General :: Ubuntu - Removing All But 1 File And 1 Directory?

I want to delete all but 1 file and 1 directory from the directory I am currently in. How do I go about doing this?I have a directory which has three directories a, b, c and three files 1.php, 2.php, 3.php. I want to remove directories a and b, as well as files 1.php and 2.php only. I am looking for a solution to doing this in an easier manner. I am looking for a solution that could be used on a higher scale with more folders and files.

When I search using Places -> Search for Files..., there is an extra directory that shows up in the "Look in folder:" menu. This directory (jim) is unwanted and doesn't appear in the general Gnome menus (such as Places). The attached image of a screenshot shows what I mean.
I cannot figure out how to remove it in the search menu. Perhaps it was put there because I frequently search in that directory. Whatever the case, I'd like to get rid of it. I understand that this isn't the biggest computer problem ever posted in a forum. Nonetheless, I'd really like to hear how to remove that blasted directory.

I've installed pulseaudio on my server running squeeze using this guide [URL], but i don't like it and would like to remove it. I tried uninstalling all the packages and deleting the /etc/asound.conf file, now it seems like pulseaudio is gone but alsa seems to be broken. When i run alsamixer i get the following error:

I just noticed on my Ubuntu machine (ext3 filesystem) that removing write permissions from a file does not keep root from writing to it. Is this a general rule of UNIX file permissions? Or specific to Ubuntu? Or a misconfiguration on my machine? Writing to the file fails (as expected) if I do this from my normal user account.Is this normal behavior?Is there a way to prevent root from accidentally writing to a file (Preferably using normal filesystem mechanisms, not AppArmor, etc.)
I understand that root has total control over the system and can, eg, change the permissions on any file.My question is whether currently set permissions are enforced on code running as root. The idea is the root user preventing her/himself from accidentally writing to a file. also understand that one should not be logged in as root for normal operations.

I'm new to the shell scripting. can any one help in creating shell script for matching the content of the specific variable with file. it should remove that line from the file if line is containing same value as variable and keep the other content as it is.i used grep -v for accomplishing the same. But grep will remove the pattern which is similar.For eg. Assume file "test" contain datas :aaffif i used grep -v command for the pattern "a" to this file this will remove content "aa" from the file. I want the pattern only "a" should remove from the file, if it is existing. otherwise it should throw alert content not exists.

If someone manually partitions their home and root drives and overtime they end up with a lot of dot folders (.burgerspace for example) in their home directory. Is there a quick way to get rid of all the dot folders whose program is no longer installed? For example if I completely removed BurgerSpace in Synaptic, the .burgerspace folder would remain.

Can't log into my XFCE desktop like I normaly do. all the sudden I get notified that my xsession lasted less then 10 secondsLooking at the error I can see this:
Unable to access file /home/username/.iceauthority: No such file or directory
Using failsafe I can start a terminal. From terminal I tried to start X
Code: sudo startx Result: Running on desplay:0
So I tried to run this;
Code: sudo startxfce4 And I get up a graphical desktop.
So this is not a critical situation as I easily can use this method to log on, but as there has been something causing this I would like to be able to resolve this nonetheless. Btw it is not the old chmod trick in play here, cause my .iceauthority file is gone alltogheter.

I have a remote Debian 5 machine on which I'm trying to extract a tar-file (Django 1.2.1, but that's unimportant). The first 1300 or so files extracts just fine (of about 2800 in total), after which errors liketar: Django-1.2.1/tests/urls.py: Cannot open: No such file or directoryshows up for the rest of the files, finally ending up with atar: Error exit delayed from previous errorsI use the commandtar xzvf Django-1.2.1.tar.gzI've also tried with sudo (but I'm extracting in my home directory, which I should obviusly have permissions to use without). I've done a low level format on them so they're completely empty. When I use them with my windows machines, they're absolutely fine. When I plug them into my Ubuntu machine, there is a hidden directory created called 'RECYCLER' which I'm assuming is for deleted files?However, it also creates a .exe file in this directory called 0x2D9FA278 which has an Icon with an H in it and a comment of 'Facebook Photo' This has the effect of making all the directories on the stick into shortcuts! I googled the file name and it seems to be some sort of Trojan, but I don't understand how it's go into my Ubuntu machine, I've scanned with ClamAV and it finds nothing.

I downloaded a mouse theme form gnome look and installed it in the themes. But it has not appeared in the pointer themes section in custimation even though it said that it is installed correctly.When I drag the file to install it again it says something along the lines of it cannot copy a directory over a directory.Where can I find where the mouse/pointer theme is located and delete it. I have searched filesystem, google and these forums and not had any luck yet.

I've run into a problem with my bash program.

It's meant to move old files from my Downloads folder into an archive file (later tar them). The directory exists, I've used $PWD and nautilus and ls to make sure it's there, yet for every file it gives

Im trying to extract the contents of a zip file but I want to extract it to my own directory. I'v tried -d from unzip but that just puts the contents of the zip into that directory.
But I want to extract the contents of the first (root) directory in the zip if there is only one directory in the root of the zip else just extract the files/folders in the root of the zip file (if there are more then one files).
e.g. test.zip contents the following dir structure:
test.zip
/app_v1/ <-The contents of this directory I want extracted to a dir of my choice
- folder-1
- folder-2
- folder-3
- folder-4
- file1
- file2

I am having troubles starting superPI benchmark test on Linux. I have it in a file named 'super pi' so ./super_pi doesn't work. I can't figure it out how to do it. In cmd(Win) I would do it like this
cd C:/super pi/
super_pi
If the file would be located in C:/super pi/ The problem is I somehow can't tell the path to the file.
