General :: Unlarge Mp Space On Synology DS109?

Jul 30, 2010

I'm trying to install TeXLive on DS109; everything seems to work right, still the installer is trying to download quite a big amount of data into a mp partition which size is only 62MB. So here goes a question: is there a way to (temporary) move mp from this partition to the root one? Or maybe change some magic option in TeXLive to use other path for download?

Ubuntu :: Setting Up Wireless Printer - No Link

Jul 12, 2011

Today I dug out an HP C7280 Wireless printer from my parents garage (very nice printer despite being 3 or so years old). I fixed it up and plugged it in and it worked like a charm. Only thing is I want to set it up to work wirelessly as we don't have any extra Printer cables. I cant get it to work though. Firstly, it has no IP address despite wireless being turned on in the printer.

Secondly, and this is probably the main problem, it has no IP address. It just says "No link" or "Not applicable" under network settings. After a lot of digging through google, I've tried everything I could find, from configuring CUPS and HPIJS and the like. Right now I have it plugged into ethernet and it has an IP but entering it into the URL bar of firefox gets nothing. It isn't detected by the printing app in ubuntu, either.

Debian :: Synology NAS Shared Drive Mapping

Sep 11, 2015

I've some how managed to map to a shared drive on my Synology NAS, but can only access it through the terminal when logged in as root. The share is mounted in the "mnt" directory, which I can't access when using the file manager application (as a user).

Update:
so I carried out the actions below and I can no see the share in my home directory, but can't access it. Is this because I done it with root?
root@D8:/home/user# mkdir share_nas
root@D8:/home/user# ls
Desktop Downloads Picturesshare_nas Videos
Documents Music PublicTemplates
root@D8:/home/user# mount 192.168.0.2:/volume1/NAS_share /home/user/share_nas

Ubuntu Networking :: 10.04 & Synology DiskStation DS210j - Moutning?

Jul 14, 2010

Ill start with a confession Im a total noob to the whole world of NAS and the Ubuntu OS. Until very recently I was using a Dell laptop with a couple of external hard drives to store my music and movie collections and I was connecting the laptop through VGA to my TV to watch streamed TV shows and my movie collection. I decided (sensibly I think) that this setup was practically prehistoric and was posing a risk to my music and movie collections. Therefore, I decided the buy the following: Asrock Ion 330BD-HT nettop Synology DiskStation 210j NAS 2 x 1TB Western Digital Green Caviar hard drives

I also decided that I would run Ubuntu 10.04 rather than suffering with another version of Windows. The basic setup process has gone fine. Ive got XBMC installed and have created connections to my shared music, video and photo folders on the NAS drive so that I can watch my movies, listen to music and view photos all through XBMC. I use the FTP connection for the video folder and the iTunes DAAP connection for the music.

The problem I have is that my connection to the DiskStation (which is wireless by the way) seems a little unstable and sometimes drops out during playback. I also have some intermittent problems accessing the folders through the Ubuntu OS. I understand from some basic research that I might be able to address these problems by mounting the NAS drive so that a connection is created on startup. Can someone tell me whether this is a decent solution and (if it is) how a total noob like me might be able to achieve this?

Ubuntu Networking :: Connecting To NAS - Cannot See My Synology NAS Drive On My Network

Jun 20, 2011

Having become so frustrated With the many bugs in 11.04 I have stepped backward and instead installed Ubuntu 10.10 onto my Dell laptop. Until now I have been very pleased, as nearly everything has worked well, straight out of the box. So, just as I thought I was home and dry I have noticed that I cannot see my Synology NAS drive on my network. This is doubly frustrating because my other PC, also running 10.10, has suddenly lost it's ability to see the NAS drive too. Throughout last week I used the NAS in conjunction with my Ubuntu PC without a hitch but now it's gone. The NAS is visible to both Windows and Macs it's just the Ubuntu machines that cannot use it. It is also vaguely annoying knowing that the NAS itself uses a Linux OS or maybe that could be a clue to what's wrong.

