Server :: Old Redhat Server Upgrade The Kernel With The Command Yum -y Install Kernel
May 24, 2010My company support a client with an old Redhead server " Linux version 2.6.9-5.ELsmp [URL] (gcc version 3.4.3 20041212 (Red Hat 3.4.3-9.EL4)) #1 SMP Wed Jan 5 19:30:39 EST 2005" My IT department wants to move this old server to a VMware machine and I'm trying to check if this project can fly. Me my self never worked on an old Linux server there for my first question is can I upgrade the kernel with the command yum -y install kernel..... and when I'm done I'm still going to have the old kernel just in case?

1)I need to install the Bigmem-kernel to detect the ram more than 4Gb,
2) or change some kernel parameters in configuration file and rebuild the kernel
Is there any another solution for this to update operating system to detect the more RAM

I had earlier 2.6.29 kernel version installed through Fedora 11 Leonardos.I followed simple steps through url.html and it went fine.I could see new Kernel during grub.conf splash display during dual-boot option.But there are few doubts like as shown below:

though the process went fine....Is it fine with the last line?Though I can easily boot into New Kernel and can see everything there. why it says "No modules.."
Also, Just for information - "Why we compile kernel?Say I have two kernels now- 2.6.33 and 2.6.29. Whats the difference?

Mar 18, 2011I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 with Windows 7 via Wubi.
Until yesterday, my kernel was 2.6.32-29.
Yesterday, I was offered 2.6.32-30 by the update manager and accepted it.
However, I can't boot up using that kernel. I get no video. (I'm now choosing -29 at bootup instead of -30. It still works.)
What should I be trying in order to get -30 to work?

Aug 19, 2010I'm running Lenny with the default kernel 2.6.26. I recently got a wireless card supported by the ath9k driver, so I followed the instructions on this site:http://wiki.debian.org/ath9kwhich had me install a 2.6.32 kernel image from lenny-backports. Everything installed fine without errors, but when I rebooted after the install, after the kernel messages scrolled by and the screen would normally switch to the gdm login screen, all I got was a blank screen with some distorted squares. I used Ctrl-Alt-F1 to switched to a shell and everything looked fine, but when I Ctrl-Alt-F7ed back to X, I got another black screen with distorted images. Any idea what could have caused this from the kernel upgrade, and what I can do?Edit:Here is the end of my /var/log/Xorg.0.log after booting:

Mar 31, 2011I'm a Windows SysAdmin and we currently have a half dozen CentOS 5.5 machines at my current job. I also use Fedora 14 at home. I've been trying to get up to speed on Linux and feel like sticking with the RedHat derivatives as opposed to trying a new distro whenever something new comes out has really helped me.
I have a job interview coming up and it sounds like something I'd really like. They have an upgrade of VMWare from 3.5 to 4.1 in the works and virtualization is really my focus right now. Anyway the guy told me that they use SUSE and he really doesn't like RedHat. I don't remember how he described it, but he made it sound like it was too specialized and SUSE is more open.
