I'm running Win 7 on 3G ram on my host machine

I need to open an Ubuntu 10.04 VM in VMWare 7 and it needs to stay open for whole day for accessing some sites and connections.

I won't serve anything, just uses putty and sometimes firefox.

I run it on 256 MB but did anyone managed to run it under this. I don't know too much about linux and its deamons.

How can i disable them and which are useless for me ? for example i can see that evolution related deamon is running but i did not open it ever.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: 11.3 - Graphics Not Running At Reasonable Speed

Oct 22, 2010

On an old laptop I needed some package (pdftk) from 11.3 and so I upgraded. But I cannot get the graphics running at a reasonable speed now. This old laptop has a Radeon RV350 (mobility Radeon 9600 M10) as shown by lspci. The current ATI closed source drivers don't support this card any more but the legacy driver doesn't support the 2.6.34.7-0.4-default kernel anymore.

Using the open source xf86-video-ati driver gives me an unacceptable alternative:
Without a kernel boot parameter it's dead slow, glxgears shows only 200 frames/sec and my Opengl application (see below) is just unusable with this setting.

Adding the 'nomodeset' kernel parameter make the graphics much faster - glxgears reports 1800 frames/sec - BUT now my Opengl application freezes the machine (only a power cycle can revive it). I'm using the Python/OpenGL application "Impressive" to present pdf files.

Fedora :: How To Reset Login Font To Reasonable Size

Jul 27, 2010

I am running Fedora 13 x86_64, and have been using the nouveau display driver.I have just installed the Nvidia driver using the easyLife application. Having already set up most things as I like, I only set easyLife to install the Truetype fonts and the Nvidia driver.the initial re-start was a bit nasty, the login screen fonts were huge and the desktop font also huge. I did manage to reset the desktop font size via System> Preferences> Appearance>Fonts>Details. The resolution was set somewhere in excess of 300, and I brought that back to 96 which has put the desktop back to normal. The login font size remains very large, and I have followed advice to set the DPI in the monitor section of xorg.conf 'Option "DPI" "96 x 96", but that hasn't had any effect.Does anyone know how to reset the login font to a reasonable size?

General :: Multiple Tmpfs Mounts And Reasonable Settings For /tmp?

Jul 17, 2011

My laptop now has 8GB of memory, so I think mounting a tmpfs over /tmp is a reasonable thing to do. I also want to prepare for getting a SSD in the near future. The computer has a 1GB swap partition and I've set vm.swappiness=20

1) There is also a tmpfs mounted to /dev/shm. Both have the default size of 50%. Is there a way to get /dev/shm and /tmp to share the same capacity without doing a symlink or bind?

2) Is the swap partition a good size (is that swappiness value ok)? What happens if /tmp runs out of room? Should I increase the swap size to something really large like 15G (because I have swappiness so low...)?

Software :: Gnuplot - Combining A Linear Range And Log-scale Range In The Same X-axis?

Apr 24, 2011

I want to plot a set of data in only one plot. The problem is that some points of the data should be better plotted in a linear scale (lets say 0 to 100,000) but there are other data points that, exceding the value 100,000, would be better plotted in a logarithmic scale, as they goes in the range 100,000 to 500,000,000. Let's say the data is:

Code:

X Y
0 100
10000 80
20000 75

[code]....

Is there a way to plot all these points in the same plot in only one X-axis showing two different ranges in that axis: linear: 0-100,000 logarithmic: 100,000 - 1,000,000,000?The axis would be read, for example, as:

Code:
|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|-----|
0 20k 40k 60k 80k 100k 1M 10M 100M 1G

(The abbreviations k-M-G are not the important point. Just shown for clarity)

Programming :: Bash Script To Ping A Range Or Own IP-range?

Apr 11, 2011

I want to build a bash script, which can ping a range IP adresses which will be filled in by the admin. If there is no IP-adress filled in, then the script must ping the subnet where the system is logged on. So if my ip is 192.168.1.6, then the script must ping from 192.168.1.1 till 192.168.1.255 Or else, if there is given a beginning and ending ip it must ping that!

The first part of the bash script is to ping a given range (see below). But there is one problem, how can I tell the script to ping from $begin till $end, [..] is of course wrong! But what must be filled in there???

echo "Enter beginning IP-adres:"
read begin
echo "Enter ending IP-adres:"
read end
ping -c 1 $begin [..] $end

The second part is to find my own ip and ping the whole range.. How to do that? I only can find my own IP, but I cant ping the whole range,, how to do that?

#!/bin/bash
ifconfig | grep 'inet addr:' | grep -v '127.0.0.1' |
cut -d: -f2 | awk '{ print $1 }'

Hardware :: CAS Latency For AMD Phenom II Overclocking

Jun 12, 2010

I'm getting close to ordering the components for a new machine based on the AMD Deneb quad core and had one last question.I'd like to try a little careful overclocking, not only for the performance increase but also to learn how. Nothing extreme, no gaming, just whatever I can get with good stability with the stock heatsink and fan.I was going to get 8GB on 2x4GB strips but they are all CAS latency 9. The MB has 4 slots for a total of 16GB capacity. Would I be better off going with 4x2GB strips and try to get a lower latency strip like maybe 7?

