Hardware :: Older Dual Processor Mobos

Jan 31, 2010

Not sure if this is where this belongs, but I figure someone will at least point me in the right direction...So, I have an old MSI 694d Pro board, with 2 PIII 800's on it. So, I know it will support up to two Gigs of RAM, which is cool, and up to 933Mhz cpus..I know if it was a single processor board, the difference would be negligible, BUT, would I see any kind of difference if I found 2 933s and stuck them on. (Once you move into dual processors, I kind of get lost in the math...lol)

I think I could pick up some older PIIIs for pretty cheap. But would even $5 be a waste of money? Also, if anyone else has this board, I'm having networking issues. Ubuntu knows there is a PCI network card attatched, (And i've tried 3 different cards) but it will NOT connect. Would there be a board setting that would prevent network connections?

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Mainboard With Dual Processor Socket

I consider building a new computer using a mainboard with support for two processors. I wish to do this to improve performance of course, specifically in regards to audio production. Though, what I would like to know is if anyone has some experience with using such a hardware on an ordinary desktop system and if there are some general implications I should be aware of?

Ubuntu :: Installing 10.04 On Top Of Older Version With Dual Boot

Jul 25, 2010

I admit that I am a bit confused on how to proceed with this.I currently have an older version of Ubuntu (6 something) and windows vista and I have dual booting. I am trying to install 10.04 on top of the older Ubuntu and I want to keep the Windows partition. Last time I tried, I completely screwed up.I have multiple partitions now with a bunch of smaller ones that got created by mistake. I would like to re-size my partitions to have 1 main windows partition, 1 linux partition and 1 swap file partition. My HD is 160GB and I would ideally like to have the Ubuntu and Windows partitions roughly the same size.I included some screenshots of the install process and also a screenshot of my partitions.

Ubuntu :: Enabling Dual Monitors With Older ATI Video Cards

Oct 19, 2010

Is there a simple way to have both of the monitors on a system enabled? The video cards are both older ATI cards. One is a Radeon 9000 AGP 64MB, and the other is quite a bit older (ATI 3D Rage Pro 2x). When Ubuntu 10.10 is booting up, the splash screen appears nicely on the left-side monitor, and then the final desktop appears on the right-side monitor, but when I go to system --> preferences --> monitors, only one monitor is available. I'm guessing the right monitor is fed by the Radeon (I can check if it matters). If the splash screen appears on the left side when booting, why isn't that display available after the bootup has completed?

General :: Only One Core Of Dual Core Processor Are Working

Mar 14, 2011

I recently read in a forum that by default the Linux kernel only activates one of two cores in a dual core processor. Searching online gave one option to find out and that was the mpstat command. I therefore ran the command and got the following output. As the result says, it shows only 1 cpu. I was wondering what I could do to activate both cores in my machine, and whether doing so was going to cause me any problems.

Ubuntu :: What Does It Mean For Processor To Be N-bit

Apr 5, 2010

I have really never thought of this question before up until i was asked by my friend what does it mean for a processor to be 64 bit as opposed to 32 bit? how is it better? sadly for me i wasn't able to answer it. i did a little of googling (i must admit i didn't have much time) and wasn't able to find an answer. What does it mean for a processor to be n-bit, where n = {4, 8, 16, 32, 64}. Aside from knowing that I can operate on larger data values on a 64 bit processor rather than on a 32 bit one, I know nothing more.

Ubuntu :: Processor Use All The Way Up All The Time

Mar 3, 2011

I'm working on this Intel Celeron HP33w Pavillion with 512mb ram and a 180 gb hard drive. Installed xp on it, partitioned half the drive and left the other half blank. xp installed no prob, then installed ubuntu on the second partition letting ubuntu create the partition and swap space (which was 3 gigs) and it installed fine (aside from being incredibly slow to go through the actual install process). Once finally booted into ubuntu with no other programs running aside from the standard ones that start with ubuntu, i added the system monitor to the panel and expanded all the other monitors. Memory was normal, cup average was 100% and cpu usage was 100%. Figured something went wrong with the install so I reinstalled and got the same result. Window xp runs just as fast as it should with 512mb of ram so I'm sort of at a loss as to why ubuntu is eating up all my memory with no programs running.

General :: Processor Selection For Box

Mar 3, 2010

I am going to order the parts and build a new PC soon. One goal I have on my new machine will be to use Windows as little as possible and use Linux. In Linux I will need to use an emulator/virtual machine of some sort for things like playing World of Warcraft or City of Heroes and running Photoshop. (No, Gimp is not just as good for my needs). I plan to have 4Gb, to start, of ram and my question comes to one of processor selection. I assume that running a Windows app in Linux would be one of the most system taxing things I could do. Would I be better served by more processor cores or a higher clock speed for these tasks? I will undoubtedly have an AMD proc. I have been considering the following.

Athlon II X3 440 3.0 Ghz.
Phenom II X3 720 Black Edition 2.8 Ghz
Phenom II X2 555 Black Edition 3.2 Ghz
Athlon II X4 630 2.8 Ghz
AMD Phenom II X2 545 3.0 Ghz

I am leaning towards the X3 440 (or 435) for the sake of cost so that I can squeeze a discreet video card into my budget but that it outside the scope of my question. Extra info just in case The Black Editions are very over-clockable with unlocked CPU multipliers. The Phenom II CPUs have 6Mb of L3 cache and the Phenom II CPUs do not. The question boils down to how well Linux and Wine are multi-threaded to make use of all available cores and what impact, if any, L3 cache has in a Linux environment.

Every time I try, I select 2GHZ, and re-open; then it's displayed that 500MHZ was selected. I'm unable to pick any speed, the computer has a mind of it's own in that sense. It's essentially stuck at 500MHZ for 98% of the uptime, which makes it impossible to do anything more than web browsing.
