Will this procedure work?First I'll burn an iso image of the windows C: to a CD or DVD, using the Win XP computer. Then, I'll load a (live Ubuntu), from my thumb drive and boot into my new PC, and move the Ubuntu partition to another location, in order to create the partition needed to install a Windows OS. I know that Windows, God bless them, needs to be first on the HDD. This procedure will destroy the grub loader. Then rebooting should load correctly to the grub bootloader, right?

I have a Dell Precision 330 with (the latest) A09 BIOS and 1 TB SATA hard drive. There is a SATA-IDE converter between the SATA HD and the ATA133 cable. The OS was Window XP Professional SP3.
When adding RH Enterprise Linux 6 onto the computer, I created two additional partitions, one 400 GB for Linux's storage and a 10 GB swap space. I chose Window XP as the default OS.
After the installation, when the system started up, I can hit a key to have two optional OS: Window XP and Linux. If I chose Linux, the system would boot up. If I chose Window XP, the boot failed with a message that windowssystem32configsystem was missing or corrupted. I read some articles that the problem can be fixed in window's recovery console with fixboot. After entering the fixboot command and restarting the computer, Window XP still failed to boot with an error message that another file was missing.
I thought I might have made some mistakes in the installation procedure and it would be cleaner to reinstall both OS. So I tried to install Window XP Professional again. Unfortunately, after booting from Window XP CD and formating the MBR and copying the window XP files, the computer can not restart with the installed XP. Instead, the computer boot from Window XP's CD repeatedly. If I remove Window XP's CD, the computer simply can not boot at all.
I began to wonder whether RH's Enterprise Linux made some change on the MBR of the HD that Window XP can not format.

I've been trying to add a user to the system, so I can use it through samba to access the shares on the server. I'm using "useradd" but the command is not found... with a little search, I was able to find the command "/usr/sbin/useradd username" my question is can someone point me to a guide with basic administration task, I was checking out the wiki on Centos, but didn't find "adding user"; I know Centos has a gui for this, but I would like to stick to shell commands. By the way why some commands are only access through /sbin and others /usr/sbin. I know this probably has to do with your path, but how can I fix this so I don't have to type the whole path every time.

A little more extreme than what I meant to do, but the partition was too big, there was a bunch of unused space and I was trying to shrink it.... i have a partition set up to put it back in, does anyone know of a tutorial that shows how to do it? I can't seem to find one, it would surprise me if there wasn't, theres one for everything else.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have been running 11.04 for what i'd say is about a month now. In the very beginning, i shredded through a few installs, because i couldn't get windows and 10.04 to play nice. With the new update, and some renewed motivation (Portal 2), i'd like to try to get both up and running again.
First, the details. I installed both OS's in a jumbled order, realized that i basically effed everything, and wiped both drives clean. I then installed windows, then Ubuntu 10.04. I think my main point of error was the way i set up the boot sectors on my final Ubuntu install, but i can't remember how i did it. all i know is that linux is sda, and windows is sdb. what is strange, however, is when i do an Fdisk of my mounted drives, i see 3 partitions under sda1, labeled sda1, sda2, and sda5
On to the previously tried methods: I've tried a simple mount of the windows drive, followed by a "sudo update-grub." all this gets me is a list consisting of 11.01, 11.01 backup, 10.04, 10.04 backup, and memtest86+. not even a hint of windows.
I've tried "sudo grub-install" on both sda and sdb, but still no dice.
That's about all i've tried. I've searched for the past week with limited results, and i'd really like to avoid reinstalling ubuntu if at all possible. Any other information, like an fdisk results list or anything like that can be provided if need be.
I have implemented LVM to expand the /home partition. I would like to add 2 more disks to the system and use raid 5 for those two disks plus the disk used for /home. Is this possible? If so, do I use type fd for the two new disks and use type 8e for the existing LVM /home disk? Or do I use type fd for all of the raid disks?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI currently have an Ubuntu Server setup with a CF card that has / and /boot on their own partitions. I also have a single 1TB drive that is dedicated to the /home partition, however it's a drive that I have run out of space on.
I just purchased a 1.5TB drive to throw in the server, but I am not sure how to set this drive up so that it's seamlessly integrated with the 1TB drive. I would like it setup so that my /home partition is expanded from 1Tb to 2.5TB. I know what I am explaining is similar to raid 0, of which I am not opposed to, except that everything I have searched for online solely explains a raid setup during installation, and I don't have the time (due to school) to reinstall and reconfigure my system.
So in a nutshell, is there a way to setup raid 0 without doing a re-install or is there a way to setup 'fstab' to accomadate my request?

I'm running low on disk space on my 10.04 server install. I'm running my normal partitioning without any lvm.

I have an existing Fedora 15 system installed from scratch.I've ordered a harddrive identical to my SDA and want to add it to my existing system as a RAID1 setup.I've googled around and cannot find recent clear instructions how to accomplish this. I don't want to reinstall everything from scratch. It should be possible to create the RAID1 using the existing data disk and then mirror everything up?

View 9 Replies View RelatedA local store built a brand new dual core system for me about a month ago with a 1TB drive and installed Karmic on the entire drive. I now have a piece of external hardware that requires XP and simply will not work in XP in Virtualbox. I have purchased another 1TB drive, and my thinking is to create an XP partition of about 2-300GB and leave the rest of the drive for another Karmic partition and dual-boot. I don't care which drive is primary (unless there is a reason I should).
I was thinking of unplugging the karmic drive and putting the new drive in it, installing XP on it, then adding the Karmic drive back to the system and editing one of the boot files to add the other operating system.
If so, which boot file should I edit? Which drive should be primary? Or, is there a better, easier way to do this?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have two systems, both having file systems running on LVM. System No 1 has 2 PATA HDD (40 and 80 GB) running linux on LVM. System 2 has a single SATA HDD (300 GB) which again uses LVM. What i was trying to do was to add the two HDD in system 1 to system 2, possibly with little or no data loss. So i connected the PATA drives from system 1 to system 2 and booted up. The system booted up to the openSUSE 11.3 splash screen and stopped after scanning the HDDs. Frankly i never expected openSUSE to try n auto mount the new drives. I think the problem was caused because both the systems had VG and LV of the same names. Can the volume group be renamed, maybe from a live CD or somthing?? System 2 is not boot able now.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a running RHEL5 system, which has two physical disk drives, but is currently running on a single drive of the pair. The single drive the system is running on contains a root/boot partition and a swap partition. I would like to be able to add a mirror drive to this existing setup without having to disturb the running system (much). That is, I don't want to have to completely dump, reinstall (creating the mirror on the way up), and reload from backup media if I can avoid it. I have seen procedures that go as follows:
- the "extra drive" (the one not being used as the current root/boot device) is first brought under LVM control as a root object with one physical mirror attached.
- the data from the running root/boot drive is rsync-ed over to the LVM-controlled half-mirror, and boot records added.
- System rebooted on newly created half-mirror.
- Original root prepped to be second side of LVM mirrored root, and is added in.
Can one boot from an LVM disk directly? There seems to be some question on this that came up in other lists I had read online.
I have install Cent OS 5.5 on VM Ware ESXi 4. I have added new hard disk of 100 GB Disk space to same VM Ware instance.
How do I initialize that volume so I can see it on Linux server and use it.
I have Ubuntu 10.10 installed on one (physical) hd and on the other one Windows. On both drives grub is installed to boot both operating systems. When I wanted to install SP1 for Win 7 I had to add a bootable flag to the partition from which Windows boots, otherwise the installation of SP1 does not work. I did so by booting into Ubuntu and using gparted to add this flag. After doing so the update for SP1 worked without any problems.
When trying to boot back into Ubuntu grub complained that it couldn't find the kernel anymore! I tried to boot into a Ubuntu minimal cd and to restore grub using chroot, update-grub and grub-install which didn't work. I still had the problem that it was Unable to boot Ubuntu putting me in some minimal system called initramfs. It seems however that the uuid of the partitions changed. I guess this happened when I added the bootflag to the windows disk.
Next thing I tried was to tell grub not to use the uuid for loading the kernel by uncommenting something in /etc/default/grub. Then I got the kernel booting but it suddenly stops (I guess when it is trying to mount the root file system) saying that the concerning uuid does not exist putting me into initramfs again. The strange thing is that there I coulnd't even manage to mount the root partition using /dev/sdb1 (on which it is in my case). Any way to restore the system again without having to reinstall it.
While dual-booting Windows and Linux, Linux sets the system time to UTC, so Windows thinks it's midnight near mid-morning. Is there any other way to tell Windows to use UTC? I've seen the registry tweak proposed here and other places. This does not work on my computer (Windows 7 32-bit).For reference, the registry entry is this:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlTimeZoneInformation]"RealTimeIsUniversal"=dword:00000001
