I know that my Xterm can underline text normally, because when I pass Xterm the '+nul' option, then do this:
Code:
It underlines. I just cant seem to get it to work for my PS1 variable, although its quite possible Im doing it incorrectly. has anyone managed to do this, is it possible?
Here is my PS1 variable:

i am on processing text tasks And i found that if you assign a text to a variable is chomp'ed automatically the newline
Code:
variable=$(cat file.txt)
The problem is i can only access the items/lines using:
Code:
for line in $variable
do
echo $line
# Other commands
done
how do i convert this to an indexed array. More importantly, how do i get access to individual $line[0], ..., $line[n] Another thing, if the file.txt, has lines with spaces it is a mess using the for...in..., but echoing prints line by line...o_0

What I have works, but wondering what is the 'right' way to replace the digits with the letters given in this loop? somehow use a case or multiple sed? i thought of a multiple sed or a case but couldn't get it to work
Code:
# ...
bcv=$(echo $line | awk -F" " '{ print $1 }' | sed 's/1/q/g;s/2/w/g;s/3/e/g') # and so on
Code:
while read line
do
bcv=$(echo $line | awk -F" " '{ print $1 }')
if [ $bcv == "" ]
[code].....

I need to search a text file for a string of numbers which are different lengths, and always are between number=" and " like:
number="1234567890"
number="22390"
I need to grab those numbers and pipe each one to a line in a file. I've already tried something with awk and that didn't seem to work.

kernel 2.6.21.5, GNU (slackware 12.0). KDE 3.5.7.
Suppose I enter a forum where everyone writes in Spanish. When I want to post, the editor, as I type the words, underlines them in red, as if I were misspelling the words. But, if I write an English word, he doesn't underline it. Obviously, he is thinking I'm writing in English.
I suppose the editor is in my system. That is, it is not an editor sent to my machine by the site. Hence, I must have the means of telling him not to care about spelling.

I want to get the last term of an unknown-sized text line, by usig the awk command. Is there any variable which points to the last term of a text line ? (obviously, y can obtain that term if i knew how many terms does the line have... i.e. awk '{print $12}' ; if we are talking about a 12-terms text line) I wonder if there is an option like $?, to get the last term.

I have an essential problem with Gnote. Although a word is linked it is not clickable nor underlined. Basically there is not any sign showing that the word is a link. It looks like an ordinary word. However, when I select it then "Link" button becomes enabled and if I click to that button it takes me to the linked point. I think it is a very basic problem but strangely I haven't found anything about it in my searches. Is this Gnote's normal behavior? I have Ubuntu 10.04 and had this problem in both Gnote 0.6.2. and 0.7.2 (latest release).

Code:
#!/bin/bash
VARR=`cat /proc/asound/cards | grep HDMI | cut -c 1-2`
VARX="defaults.ctl.card $VARR"
VARY="defaults.pcm.card $VARR"
FILE1="alsa"
FILE2="alsa.new"
echo $VARX
echo $VARY
sed "s/defaults.ctl.card*/'$VARX'/g" $FILE1 > $FILE2
This is what I have right now. Well, I thought I knew sed, and apparently I don't... I tried writing this for someone else, and this has given me trouble, so since the user pretty much figured it out on his own, here it goes.
Say VARR=1, so VARX and VARY contain the above text, appended by 1.
What I am trying to do is replace the text "defaults.ctl.card 0" by VARX and "defaults.pcm.card 0" by VARY. The contents of FILE1 is the file being used to search for both text fields, and FILE2 is the output file. I tried using single quotes, double quotes, and a mixture of both, and no go whatsoever. So my question... What is the proper way of searching for text within a file and replacing with a variable?

I am trying to think of a logic where my file contains some data I had to read and do some processing. Issue is that file contains data multiple times. For example:
:::::::::::
var1=value1
var2=value2
[code].....
I have to read first paragraph of variables and do some processing and then move on until the end of file. Variable names are same in whole file but for each paragraph the value is different. I can't think of a logic to attain this task. How can I do it? It should be a simple bash script, but I am not able to work out.

can i use the value of one variable to generate a name for another variable? for example i want to use the counter from a "do while" loop to name and define a variable each time the loop executes. for example
objectnames1=`ls -a`
objectnames2=`ls -a`
etc.
i don't have a script yet but each time through the loop i intend to cd to a particular directory and then define a variable containing a list of each object in that directory as values. for the rest of the script to work, each variable generated has to be unique, and i can't think of a good way to accomplish this.
if using a value from one variable to name another isn't possible, can anyone think of a more elegant solution? i know limited syntax but i'm willing to read up...

