I have changed to Debian 5.0 on this old Gateway box, and the video is the GeForce NV34 FX-5200. I set it up with a Dell monitor and everything works great, I have several screen resolutions avail. But now I changed to the Samsung SyncMaster 731N and now I have only 2 resolution choices. 600x400 and 800X600. Besides move back to the Dell, how can I get the card to work with the monitor?

I just finish installing 11.3. Everything works perfectly expect few issues with my display setting. I've installed SUSE on my laptop Acer Aspire 5920G and I got Samsng 226BW as my second display. How can I change the resolution of my Samsung display to 1680*1050? currently set as 1024*768 and I can't change it. View 1 Replies View RelatedMy current system (Dell Optiplex 260, 2.8 GHz CPU, 1.5 Gig RAM, Nvidia Geforce 5200 AGP, HannsG HX190 through DFP) was running Kubuntu 9 perfectly, but was lost due to a disk crash and a flawed backup. Rather than trying to fix a badly damaged system, I decided to go straight to 10. Installation went smoothly until I tried to activate tvout, which again worked perfectly under K9. Now, xserver goes into a start crash/loop and the system must be shut down using the power switch. While looping, the TV does seem to briefly go into graphics mode, but the monitor stays dark. The only way to get the system running again is to comment out the 'Screen 1' clause of the 'Section Serverlayout' in the xorg.conf. I even tried restoring the xorg.conf that ran fine under K9, same problem.
Here's the xorg.conf that the Nvidia Server Setting app generates:

I've a Samsung SyncMaster 943, widescreen I also have a GForce 8400 GS This monitor supports (as seen on website) a 1440*900 resolution. I've installed the nvidia driver (from homepage) with version 195.36.24 The NVidia X Server Settings shows only a 1360*768 as max possible resolution. I've installed my mythbuntu 9.10 and the ati driver 9.11 via DVI connection to the monitor and all work correctly. Today I bought an HDMI cable because I want to use only this cable to send video and sound to the monitor and as so I connected via HDMI and I started the PC. After the computer starts, it showed correctly the booting information and mythtv but as soon as I exited from mythtv to use the pc as a desktop I found that the chars, the icons as so on were very big. I've tried to run the Ati contol center and the resolution of the monitor was correctly 1680x1050. I've tried to restart the computer with the DVI and all come back to usual, so I tried to switch off the monitor unconnet the DVI and connect again the HDMI and when I switched on the monitor the display was again ok. After a restart of the system the situation was the one I've told before (big chars, etc.).
View 2 Replies View RelatedI upgraded my system to ubuntu 10.04 last night. After the process completed, I restarted my system and there were 2 problems:
1. No flash plugin was found and adobe could not find one on their site.*
2. my flatscreen monitor (Samsung syncmaster 2333) was detected, but the display is fuzzy. I have tried lowering the resolution but this does not work. Is there a fix for this?
Alternately, is it possible for me to revert back to 9.10? I am a Linux novice and I'd rather stick with what works, even if it means I am a release behind.
I have a MacBook Pro 5,2 with the Mini-DisplayPort for external video. I have the displayport-VGA adapter which works (albeit sometimes at an unideal resolution) with an array of projectors, LCDs and other stuff. Everything except for my nice Samsung SyncMaster 2433. When I plug it in, I get the weird rainbow screwed up look with only the far left hand column looking normal and the rest looking like I've got the wrong refresh rate or something. However, the same setup works when I boot from Karmic to OS X. Note this also didn't work in Jaunty. I'm using the NVidia 185.18.36.
It also did not work through a KVM switch (long shot) but oddly the "Monitor Out" works when I run this monitor through my Dell projector. if I unplug the projector and then plug the monitor in directly without rescanning for displays, the monitor continues to work.
I've read about a half a dozen threads now on various problems such as mine but haven't found a solution which worked. I recently purchased a new LCD screen which has a native resolution of 2048x1152. After I plugged it in via DVI cable windows 7 picked up on the new display immediately and adjusted my resolution, but when I booted into Ubuntu I don't see either the circle thingy (initial splash screen), I don't see the Ubuntu with the slider deal flashing, and I don't ever get to the desktop. The hard drive is not active and all that happens is I see a flashing cursor then even that goes away after a second or so. I can get to Ubuntu's desktop if I boot to the recovery mode, login, then run "gdm", then it starts up just fine and defaults to the native resolution of my new monitor. How can I fix it so I don't have to do that?

