General :: Kernel Dumps To The Wrong /var/crash?
May 2, 2011I'm running Scientific Linux 5.5 (equivalent to CentOS 5.5), and over the past two weeks, I have had a problem with my root partition filling up, preventing anyone from logging into the server.After searching for large files, and finding none, I was mystified when du told me that the root partition had only 660 MB of disk space used, whilst df showed it full. The problem was this: the /var/crash directory had been filled up by an 8GB crash file. Now, I'm a 'proper' sysadmin and make sure that /var has its own mount point, so the crash should not have touched the root partition at all. Except it did - instead of writing to /var/crash on /dev/mapper/VolGroup00-LogVol04 which is mounted as /var, it wrote the file to /dev/md0 directly, so when all the file systems were mounted, those files were hidden under the mounted /var.

Dec 20, 2010I'm using Squeeze and icedove and iceweasel and I've installed the package linux-image-2.6.36-2.dmz.2-liquorix-686. It works fine on my Dell 1521 Inspiron laptop with only one exception. If I'm surfing the web or checking my mail via a wired internet connection I'm fine... if I'm surfing the web or checking my mail via a wifi connection everything is fine... but if I happen to forget to connect to a wifi connection, and I'm in a situation where a wired connection is not available, I can start iceweasel (it doesn't do anything constructive), but checking my mail with icedove (simply starting the program) crashes my computer.
If I boot up with the 2.6.32-5 kernel, the one that's in the regular debian repository, I can not duplicate the crash. Somewhere I read that the liquorix kernels are optimized for a desktop computer. Is this my problem? Is it something else?
During the crash my screen goes to a text console and I see syslogd messages on the screen -- which I cannot reproduce here.
Debian Configuration :: Samba + Aufs Leads To Kernel Crash
Apr 20, 2010I've got a server with bit of chaos on it. There is similar data on different partitions which I like to mount remotely with samba. So I setup aufs on the server and then share the merged aufs directory (as read only). All seemed fine, and I was able to mount it nicely. However, when I enter the directory in question does the kernel on the mounting puter start misbehaving.
First it freezes for about a minute. Then I get a bunch of oops-looking messages in dmesg and the system eventually locks up totally. This is what it looks like:

Debian Configuration :: Kernel 2.6.32 And Xserver Freezes - Crash Fubar?
Sep 28, 2010I run an old Toshiba Satellite M35x S114 Laptop with Debian Testing, it always runned smoothly - although it IS testing . Since the latest update to kernel 2.6.32 , the X server just freezes. The init goes all the way to gdm, and then a blank screen , no mouse pointer, no way to get out of this screen (not CTRL+ALT+BACSPACE not CTRL+ALT+F1 / F2 ... etc) just a hard reset.
I can boot to the older .30 kernel with absolutely no problem, gdm starts normally login successfull (as I am able to write this on the reffered machine and all).
Here comes the gory details:

Jan 29, 2011My Apache web server (respectively a child process) is crashing several times a day. I wanted to find the exact reason and activated the core dumps but even though the crashing-issues continue, the core dumps were never created. I have found several howto's which basically point to the same steps:
- set "ulimit -c unlimited"
- add "CoreDumpDirectory" directive into apache2.conf (Debian's httpd.conf)
Another info I've found is that /proc/sys/fs/suid_dumpable shouldn't be 0 - so on one howto it said to echo 2 into it, on another one to echo 1 to /proc/sys/fs/suid_dumpable - didn't work with neither of them.

It also spits out something about being unable to access ext2 FS. I googled this symptom and have seen that it is fairly common, but everyone's error seems somewhat unrelated. I used the same kernel configuration as the one that is currently working, to keep things simple.

Aug 31, 2010I write the network driver. Transmission of packets in user space I do through netlink socket`s. In user space there is a handling of packets and their transmission on other device (however, it isn't important).
Problem in that any time, packets through the driver in system, and is reverse, are transferred normally. But then there comes the moment when the kernel crash. If to look in syslog it seems to me that comes deadlock. Also I think that it is related with netlink socket`s.
I can't find the information on that anywhere how correctly to use netlink socket`s in kernel space. Can at you will any a reason into the account of synchronization of sockets and the driver in kernel space?
I can give the driver code if it is necessary.
General :: New Install Dumps To Grub CLI?
Nov 11, 2010I am trying to make a clean install of linux on three new 500G HDs. Because the last failure caused loss of my wife's pictures, I'm in the dog house. I know, I know. Back-up, back-up, back-up.I'm trying to set up a Raid 5 as partial insurance against disk failure (along with a frequent back up schedule). A friend suggested that I put 4-5 partitions in the raid array to aid in recovery if a disk fails (/boot, /, /var, /home, and swap). I know that swap doesn't get 'raided'. I've looked at 50+ tutorials on how to set up raid5 from a clean install and after installing the whole system. Nothing has helped or even addressed this issue so far.
Problem is that I have now tried installing 4 different flavors of linux (Ubuntu, Mint, and a couple of distros of Fedora) with the custom disk partitioning as mentioned above. I've tried installing grub on the MBR and the first partition (/boot). I've ensured that it pointed to the correct partition to find the kernel (/). I've tried everything that I can think of, and at every reboot, I get dumped to the grub CLI after bios post, regardless of distro. I cannot get the system to load the kernel.

