Ubuntu Networking :: Wireless Driver Broken After Kernel Update

Oct 1, 2010

I just upgraded the kernel on my Ubuntu laptop from 2.6.32-24-generic to 2.6.32-25-generic (using the update manager under gnome). After the update, the wireless network controller shows up as UNCLAIMED when I do lshw -C network. When I try to install the driver with the commands sudo modprobe lib80211 sudo insmod wl.ko

i get this error message: insmod: error inserting 'wl.ko': -1 Invalid module format

I have compiled the driver using the 2.6.32-24 kernel. Do I have to re-compile with the new kernel?I'm a unix user, but not a kernel hacker, so I'm wondering if I will run into problems every time I get a kernel update? Or is this problem an exception?

Ubuntu Installation :: Nvidia Driver Broken After Kernel Update / "System InstallArchive() Error" When Installing?

Jan 30, 2011

I had a working ubuntu 10.10 system two days ago with kernel 2.6.35-24. I have a gtx 460 card so I have the driver from Jockey/Additional Drivers installed.

Two days ago update manager prompted me to install 2.6.35-25. I've never had problems updating kernels so I did. I Rebooted my machine and gdm/gnome no longer starts. I always get stuck on the tty1 screen. I did some troubleshooting and figured out that my current NVidia drivers seems to be messing it up. So I booted into my older kernel (2.6.35-24) and removed my NVidia driver.

I used these steps to switch from nvidia to nouveau:
NvidiaDriverSwitching

I can now boot into my latest kernel (2.6.35-25) but now I'm having problems trying to reinstall the nvidia drivers.

jockey sometimes doesn't list any available drivers. and when it does, it gives me an "System InstallArchive() error" when trying to install.

I tried installing nvidia-current via apt-get and I get these errors:

Code:

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Pulseaudio Lirc Plugin Broken In 10.04?

May 1, 2010

The only thing I have found so far which does not work for me after upgrading to 10.04 is the ability to change the master volume via LIRC and the pulseaudio lirc plugin.LIRC itself is working, I can verify it recognizes my remote control input by using irw, and all other portions of my lircrc file are executed correctly, such as my On Screen Display. However, no changes are made to the system volume.

I have already reinstalled the lirc pulseaudio plugin to no avail. Can anyone else confirm if this does/doesn't work on their own system?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: PulseAudio / DBus And KDE Broken - Dead

May 31, 2010

Recently I had installed a kubuntu (i'm new to linux), recently being 3 days, 1 day of actual use. When I tried to watch dvd's I installed vlc and it didn't work at all. I made this post: [URL]. Then I made a post at vlc forums and asked what can be wrong with vlc as it is closing after anything. They asked for some debug log, I provided it

Your system is so broken that it's not funny. PulseAudio is dead, DBus is dead, KDE is dead. Sorry. Please refer to Ubuntu support. [URL] What exactly should i fix in my system? And what do they mean by it being broken and dead? I can pretty well listen to audio and watch video and kde is working fine with all that nice eyecandy...

Ubuntu :: Video (gdm) With ATI Driver - Get Black Screens After Initing PulseAudio

Jun 25, 2011

after initing PulseAudio, again only black sreens. I booted from an USB stick, tried mounting both filesystems, worked fine. I renamed my xorg.conf and booted from the first array. Worked with minimal video (low resolution, one screen only). Tried ATI control panel, claimed no driver active. I downloaded and installed a newer version of the proprietary ATI driver. Rebooted, got 3 screens at the right resolution. Problem seemed to be solved, all I had to do was configure ATI control panel to use 3 screens as one desktop.

Started ATI control panel, after clicking on the right section (nothing saved yet), CPU usage spiked, mouse froze. Crap. Rebooted, gnome froze before even showing desktop or populating top and bottom panels. Just black screens with empty panels top and bottom. Booted the USB. Ran fsck on both filesystems. No errors. Fear of not being to able to perform any work today ensued. Logged into ubuntuforums and explained the situation.

Fedora X86/64bit :: No Sound From Pulseaudio , ALSA After 2.6.40 Kernel Upgrade / Get That?

Aug 2, 2011

I just got the upgrade for the Linux Kernel version 2.6.40-4 on my Fedora 15 x86-64 box today, and the installation completed with no problems. However when I rebooted after doing the upgrade, I noticed that I had no sound. I use an ATI Radeon HD 4350 video card, and the opensource ATI driver, and use the HDMI audio from it for sound, since my monitor has a sound output jack on it. I've booted into the previous kernel (2.6.38.8-35), and sound works fine. I've tried with the new kernel in both KDE (my default desktop environment) and XFCE to get sound, and it does not work in either one. I've tried installing the VLC Phonon Backend instead of the GStreamer Backend, reinstalling Pulseaudio, reinstalling Alsa, modprobing the necessary modules needed for the card, checking all configurations with the available Pulseaudio tools (paprefs, pavumeter, pavucontrol), checked the volumes using alsamixer, and reinstalling the ALSA Pulseaudio plugin. After trying all of these, I can still get no sound out of any application, and I also noticed that Flash video plays at 2-3 times it's normal speed after the upgrade. Again, these problems do not occur on my previous kernel. Did I maybe overlook something, or can anyone else think of something I could try?

