$X contains only other folders so I dont have to worry about regular files but any kind of more "advanced" solution would work.

Oct 4, 2009I've compiled my own code as root (long story why) anyway I now need to switch this to a normal user to compile. So I did a simple copy/paste (using gnome/debian lenny) to my home/user. I then logged in as used to see the folders with a padlock and permissions for root only. So I logged back in as root, change permissions to the used, check they were all ok, logged back in as user, and it still says owner root, even thought when I log in as root it shows user as owner.

Jan 4, 2011I have a shared folder set up that allows all users on the computer to have access to all the music on the computer. In the folder with all the music the group 'music' has permission to add and delete files and all users are members of 'music'. This should allow all users to have complete access to these files, however, when I add files to the folder they retain their original permissions and do not take on the permissions of the folder. I could change the permissions of the files to reflect the folder every time I add a cd. But that is annoying. What I am wondering is if there is any way to make files automatically reflect the permissions on the folder they are moved into.

I have also tried several variations. I left ScriptAlias at the default "/var/www/cgi-bin" and I have tried it with AllowOverride None and without the +ExecCGI after Options. I am getting a 404 error when a form has an action directed at a cgi script that is in cgi-local.

May 27, 2010People usually suggest workarounds to do this, as it's not possible with usermod while the user is logged in. Did I overlook anything or is this method not preferable over creating a new account, setting the user permissions, then moving the files and messing with the file permissions? Using the right tool for the job would seem to be less error-prone to me. 1. Activate the root account by setting a password.

2. Log out and log into the root account.
3. Change the username and home directory from user1 to user2. This will also move the files to the new home directory and rename the group to user2.

Apr 7, 2011I have a dual-boot win7 and Ubuntu 10.10 and I want Ubuntu to use my windows user folder as home. I edited fstab to give me ownership and mount it to /mnt/Windows at startup but whenever I change the location of home in the Users and Groups it acts like it is changing it but it never does. I close the settings and when I re-open it, it is set back to /home/me.

Jul 12, 2010Is there a way to have a directory automatically change the permissions of a file that is written to it? I have a program which saves files to a directory, and gives those files read-only permissions to members in the group. This is a problem, because other users of my computer need to be able to edit these files. The directory itself has rw permissions for group members.
I guess what I am looking for is a way for the directory permissions to "override" the permissions the program is trying to save the files as. For example, if the directory has "rw" permissions for the group, then any file saved to it will automatically get the same permissions, regardless of what the program writing the file is trying to do.

Jun 29, 2010From what I have understood, trying out different Linux distros is one of those things that a Linux user just needs to do now and again.
So what is the "best" way of keeping your home folder intact? Should I just copy the whole home folder to a separate storage space, install a new distro (I'm thinking going from Ubuntu to Suse) and then just past it in the newly installed distro? Or are there some other, more "refined" methods?
I thought one's home folder contains a lot of config and settings files, but they would surely just be applicable to the original distro!?
I know I can try out several distros via live CDs, which I have done, but when you've taken that next step and actually want to install another distro as your main Linux operating system.

Mar 5, 2011recently I downloaded warzone 2100. It was downloaded in tar.gz format. I searched for the way to install it and I am not able to install it. I unzipped the folder and then changed my directory to the unzipped folder. After that I used ./configure. After doing this, when I write make, it gives error and says no make file found. For example, I have a Projects directory and I noticed that there is a special 'projects' directory icon available in my icon theme; I think that it would be nice to use that icon instead of the default directory icon.Google informs me that the file ~/.config/user-dirs.dirs can be edited to give certain directories special properties, including special icons. However, all my changes to the file get reverted after restarting my computer. Is there a way to make changes to user-dirs.dirs permanent?