Mar 11, 2010I compiled a 2 custom kernels so far (many custom kernels just 2 that I have used) however, both of the kernels display an error message about EXT3-Fs and unable to load custom options even though all my partitions are ext4.
I have looked around and the only reason I find for those are that the file systems are corrupt beyond repair,However the problems always ments EXT3-fs is a ext3 file system problem and EXT4-fs is a ext4 file system poblem. Why is mine saying EXT3 and some times EXT2 when im using EXT4?

General :: Debian 686 Kernel Total Networking Failure On IbmX60 But 486 Kernel Works
Feb 11, 2011The 486 kernel works just fine, and while I have only 1GB of RAM at the moment I hope to have 2GB someday and would like to take advantage of the dual core CPU, so I would like to configure grub to run the 686 kernel by default. For whatever reason, it runs the 486 right now and the 686 fails in a major way: there is no network connectivity at all. It could be plugged into my cable modem router and it shows no wired connections. The fact that one works and the other doesn't puzzles me since I haven't touched either since the install and a few rounds of upgrades.
I should mention I'm newbie but getting better; I managed to install debian on this x60, yet while preserving the factory install rescue & recovery partition and preserving the factory install MBR so that ibm-specific hardware functions (thinkvantage button, etc.) still work. This required me to use dd to copy the first 512 bytes of my debian partition to a file in the windows partition, etc., and modifying the windows bootloader. (I wish I had learned dd long ago--it rocks). I did this because if I ever resell the X60, the fact is most people use MS Windows and having that partition adds a perception of value to some potential buyers; not to mention I paid $ for it (I was young & stupid) so why should I delete it. I also backed up the recovery partition on another drive using dd over NFS in case the hd ever heads south.
Anyway, I've never been comfy with messing with the kernel. I did once recompile a module for ALSA because it had a bug in it for an old Yamaha integrated sound card on an old PIII and the newer version worked [alsa fails on this x60 too but I think I found a post on here that has a solution I will try later]. But I'm clueless as to networking modules, not to mention the correct module is installed already from Intel for this chipset. So what is there to do?
Here's a clue: the ifconfig output is radically different from the 686 and 486 kernels. Looks like hardware is not being detected since eth0 fails to show:
I would show the diff output below if it weren't so long--and not allowed--upon 2 text files, the first holding the output of modprobe -l under the 486 kernel and the second under the 686 kernel.

This happens most frequently when this kernel module was built against the wrong or improperly configured kernel sources, with a version of gcc that differs from the one used to build the target kernel, or if a driver such as rivafb/nvidiafb is present and prevents the NVIDIA kernel module from obtaining ownership of the NVIDIA graphics device(s), or NVIDIA GPU installed in this system is not supported by this NVIDIA Linux graphics driver release.

Debian Installation :: New Kernel - Unable To Mount Root FS On Unknown Block
Jul 30, 2011I used make-kpkg to generate bzImage from 2.6.39-3-686. After update-grub and booting the new vmlinuz system. I get:
"kernel panic - not syncing:
VFS: unable to mount root fs on unknown block(0,0)".
grub.cfg shows new entry
'linux/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.39.3-686 root=/dev/sda1 ro quiet'
but previous working shows
'linux/boot/vmlinuz-2.6.32-5-686 root=UUID=210a363d-c0ed-4005-b6e8-bbc
aeb7abe54 ro quiet'
Am I missing a step? (or two?). Is it possible to do this from 2.6.32? Currently running Debian-6.0.2.1-i386-DVD-1, Squeeze, /release/current/ 20110626-15:45 on a SATA 1T hd.

Ubuntu :: 9.10 Custom Kernel V.2.6.33 Crash?
Apr 2, 2010I wasn't using my laptop for at least a few hours, but when I looked at it, it had seemed to crash. I am hoping to figure out what caused this, and to prevent it from happening again. I believe it has something to do with drm or b43 as that is what I could decipher from the screen. I have checked some logs and found nothing irregular. I do not want this to happen again. I am running kernel 2.6.33.1 with no patches and a custom config tailored to my processor. The reason I am running 2.6.33.1 is because of support for my Wifi.

Jan 11, 2011This passed weekend I decided to upgrade the household server. I found cheap 2 TB disks on sale, so I got 4 of them, and began the upgrade. All went well, I used dd to copy the LVM pv to a new disk, removed the old disks, setup the array in degraded mode, evacuated the copy volume, and added it into the array.... then reused the old disks in new desktops. (well all good after I turned on virtualization in the bios)... all except grub.
I setup a raid 1 array for the /boot partitions. So far so good... but I boot and it sees the grub MBR, I know this because it dumps me into the grub> shell. Now comes the weird part... I can boot it just fine by doing a cat /grub/menu.lst and then using the lines in there to boot it:

That works fine, but, when I reboot, no menu. I am perplexed. I copied /boot with tar (mounted the mirror on /mnt and did a "tar cf - | (cd /mnt; tar xvf -)", I ran grub-install, and update-grub, both a few times. I even dropped into the grub shell and had it setup each of the 4 disks in turn (I wanted to do that anyway, since I do really need to be able to boot from any of them... I guess I should have entries for them in menu.lst too... but one problem at a time...)

However, I want to help fedora get better.
I keep getting notices that there is some sort of kernel crash.
