A few days ago I decided to try a linux OS for the first time. Following a how-to advice, I created a ~80gb partition (on a 320 gb sata disk) for Win7 and installed it. Then I installed Ubuntu 10.04, chose to make partitions manually, created a primary ext4-partition (right after the one with Win7) for / and a 1024mb swap partition. So now the disk is parted this way: 512 booter - Win7 system, ~ 80gb ntfs - Ubuntu /, 8 gb ext4 - Ubuntu 1 gb swap - file storage, ntfs ~240 gb (created using Win7 bootable disk, but the issue from below started before this).
After the installation the boot loader failed to load any system, giving the error from the topic title. I tried several ways to reinstall/repair/reconfigure grub in the live-CD mode. Some of them didn't change anything, others were not completed because of an update-grub error ("cannot find a device for / (is /dev mounted?)"). Grub version is 1.98b. The disk with Win7 and Ubuntu is treated as hd0 in grub and sdd in Ubuntu

I have successfully installed a dual boot system with Fedora 14 on drive sdb and WIN7 on drive sda, with Fedora 14 being the major (default) OS. The system is an AM3 with a quad core CPU and all SATA drives. The drives are set to IDE mode, and I am wondering:-
1. What are the benefits of AHCI - will it improve the speed and responsiveness of my system? And
2. If it is worth installing, do I have to do a complete re-install of the OS, or is there some way of updating the installed Fedora to include and operate with AHCI mode drives?
I'm quite happy with the system as it is now, but if there is a way to squeeze extra speed out of it I'm willing to give it a go. And never having been involved with SATA drives and Linux previously, I'm completely ignorant on the subject.
I am using RHEL 5.4 in VMware. Recently i have made changes in /etc/sysconfig/selinux and made it to be in "enforcing mode". Now when I rebooted my system, It is showing the following error:
"Unable to load SELinux Policy. machine is in enforcing mode.
Kernel panic- not syncing: Attempted to kill init!"
I am facing the problem that when I login to the machine in graphical mode the machine get reboot and same time when I login to the same machine through ssh using another machine, it is successfully login to that machine,and also ,if I do ctr+lalt+f1 and login to the machine in text mode it also works,

Why in expert mode does it look like Partitions 2 and 3 share the same sector / hd / Cylinders? Is this OK?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI had 10.04 I believe and I really don't use Ubuntu that often and have Windows 7 as my primary OS. I decided to boot into Ubuntu and it checked for updates, I said yes to all and it rebooted. Thats where it messed up. Now when I try to boot, it gives me my options: Windows 7 and Ubuntu as usual but once I select Ubuntu, it flashes a screen (I think it says unknown command, I might be wrong) and restarts again... and it keeps on doing the same thing over and over. It doesn't even let me get into safe mode. Would I have to do a new install?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI was trying to make Plymouth work on my F11 install. So I followed the tips lying around and added vga=792 to the kernel line of /boot/grub/grub.conf . Result: at startup I get the message " Unknown video mode 0x318" (792 is 0x318 in hex) and a list of modes. Pity all modes are text modes. There is also the ability to type "scan" to see mode video modes, but the additional modes found are text-only (well, text on framebuffer, but still text). The boot sequence only shows a black screen, with "Fedora 11" and a blue bar (different shades of blue) at the bottom. What's strange, is that radeon.ko is in the initrd. What to do to make mode vga=792 (or any graphical mode) work?

