Apr 18, 2010Soon after I installed F12 I realized that I mixed / and /home partitions during the installation, resulting having an enormous / and a relatively small /home.
Since I want to avoid resizing the partitions*, is there any way to make Fedora use a certain amount of disk space on / as part of /home. Is this possible? And if it is, are there any drawbacks?
*I actually tried using a live usb but gparted wouldn't let me do any modifications. The volumes were unmounted though...
Ubuntu :: Data Lost When Merging Partitions / Resolve This?
May 28, 2011I had two ext4 partitions; one had data and another didn't. I wanted to merge them using Gparted, but couldn't find the option. So, I deleted the second partition making it unallocated and used the 'resize' option to merge both the partition. Now, the partitions are merged but I LOST THE DATA..
I am seriously f**ked up.... What can I do to get those data back. I haven't done anything to the partitions after data: no adding data, no formatting.

I didn't really know what I was doing during install and wound up leaving myself with over 100GB of unallocated hard drive space. if I create a new partition out of this, could I possibly merge it with another? and if I do, should I merge it with root or home? Jan 6, 2011I have what I thought was a simple task of creating ISO images of my Windows 7 system partion and boot partiton (the C drive) on my physical hard drive that I could use to load Windows 7 onto a virtual machine. Anyway, I'm running Ubuntu off the CD drive and I can see my drive partions (checked using the fdisk -l command). I have tried many iterations of the mkisofs command, but no matter what I do I get the error message: unable to open disk image file 'dev/sdb/win7sys.iso'. I don't understand why it's trying to open an ISO file it is supposed to be creating. The -o FILE option sets the output file name, so the message makes no sense to me. Below is an example of a simple and longer version with more options that I have tried to create an image of my sytem partiton (sda1) and save it on an external drive (sdb) with the file name: win7sys.iso (the next step I think would be to create or merge both partition images as one iso file for the VM). But I can't get past this error.
Can anybody tell me what I'm doing wrong?

* Note that the output after the -o parameter is the desired destination /dev/sdb (my external drive) for the image file and /dev/sda1 is my Windows 7 system or boot partition (sda2 is what Windows sees as the C drive).
General :: Deleting Hidden Partitions On USB Drive
Feb 19, 2010I recently bought a Buffalo 500GB ministation usb with "optional disk encryption". Turns out, I'm having one hell of a time trying to remove the "optional" from the drive. I figured I could just delete the program that is on the disk, and go on my way. That doesn't seem to be the case.
fdisk /dev/sdc1, then "p" showed that there were 4 partitions. So I deleted them one by one. "n" gave me a new partition. "t" I used 87 because I will be using it on windows. Then "w" to write everything.
mkfs -t ntfs /dev/sdc1 - all went well.
fsck -f -y /dev/sdc1 - all went well
Then I took the removed the drive and plugged into Windows only to find that the "optional" is still there. It actually creates a virtual drive with the "optional" software. So I tried it over again. I tried fdisk only to see that the partitions were back (as if they were never removed). I removed them again, and used primary partition as linux and wrote to disk. As a hunch, I checked permissions. Can't remember what it said, but I did change them.
chmod 777 /dev/sdc1
Then in a last hope of desperation, before coming to work today, I decided to dd the drive.
dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sdc1 bs=4k conv=notrunc
Is it possible that the "optional" stuff is actually hard coded onto a chip, or something inside the drive and I may never get rid of it?

Ubuntu :: Drive Failing And Need To Move Partitions?
Sep 14, 2010I have 2 500gb drives in my system. One of the drives I use for swap and home is failing, good thing it is under warranty... Bad thing I have to remove the drive from my system.
I have / on the first drive taking it all up. On the drive that needs replaced I have /swap and /home taking up the whole drive.
Is there a way to shrink /dev/sda to put swap and home on that drive and to move it back when new drive arrives? Or would it be simpler to just re-install to one drive?
Ubuntu :: Resizing Partitions Without An Optical Drive?
Apr 21, 2010I have this rather old Compaq Presario 2184 (Celeron processor), with a completely busted optical drive - which means I cant boot from Live CD, and it doesn't boot from USB, either... which means I cant use a live memory stick, either. It's currently running Xubuntu 9.04.
I'm seriously running short of space on my root partition - can't upgrade to 9.10...
I had a Windoze partiion that I decided to remove, using Gparted. Identified the NTFS partition, right click, delete. After that, I couldn't do anything else... I then found this page, that told me that I cant resize all partitions while booting from hard drive, and that I needed a Live CD. For the reasons mentioned above, that's just not possible...
Are there any alternatives that the good folks here can suggest? For example, can I create a new partition, and move my entire /usr there? It would solve the space problem, but I'm not confident of doing it without screwing up something... could someone kindly guide me through the process?
Fedora Installation :: Possible To Merge Partitions Into Single Drive
Jul 1, 2010My laptop has 80GB HDD Space, and sometime ago I installed fedora 13 inside windows with 15 gb space for it. Now, I have removed windows and the disk space is recovered. So the disk space is split up like this. 15GB for Linux + 42GB + 21 GB. I just want to know whether I can extend this 15gb so that the full of 80GB can be used without having to mount it. Or in other words can I remove the partition and make it into one single drive.