I just got a Samsung SyncMaster T260HD monitor. It works straight out of the box with Windows but I can't seem to get it to work with Linux, which is my primary OS for day to day work.
The computer boots up but when going into graphical mode on Linux the monitor gives me a "Mode not supported" error and doesn't display anything.
I booted up windows and, using PowerStrip, grabbed the exact ModeLine that should be used to get the equivalent setting in Linux and added it to my xorg config file but it doesn't seem to help. the ModeLine is:

I'm running Scientific Linux 5.4 (clone of Redhat Enterprise Linux 5.4) but I've tried booting with a recent Linux Mint Distro as well as Ubuntu 9.04 and had the same problem.
just installed slackware 13.37... i did a bit of configuration by myself but im having trouble making my graphics card running correctly under X.I installed the latest drivers correctly from the nvidia website.

I was given a Samsung SMB 2330 (TFT) monitor for Christmas. It is pretty nice and nice and big. Here is the problem: when I connect it to my laptop (Dell XPS M1530 with nVidia GeForce 8600M) I can use the Nvidia Settings Manager to view and use both screens, but on the Samsung screen there are lighter colored blurry lines that race up and down. You don't see this so much on lighter windows, but any darker color shows them clearly. This is a constant whether I set the refresh rate on "auto" or 60 kH (which is what the manufacturer says it should be).I can't for the life of me figure out how to get rid of this problem. I am fair to middling on my Linux experience, but this is the first time I have wrestled with dual monitors and I'd really appreciate any pointers The screen is great, but the flicker is distracting to say the least.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI bought a Samsung 2033HD monitor and I connected it to my PC (ubuntu lucid) with the D-Sub cables (the blue ones). When I switch to the "PC" source (the screen supports also television) a blue notice reading "No signal" appears for a few seconds, followed by a black screen.
The screen isn't broken: I tried it on a laptop with windows XP and it worked fine!

With both 1600 x 1200 and 1680 x 1080 I get the resolution but I see lots of shadowing.(The letters are not crisp) Do I need to upgrade any driver ?

I have a problem with resume from ram on my hardware. I tried to install Karmic Alternate and Lucid Alternate (command line only). After resume I have no screen and the monitor is off. I also tried different pm-quirks, in combination too. I tried to install the nouveau driver on lucid but then the monitor is always off. I guess to install the nvidia-driver is no solution for a command line system?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have the nVidia GeForce 8500 GT 512MB graphics card, I put it in my system to get a speed boost and for a dual monitor setup, I don't have the proprietary drivers installed I tried installing them, and when I did it asked for reboot, so I did, and when it came back up only one monitor was in use, and it was running very very sluggish, so I opened up the Monitors from the settings and it said to use nVidia's thing, so when I did, I enabled the second monitor, and hit apply, and it asked for a restart of Xorg, doing that came back telling me that no monitors were find, and a reboot brings me straight to tty1... I tried both the recent version and the older one, both did the same thing, I really wanna get my Compiz effects back. is there a way to get this working? I will do anything you ask if it solves the problem...

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm a newbie to installing LINUX (was an Oracle DBA for many years) and I am having trouble getting the dual head function to work with my Sony Vaio laptop. I just select a generic LCD with the screen resolution that I want, but when I startx, I briefly get the login window (terminal), then everything goes blank and I have to unplus the samsung monitor and reboot to be able to have a screen again. I have tried the fn + f keys and that doesn't help.

