Hardware :: No HDMI Images During Startup

Mar 20, 2011

Is it usual, when using both hdmi and dvi/dvi-d connections from a video card, to have no hdmi output on startup? Using a 28" monitor on hdmi setting and also a smaller lcd monitor cloned through my main computer via nvidia's / ubuntu 10.10's System-Administration-nVidia X Server Settings menu listing. Both work fine once ubuntu is up and running. I'm using 1920x1200 and 1680x1050 resolutions respectively. I need an identical image in another part of the room for using a virtualbox program in Win xp ==> hence the cloning.

If only the hdmi monitor is plugged in, I see all messages on startup (post, video, ubuntu) through login. However once the dvi/dvi-d jack is also plugged in, I get no output from the hdmi until the ubuntu login screen appears, whether or not the second monitor is turned on or not. If the second monitor is also on during startup that monitor will show all startup messages though.

This causes problems for example on the times I've had to do some trouble shooting and needed to boot into terminal mode to correct gnome problem. In which case I get no image on the hdmi screen and need to rearrange the monitors to see the lcd image. What's going on during startup rather than "being in the dark" so to speak. I'm wondering if this behaviour is due to the workings of my particular video card or if this is a normal behaviour of ubuntu or some setting, that I need to adjust.

ubuntu 2.6.35-28-generic

Fedora :: HDMI Video Output On F14 - HDMI Does Not Appear As Option

Feb 8, 2011

I realise this is an issue that has been covered a lot, one way or another, but at least from what I've been able to find, most of the discussion centres around getting HDMI audio to work. However, I have problems even getting the video to work from my laptop's HDMI output.

I have an HP dv6z-se, with an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 6550 (1 Gb) video card and using F14/KDE. My problem is that when I go to System Settings/Display/Monitor, Fedora doesn't actually seem to realise my computer even has an HDMI output and only displays options for VGA and my integrated screen.

When I plug it into my LCD screen, sometimes I get a 'No Signal' message and sometimes I get garbled static and a message about unrecognised input and the frequency it's coming at.

I read elsewhere in the forum that someone was able to get video working by editing their xorg.conf file, so I went in and tried to see if I could replicate that, but none of the files in my xorg.conf.d folder had anything related to video outputs (as far as I can tell at this point).

Software :: Download Some Images From A Website - Single Column Of Links To The Images?

Jul 26, 2010

I am running Linux from a DVD, not installed. I am not good with installing software, but since the DVD cannot be corrupted, I am content to operate this way. Lately, I have been having problems that previously did not occur. When I try to click on the checkbox to get rid of emails, it doesn't register in most cases, or when it does, I am clicking multiple times so it registers twice, meaning it is unchecked again. Even more frustrating is some issues that are affecting my ability to update my business. I am trying to modify spreadsheets (text not calculations).

Whenever I try to click & drag to select something to change, it keeps jumping around to select only some of what I want, something else or some combination of the 2. When I try to copy and paste several fields from 1 column to another, everything from the several fields in the source column ends up together in the last field in the target column. I am also trying to download some images from a website. There is a single column of links to the images. I have to click on the link to get to the image in order to copy it, then back out to continue looking for more links to do the same.

My computer keeps jumping back 2 steps, then forward 2 steps, and sometimes I lose my place in that list. I could deal with it if it were a small number of links, but this is a list of probably close to 20,000 links. Again, i am operating off of a live DVD so this should not be corruptible, but this has just started happening, and has been an issue the last several sessions.

The problem with this is that each image is then stretched to fit on one page, whereas I would like to keep the original dimensions of the images and put as many as possible on one page in the PDF file before moving on to another page.

General :: Replace DVD / CD Install Images With USB Images

Sep 21, 2009

I am just spent half an hour hunting for a thing that should be totally available already:USB install images of Ubuntu, knoppix and all the others. And, the only good way are so far complicated tutorials where you extract the stuff from an CD image. Why??Hasn't everybody notices that CDs/DVDs are vanishing big time? That more and more systems don't have the readers anymore? Instead of following a 10 point instruction list, it would be nice to just be able to download a Ubuntu 8.10 or whatever USB image and be able to beam that DIRECTLY to a USB stick with a dd command.

Or am a missing something here? Does this exist? It should by no means be mariginal, considering how important USB stick in specific and flash memory in general have become.

Debian Hardware :: 5.1 With HDMI And ATI

Aug 15, 2015

So, i've installed a Debian Jessie (minimal install "gnome-core") and i'm using an ATI radeon R5 230, with libre driver (and non-free firmware) and all works well in stereo.

But i'm looking for surround sound via HDMI (5.1).

My configuration is : PC --- HDMI ---> Pioneer Receiver ---- HDMI ----> Screen

The receiver looks well detected as seen in the eld file :

Code: Select allcat /proc/asound/card1/eld#0.0
Code: Select allmonitor_present      1
eld_valid      1
monitor_name
connection_type      HDMI
eld_version      [0x2] CEA-861D or below
edid_version      [0x0] no CEA EDID Timing Extension block present

[Code] ....

I've created a udev rule for pulseaudio for loading a personal conf file with a profile i've created.