I am trying to write a Perl script that can open a file, find text that appears between two identifying strings (for now, "start" and "end"), then modify that text by enclosing it between "term_" and "_term" . Since the identified strings vary, the replacement string becomes "term_$1_term". From looking at other threads in this forum I've been able to get as far as spitting out the modified terms using the following code:
open FILE, "start2.txt" || die ("Could not open file <br> $!");
$text = <FILE>;
while ($text=~ s/start (.*?) end//) {
[code]....
The problem is how to get "term_$1_term" into the file in the same while loop, which I'm guessing would be some of variant of "$text=~ s/$1/$term/;" (which doesn't work as it stands).

may be an advanced question but I need to know how to do this. Here at work I am in charge of recruiting and we have about 1,000 resumes in already. All of the resumes are in a .pdf format. I need to rename every .pdf in the following format:{firstnameLastname}.pdfThe only way I know how to do this is to convert all the .pdf files to text, extract the name out of the first few lines of text, import into excel, and then use VBA to rename the files in mass:Here is my logic so far:~Deskop/a = houses all the .pdfresumesOpen terminal: Code: cd ~/Desktop/afor f in *.pdf; do pdftotext -raw $f; done That will convert all of the preceding resumes into text filesNow I would like to append the name of the text file into the last line of the text file. So, for example, for Resume1.txt, I want to append "Resume1.txt" to the last line within Resume1.txt. So after I run the command I open Resume1.txt and on the last line within I want to see "Resume1.txt" on the last line, at the end of the resume.How can I do this? I would like to use a loop and have the terminal append the filename to the body of the text file until all of the have been appended.

I was trying to install GTK+-2.8.20, so I installed it's necessary dependencies in this order:
pkg-config-0.23
glib-2.20.4
pango-1.24.4
jpeg library
tiff library
cairo
And I was about to install the last dependency: ATK (Accessability Toolkit).I opened the Archive Manager to extract the "atk-1.26.0.tar.gz" file (yes, I'm still switching from Windows so I'm fond of GUI), but I noticed all the text in that window was boxes, like the □ type box for every letter of text.So instead I thought it wouldn't be a big deal, because the terminal and regular windows weren't screwed up.I opened a text file in gedit (reference to commands in terminal, such as how to extract files via terminal), but yet again all of the text was □-like boxes.

EDIT1: I should note that I was trying to do this in PERL, not sure if other alternatives are more simple?EDIT2: I should note that for text file 3 (reference), it's a long list of MANY cnp_id values and their corresponoding chr, start, and end values. So, the code will have to take the cnp_id from text file 1 and/or 2 and search through textfile 3 (reference) to match on the cnp_id and then take the corresponding chr, start, and end values and add to the relevant line in the output.EDIT3: Sorry, I should mention that the text file entries are all tab-delimited.I have 3 text files:File 1:Columns represent sample IDs (sample_id) and rows represent CNP IDs (cnp_id). Cells represents the confidence level (confidence) for each sample and CNP.Quote:

For example:
Code:
Changing $files to "$files" eliminate these problems but causes that whole content of variable is treated as one string (one execution of loop).

my script has a variable which comes in the form +00.00 +0.00 -00.00 or -0.00 (the numbers can be any in that form) for any that have a + symbol I need to remove the +, but if it has a - symbol it needs to stay.
i need to make a new variable with the string from the old variable btut without any plus sign. I have tried a lot of different ways with no success, each thing I tried either left the + or removed the entire string. I think this should work but doesn't
foo=+12.40
bar=${foo#+}

I'm facing problems in developing the script as there are errors that sometimes i dun have any idea on how to solve it.What i'm doing now is not homework, but i had been assigned to develop some system in linux.
My problem currently is on sub-string matter, where i need to read the line from file/directory and based on the line retrieved,i need to seperate the information in the line and assign as variable..
Below are my script:
Thus, the output something like this: file_name successfully ran on Mon Jul 12 23:15:00 SST 2009.
Now, what i need to do is to extract certain information from that line which is the name, date, time and the status
The desired output is:
So,my next step is to identify the sub-string and assigned as variable first in order to parse the info and output it.
Thus,my script is:
