Hardware :: Cheap RAID Card To Be Monitored From System?
Apr 24, 2010
I'm looking for a PCI RAID card that will support 4 SATA disks in RAID 5.
Essentially it must be possible to monitor the raid from the Linux operating system (FC10+), I will not have physical access to the machine most of the time, so I need to be able to talk to the RAID card from Linux (like the 3Ware one does), It is possible to get reasonably priced RAID cards that can be monitored from Windows.

I have about 60 old PC's that have an 8X AGP slot. What used/old AGP video cards are there that are supported, that are cheap and will provide a 1280x768 (or there abouts) for a generic lcd wide screen display?I've seen several Dell nVidea 5200 w/64mb AGP cards for under $10.

I am looking to build a new desktop. What is the lowest end video card that will fits the following:
Supports 2 monitors at 1920x1200 or 1600x1200
Works with Linux.
3d performance isn't much of an issue, since I don't play computer games. I use the computer mostly for programming, which is why I like having the large resolution, so I don't have to scroll around so much.

Here is my system: I have dell poweredge 1950 PERC 6 with 300 GB raid system. It has two disks of each 300GB RAID mirrored system. I have few applications and data that reached around 280GB. As you know, poweredge 1950 we can have only two disk.
They are not mission critical. Hence, I wanted to remove the raid system and use as a non-raid system. By doing it, The applications and data can grow upto 600GB. I do not want to loose the data and setup. I am not so clear about RAID system and its conversion.

I have two 1TB hard drives in a RAID 1 (mirroring) array. I would like to add a third 1TB drive and create a RAID 5 with the 3 drives for a 2TB system. I have ubuntu installed on a separate drive. Is it possible to convert my RAID 1 system to a RAID 5 without losing the data? Is there a better solution?

Have configured squid in routing server and it works fine. Able to block sites and allowed all http request to pass through squid so able to monitor http traffic. And the downloads from linux machine like wget, ftp, etc.. and from windows download manager cannot be monitored which is drawback right now. In squid is it possible to allow ports like ssh, ftp etc so that it can also be monitored? If so need some spark ideas on it.

I have a box that doesn't have a Raid controller or a software raid running currently. I would like to make it a RAID 1. Since it seems there isn't any IDE RAID controllers hardly around, I have another HD that is the exact model as the drive currently in the box running CentOS. Can I some how add the second drive and get the box to mirror from here own out? The box gets really hot and I want to be ready for a HD failure.

In Ubuntu, How can you tell if your connection is being monitored? Have a home system, me and girlfriend are only users. Lately ALLl websites are taking longer to download. She claims her system and bank accounts were compromised. So am wondering if the connection is being monitored. Lots of tools for "windows" to help determine, but what about linux / ubuntu?

my computer has been surely hacked for at least more than two months; my private information are being hacked and spread around! I initally used Windows Vista and I had the firewall off and no antivirus software. When I realized that my OS had been hacked, I began turning my firewall on and installing security softwares, but nothing stopped the hack.
Yesterday, I erased all my partitions and installed Ubuntu 10.10. I installed rkhunter and a firewall. I changed my static IP adress, at least for the sake of knowledge, to another one, then I got disconnected since my router only allows my old IP.
When I'm about to write my admin password, I disconnect from the network. I've scanned my system using rkhunter, and the result is a list of 30 suspicious files!
Can I adjust my router in a way that it can allow any IP adress? If yes, can I have a non-static IP adress? How to prevent the hacking in the first place? However, I believe, I don't know yet, that my Ubuntu has also been hacked...
If I can't get rid of the hacker(s), then I should permanently disconnect from internet and find another way to receive information anonymously through the internet.

