General :: Windows - Software KVM For Dual-Display?

Sep 12, 2011

Does a KVM software solution exist that will allow you to utilize two monitors on multiple systems? I'd like to hook up my MBP to my displays, but have the flexibility to switch back to Windows/Linux on a whim.

I have two monitors. I would like the ability to use these monitors from all of my computers using a software-based KVM switch. The alternative is stopping my workflow and manually hooking up the monitors, which is the process I currently use and the process that I'm trying to automate. I'm wondering if such a product exists.

General :: VNC Connection To A Dual Display PC?

Jul 11, 2010

I have a one ubuntu machine, that has two displays are fixed, and I used to have a vnc connection from a debian pc. but the thing is each time I connected to this ubuntu pc, i usually get my connection to the primary display. Is there a method, that I can display both displays, at once, and I have a scroll bar to scroll between each of them. I tried to specify a port as,

xvnc4viewer 192.168.1.1:5900 -> goes to the primary display
xvnc4viewer 192.168.1.1:5901 -> goes to the secondary display

but Isn't there a method that I can view both of them at once?

General :: Dual Screen Display Setup In Fedora 12?

Jul 12, 2010

I am Currently attempting to set up a Dual Screen setup at my work but seem to be having some strange results. For some reason the O/S is only recognising one of the monitors, it knows exactly what the Make and model of the monitor is but doesnt appear to know that there is another monitor plugged in. It constantly says that there is 2 screens plugged in but lists the second screen as "CRT-0" even if no DVI cable is plugged into the second screen. This has really troubled me and has really got me thinking. I have set-up other Dual-screen setups with exactly the same hardware previously and it has worked fine? I am using a Lenovo A58 Tower with an Nvidia Quadro FX-380 Graphics card that I know is capable of dual Dual-link DVI output! With 2 x LG W3000-H Monitors running Fedora 12.

General :: How To Fullscreen Application Across Both Monitors Of Dual Head Display

Feb 3, 2011

I have two Ubuntu 10.4 machines (and Ubuntu continues to hide more and more xorg.conf config such that I no longer know where to find it). One is a laptop running dual headed - DP1 is the internal screen, and VGA1 is an external monitor; both are running at 1600x900. The other machine is a desktop running both VGA1 and HDMI1 (which is actually a display port with a DVI adapter) at 1600x900. So in both instances my desktop is 3200x900. I run a VNC server on the laptop and connect to it (via SSH tunnel) from the desktop - when I press the full screen hot key, I get a 1600x900 view of the remote machine on one monitor, and half of my local desktop on the other monitor - the "full screen" only expands to fill one local monitor.

Normally this is exactly what you want when you full screen a web browser, email client, or other application. I'm sure there's some X magic to make it clear what a full screen actually entails, and the vnc client application is just dutifully accepting what it's told. While I would like to keep the normal full screen behavior for regular applications, but when I'm VNCing to another 3200x900 machine, I'd really like full screen to stretch across both local displays. Resizing the window to be "close" isn't quite good enough since I still have local panels at the top and bottom of one display (though I can set them to autohide), plus the VNC client application window border (since it doesn't appear to respect -notitle).

Is there any good way to have X lie to a single application about the "full screen" size? Can I get it to lie to all applications? xrandr --noprimary appears to have no effect.

General :: Dual-booting Windows : Why Install Windows First?

Apr 1, 2011

I've read that, when configuring a dual-boot system, you should install Windows first to avoid any issues. Some questions: I'm assuming this has to do with the boot loader so: How is Windows boot loader so different that this matters? If I'm totally off, please explain. Is this the same case with Windows 7 and Windows XP? Depending on question 1 of course: Will installing Windows later on mean that it will definitely not work or just that you might encounter issues later on? Some tutorials are kind of ambiguous about that point.

Initially twin view ( same desktop viewed on both monitors ) worked no problem

Once xinorama was enabled to extend the one desktop across both I encountered a mouse issue.

Main monitor is on the right, 2ndary on the left... When I drag the mouse from the right monitor over to the lest.. the cursor appears to get stuck on the left monitor's right hand edge.. it flickers as i move it around...

If I drag the mouse to the right a few whole mousepad lengths it will come back to the right...its like fighting to bring it back..

General :: Export Display From A Terminal To A Windows PC?

Aug 20, 2011

Exporting display from a Linux terminal to a Linux desktop is easy; you do the following:

On 192.168.90.121 (localPC):

xhost + 192.168.10.164

On 192.168.10.164 (remotePC):

export DISPLAY=192.168.90.121:0.0 <br/>
firefox

The Firefox window appears on my localPC. In the above case both PCs are Linux.

Can I similarly export the Linux display to a Windows PC? In the above example, localPC would be Windows and remotePC would be Linux.

General :: Make Display Switchable Between Two Windows?

Aug 29, 2011

I must display two different windows (different application) on a single X display/screen., with a small sticky window that display buttons to switch from one (virtual) screen to the other.

Although I thought this would be an easy task for a simple window manager like fvwm, I didn't get it to work.

I've tried fvwm in combination with the FvwmPager, but I keep getting problems to place the different windows in the different virtual desk or page (automatically).

e.g. if you do: xterm -title "Hello" and xterm -title "There", I want Hello to go to virtual screen 1 and There to go to virtual screen 2.

I've also tried using metacity and switching between workspaces.

Is there an example configuration available? I'm not fixed on a specific window manager.

General :: Websites Don't Display Properly In Linux / But Fine In Windows

Mar 16, 2010

I tried troubleshooting this on the Ubuntu forums, but my thread went nowhere, so here I am! I'm REALLY hoping someone can help, because this is immensely frustrating.I just moved to a new house, with a new ISP. All of a sudden, all the machines running Ubuntu (there are 4 of them on my network) are having trouble rendering websites properly. Some websites are perfectly fine; some render with things missing (e.g., no photos or no CSS); some render as text-only; and some won't display at all - I get a "server not found" error. If I boot into Windows on any of these machines, there's no problem. To complicate matters more: Sometimes the "server not found" sites will decide to connect, then they'll fail again. This has been changing day to day (sometimes even hour to hour). Anything within the google.com domain is a good example of this. Two of the affected machines are desktops (one running headless as a server), and two are laptops. All four are running Ubuntu, but they're all running different kernels. The ONLY things these machines have in common is that they're running Ubuntu, and they're all connecting to the internet wirelessly.

Because things work properly in Windows without exception, and because (at least on the laptops) things work fine in Ubuntu on any other internet connection, I can rule out wireless network adapters. I have tried using two different wireless routers - no change. I have tried using 4 different web browsers - no change. I have tried plugging a laptop directly into the incoming connection, bypassing the router entirely - no change. I have tried purging and reinstalling Flash on one of the laptops - no change. I have tried to connect to affected websites using their IP addresses to rule out DNS issues - no change. This one has me completely stumped. The only thing I can think is that this is something to do with my ISP, but I can't imagine what it would be. I called the guy who runs the ISP (it's a local outfit run by one or two guys, as I'm living in the middle of nowhere), and he said there's nothing he's aware of at the ISP level that would be causing a problem like this.

General :: Dual Boot Ubuntu From Windows 7 64 Bit?

Dec 18, 2010

I've been reading many threads on the ability to dual boot. I am not a "newbe" but have installed linux and Fedora many times, included starting from Windows 7 using EasyBCD. I wish to install Ubuntu Studio 64AMD on my PC:

CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 965
RAM: 8GB
HD: Hitachi HDT721064SLA360 SATA ~600GB C: 200GB & D: 200GB, Fedora: 100GB the remainder for Ubuntu.

My problem is that the installation instructions don't seem to talk about NOT installing grub on MBR as it was on the Fedora install. I don't want to accidentally overwrite my MBR. Is this option available? Will EasyBCD work with Ubuntu? No, I want Windows 7 left intact and do not want to dual boot from Grub!

General :: Dual Booting Windows 7 And OpenSUSE - 11.3 ?

Feb 28, 2011

My PC is an older model Toshiba Satellite that I've upgraded a bit to handle Windows 7 Ultimate x64.

Recently, I joined a CST program at a local college, and there is an entire mod on Linux. I'm at the top of my class, and I aim to stay that way, so I found out what distro they were using, and downloaded openSUSE 11.3. I tried to install it once, and I failed, though I didn't screw up my Windows...much.

I've created an entire 132GB partition, and a 3 or 4GB swap, but I keep getting an error about the boot loader not being on a partition entirely below 128GB. So, I set the partition for 127.98GB, and still with the error.

I'm no slacker when it comes to working with Windows, but when it comes to Linux, of any type, I'm horrible. I need to be able to install the fully functional openSUSE OS alongside my Windows 7 Ultimate, without completely screwing my Windows install up. I can recover, so I'm not afraid to try new things.

General :: Windows - Backup A Dual Boot System?

Aug 29, 2010

I dual boot windows and ubuntu on a particular machine and I'm looking for a comprehensive backup solution. Basically I'm after a single tool to clone the entire drive and do incremental backups with little to no concern for the underlying os.

My first instinct is to set up rsync to do the back up from ubuntu and just mount the windows partition when it does its thing so it backs that up too. Does that sound reasonable or am I missing something? At face value this seems like a reasonable answer, but I can't help but feel like something is "off" with that approach.

If it has locked up again, i think it may be the cd drive playing up. If i replace it temporarily with a newer drive will Ubunutu kick up a fuss when i out the old one back in. I don't intend using a cd-rom anyway. i just want to use it as a domain controller and file server.