Ubuntu Installation :: ATI Driver And New Kernel 2.6.35 Kernel - No Longer Work

Nov 24, 2010

With the recent upgrade kernel, my ATI driver can no longer work. After upgrading to the new kernel, upon reboot I would get stuck at the "checking battery status" and can't boot into kubuntu.

I'm running Kubuntu 10.10 64 on intel i5 with radeon hd 4870.

So I thought I messed something up since I was fooling around with conky script the day before. I did a clean install of kubuntu 10.10 64 and reset all my settings and my files. At this point, everything works smoothly and I can reboot multiple times without a problem.

I proceeded to install the Radeon catalyst driver following the documentation, which worked perfectly for me on the previous kernel. After rebooting, I can no longer get pass the "checking battery state" black screen. I had to boot into safe book, uninstall all fglrx and also delete xorg.conf to be able to boot back in normally.

Programming :: Netlink Sockets In Kernel And Ethernet Driver - Kernel Crash

Aug 31, 2010

I write the network driver. Transmission of packets in user space I do through netlink socket`s. In user space there is a handling of packets and their transmission on other device (however, it isn't important).

Problem in that any time, packets through the driver in system, and is reverse, are transferred normally. But then there comes the moment when the kernel crash. If to look in syslog it seems to me that comes deadlock. Also I think that it is related with netlink socket`s.

I can't find the information on that anywhere how correctly to use netlink socket`s in kernel space. Can at you will any a reason into the account of synchronization of sockets and the driver in kernel space?

I can give the driver code if it is necessary.

Ubuntu :: Installation Broken After Trying To Install Proprietary GPU Driver?

Jul 19, 2011

My laptop runs really hot and after reading a few threads around the forum I came across one that said it was because of the fact that ubuntu comes with an open source driver. All you have to do is update to the proprietary driver and everything is fixed. So I went to the menu and looked for the driver. I honestly didn't check if the one that was found was compatible with my graphics card, I just assumed that the one that it found was the right one. I installed it and restarted and ubuntu wouldn't load. It goes through the initial load but when it comes time to bring up the login page, it stays black and never advances. I assumed that this was a result of an incorrect driver. Again, I turned to the forums and found that other people had this problem. So I grabbed my trusty live CD and tried to load up a live session and remove the config file that points to the driverThe live CD wouldn't load. Same thing for recovery mode. It gets to a certain point and stops. This link is an image to where the boot stops:

If i deactivate that and use the STA driver instead, it says active, but currently not in use. When i use the non proprietary driver, i can check mark on 'activate wireless', but nothing happens. When i use the STA driver there are no wireless options. I'm not sure if its important, but when i do "sudo lshw -C network" when the STA driver is active but not in use, the network status changes from 'disabled' to 'unclaimed'. When i came here, i tried to install "firmware-b43-lpphy-installer" as the sticky said i should, but the installation fails. Ubuntu :: Kernel 17 Update - Grub2 Broken Again

Jan 7, 2010

So I know I should have known better then to turn my updates back on after the 15 and 16 kernel updates crashed ubuntu and grub but I did anyway and once again after a new kernel gets installed I'm stuck at the grub sh prompt.

Been down the road before... tried using
linux /boot/vml....... root=/dev/sda1 loop=/ubuntu/disks/root.disk ro
When I use the 16 or 17 kernel I get an error stating "invalid imaginary number"...

So I use the 14 kernal and enter
initrd /boot/initrd.....
boot

And it boots like it did the last time this crashed. I went to the terminal and entered
sudo apt-get install grub 2
sudo update-grub2

And then rebooted like I did last time expecting the problem to be fixed and at least be able to boot up the 14-generic. It didn't fixed this time. So now what do I do to fix grub and what do I do about having 2 unbootable kernals??

Ubuntu :: Display Broken After Kernel Update

Mar 17, 2010

After updating to version 2.6.31-20-generic, my desktop computer with an ATi HD4850 graphics card, using the fglrx driver, now won't boot to X. It goes through the boot process and displays the splash screen, but after that there is nothing on the screen. Choosing an older kernel version from GRUB doesn't make a difference. I don't even know how to diagnose the problem properly. I can boot into recovery mode and get to the command line, however, starting x from there only leaves me with a blank screen.

so the source of the problem is that I had installed the catalyst driver from amd.com, which needs to be reinstalled with every kernel update. I didn't know this in advance, so now I'd like a way to revert back to fglrx from the repos. Sadly, the community docs only seem to cover the graphical way of doing this, which is kind of useless to me at the moment. The ATi driver docs gave me a way to uninstall the catalyst driver using only the command line. So now I've booted back into Ubuntu and selected to install the fglrx driver from System → Hardware Drivers. However, now when I boot up, I get the message: "(EE) Unable to initialize PCS database

Debian Configuration :: Nouveau-driver Broken After Update

Jan 4, 2016

Yesterday I installed some updates on my Jessie system (I don't remember if the kernel was also updated). After rebooting the system nothing happens after the "Loading intial ramdisk"-message. If I boot in recovery mode the boot stops at the message:

Code: Select allfb: switching to nouveaufb from simple

If I add "nouveau.modeset=0" temporary to the GRUB-entry for the recovery mode, it will boot up in the console-mode.

I was able to get an ethernet connection with "dhclient eth0" and removed the "xserver-xorg-video-nouveau" package. Then I installed it and the removed gnome-desktop again. Before removing it, aptitude said the following to the package:

Code: Select alli A xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

Now it only says:

Code: Select alli   xserver-xorg-video-nouveau

But this didn't change my problem. I found a similar case in the internet, but there were no solutions for it: [URL] ....

The next thing I would do, is to install the proprietary nvidia-drivers, but since I have a GTX 960 video card, I would have to use experimental drivers. So I'm afraid to make it more worse trying to install this drivers.

Also I'm not sure if it really is a driver-specific of kernel-specific problem. My kernel is version 3.16.0-4-amd64.

CentOS 5 :: Broken Kernel / How To Recompile?

Dec 15, 2009

I tried to run some virtual machine using Virtual Machine Manager but the guest OS (windows server 2003) was not able to "see" the rest of my network. I believe VMM did some NAT-ing (192.168.122.x subnet) so i'm not able to "see" my network. I tried various network setting in VMM but couldnt get it to pull my network IP (192.168.1.x subnet). So i installed VirtualBox as a work around because i know VB work when i tried it on my windows machine. I ran into some issue getting VB to run, i think it was that i need to compile the kernel to "optimize" it for VB. I am fairly new to linux so that the impression that i get when i research for the fix to get VB working. In some of the forum post people suggest few things and it seem to me like it to compile the kernel. After a few hours of working i finally got it to compile but the computer crashed during compilation.

I am guess what happened is that i was trying to optimize the kernel for VB but the version of kernel i was using (2.6.18-164.6.1.el5xen) is already optimized for xen (VMM) so it crashed. I am looking to restore or recompile the 2.6.18-164.6.1.el5xen kernel. I am not sure if this is the right thing to do to fix it. With my limited knowledge of linux that all i can think of.

CentOS 5 Networking :: Eth0 Now Broken After Last Kernel Update

Nov 23, 2010

I am currently working to get to a stable dual boot Win7/CentOS 5.5 configuration on a Dell Latitude E6510 with the Intel 82577LM chipset. I haven't gotten the Centrino N WiFI chipset working yet, but the Eth0 device was working just fine. However, yesterday I did a system update. I did not pay close attention, but I believe the update did mention networking, because I thought it might help me get my wireless going. Now, Eth0 fails with the message, "Determining IP information for eth0... failed; no link present. Check cable?" It does this at boot up and if we try reactivating it once the system is up. We have tried unstalling and re-installing the driver. The Window 7 boot sees the adapter and runs just fine. I was at a different site location yesterday when everything was working, but my co-workers and I can't help but think it might be related to the update yesterday, since everything worked prior to the update and Windoze 7 works fine with the adapter.

I have not been able to mount my NTFS harddrive on the CentOS side, despite installing fuse, and I don't have wireless, which makes it difficult to get access to new drivers. I also have a FAT32 partition that would be great to share between the boots for passing info, but I haven't found a way to mount a FAT32 partition in CentOS.

Debian Installation :: Upgrade / System Broken After Moving To 3.16 Kernel

Apr 28, 2015

I got a rather big problem since an attempt to upgrade. My debian version is 8.0.I upgraded when apt proposed the change. I did that in two steps, with apt-get upgrade and then apt-get dist-upgrade, with the installation of a new kernel. I moved from 3.2.0-4-686-pae to 3.16.0-4-686-pae.Since the upgrade, I can't boot my system any longer.During the boot sequence, this message appears with a countdown (it's copied by hand) :

Code: Select all(1 of 4) a start job is running for dev-disk-byX2du

At the end of the countdown, the boot sequence starts again, and ends up on an invite to log in as root in rescue mode. I can't connect (maybe due to some azerty/qwerty issue, I got a French keyboard. I tried to type in "qwerty mode", with no success (the password is not prompted)).I can connect with the 3.2 kernel however, selecting it form the grub interface. I can't log in in rescue mode either, but with this kernel the boot sequence goes on and I can log as a regular user or as root, at the end of the boot sequence. There is no X, but the system seems to work. What could I do to make the system boot properly with the new kernel, or to go back to the 3.2 version ?