I have (had) Debian Testing running on a 250GB IDE hard drive, partitioned normally.
I also have 4x 1TB drives in a raid 5 using mdadm, and 2x 500GB drives in a raid 1 also with mdadm.
I put the two arrays in lvm using:
I then used "lvcreate" to make storage/backup 300GB, and the rest went to storage/media (approx. 2TB usable). I put an xfs filesystem on both and mounted them.
All was working fine until the system drive shorted out and died on me this morning. As far as I can tell, all my other drives and everything else is fine. I do a daily rsnapshot of the filesystem, which of course is residing on storage/backup (stupid, I know). So I have full backups of everything, but I'll have to put a new hard drive in and reinstall Debian before I can restore everything.
I've reinstalled before and simply reassembled mdadm arrays and remounted them before with no problems, but this is the first time I've used lvm, so I'm not sure what I have to do to restore everything. Is it as simple as reinstalling the system then doing a:

I have a DL380 G3 HP server and I need to attach a 1TB hard drive. Of course the server only accepts SCSI and since I don't have a few thousand pounds to splash about I am looking at alternate methods. What I have done so far is buy a PCI SATA raid card and attach the 1TB drive to it. The BIOS seemed to be playing nice detecting it and allowing me to select the card. But it wont see the drive.
Funnily enough though when I installed Linux on the SCSI drive during the install it saw the 1TB just fine and I could write to it. This has led me to believe that I could use GRUB (installed on the SCSI) to boot the 1TB as the hardware setup is working but the BIOS just can't handle it. So here I am with no real knowledge of GRUB. I was hoping someone could tell me where to begin with this and if it is even possible

Could any RAID gurus kindly assist me on the following RAID-5 issue?I have an mdadm-created RAID5 array consisting of 4 discs. One of the discs was dropping out, so I decided to replace it. Somehow, this went terribly wrong and I succeeded in marking two of the drives as faulty, and the re-adding them as spare.
Now the array is (logically) no longer able to start:
mdadm: Not enough devices to start the array.Degraded and can't create RAID ,auto stop RAID [md1]
I was able to examine the disks though:
Code:
root@127.0.0.1:/etc# mdadm --examine /dev/sdb2
/dev/sdb2:
Magic : a92b4efc
Version : 00.90.00
code....
Code:
mdadm --create --assume-clean --level=5 --raid-devices=4 /dev/sda2 /dev/sdb2 /dev/sdc2 /dev/sdd2
As I don't want to ruin the maybe small chance I have left to rescue my data, I would like to hear the input of this wise community.

I have a laptop running Ubuntu (not the problem) and I want to connect to a FTP server. Filezilla works really well and so does good old ftp. But, the FTP server I need to connect to will only accept connections from a white-list of addresses. My office IP is static and is on the list. Thus, connecting to this FTP server from the office is a piece of cake. But, I want to connect to this FTP server from home. Connecting to it directly from home is impossible because I have a dynamic IP address here at the house (surprise) so we can't just add my home IP address to the list.
Fortunately, I have full admin rights on the network at my local office and I installed cygwin on the Windows 2008 server. I can successfully connect to it using ssh. That gets me half way there. I can securely connect to a machine that is allowed to talk to the FTP server. I'm half way there. Now I want to figure out how to forward my ftp port over ssh through the server at the office and to the FTP server that I really want to connect to.I've tried various incantations of ssh and I can't seem to come up with the right combination. Anyone have any experience doing something like this? In affect, I want to use ssh as a simplistic proxy and it need only really handle a single port.

I changed something in the BIOS which causes a kernel panic, if my card is installed (Ultra ATA/133 PCI-to-ATA Host Controller). I had it working fine til a month ago, when I installed some Linux on a HD on that card. That booted fine too, and I did some disk switching. Still all was well, but yesterday I tried to boot XP (2nd IDE master)(GRUB is Ubuntu/2nd IDE slave), and XP wouldn't load. I clicked here, and clicked there, and now XP and Ubuntu boot, ONLY if the RAIDbus card is Out. Put the card in, and I get a kernel panic/lockup. This HAS to be a BIOS function - nothing is different on the disks, including GRUB menu.