Mar 22, 2010I've had many installation issues that I won't go into here, and have had to reinstall several times. All I'm trying to do is get an XP installation dual-booting with 9.10.
1. My hard drive partitions are:
120 GB NTFS (with boot flag) for Windows
40GB EXT4 for 9.10 (/)
8GB Swap
The rest (around 220GB) EXT3 for /home
2. I install Windows, and during the windows partitioner it doesn't see the 3 other partitions on the drive, just the NTFS partition, which is odd. I install Windows on that partition, and confirm that I am able to do a cold boot into it.
3. I boot up a 9.10 CD, and all looks as it should. I install Ubuntu in the partitions as outlined above, and it doesn't have any issues.
4. I can now reboot into Ubuntu without issue. When booting into Windows, I get the startup screen with the blue "progress" ticker, which displays for about 2 seconds, then I get a BSOD. The message refers to making sure the hard drives are "partitioned and terminated correctly" and whatnot. If I didn't know any better (and I obviously don't), I'd accuse Ubuntu of bjorking my clean Windows install.
Ubuntu Installation :: 9.10 / 10.4 - No Hard Drive Partitions In Editor
May 1, 2010I'm working with an older PC that belongs to my parents. They've been using Ubuntu 8.04 with no problems, and with 10.4s release, I planned to upgrade them to the newest version. The system's specs are as follows:
1.5ghz Athlon XP CPU
1.5gb RAM (PC 2700)
20gb hdd (IDE)
I have tried both the Ubuntu 9.10 (two different discs) and a 10.4 install CD and both give me the same issue. The installation proceeds along swimmingly until partitioning comes up. The partition table simply shows no hard drives. I have heard of this issue occurring with SATA drives and motherboard settings, but what could make it happen to an old IDE drive? Any odd-ball motherboard settings or anything that might need to be changed? GParted and the Live disc (along with the currently installed version of Ubuntu) recognize drives and can navigate them. What gives?

May 17, 2010I just bought a new 2 TB hard disk to replace my old 175 gig one. I currently am dual-booting Lucid Lynx and Windows 7, and rather than go through the process of reinstalling both, then reinstalling all my programs, settings, and everything, I was wondering if there's a way I can just copy the partitions on my 175 GB disk to the new one, grow them to fill up the rest of the free space on the new 2 TB disk, and then plug that HD into the primary master plug on my motherboard... will that work?

I took 100 GB off of it to use as an Ubuntu drive. From that, I created the swap partition. Afterwards, I decided I wanted some more space for Ubuntu; so I took another 40 GB off of my Windows partition. Now I have 2 free space partitions. How can I combine them? It seems I'm only allowed to install Ubuntu on one or the other.

Hardware :: 3 SATA HDs Installed - Drive 2 Shows No Partitions In F12
May 2, 2010I have three sata drives installed in my machine. 1 is my boot drive, contains a windows install, and a linux install. All is well here. Drives 2 and 3 are simple fat32 volumes, I store my data on drive 2, and periodically sync it to drive 3. I do this simply for backup reasons. It was only recently that I setup this scheme. Previously I had all 3 drives in a fakeraid setup. Raid 5. I broke the array to set things up as I've described. All is well in windows, all 3 drives work as expected. However, in linux (fedora 12), drive 2 shows no partitions! If I do an fdisk -l, it shows sdb1, but if I attempt to mount it, I'm told that /dev/sdb1 does not exist, and in fact, /dev/sdb1 does NOT exist. sdc1 however, does exist, and is mountable.
A few things I've noticed with seem relevant.
Gnome reports a raid5 drive, which if I try to interact with it, fails.
Gparted shows sdb as a standard drive.
Dmesg shows the following, I've grepped out sdb and sdc for comparison, as they should be identical.

I did play around with mdraid while my array was apart, but I cant seem to find any method of testing sdb to see if something is somehow still configured on that drive. I've re-written the partition table, and even performed a low-level format on the drive, nothing seems to restore its function in linux.
Networking :: IPCOP Mount And Share Other Partitions On The Drive?
Oct 29, 2010I have a router running IPCOP with a 30 gig drive. I know the OS doesnt need that much space for a router. Can IPCOP mount and share out another partition on the same hard drive its installed on to my windows computers on my network?

Jan 9, 2010I've recently bought the "new" Macbook from Apple. It obviously came with OSX preinstalled. And I'm obviously not satisfied with the way it works, I also need a FAT32 partition so I can share my files between all three OS's. Tricky business. And I thought later on I might try and create me a nice LFS system to learn about Linux and show of to my mates. But doesn't a single hard drive only support up to 4 partitions? So off I went and got Ubuntu running besides Mac. It wasnt recognized by neither the default boot-loader nor rEFIt straight away. I had to hold alt to come up with the special BIOS or something every time I needed to use Ubuntu (always).
I got up to a point where I could run Ubuntu with wireless, sound and pretty much everything working. Until the kernel updates were installed. Somehow I (or maybe it) managed to screw up and booting had become impossible, for it would crash halfway through with kernel errors and other undefined weirdnesses. Meanwhile I had tried installing Windows 7 on a different partition. Which I found to be catastrophic also. I was forced to put up with OSX, which in my opinion is fine at what it does but it doesn't do very much for me. After a couple of tries I had to give up on fiddling with Ubuntu for I needed Windows 7 to run software for school. So my current partition layout looks like this......
Ubuntu :: Ext3 Partition : Fdisk Is Not Showing Any Partitions On The Drive?
Apr 24, 2010I had a 500gb hard drive that I wanted to use on my Ubuntu system as a media storage drive. The drive originally had two partitions on it,one was a Dell Recovery partition and the other was a Windows Vista partition. Using the Palimpsest Drive Utility that comes with Ubuntu, I deleted both partitions,created a Ext3 partition using 100% of the space and copied my data to the drive. After I finally got fstab to load the drive, I found another problem. First of all, when Grub loads, two options it offers are:
Windows Vista (loader) on sdc1
Windows Vista (loader) on sdc3
Aside from that, 100% of the drive is not being used by the Ext3 partition.It is showing 434.6gb available on the drive. Fdisk is not showing any other partitions on this drive, so A) why are the Windows loader options showing up under Grub and B) why do I not have 500gb available?Here is a copy of the output fdisk -l:

I can access them by navigating Places>Computer>"Drive_Name" but it would be more convenient. I was able to access them before, but something has apparently changed..

Apr 10, 2011So this is a two part question. My laptop came preinstalled with windows 7, I wanted ubuntu but needed windows to update my zune so I have both operating systems on my laptop. I only used windows for my zune, that was its sole purpose, now my zune is broken and I no longer need windows at all.
First, I downloaded about 20gb of music off of my zune and onto my windows partition, is there any way to transfer files like these from one partition to another? I don't know if that makes sense.
Second, can I unpartition my hard drive so it is purely ubuntu ** without losing all my ubuntu files and stuff **? If that wasn't clear, I want my laptop to just have ubuntu, I want the 40-some gb that I dedicated to windows back for ubuntu, and I don't want to lose all my files, settings, etc. that I already have on my ubuntu partition. Can this be done?
Debian Programming :: Automatic MKV Merging
Sep 13, 2014I want to make a little script/program/something that can organize my TV show collection. I'm italian, so I store for each episode the .mkv file and the .srt file. To let VLC automatic recognize the .srt file, I use the same name for the .mkv and the .srt.
That solution is quite optimal, but we can do better: a program that watches a directory and it's subdirectories and automatically runs mkvmerge if it detects files with the same name in the same folder.
I'm a Java programmer, so I can easily make a program that finds files with the same name and runs mkvmerge.... My problem is the directory listener. I found incron, but the problem is that it don't add the listeners to the subfolders of a folder.
Fedora :: Decrypting And Merging PDFs?

Too my surprise I find that each chapter of the textbook has it's own PDF file and that each one is encrypted. Is there anyway I can decrypt the PDFs and merge them all into one?
