Yet my touch-pad features works properly such as double tapping, triple tapping or scroll. Hardware :: ACPI / APM Setting In BIOS - Cannot Boot
Feb 11, 2010I recently put together a new machine with Ubuntu 9.10 I couldn't boot it even live (or any live distro for that). It wound up being either a ACPI or APM setting in the BIOS that got it to boot, I say either because I spent probably 10 hours in there turning things on and off until it worked. It was about 4am so my memory of it ain't that great. TO get up to date, I was adding a HDD and having some issues with it being detected right. So back in the BIOS I was and accidentally loaded the defaults! Now I can't figure out what I did last time I've been at it for hours with no luck.
If I jump into grub b4 it boots and add the acpi=off the system boots up but with the side effects of no pwr mgmt. I need it to be able to sleep and shut itself off. I've always had good luck with Ubuntu in other machines so I'm not that great in there, and honestly don't know the difference between apm/acpi. The MOBO is an ASUS P4C800 Deluxe, AMI Bios. I'm gunna keep at it in the mean time, if by any chance I figure it out I'll post what it was (after I write it down).

Aug 14, 2010Bios is a good recommendation but will that affect the fan speed? I know about the acpi=off option, this does not work properly- even on suse. Maybe noapic would work better? Really is there a cover all command line instruction (for all distros) to turn the annoying thing off? Main problem occurs when watching the telly and the screensaver kicks in, with suze it turns the sound off as well, even after you have re-entered the password

Dec 31, 2010I cannot get any fan information from 'lm-sensors' or 'sensors', I tried to run 'pwmconfig' and got this:

But I have no tools to control the fan speed from 'acpi'. in particular '/proc/acpi/fan' is an empty directory.
There are no fan info/controls in BIOS either.
I believe the fans do not work as fast as they should and I am trying to find a way to fix this before the cpu cores are melted down from overheating.

Feb 20, 2016 I was using Arch Linux and encountered an issue with dmraid because it thought my array was removable, which it wasn't. Without any answers or being able to revert to an older kernel, I gave up and switched to Debian, which read my array fine. However, today I updated Debian (sid) and got the 4.4.0 kernel, and the same problem came up... Right now, I'm still running 4.3.
According to this link:URL....the problem is clearly because of the kernel, though technically, the kernel isn't wrong. But unlike the people in that link, I don't have an option in my BIOS to disable hotplugging for my array.

Nov 7, 2010I have random X freezes (suddenly keyboard and mouse stop to react). Xorg.O.log is error and warnings free. The only problems I see in syslog/ dmesg are related to ACPI.

Jan 4, 2011I can get into the BIOS just fine but cannot find anything such as NX or Exucute Disable mode( on or off) Does anyone have any ideas? I contacted Acer support and they may be able to help only if I pay for their support. AS of now I have Ubuntu 10.4 installed and upgraded to 10.10 but have black screen with message about (NX) or Execute Disable in bios. The message says---This CPU is family 6, model 37, and has NX capabilities but is unable to use these protective features because the BIOS is configured to disable the capability. Please enable this in your BIOS. I have windows 7 professional on one partition and Ubuntu on the other partition. I can still access Ubuntu 10.4. but have the black screen on 10.10

In configuring CNC controller system, latency-test must be run to find maximum jitter of the system. It counts about 17,000 ns for few minutes, then it suddenly rise to 260,000 ns. It is impossible to control CNC with such large jitter.
In tracing this problem, I found that Award BIOS setting "Delay Prior to Thermal" is firmly engaged in making a problem. When I set this setting to 4 minutes, it makes large jitter periodically with exact 4min 15sec period. When I changed this setting to 8 minutes, its jitter is 8min 15sec period.
But, there is no option to disable this BIOS setting.
I heard that ACPI enabled OS can take over the ACPI function of the BIOS (which may include this "thermal" setting), but RTAI tuned kernel don't include ACPI modules.
Is there any solution to this problem ? If I recompile kernel with RTAI with ACPI processor module enabled, would it be a another problem maker ?

Feb 23, 2011I haven't been able to use linux for like 6 months I've tried Fedora 14, Debian Testing, Ubuntu 10.04 and now Mint KDE.
Whenever I boot any distro my laptop acts randombly, it gets to GDM and it freezes, or it lets me login and then freezes or works really slow, even through the shell.
The only thing I could figured is to insert acpi=off on the boot commands googling around, and there it boots.
My problem is that it gets overheated, I can't use any porcessor policy and I can't suspend my laptop with that boot line.

Dec 26, 2009My openSuse install can't boot/login with ACPI enabled. I disabled ACPI and have been using it for a while, but would like to get ACPI working.
When I did the install from the livecd it would hang when loading the kernel. I would see the progress indicator get to 99% and then my computer froze. I disabled ACPI from the options and was able to install.
But I never got any error messages or any other output so I don't know what module was causing the problem when being loaded.

Jan 3, 2010I have to use acpi=off because my PC is crushing/freezing during installation and 2 mins after boot up. Currently I'm using acpi=ht to enable second CPU.
The problem is that my Intel graphic card is slow and Xorg is taking a lot of CPU.
I'm also not able to enable compiz when disabling acpi. The biggest problem is the MythTV that is so slow in the menu area alone that I'm not watching any TV in it lately.
When I'm not, it's crushing, no CPU spikes, no strange behavior just crushing without any logs.
Ubuntu 8.10 was running well on the box.

Dec 4, 2010I've installed 10.10 on a laptop and everything is working except for suspend. The laptop will go into suspend, but will not wake up. I have to hard reboot to recover. From my research it appears to have something to do with ACPI and I would like to switch to APM. However all the instructions I found for doing this seem to apply to older versions of Ubuntu before the switch to Grub2 so there is no menu.lst file to make changes to. So I'm looking to understand how to switch to APM in 10.10?

Mar 12, 2010I have a Toshiba Satellite L505D-GS6000 it had windows7 on it when I bought it new. Needless to say windows just ran too slow. The only Ubuntu distro that would boot up was Karmic 9.10. I had to append the phrase acpi=off to get the live ISO to boot I had to type acpi=off after the word splash. I saw it would boot so I installed it as the only OS on this computer.
Now when I boot up I am hitting the power button once and the back on again to get to the grub. I hit the E key use my arrows down to the word splash type acpi=off. Then hit CTRL X to boot up. How do I put this permanently into Grub2.

Jul 22, 2010I'm trying to configure the critical trip points on a bunch of servers so they will shut down automatically if they get too hot. Problem is, acpi doesn't seem to see any of the sensor data and /proc/acpi/thermal_zone is empty. Oddly enough, when I run "sensors," I get info back. Also, i2c and acpi appears to be installed according to modprobe and dpkg.

Sep 11, 2010Since 2.6.31 kernel there has been need for ACPI drivers to get hwmon information (If one is not willing to get it old way). I have atk0110 module working well on my Asus mobo, but I haven't been able to figure out how to get same information from MSI K8N Neo4 motherboard. I guess asus_atk0110 module with Asus mobo is the one that does the trick and naturally it won't work on MSI mobo so does anyone know how to get hwmon information through ACPI with my MSI mobo?
