Hardware :: Desktop Environment "shifts" After Screensaver?

My wife would like to wipe her computer and "start over." She's had XP on it for years, but to my delight she asked if I could try Ubuntu and see if it would work. I tried out the Lucid Live CD and everything worked well, except for this one problem.The entire GNOME desktop environment was shifted "downward." I could not see the bottom panel, and the top panel was unusually "tall." I had to click above the "Applications" menu to actually display the drop-down menu.I changed the screen resolution, which fixed the issue. I changed it back to the original setting and everything was normal.When the screen goes blank or to a screensaver, however, the problem returns.I'm not sure I can provide a screenshot as this is all from the Live CD.
Have an issue and not sure what or how it is caused.See attached screenshot.Whole Desktop shifts to half screen except menu bar and freezes.Menu functions and visible icons function but can not see the other half of my desktop. I installed Gnome desktop environment recently then ;I' ve lost KDE desktop effects settings. I just can see Compiz Configirator. I cant configure effects independently. There is same settings in gnome and kde. And also I cant change windows appearence.
a server at work has been accessed through the desktop environment as root. I know this is a risk and since I have never done it before I was wondering if there are any files created by the desktop that could compromise the system and how could I clean it up.
My screen saver crashes.Even trying to look at the screensaver in the desktop settings crashes.The crashhandler says "This backtrace appears to be of no use. This is probably because your packages are built in a way which prevents creation of proper backtraces, or the stack frame was seriously corrupted in the crash. System configuration startup check disabled.
I know, minor problem. But on an otherwise clean and fresh looking desktop, that small shift down tends to throw off my chi. Also, it does tend to get in the way a bit, such as obscuring my options button in Chrome, rather than just taking up a bit of unused space on my tabs bar. Wasn't having this issue with 10.04, but started happening immediately after upgrade.Example of what I'm talking about:
I need a locked 'screensaver' that shows the real background/desktop (icons and open windows) so that my boss can see what I was working on, but my peers can't mess with it. All the Ubuntu screensavers as far as I can tell either manipulate pictures or do some 3D/2D graphics.
There's an OSS screensaver on windows that I love called PixelCity (links:blog post, github). it's pretty cool. and it runs fine on my Ubuntu (Karmic 9.10) with wine.Is there a way I can tell the gnome-screensaver about it so I can use it as one of my screensavers? I'm still fairly new to Gnome and the whole "screensavers as themes" thing is still confusing me.I've found my themesdir and tried to create a .desktop file for it, but obviously I've gotten something wrong as it just doesn't show when I open the screensaver prefs dialog, no error, no message, it's just not there.
Installing the xscreensaver packages added the extra screensavers I was missing, and I'm a pixelcity away from perfection..Of course the perfect solution would be if someone ported the screensaver natively to linux, which shouldn't be too hard as the source is open, it already runs on openGL and tries to confine most windows stuff to a single file. But I don't know C++ or 3D code or win/linux internals so I wouldn't know where to start..
what best desktop environment for a pentiun iii 1GHz, 256 Mb RAM and 64 Mb of video card. Like Gnome, KDE, Fluxbox, Openbox, Blackbox, XFCE or other, don't care if have or not menus or docks, I need it became fast and can see videos not in slow-motion.
I'm sure you will laugh at me, however I do have to ask : is there a desktop environment at all in Jessie installation CD 1 , I mean the one I've downloaded here [URL].... , and to be precise this one [URL].... .
I've installed it in a virtualbox thinking that I'd see a Gnome desktop (assuming it is the default one and seeing that nothing was specified in the CD name), but there is no graphical environment at all, it boots to a console: dpkg -l finds no desktop components and there is no default display manager in /etc/X11 (of course startx only gets me another terminal, probably xterm) .
It should not be a virtualbox issue because the LXDE version there runs OK, I'm just a bit puzzled that no desktop environment at all is apparently installed even if I'm positive that I've checked that option during the installation: I've installed this CD without a network connection, but nevertheless, if the installer says "install a desktop environment" that's what I'm expecting to find...
