Debian :: Usplash Causing Booting Sequence To Stop

Sep 4, 2010

I have debian/sid on my new hp/Compaq Presario CQ62 laptop. I installed usplash and started getting booting issues every fourth or 5th boot. The system stops responding till I power off the system by pressing the power switch. I checked the syslog and noticed that it also stopped without logging the cause.

By the way, except the above issue, every thing works great on my laptop with debian/sid including the wireless using the native linux driver which I obtained from hp website.

General :: Unable To Start X When Booting With Acpi=off Or Modeset=0

Jun 30, 2011

Yesterday I thought I had solved my "Blank screen boot"-issue when I successfully got to the terminal login screen without the screen going black by booting with

Code:
Linux acpi=off
I spoke too soon. I found out shortly after that when trying to "startx" with acpi off gave me these errors:
Code:
WARNING: Error inserting i2c_algo_bit ("filepath"): No such device
WARNING: Error inserting intel_agp ("filepath"): No such device

[Code]....

Then I read somewhere that booting with "i915.modeset=0" might work. So I removed acpi=off from lilo and added this, and sure enough, I got to terminal login, but I get the same errors with "startx".

I must make it clear that I can successfully perform startx when I boot without "acpi=off" or "i915.modeset=0", I am unable to see the screen but I can hear the KDE fanfare, etc.

General :: Startup Sequence Without Login?

Jun 11, 2011

I have an embedded box on which I am developping a driver using a linux kernel. I frequently need to reboot it and relogin as root.

I wounder whether I can modify the boot sequence so that it directly boots into a bash belonging to user 'root'.

I know that this represents a security issue -- looking at my "use case" this is of concern.

General :: Change Startup Script Sequence?

Sep 18, 2010

I have an external drive mounted courtesy of an entry in fstab. The drive isn't detected at boot time until AFTER the backuppc service that will use the drive has started. I have to therefore manually stop and restart the backuppc service once booting has completed, otherwise backuppc thinks there is no drive available to it.

How can I force the mounting of my external device to occur BEFORE the backuppc service starts?

I am using Ubuntu 10.04 server edition

General :: Sequence Of Partitions / Mount Points?

Mar 1, 2011

figure out the best partition layout for my linux installation which I'm about to have on my laptop. Having read numerous articles on partitioning in linux I've gathered some ideas, still there was no let's say a clear explanation as to the sequence the mount points should be arranged on the disc...What I have in mind is to use a single disc space as efficiently as possible considering the head travel. The pc is a laptop, 160GB HDD and will be used as a normal desktop with some simple sound processing. Distro Linux Mint 10. I'm planning to have such partitions and all will come after a Win7 installation:

/boot -> some write it's not necessary in dual-booting, some that it's good to have for security
swap -> with 4GB of RAM i don't suppose i'll use it
/

[code]....

have the most heavily utilised partitions close to each other so the head doesn't move for large distances. The placement also makes a difference as the closer to the inner rim of the disc the worse performance. I'm also not sure about the sizes. Read posts with recommendations but still judging by installations on a different laptop and virtual machine e.g. 5GB for /opt is a bit too much as there's almost nothing in there. Certainly /usr fills up, /var too from what I've observed. / also has scarce data in it so I'm wondering if giving them e.g. 5 gigs each won't be a waste of space resulting in greater head travel.

General :: Dual GPU Video Card Switches DVI Ports During Boot Up Sequence

Apr 23, 2011

I have an image generator (IG) running 64-bit Ubuntu Linux, GNOME & the SAGE application all running through an NVIDIA Quadra FX4500-X2 (dual GPU). Had to install a new FX4700-X2 (and the latest drivers) because 4500's are unavailable. The computer works fine except but I cannot watch the whole boot up sequence on the same DVI port anymore. On the 4500, all video came out the lower DVI port of the GPU with the PCI-X connector (let's call that the "a" GPU). But on the 4700 card, the screens you see during boot are divvied up between the lower DVI port of each GPU. The POST screen through Ubuntu splash screen comes out the "b" GPU while the "a" GPU is blank. The SAGE Initialization page and SAGE Desktop comes out the "a" GPU while the "b" GPU is blank.

I logged in as root and looked for a GNOME menu allowing me to force all video through the same GPU & DVI port, but couldn't find anything remotely close. Any suggestions on where I can look? Technically this IG is working, but I want to fix this to avoid future wild goose chases. The system uses 52 of these IG's.