I recently purchased a cheap computer to use for everyday tasks. It came pre-loaded with Windows 7. The monitor I am using is a Vizio VX20L. It's native resolution is 1366X768. I have no problem with the screen resolution in Windows 7 but in Ubuntu, I am having some issues. I have the propriatary Nvidia driver installed in Ubuntu but for some reason I cannot get the screen resolution right. I am currently using a resolution of 1360x768 and the right part of my desktop is not on the screen.
I have tried to adjust the screen size using the monitor settings, but I still cannot get the whole screen to show up. If I set the resolution to Auto in the NVIDIA X Server Settings, it defaults to 1280X1024 and I can see my whole desktop, but it is streeeeetched. First off, let me say: I'm a long time Linux hobbyist and recently installed Fedora 12. I've been looking (some say "lurking") around these forums for a bit after I loaded it up and let me say: Leigh, You're an amazing young man! Keep up the great work! I've a question: I've just put together a hobby computer: Pentuim 4, with 1 Gig of RAM and a Nvidia Geforce5700LE. When I install Fedora from a fresh install, everything works great: nice screen resolution, good graphics, etc. but no 3d or acceleration, so I'm very limited on my programs.
So I decided I need to upgrade my Nvidia driver. I followed Leigh's Nvidia setup guide after installing Fedora 12 (all four steps!) everything seemed to go fine, but when I reboot, I quickly see the Nvidia splash screen, but the screen then goes blank. Well, not really blank, I can see what appears to be a kind of cross-hatch pattern, plus I can see what should be my mouse cursor on screen (it also is a square shaped pattern). I suspect it may be at a screen resolution that my monitor doesn't support. Once there, the computer pretty much doesn't do anything else. Usually I can break into the x driver loading and go to the command prompt, but this latest time I can't even do that.
I've been trying to get it to work on my laptop off and on for several years now, experimenting first with Redhat (version 6.1, I think) and now trying with Ubuntu 9.04. I've done a full install using the entire hard drive (no dual boot). So I'm trying it for real this time. I'm having a problem with my video drivers. The video is ok (not great) and I don't seem to have any options to adjust it.
When I go into system > preferences > display, I see monitor "unknown", set at 1024x768 with a 75 Hz refresh. If I click on "detect monitors" nothing happens. It says under system > administration > hardware drivers that "no proprietary drivers are in use on this system". I've got two options:

For the first part of boot, I have access, but then when it comes up into Ubuntu, the big monitor (a Dell 2500, I think, plugged into the stock Toshiba docking station via DVI) quits working, and all I have is a dim picture (dark, like something's sapping power from it) on the laptop display.....

View 1 Replies View RelatedToday I received as a gift a 5 years old Gateway 500X CPU which is apparently dead due to a faulty motherboard (I still have to troubleshoot it, of course).
Even in the cause I can fix it, odds are I'll prefer to make the aforementioned CPU a donor for my other machines, instead of resurrecting an old Pentium 4 (no HT) system.
Being this the case I checked the parts for possible transplants:
512MB DDR PC2700 memory module (useful right off the shelf for my main desktop system).
120GB Maxtor IDE hard drive (also useful, assuming it is in working order).
128MB AGP8X NVIDIA GeForce4 MX440 graphics card.
On this last part (the graphics card) I have my doubts as of where to use it. My main desktop system already has an NVIDIA card: FX5200, 128MB, which is newer. The thing is that I've been doing some homework comparing both the MX440 and the FX5200 and get mixed opinions: for one thing the FX5200 is the latest of the two with some advantages like support for a later DirectX (which for Linux is pointless) and other things, but the FX5200 is also reported to be technically inferior to the MX440.
In your opinion/experience which card is a better performer? Should I expect a performance gain if I were to replace the FX5200 with the MX440?
I have a syncmaster 171v, 17 inch monitor which is pretty nice, except that it auto-shuts off after every 2 minutes. Only associated drivers I have found at samsung are for magictune which seems to only work for a 'certain' list of video cards. me not having one for my ubuntu machine. When i plug it into my XP machine (which has one of the special cards, (AGP, ugh), it seems to work, but haven't tested out the long duration.
My current fix for the problem right now is taking the power cord out and plugging it back in. All the buttons on the monitor will not respond after the auto shut off of a whole two minutes. Seems i have a pretty useless monitor if it only works for my old XP machine, and im getting really tired of unplugging it and plugging it back in.
so I've got a openSuse 11.3 machine with KDE. As graphic card I've got a 9500GT and as display a syncmaster 570b. Now both work fine with other products (9500GT works fine on my other display and my Windows laptop works fine with the syncmaster 570). I also installed nvidia drivers via yast2. But how do I change the frequency? I've been trying to solve the problem for hours. Oh yeah when I connect my 570b to my 9500gt, I sometimes get a picture and sometimes don't. However when I get a picture colors are very strange and it flickers hardly.
Why should I concern myself only with a graphical front end rather than learning APT or RPM? Or are those really, really hard to learn?