I don't remember such an issue with Wheezy, in fact I only used CD 1 and there was indeed a Gnome desktop after installation - it's not a big deal, I'd just like to know if this is normal.
Initially I have A system with XP sp3,1GB RAM and 250GB Hard Disk,Intel Dual Core Processor 1.8GHz. After I Installed Fedora10 with dual booting option. Till now everything is fine.. After I updated the Fedora10 to Fedora 12. Fedora 12 is hanging in 3d Desktop Environmnet.It is working well in normal Desktop environment..
i got my fedora 12 cd today. only thing is, i got the KDE version instead of the gnome version, which i want for software compatibility reasons. if i install the KDE version, how do i go about uninstalling the KDE and switching over to gnome
How do you change the GDM theme? Also how do I switch desktop environment. I installed both kde and gnome with the installer but at the login screen there is no sessions button
I would like to install opensuse 11.2 on my children's new pc with nvidia 7025 graphic onboard card. which desktop environment is better between kde or gnome? I haven't a preference yet but I wolud like to install a light graphic system that can be used by a child of 5 yo.
Now I know this is an Ubuntu forum, but my question is really for Linux distros in general. An obvious newbie to linux, I was just wondering if I could change the default desktop environment that comes with distros: for example Ubuntu comes with GNOME. There is a way to change that to something like, for example, xfce or Openbox right? Or are these environments set for each distro?
I have a shell I have written in C# for Windows. I have ported it over to Linux (Ubuntu) and it works well as an app running under Gnome.
What I would like to know is how to use the shell I have written instead of Gnome? What I want is a way of booting straight into my custom shell without the default desktop environment loading.
I am a different distribution Linux user but considering to install Ubuntu Server 9.10 to run my personal website.
Question about Ubuntu Server version - does it come with some desktop environment like Gnome or KDE? I would be running Ubuntu Server on my home machine so it would be a nice bonus if I could use it to browse internet or check email.
I know you can install the Kubuntu desktop in ubuntu via synaptic. But as many of you well know this also installs a whole bunch of KDE programs and such like. Is there a way just to install the desktop environment?
I just updated today my ubuntu from 10.04 to 10.10. All worked ok until I rebooted my computer. After that, it showed me the terminal window instead of the desktop environment i had. I tried to reinstall ubuntu_desktop, but nothing.
I recently upgraded from 10.04 to maverick(desktop edition). the problem is my netbook edition environment is not working properly.. can any1 tell me how to reset/reinstall the packages for netbook environment?
Last night I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.10 and ran into some problems. I can only work in the desktop GUI in safe mode, the regular Desktop environment loads up rarely. Here is some hardware info:

I'm running a regular installation of Ubuntu 10.10 with Gnome.I would like to try LXDE and other desktop environment,BUT without installing the entire Lubuntu.Last time I tried something like that,I installed the kubuntu-desktop package which came with a ton of software I didn't want.I couldn't even remove it easily, so I followed a tutorial which made me remove some of the software I had BEFORE messing with KDE.So what I'm asking is simple-is there a standalone package that installs nothing but another desktop environment? I also want to be able to remove it with a simple apt-get remove.
I have an older IBM P3 laptop im running ubuntu on. And im wondering if there's a way to change the desktop environment to one which would use less system resources. Im currently running the default. I've used other distros way back in the day that would allow you to use KDE. Can KDE be installed and would this be a better option for an older computer?
I own a VPS (Virtual Private Server) and I would like to install a desktop environment on it. After installing the desktop enviroment, I would like to install a VNC server on the VPS, after that I would like to be able to configure the VNC server remotely via SSH and then log in using VNC to connect to that VPS. Is that possible? The reason I wanted to do that is because I want to use their internet connection to browse the web, their speed is like 6 times faster than mine because they have backbone which I can't afford.