Code: Select allATTRS{vendor}=="0x1002", ATTRS{device}=="0xaa98", ENV{PULSE_PROFILE_SET}="HDMI5.1.conf"

Code: Select all[Mapping hdmi-surround-51]
device-strings = hdmi:%f
channel-map = front-left,front-right,rear-left,rear-right,front-center,lfe
description = Surround 5.1 (HDMI)
priority = 2
direction = output
paths-output = hdmi-output-0

It works great (I can see 6 channels in pavucontrol or via "sound" in "settings"), but i got "duplicate stereo" and not real 5.1

If I made a speaker test, all tests makes sounds comes from the Front center speaker (and front R and L with less volume)... but not real 5.1 ....

Can we (and how ?) get 5.1 via HMDI with an ATI and free drivers ?

Fedora :: No Hdmi Sound On F15 / Get That?

Jun 7, 2011

Well almost no sound. The only way to get sound out is if i use the following command
speaker-test -D plughw:0,7 -c 2 /dev/urandom

I have the following line in /etc/pulse/default.pa
load-module module-alsa-sink device=plughw:0,7

But when i play any applications i hear no sound. For example "mplayer zion.mp3" results in silence.

When using pavucontrol, i see the sound bar moving for the hdmi hardware device. But i still hear nothing.

Does anyone know what could be wrong?

Ubuntu :: HDMI To Multiple (Really Only 3) TVs

Aug 4, 2010

I was looking for a solution to watch HDTV quality videos on multiple tv's. I have a cable run and cat5 run to each room and wanted a way to watch hidef movies in each room preferably synced. After much searching I'm coming to the conclusion that this will be hard and expensive no matter which route I want to go. I'm thinking my best route is to build a media converter and pipe that to each room.

I found a couple of HDMI input cards [URL] and [URL] that work in linux. Great with one of those I can get it to a computer signal and even get it on standard coax using a VGA2RCA converter and 1/8 inch to rca for audio hooked up to an old vcr set to channel 3 or 4. And for TV's that support hidef I can hook up computers at each to receive the video over gig ethernet.

So the question becomes what is a good app for sending and what is a good app for receiving. Is gig ethernet fast enough for 1080i? what about 1080p? Comcast has multiple hdtv channels over their coax; so how is it so hard to even encode one channel to an hdtv signal to watch on tv. Is there a way to encode the video to hdtv over the coax like comcast? So I can use the tv itself to watch the hdtv broadcast from my computer over the coax?

Ubuntu :: Can't Get Sound Out Of HDMI?

Sep 22, 2010

Can someone provide me with the exact instructions I need to backtrace pulseaudio? I have a bug that a developer is asking me to do a backtrace and the instructions on the ubuntu site aren't very good. I tried exactly what it said and my problem is that it says to "run the program under gdb by doing

gdb pulseaudio 2>&1 | tee ~/gdb-pulseaudio.txt

unfortunately pulseaudio isn't actually starting when I do this (I kill the program before I do this command, I also add the appropriate text file so pulse doesn't auto restart). Not sure what's going on but I'd appreciate any help as I can't get sound out of HDMI (I get it but it dies out fast).

I have searched endlessly on the issue and can't find any sort of a solution (apparently I'm the only linux user that has experienced this, all's that comes up is Windows forums telling me to wipe and reload)

Hardware :: Sound Over Hdmi Ati HDA?

May 11, 2010

For my mythtv/router box I'm trying to get the sound working trough hdmi as well as over the analog out. Because the HDMI is located on the mainboard and has something to do with the video driver I downloaded and installed the following:

ATI Catalyst™ 10.3 Proprietary Linux x86 Display Driver94.2 MB10.44/28/2010

However the output aplay -l is showing me(I got hdmi sound working on my laptop) isn't the same as on my laptop, it does not show the hdmi "sound card"

here is the output:

Code:

~$ aplay -l

I prefer sound trough hdmi but for the HDMI to work I previously needed to be able to see the HDMI device listed by aplay -l

Debian Multimedia :: Resolution Going From DVI To HDMI?

Aug 16, 2011

I recently switched from a DVI cable to a HDMI cable (from the motherboard to the monitor) on my desktop. Everything was working flawlessly with the DVI cable, but when i switched to the HDMI cable the resolution became altered in a strange way. According to both the 'Monitor Preferences' and 'NVIDIA X Server Settings' my resolution is 1920x1080. Both the mouse and some icons looks to be in that resolution. However, the gnome panels, the rest of the icons, toolbars, etc. are huge and in a low resolution. While using Iceweasel, the top gnome panel and the Iceweasel toolbars take up half my screen! I can't find a way to alter the size of these since my resolution is set to maximum. I thought it might be a problem with gnome, so I tried Fluxbox, but the same problems were there. Have anybody else come across this, or perhaps know of a solution?

card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: ALC283 Analog [ALC283 Analog]

but no HDMI

A lot of people recommend the following commands :

-sudo apt-get update
-sudo apt-get install oem-audio-hda-daily-dkms
and then reboot the device, but when ever i try and run it, the last step i get the "E: Unable to locate package oem-audio-hda-dkms" error.
