So I went do realteak downloaded latest available drivers that seems to be were release yesterday did same command and same error So I made only make and it went fine did then make clean modules and went fine so made make install, depmod -a and modprobe r8169 verify int was up and getting correct ip from router but I'm not able to access the internet or ping any IP address

I am unable to connect to the Internet using a wired connection. I was able to use the wired network yesterday. But I had problems with the flash player, so had to reinstall Ubuntu again. I am able to connect to Internet using wireless connection. But I need to connect to the wired connection. I am using Ubuntu 10. In my IPv4 settings, it is automatically set to DHCP, using which, I was earlier able to connect. But now it doesn't seem to be happening.
But there are other entries on the syslog that were recent.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI just installed Linux Ubuntu Desktop Edition on my Acer Aspire T671-TB7Z, the installation went smooth but the internet is not working. When I login the background blinks 3 times, and I can't move the mouse, after that I can. But the real problem is I am not very experienced with Linux but the wireless icon does show up and I can access wireless networks, I am connected, but when I load a page on Firefox it says it is on "work offline" so I unticked it and tried again. Nothing worked again, this is weird because I am using it now to post this thread on my sisters netbook and on the pc that has the problem has Windows 7 Ultimate as a dual boot and the internet works fine on that too, the only internet problem I have is linux.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've installed Fedora 13 on a Toshiba Satellite A40 laptop, and am trying to get the wired ethernet connection to work. Network Manager says it is connected, and the connection details (DHCP assigned IP, gateway, dns servers) all seem correct. However, I cannot browse the internet. Checking for updates fails also. I have tried pinging various sites and the results are inconsistent - sometimes it works, sometimes it times out with "unknown host". [URL]... I've searched around for similar issues and tried disbaling ipv6 both in Fedora and Firefox, but this doesn't help either.

Okay, a couple of weeks ago I was running 10.04, got an auto update that needed a firefox restart, so rather than restart, I just shutdown the computer for the weekend. When I booted the computer on Monday it would find sites (www.google.com, start.ubuntu.com) but it wouldn't download the necessary items to load the page. Now I have a windows laptop sitting next to the ubuntu box and it was online with no issues, so I know it wasn't the connection itself. So I decided that the update messed up the system so I downloaded 10.10 and installed that and ran that all last week.
On Friday I got a system update that required a firefox restart, so I ran firefox for the day and decided that since it was friday, I would just shutdown the computer and reboot on Monday.Well now Monday is here and now I again have sloooowww internet, to the point that URL.. times out and won't come up. I have tried doing a traceroute on both machines and the windows box gets all the way to www.google.com, but the ubuntu box gets about halfway there and then gets no response. I am at a loss, I don't want to reinstall every week. I did try to reboot and run the previous version of 10.10 that shows in the boot menu, but that does the same thing. One thing I did notice is that the broadcast ip is different than the machine IP, don't know enough to know if this is a problem.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 on my Dell Inspiron 1545 64-bit laptop. Before that I used Windows7. In Windows, the internet connection worked perfectly well. But after installing Ubuntu, I am unable to connect to the internet. The network-manager applet finally says that "You are disconnected". When I do the "ifconfig", I got no IP address.
So, I installed Ubuntu 9.04 in the same system. But the problem persists.

I am at a loss. I can not access my work remote desktop via the terminal server client on my wired box running Ubuntu 10.10. My wireless laptop is able to connect right away once I established the VPN connection. The VPN connection is established on both boxes with no problems.
When I tried the Terminal Server Client on my wired boxed, it says it can not establish a connection. Yet my wireless box gets connected immediately!
I check the /etc/dhcp3/dhclient.conf and the /etc/resolv.conf to see if there were any differences, but they are essentially the same. When I have the vpnc connection, they both recognize it and I am able to ping the IP address shown when I do a "ifconfig" on the terminal.
What can be the problem? Anything I need to configure on a wired computer versus a wireless one? What else can I check?

Everything works fine under windows. I have tried to find relevant information in the forums, but nothing seems to work for me. I have tried disabling ipv6, setting a static ip, but no go. ifconfig shows no IP, dhclient results in no DHCP offers and pinging my router's IP results in Network is Unreachable.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have annoying problem. My setup is the following: debian Linux, 64 bits, VMWare workstation 7 host, with Windows XP running as guest. From Firefox, or Internet Explorer, I am unable to access few sites, for example nvidia.com, osdir. Basically get connection timed out, on the other hand ping works to those sites. Moreover, Slashdot loads very very slow and sometimes gets horrible text-only version.

