Hardware :: Samsung ML-2525W / ML-1665 Printers?
Oct 20, 2010
I am considering these printers:Samsung ML-2525W & ML-1665 I am considering buying one of these printers. Does anyone have experience with these? I was leaning toward the ML-1665 since it was more economical and I only need it for home use. Would there be much difference between them? How do they work with Linux?

I like ubuntu alright, but prefer Debian overall. Before I reinstall Debian I was wondering if during the install if the latest release would automatically recognize the Samsung ML 1665 as the latest ubuntu release did. If not, how does one get the printer installed.

I've been using Kubuntu 9.10 for several months now. For most of that time, I configured and used with no problem several network printers.. a HP LaserJet 3015 at home connected to a Windows machine, and a Xerox Phaser 8560 at my coworking space connected directly to a router.
However, several weeks ago I was at the coworking space, requested a print from my web browser, and in the printer selection dialog, observed the list of printers expanding... some sort of autodetection of network printers was occuring, and multiple instances of the same printer were being offered, with slightly different names. Printing to these devices did not work.
Now, after a reboot, there are NO network printers available no matter what network I'm connected to. When I use the Kubuntu printer configuration tool and try to set up a new printer, it asks me to "Select a connection" to which the only option it gives me is "Other". When I put in an address for the printer it just cycles endlessly, never finding anything.

I have a shared printer on my Ubuntu 10.04 machine, and it cannot be seen by other computers (macbook, pc) on the network. I have the printer shared, but it is not a member of the 'Shared Printers' group. When I add it to the 'Shared Printers' group, it stays there until I close the 'Printing' application GUI. Then, when I re-open 'Printing,' it is no longer in that group. I think this is why I can't see it on the network, due to the wording of the option in Server Settings to 'Publish shared printers connected to this system.'

How would I go about adding printers to Ubuntu that are not there by default? I have access to a collection of PPD's where at least one of them is not in Ubuntu by default. Is this something that is done at the kernel level?

I have been using a HP OfficeJet 6110 for years on Linux without problems but now it's time for something new. I was considering HP OfficeJet 6500 but the reviews aren't that convincing, like the printer starts up very slow and is very loud. I would like something quite and fast that works well in a small Linux network.

I'm thinking of buying one of the above as the HP 750 PCS I have hooked up to the wife's iMac is getting long in the tooth and is NOT well supported my Apple! It will either print or scan but not both without rebooting between tasks. One of the attractions of the Kodak is the cheap cost of ownership and they appear to be supported my Apple so that would be good! But what about Ubuntu support as a network printer?

Does Linux support USB Printers? I noticed under add printer it shows Lpt#1, Serial Port #1, Serial Port#2,Other and Network Printer but no USB. Is there something that needs to be installed to have USB Printer support? USB is the standard connection type of most printers theses days and only high end printers have Ethernet and I don't think any modern printer still uses a parallel or serial port.

My friend is of the argument that he will buy only H.P printers, because of the HPLIP (Hewlett PackardLinux Imaging project) where H.P developers work to make open source drivers available for linux and BSD.
This is probably the only instance where the device manufacturers works on fully free open sourced projects which support the full functionality (not merely the just works bit)how correct is his argument ?does this mean that HP is the only Printer company that provides Linux driver support for its devices ?

I am using Fedora 12. I am connected by Wi-Fi to a large network with dozens of printers (the network is running CUPS). How can I set up my fedora box to "see" those printers so that "print..." file menu option works? Also, I know the address of the CUPS server; when I go to System->Administration->Printing and I go to Server->Connect I can connect successfully and I can see all the many printers on the network. But I haven't figured out how to print from my favourite programs yet.

Strangest thing happened today. I tried to print a simple text document from Kwrite and noticed it would not print. I tried it again selecting a different printer. No result. I tried copying the contents and pasting into Libre Office, then print...no printers to select...Odd. I decided to check on cupsd status from CLI. It was up. Here's where things get stranger. I open CUPS web manager and select printers...'No printers found' Okay, that's odd since I should have about 12, and they are showing up in Kwrite but not in LibreOffice nor CUPS manager.
Assuming Kwrite used some sort of cache I decided to check out /etc/cups/printers.conf....Hmmm zero byte file with but in the same directory a file printers.conf.O dated about 7 days ago. So I did an /etc/init.d/cups stop, did a cat printers.conf.O > printers.conf and /et c/init.d/cups start...all is back to normal. WTH?! What waxed all of my printers?

I'm using the newest VB 3.18 Lucid AMD64 .deb downloaded from Sun. Previous versions have not had USB support in Lucid. Now, when I start the XP guest, all my USB devices seem to be detected. My USB phone is shown as 'busy' as is my mouse. However, both my printers remain greyed out and are shown as being 'unavailable'. I have tried manually adding the printer filters before starting the guest, but no dice. Is anyone else having this problem? Any ideas as to a possible cause?

I installed ubuntu 10.04 just after the first release was available.I configured everything - including my printers - and all was working 100% perfectly. Last friday (or perhaps thursday) I did the first update (it was big, ~60megs), and since then I have lost my printers. They are no longer listed on the "Printers" information panel. In fact, I can no longer add printers (the option is grayed out). In fact, the only option I can select is the connect to server. If I try local, I get the error that the server cannot be found.
EDIT: the original printers are networked printers, accessed via an IP address.

I upgraded the Ubuntu 10.04, and afterwards I can't print. Cups won't detect printers, hp-setup won't, hp-probe won't. Tried rebooting, reinstalling HPLIP, & CUPS. Installed latest version of HPLIP. did a purge of HPLIP and CUPS, and reinstalled, rebooted.

What we need is to have a folder in common where we can create, edit or delete folders and files. And there's a printer connected to the desktop PC, how can I see it from the notebook? I installed samba but can't get it to work, or I just don't know how to configure it.

I am running VirtualBox on a Windows XP host. I have two containers, one running Fedora 13 and the other running Debian 5. I set up the three printers I have at home on each system. The printers in Fedora work great. The same printers in Debian are disabled and will not print. I've also installed cups-pdf on each system. Works on Fedora, disabled on Debian. I don't know what is different. I set them up the same way with the same drivers, but I cannot enable or otherwise use the printers with Debian.
Is there some admin setting I'm not aware of to allow printing from Debian?

I have an Ubuntu Karmic (9.10) installation with LTSP 5.2 installed. I'm using CUPS version 1.4.1. The other day I ran an lpoptions -d printername command not realizing that I was setting the system default incorrectly. Now my issue is that all apps see the CUPS printers correctly, except for Firefox which doesn't see any (Print to File only option). I've searched for hours trying to find the configuration file that this command impacted for Firefox with no luck.

I'm running Fedora 15, x86_64, xfce gui on top of metacity.
Before I upgraded from Fedora 14, I could use several printers.
1. Now, when I open the print dialog, no printers show up from inside Firefox, Thunderbird, gnucash, f-spot, opera, planner, eclipse.
2. The printers ARE recognized inside Adobe acroread, bash/tcsh command line, libreoffice, openoffice, frescobaldi, gedit, evolution, gwenview, okular
3. Gimp is sort of in the middle. It doesn't show any printers in the print dialog, but I can print in only black & white via Gutenprint.
