General :: Ubuntu - Mounting Remote Hard Disk?

Apr 9, 2011

I have a machine running Ubuntu 10.04. I have a VPS (virtual private server) also running Ubuntu Linux. The VPS has a dedicated IP.

I want to have a setup, so that the directories on the VPS are accessible on my HOME PC like a mounted drive.

That is I should be able to do things like edit files on the VPS and copy/move files from/to my home PC to the VPS, as if the VPS was mounted on my box.

Ubuntu :: Mounting Two Hard Disk After Installation?

Jul 5, 2011

Recently I had installed "Storage Device Manager", since because my hard drive partitions were not mounted correctly during installation.

I own to hard disk "sda" 120 GB & "sdb" 1000 GB , since during boot time i had mounted the "sda" having 3 partitions of windows on locations "/partion_name 1, 2, & 3" at root, and "sdb" was not mounted during instalation.

After installation I had added "sdb" with my system and was working fine.

But "sba" was mounted at "/partion_name 1, 2, & 3", But I wanted to change this type of partion what "sdb" i.e it should prompt me for the password when I use to mount it, So I tried to change the mount type for the "sba" But wasn't able to do this beacause of error "Disk is been used by other process".

Now what i require is to mount "sda" partitions such as It may prompt for password when I try to mount and in "sdb1" having partions "sdb10" to be mounted automatically during boot time and the rest partions have to be prompted for password when I try to mount it.Is it possible..?

*Please suggest me the whole procedure in manual manner(Command line) for the same
*Also using "Storage Device Manager"
*if I remove "Storage Device Manager" in future thus it effct my system partitions
*If I mount the partition in "/media/partion_name" thus it will solve my problem.

General :: Changing GRUB From An External Hard Disk To The Internal Hard Disk?

May 14, 2010

I had a dual boot (windows 7 + debian), both of them installed in my internal hard disk, with the GRUB in it. I have recently installed a second linux distro (mint), but I put it in an external hard disk. Now the GRUB allows me to boot any of the three operating systems, but I need the external disk to do it. It seems that after the mint installation the GRUB is now working from the external disk (if the external disk is not connected, the machine does not boot.) Is there a way to change the location of the GRUB, to the internal hard disk of my laptop?

General :: Use Hard Disk Image Like A Regular Hard Disk?

Apr 6, 2010

If you have a hard disk image (including partition table, multiple partitions,...), is it possible to let Linux treat it as a regular hard disk?

By "regular hard disk" I mean I would like to have the image show up as, for instance, /dev/hdx and its partitions as /dev/hdx1,...

(I know I can mount one of the partitions in the image using "mount -o loop, offset=x ..." but I don't really like this option.)

While booting, system gives "Hard Disk Error" warning and stops. One again: I installed Ubuntu od one hard disk and at the end of instalation I pasted wrong code for GRUB, giving address of another hard disk. Jul 14, 2011

Just the last day or so, I've noticed a long pause when I boot my laptop, with lots of disk activity. dmesg says:

Why would there be a 15-second pause (during which the disk is slammed) between mounting root and mounting swap? During this time I see nothing but a blank purple screen, there are no cycling dots or text scroll. Is this normal and I'm just freaking out over nothing because there's no indicator of progress? General :: Mounting The Hard Drive From Unetbootin?

Jul 29, 2010

I recently installed Damn Small Linux using unetbootin. Booting Linux from unetbootin seems a lot like booting from a liveCD, so I'd like to mount my hard drive and see what I can do. Unfortunately it looks like Damn Small Linux has not mounted it automatically, and I'm having trouble finding my drive and mounting it from the /dev directory. There are several devices named /dev/*da* and I don't know which is my hard drive. My computer is an HP Mini netbook, so the drive is probably one of the new "solid state" drives if that affects anything. What can I do to find and mount my hard drive from unetbootin?

General :: Mounting Hard Drive In Knoppix ?

May 29, 2011

I have been running a computer under Windows XP for years, and recently it stopped booting unexpectedly. It tries to load windows, but partway though loading a BSOD flashes and it shuts down. To remedy this and hopefully fix this, my frined lent me some Knoppix CDs that I could boot from. He also lent me some external hard drives. I want to be able to access my files on my old hard drive.

