there should be an entry in /etc/fstab and a directory in /mnt or /media but danged if I can find something that points the way.

Today, I fire up ol' trusty, and my slave drive doesn't show in either "Places," "System Monitor," or "Disk Usage Analyzer." It does, however, show up in BIOS and "Gparted Partition Editor." A mounting option isn't present in "Places" as it was yesterday.
If I need to manually mount it or whatever, would someone please list the steps I need to take to get my HD back?

But it doesn't auto mount with everything and disconnects whenever I suspend my computer. The only way to get it to mount is with

Did lucid change the way it uses fstab or something? Obviously writing mount -a isn't a huge concern, but it kind of destroys the point of putting it in my fstab.

Samsung have advised me that to do that I need to place the Galaxy S phone on Mass storage, whivch I can do and plug the phone USB cable to the PC and manually mount the USB.