I suspect it has something to do with routing on Linux, I recall having similar problem long time ago, which was fixed by setting something in /proc.
I tried setting MTU and TCP window size on Windows lower, but did not help
I managed to configure my W890i phone to get access to internet through an ubuntu-based computer. It's very easy to use the phone to give internet access to the computer, but the opposite is quite more tricky. For that I've done the following
----On the phone---
-Set the USB network option to "through computer", so that the phone uses the computer's internet connection and not the opposite.
-Decide and set "Shared Network" parameters: user, pasword and workgroup.
-In "conectivity-> internet connection" set "allow local network" to "yes"
----On Ubuntu 10.04---
-Install samba, samba-client, smbfs, smbclient, firestarter and dhcp3-server
-Configure Samba (System-> Administration-> Shared folders): same workgroup as in the phone, add new user (the phone), passwd this new user. In my case the user was called "w890i" and the password given was the same.
-Once the phone is connected to the computer through USB (then select "phone mode"), a new connection appears in NetworkManager: usb0.The aim is to create a shared network that gives internet access to this device. Edit the IPv4 parameters of this new connection, set them to Manual and give an IP adress (192.168.0.1) and a subnet mask (255.255.255.0); the rest of the fields are left empty.Connect this network.
-Set firestarter to use dhcp3: sudo ln -sf /etc/init.d/dhcp3-server /etc/init.d/dhcpd
-Launch firestarter and follow the wizard. Set "allow internet shared connection", choose the device for the primary internet access, and then the device for the shared network (usb0). Then change the settings for firestarter: activate DHCP for local network, set IP to the one we gave before (192.168.0.1).
-Open dhcp3-server config file sudo gedit /etc/default/dhcp3-server And set INTERFACES="usb0"
-Set the policies of firestarter: in incoming connections, allow connections from the IP adress given to the phone (192.168.0.1). Then add rules for the ports that need to be open for this connection. I opened HTTP, HTTPS, SMB, SMTP, POP3, IMAP, IMAPS, DHCP for all the connections in the local network.
-Apply policies and start the firewall.

After all this, the phone can access the internet through the computer. Two problems appeared:
1. I couldn't get access to https sites, like webmails. The phone gave a "communication error". But then I tried with Opera instead of the browser built in the phone's firmware, and I could finally get to https sites.
2. I couldn't retrieve mail, neither POP nor IMAP nor IMAPS. I thought it was a firmware problem again, and I tried out several mobile phone email clients written in java, but none of them worked.
So this is at the moment the problem. If I connect from the phone to the internet directly through 3G, the email clients work for all my accounts. I don't think it's a firewall problem, because the ports are opened for this connection

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a linux box (fedora) with two ethernet cards eth1 and eth2. On eth1 I successfully configured a PPPOE internet connection. Such that from the server I can browse the internet. On eth2 I wired it to a wireless router essentially to provide the wireless cloud. On eth2 I also configured dhcp, such that the Linux box is both PPPOE and DHCP server.However my clients on the LAN cannot access the Internet.
On passing the routing command I get

The router (functioning as a wireless access point mainly) has a fixed IP address of 192.168.1.2 and eth2 has IP address 192.168.1.1. The dhcp file running on Linux has been set with option router (Gateway) 192.168.1.1. I cannot figure out how to correctly set the routing table such that my clients on wireless can access the internet cloud. I googled and googled but no solid solution. Any suggestions?
Is it safe to connect a computer running a freshly installed ubuntu desktop edition directly to the internet? Or do I need to actively configure a firewall before connecting it?

I recently installed the ubuntu-desktop packages and cannot get internet through the gui, firefox never gets past the "looking up" stage.I can accessthe internet through the command line and through webmin httptunnel. Wget, apt-get install, apt-get update, apt-get upgrade all work fine from the command line. I have local access to the GUi as well in the form of VNC that is working fine.

I usually have the ISO images and copy the files to the USB with the "Startup Disk Creator" utility built in Ubuntu or eventually with Universal USB Installer or UNetbootin...
My laptop is running Ubuntu 10.04. I have my own account (custom) and 1 desktop user account.
When I log in under my account and switch to the desktop user account, I can connect to the internet. However, if I start the laptop and log into the desktop user account first I get no internet connection and the same when I switch to my own (custom) account. What gives?

My problem is that I'm unable to access the internet; actually, I'm unable to access any wireless connection at all.
I'm using a Linksys Wireless-G Notebook Adapter (2.4 GHz) in my laptop.
From what I've read, normally, many wireless cards are detected by Ubuntu automatically when you install it. However, this did not happen with my card.
...So, I'm not really sure what to do in order to gain access to the internet.

I would simply unplug the ethernet from the windows desktop plug it to my laptop and I was good 2 go.have recently moved and my roommate has a cable modem w/ wifi capabilities. When I plug in I am told that I am connected but......Nothing. dont know if the problem is due to the modem having wireless capabilities when my old one did not or the fact that my roommate has a win7 laptop that is connected via wifi etc. There have been a FEW times that I have walked out plugged in and everything has ran well. when I do plug in I look under connection information and I am told that I am connected at 100Mbps but whenever I try to visit a page I am out of luck. I define newbie (as far as Linux distros) and I have tried everything including going to work w/no sleep because I'm going through massive trial & errors