my fedora 14 did an automatic update tonight and on reboot it hangs displaying the "f" before the login in menu. The "f" is how I now feel.I do "fn+f2" as it is booting and it displays the sequence of loading items which report all is "ok" until it gets to "jexec services" and then it hangs.I do not know how to access the machine in command line mode and I am not sure what to do from here. I beleive the "jexec service" is a Sun Java item but I am not sure.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI tried to boot from CD for demo mode (9.10) but my XP machine wouldn't do it. I opened CD from My Computer and a selection window opened. Choices were to reboot to demo, Install to Windows or Help with Boot. I selected Help with Boot and a boot program was downloaded and installed (I think to drive C: (XP)). When I restarted, a new boot window opened giving me a choice to boot to XP or Ubuntu (9.10) and I chose Ubuntu. Instead of opening for demo it went to full install and I aborted the procedure, went to add/remove programs and uninstalled Ubuntu. Now when I restart I still get the boot selection window, Any suggestions as how to remove the boot program? Can't find it.
View 2 Replies View RelatedAfter updating Ubuntu 10.04 I'm getting this error message. "Ubuntu is running in low graphics mode. Failed to load the NVIDIA kernel module." I have a NVIDIA Geforce 220 video card and previously installed the NVIDIA drivers. All was working well until this last update. There are countless number of forum messages on how to fix this but my problem is compounded because when I get this message the machine appears to lock up.
It doesn't respond to any keyboard commands such as Ctrl-Alt-F1. I am not able to get to a command prompt at all. This was a fresh install of 10.04 so I believe it uses GRUB2 which automatically boots into the operating system with no menu. Is there a way to stop GRUB2 from automatically running the OS and giving me a menu? I really don't want to reinstall.
I'm trying to setup and configure a server entirely with text only run mode 3 on a virtual machine so I can redo my current live server. I'm now trying to set up the firewall of the system using iptables. I've read up on it and came up with the following:

Everything above worked for me but just out of interest I looked at my live server which was configured using a GUI. I ran iptables-save and it was pretty much the same but its port open lines read like this:
#iptables -A INPUT -p tcp -m state --state NEW --dport 80 -j ACCEPT
so finally my question is do I really need the "-m state --state NEW"? Wouldn't having that drop established connections on those ports? I'm just confused as to what exactly the NEW state is doing and would it make a difference if I didn't include it.
I have few virtual machines running on one of xen servers & I'm experiencing a problem booting up one of clients "domain".
How can I force this machine to boot up to runlevel 1? I can't see grub menu when first booting it up!
My linux workstation recently crashed. After rebooting, Linux (Red Hat 5.3) will not boot properly and automatically went into emergency mode or recovery mode i think. I can still see my /home/user/ and all the files inside.I boot from CD to rescue mode and tried mounting read-only the /dev/sd5 which contains the files in the crashed hard disk to try to copy out my files but mounting was unsuccessful (invalid argument). I checked the filesystem type using fsck -N /dev/sda5 and shows it to ext2. i tried to mount another known working hdd and was successful.
My question is why in emergency mode, the crashed hdd is able to be mounted automatically as read-only but cannot be done in rescue mode thru a bootable CD?Is there any special mount options used in emergency mode?I also cannot copy out in emergency mode booting from the crashed hard disk as everything is read only.
I am trying to set the default printer on a machine running xubuntu from the command line. It looks like I need: lpoptions -d "printer_name" but I do not know the name of the printer. How can I find this information?
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I installed a new copy of my distro on another partition, in order to preserve all the settings from my old my user account, I made a user account with the same name on the new installation, and then copied my old user account's files (in their entirety) to the new user account, overwriting it. I did the copying from the root account (where else? I assume the new user account can't overwrite itself while it's open), and root became the owner of everything I copied, making it impossible to open the new user account. So I then chowned the new user account's folder to myself. I still can't get in, because apparently, chown only chowned the top folder, leaving all subdirectories owned by root. How do I make chown include all subdirectories? I scanned the man page, but didn't see a parameter.

I want to create symlinks for the main files of the CMS, including all config files, functions and admin sections. Then there will be a few files specific to each site.I read some tutorials on creating symlinks, although most are not very good in my opinion.
Do you have to create a symlink for every file I want to include? Or can I just create a symlink to a directory? For example:CMS is located at /www/cms/.Can I make www/domain1/ point to that directory, and if so, will all files include themselves correctly. I think I am a bit confused on how this works.

Is it possible to 'include' a global SSH authorized_keys file?
For example, I have user accounts user1,user2,user3 and my user name is Benjamin. I want to be able to use my ssh key to authenticate as each of these users. I can manually copy my key to each .ssh/authorized_keys file individually, but is there a way to simply include /home/Benjamin/.ssh/global_authorized_keys in each of these user's authorized_keys file without manually adding and removing?