Here's the problem: (in Knoppix 6) When I try to mount my main partition of my hard drive, which shows as sda2 (sda1 is an old recovery partition left over from when I ran vista), the following message pops up: "A job is pending on dev/sda2" A little later another error window pops up: Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply timeout expired, or the network connection was broken." I want to be able to mount my hard drive in Knoppix 6.

I am unsure of the sequence here. Should I first mount: mount /mnt/floppy ...or something similar And next edit the /etc/fstab file....or is this step not necessary.

Finally, this is vfat formatted. Should I try to reformat it in ext or leave it as is?

General :: Dd Copy - Hard Drive Clone Fails When Mounting Root Androotblock - /newroot Failed

Oct 27, 2010

I am trying to replace an old, smaller, and dying laptop hard drive with a newer one, using a USB external drive. I first tried cloning disk to disk with Clonezilla, but it failed after cloning my root, swap, and /home directories it froze when it tried to reinstall grub. After 2x trying, I switched to dd, which I have never really used (I am fairly new to Linux in general). The actual command I used was:

Quote:

dd if=/dev/sda of=/dev/sdb bs=4096 conv=notrunc,noerror

All seemed ok and after approximately 2 hours my 80GB drive had been cloned onto my new 250GB, with dd giving what appeared to be a satisfactory closure summary. I tried to mount and access the drive from my external USB enclosure but could not view it, though the data is there, I believe, as the size and bytes show... The error that Dolphin is giving me is:

Quote:

error - wrong fstype, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb1 Missing codepage or helper program or other error. When I installed the new drive directly into my laptop, it begins to boot (Sabayon 5.4, 2.6.35 kernel) but almost immediately I get (handwritten down, but this is close):

Quote:

detected real_root
mounting /dev/sda1 on /newroot failed: input/output error
!! Could not mount specified ROOT, try again
!! Could not find the root block device in .

[code]....

I am assuming that my issue has something to do with grub, and maybe specific UUIDs that don't match (?) but I'm not really certain. I have both Grub Legacy 0.9x and the newer Grub 2 installed (Sabayon is already moving over) but I still boot with Legacy, not with the new 2, as I don't know how to switch, and am not sure if I should yet. I thought that dd copied bit for bit, and I added the noerrorï just to try to get it all transferred, so I don't know what went wrong exactly, though something seems wrong with grub and the bootloader, I guess...

General :: No Hard Disk Drives When Installing Ubuntu

Dec 29, 2010

I'm not a stranger to Ubuntu Linux and I was using it for a couple of months with no problems until last week when I turned my computer on and it would go no further than the boot screen and it said 'Error- Insert System Disk'. So I inserted the system disk (Ubuntu Linux 10.something) and after waiting 10 minutes for it to load up it said 'Installation failed, desktop session will now be run and you can try installing again'. So I tried installing whilst on a desktop session and I eventually got to step 4 of 8 and it lets me go no further. This is what step 4 of 8 is:http://oi54.tinypic.com/mx2g79.jpg

And so I cant choose any disks or partitions and so it wont let me go any further. How do I create one? I'm currently running on desktop sessions and they take forever to load up and I cant watch videos or anything because there is no flash. By the way please try and explain to me really simply because I am quite dopey and I wont be able to understand posh complicated computer words.

Many times when I put my

after a while it goes to sleep. I
think its because of the journaling

anybody encountered that?
What would

General :: Make PHP Script Use The Second Hard-disk?

May 9, 2011

I have two SATA hard-disk drives attached to my server as shown in the following :

[root@cl-185 /]# df -h
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1 222G 166G 45G 79% /
tmpfs 2.0G 0 2.0G 0% /dev/shm
[root@cl-185 /]# fdisk -l | grep Disk
Disk /dev/sda: 250.0 GB, 250000000000 bytes
Disk /dev/sdb: 2000.3 GB, 2000398934016 bytes

Now, being a linux noob I need help on two questions :

1). Why only 'sda1' is shown when using df -h to get disk space usage, and what else needs to be done to check stats for 'sdb' ?

2). My PHP script needs to save a lot of 'cache' files, how to make the script use the second disk for saving the files - I mean what path should I edit in my script (current is '/var/www/html/tmp')