Mar 12, 2010

Not so long time ago I have installed Centos 5.3 on my AMD Phenom II X4 server (I am hosting game servers on it). Only today I noticed, that cpuinfo shows me only two CPUs. I watched for the info in the dmesg and found there that the system boots up only 2CPUs.

Here is some info from the dmesg:

Quote:

Am I correctly understand that something wrong in BIOS? Or it is something else?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Slow Performance With Mutexes And MySql On Multi Core CPU - AMD Phenom II X4 965 - With 11.3

Nov 11, 2010

I have installed OpenSuse 11.3 32 Bit in a virtual machine on an older computer on a Windows XP host and on a new computer with AMD Phenom II X4 965 processor.

With sysbench I tested the performance of mutex and on the new computer it is 3 - 4 times slower than on the virtual machine. Other performance tests with sysbench for CPU, memory and threads are faster on new computer like expected. I tested this, because I have a slower performance of table creation in MySql tested with sql-bench, where creation of 10000 tables lasts 45 seconds on the virtual machine but over 400 seconds on the new computer.

I have tested with kernel-desktop and kernel-default but there are not large differences. File creation was tested with bonnie++ and is on newer computer faster as expected.

My questions are:
- Why is the mutex handling on the multi core CPU slower than in the virtual machine and how to speed up this?
- Or is there another reason why table creation of MySql is so much slower on multi core CPU?

Fedora :: Running A Dual Boot Windows 7 Home Premium And 12 System On An AMD Phenom Platform

May 31, 2010

I am/was(?) running a dual boot Windows 7 Home Premium and Fedora 12 system on an AMD Phenom platform.

I thought that I would try the KDE desktop and installed it with the command

yum groupinstall "KDE (K Desktop Environment)"

After tasting KDE for a while I decided that I far prefer Gnome.

I removed the KDE with

yum groupremove "KDE (K Desktop Environment)"

This appeared to work but I then found that whilst I can boot into Windows 7, I can no longer boot into Fedora 12.

I have tried booting the F12 DVD and going into to the Rescue function. I re-installed grub but still cannot boot into F12.

I have looked at grub.conf but can see nothing wrong.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Get Temperature Of CPU?

Jun 6, 2011

In my system, the temperature of the CPU can be known from the file,/sys/bus/acpi/devices/LNXTHERM:00/ thermal_zone/temp . But I have found that not all systems have this file. Is there a generic method to get the temperature. Installing a package for this purpose won't be a solution as I'm building a simple gnome-shell extension. Something that comes along with the kernel would be perfect.

What could be other files that can possibly store temperature information, so that it would work on most atleast if not all? Any help like the file that stores temperature on your particular system only would also be highly appreciated.

OpenSUSE :: HDD Temperature Control?

Mar 29, 2010

There is a question, i'd like to ask: is there any decent program to monitor HDD temperature for linux? WHy are they so few? Suse Install repositories do not show any that could be installed. I used to use hddtemp on my previous 11.2 gnome installation, but it seems now something gone wrong, and i cant get this program anymore through: "sudo apt-get install hddtemp" and receive "sudo: apt-get: command not found", so as i am a newbie i can barely guess what is wrong. maybe there are any other programs to get this thing running. Its really puzzling because every laptop user need such tool badly, and i do not understand why is there so many monitor tools for cpu temperature and not a single good for hard drive which is far more important than cpu temperature, that rises and drops constantly as soon as your fans are fine???

Ubuntu :: Can't Monitor Cpu Temperature?

Jan 2, 2010

I've recently installed Karmic on my new machine with the following specs;

Asus M4A785TD-V EVO Motherboard
AMD Athlon II X4 620 2.6GHz
Crucial 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3
Coolermaster Elite 330 Case
Western Digital WD5000AAKS 500GB

I'm looking to install some sort of temperature monitoring for my cpu and have had luck using either lm-sensors or acpi. With lm sensors, I've followed the various how to's on the forum and am still coming back with nothing. Trying to add hardware monitoring to panel brings up a 'no sensors found!' error, and x-sensors just starts up with a blank screen.

'sensors' in terminal spits back this -
Code:
lou@lou-quad:~$ sensors
No sensors found!
Make sure you loaded all the kernel drivers you need.
Try sensors-detect to find out which these are.
lou@lou-quad:~$

I've added the relevant lines into etc/modules as per the last question during configuration but still no joy. I've just run 'sensors-detect and had a gander at the output, and I'm wondering if its as simple as no one has written a driver for my mobo yet.

The reason is that my laptop's temperature and fan speed increases slowly when I convert large video files from one format to another and the computer eventually shuts down spontaneously when the temperature becomes critical. I'd like to watch this so I can prevent it. So I need the app.