As things stand my Apple Macs can see each other, they see the Windows box, see the NAS and see the shared folders on the Ubuntu machines. The Windows machines see the Macs, each other, the NAS and the Linux shared folders. The Ubuntu machines only see the Apple Mac shares, no Windows and no other Ubuntu shared folder nor the NAS.

It is curious because the little program Avahi Zero Conf Browser can see absolutely everything on my network yet the Ubuntu GUI is proving to be the most difficult thing to network using anything other than than a web browser. Is there a concise definitive reason why Linux (Ubuntu) is so infernally difficult to network? I am not very experienced with Linux or the terminal but was hoping that this system might by now have become a little more user friendly for ordinary people.

Could there also have been something in a recent OS update that has killed off my PC running Ubuntu's ability to see the NAS where previously there has been no problem.

Programming :: Link Directories - Symlink Not Updated / Hard Link Not Supported?

Sep 6, 2010

In the ordering of files I keep I need links to directories. Sometimes I even need to move directories to new locations. I have tried using symlinks, but they become dead when I move the directory they point to. I have tried hard links, but I haven't found any Linux file system that would support hard linked directories. How can I achieve that a complex structure of directories (currently with symlinks for directories and hard links for files) keep symlinks live when directories are moved?

- is there any utility that updates symlinks when a directory is moved?

- is there any Linux filesystem that supports hard linked directories?

- is there any good Linux interface to the new NTFS (the only file system I know to support automatically updating directory links, called directory junctions)?

Ubuntu Networking :: Mount To Vista Needed For Apache - Symbolic Link Not Allowed Or Link Target Not Accessible

Apr 26, 2010

I have a problem where I'm using Ubuntu linux to mount a Windows Vista machine's USB drive and access it on the web using Apache. I did have the USB drive plugged into the Linux machine directly and that was working via the web. FollowSymLinks is on in httpd.conf

[Code]....

The mount works and I can see the files (see above) from my regular linux user account. If I make a test file in /mnt and soft link to that, I can see it on the web. So it's just the mount to the vista machine that seems to be a problem. It's supposed to be a simple read-only mount and the apache login should (I think) be able to see the same generic root access permissions.

log from apache: [Mon Apr 26 20:39:42 2010] [error] [client 99.99.99.99] Symbolic link not allowed or link target not accessible: /home/user1/pub_html/Music, referer: https://xx.xx.xx/~user1/music.html

The credentials have a login and password that matches a special read-only account on Vista. I can see the files on the system from Linux, but not via the web. As mentioned above, a different link to the same /mnt area works fine via the web. I've tried several different mount options with no success.

General :: Redhat Vs Suse On The Job?

Mar 31, 2011

I'm a Windows SysAdmin and we currently have a half dozen CentOS 5.5 machines at my current job. I also use Fedora 14 at home. I've been trying to get up to speed on Linux and feel like sticking with the RedHat derivatives as opposed to trying a new distro whenever something new comes out has really helped me.

I have a job interview coming up and it sounds like something I'd really like. They have an upgrade of VMWare from 3.5 to 4.1 in the works and virtualization is really my focus right now. Anyway the guy told me that they use SUSE and he really doesn't like RedHat. I don't remember how he described it, but he made it sound like it was too specialized and SUSE is more open.

This is the job description. Experience with MS Windows 2000, 2003 and 2008, Active Directory Architecture, deployment and group policies Red Hat and Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise server (SLES), OES NetWare (On Linux).

Experience with multiple virtualization products including VMware ESX and VMware desktop. Experience with tools used to analyze and perform bulk changes to LDAP directory content including Apache LDAP studio and MS Access. Experience with XML, LDIF, VB script., SSL and secure communications, SLP, DDNS, YAST, RPM, PAM., CRON, Sniffer Pro and Wire Shark . Is going into a SUSE environment going to screw up all the good linux mojo I have going on? I like working in Fedora/CentOS now. Is there a real difference?
