What is the way to execute a file of some other directory from the PWD!
A colleague gave me a shell script ("dti_motion") which needs to be run from the directory containing all the files it works on. I want to run the same script for several different directories. But I don't want to have to cd into each directory, run the script, wait for it to finish, and then cd to the next directory (there are 52 to do altogether).
So I wanted to write a very simple script that will cd to each directory and perform the script there, before going on to the next one. My colleague's script ("dti_motion") is stored in my home/bin/ and is executable. My home/bin/ is in my path, as verified by echo $path. When run from a directory containing the necessary information, the dti_motion script works perfectly well. I wrote an extremely inelegant script called "dti_motion_do_all" which is also stored in my home/bin/ and executable:

I know there will be more elegant ways to write this script with loops, rather than simply using cd, but for the moment, I just want this to run, until I have learnt to use loops properly. how to correct either of those "command not found" or "no such file or directory" errors, given that both the original dti_motion and my dti_motion_do_all script are in my /home/bin/ (which is on my path) and both scripts are executable?
I am actually running Linux Mint 10 64-bit, which should be essentially identical to Ubuntu 10.10.
When I attempt to execute a Linux binary file that I have downloaded from the internet, I get the error "No such file or directory." I have eliminated all sources of user error as explanations: I am in the correct directory; 'ls' displays the file in question as present. I am prefixing the command with './' The permissions on the files are correct and they are marked as executable
The specific cases where I have problems are with the Mathematica Player freeware program from Wolfram, the Foldit protein folding game, and the XPP-Aut dynamical system program. I have used the Foldit and XPP-Aut binaries previously on other Linux distros, including Ubuntu, so I don't believe there is any problem with the files themselves.

I'm using Ubuntu and I'm programing with eclipse CDT. My goal is to execute a php file and read the output to my c++ program. To do so I thought I should use fork(), dup2() and execl. When in shell, the call "php myscript.php" worked just fine, but when in c++ I tried:
execl("usr/bin/php", "php", "home/geiger/workspace/SemiServer/server_content/myscript.php", NULL);
And it didn't work (the process wasn't terminated and I got no output). I tried different version of this call, like losing the "php" string and/or drop "home/geiger" from the path string, to no better result.
Binary files need only execute permission to execute. No read permission is required. But all executable files must be read by the kernel into main memory before executing. Also script files need both read and execute permissions for executing the file.

For example, say I create a mime type associated to every file with the pattern *.abc. Lets say I associate this file type to application 'my_app'.
If I have file 'my_file.abc' in current folder, what I want is that when I enter only 'my_file.abc' at the prompt, it executes 'my_app' feeding it with 'my_file.abc' as first argument. (assuming of course 'my_app' is in the path)

I am looking for a clue in shell or ant script, where I excecute a binay file on linux. For example ./myfile.bin which ask me few questions.

I have been searching for 90 minutes for something that I "think" should be fairly easy. I'm pretty new to Bash Scripting so I could be completely wrong. I wonder is it possible to achieve same thing by executing some commands inside the script. As for other users, who execute the script it is not advisable to pipe the output of script with the help of tee command. Again, keeping |tee at the end of every line of the script doesn't seem to be advisable. I tried with this for couple of lines and it works. Is it possible to get the output of script to both screen and file by just executing name of the script, with some script tweaking ?

I need a way to read and delete text found before a unique string, then delete the string. I would like to have the text stored in a variable--or better yet--executed it as a shell script directly.I intend to execute the stored text in bash. It does not matter much what language the program is it, however efficiency is desirable. This script is not going to be used on large files, but it may be executed many times sequentially so the faster the script works the better. Here is an example:

what i did is created a file called pro3types but the script starts & by pass the file. i added +x to file ran the process but still no luck. i was wondering what else i should change to get the menu to the sub-categories of product3 after users selecting it. all I need to get the pro3types runs after users selecting product3 from the previous menu. need more info please see the thread: "Adding New Selections to the existing Script"

A bunch of my .rtf files suddenly (within the last few days, not sure when) have the "Allow Executing File as Program" box checked under their file Permissions. So whenever I try to open an rtf document, it asks if I want to run it. What's up with that?

I have a php file that I need to execute via a cronjob. This file should be run by the www-data user as its a file in my /var/www/project folder. When I run this file under root (php -f cron.php) everything works perfectly, but I want it to run under the www-data to be safe. Before I run it vai crontab I tried it via command line as the www-data user and I receive errors:
Fatal Error: Allowed memory size of 8388608 bytes expired (tried to allocate 232 bytes).
But when I run it as the root user I get no errors and everything works correctly. The file cron.php is used to process automated tasks in my CRM. So I don't really want to have the root user running a crontab every few minutes for this.
Must the www-data user be given more permissions? I am using Ubuntu 6.06LTS
