has anyone been able to connect a Linux VPN client to a safe@office 500 using pre-shared keys?From windows, I can establish a IPSec/L2TP(also PSK) connection with no issues(No third party software. Just created a new connection in XP).I have tried using StrongSwan and xl2tpd on Karmic without success.PPPd never gets launched. To me it seems like this should work given I can create a vpn connection directly from WinXP without installing any checkpoint clients.

Address unreachable, destination unreachable
However, when I ping ipv6.google.com I have no problem.
I'm currently running OpenSuSE 11.3. I'm afraid as newer versions are released they will demand more of my old PC (Dell Optiplex GX270). Also, I've heard of issues with newer Linux distributions having issues with older Intel hardware (just hearsay, not personal experience). I am running a game server on an Ubuntu 11.04 box. The game is Minecraft. The biggest (smallest?) bottleneck for my server is the read/write/access time of data on the hard disk. I feel an SSD could make a huge difference in performance.The Minecraft map is stored in individual region files that are further divided into 'chunks'. Each file is between 64KB and 10MB each (depending on how 'developed' they are). Users are crafting the world and so are constantly loading these files and editing them while playing the game. I'm hoping to have about 15-30 users on at peak times, and 2 or 3 at minimum. The server would be up 24/7.The entirety of the game directory (the map, player data, config file, plugins, etc) is less than 1GB. So I don't need a lot of storage. I will be performing daily backups of the game data to a much larger HDD on the system.Considering this scenario, would you recommend against using an SSD? I've read 'DRAM-based' SSD's do not have write limitations.

IIRC, Windows will write some BS code to a USB stick if only you
just stick it in there.
I have several encrypted partitions spanning a few disks which I'd
like if Windows didn't even know about. I can't risk Windows messing
up those partitions by scribbling some crap about how "this disk is
not yet formatted" or something right on the disk itself.
I have been googling this for a couple days, and the best I can come
up with is a couple anecdotal references about Windows writing to
the MBR of a HDD even if you don't tell it to do so.
My new Debian box is running well and stable enough for me to decide to swipe out WindowsXP altogether. I have a 40GB HDD, which has the following partition scheme (after Windows was removed and hda1 was converted to Linux native type)

As you can see, my Linux is in the 2nd logical partition hda6 which contained in the extended hda2. The 1st logical partion hda5 is the one I want to erase the data and convert to Linux filesystem in order to have more space. (Yes I can mount it ntfs-3g and use it without any problem, but I just want to say farewell to as many things Microsoft as possible) . What I'm worried about is whether it's safe to do that, without damaging the extented partition which contains the root file system for Debian.
I am using debian 5.04 + LXDE. In the past, I sometime encounter problems such as the distro broken after performed a full apt dist-upgrade or upgrade. Now, I am more conservative, I am using apt safe-upgrade.
I want to know are there anyway to do a better safe upgrade for debian without breaking the distro?

View 3 Replies View Relatedi read somewhere (I think an article by AlienBob) that you needed to make sure .tgz packages where located in a safe place as opposed to the home directory so as to prevent accidental deletion.
I have a number of .tgz packages that I have already installed and moved to the /bin/ directory for safe keeping, but its not very orderly, ya' know?
Is it safe to delete/rm these .tgz files? Im assuming that the installpkg command extracts the creamy nougat inside and puts it somewhere useful.
Also, even if it is safe to delete, what is best practice in this case? keep them forever in some isolated directory?

So the question is: which one is the safer method to lock the screen, if a user leaves the pc? Is it true, that using the [2] method is safer?Why do i think this? - The gnome-screensaver is just a "process", it could be killed. But if you use the log out/switch user function, it's "something else". Using the "switch user" function, could there be a problem like with the gnome-screensaver? Could someone "kill a process" and presto...the lock is removed?Could the GDM [??] "login windows process" [e.g.: a picture of it] get killed and the "lock" gets owned?
p.s.: if the [2] method is safer, then how can i put an icon on the GNOME panel, to launch the "switch user" action by 1 click?
I have an old hp that i installed ubuntu on and I was wondering how I can turn it into a real router. By real router I don't just mean broadcast the internet but use security software, configurations, and all the stuff normally found on a real router. What are the steps i need to take? I dont have 2 NIC's in it just one but I do have a wireless usb that I can just stick into it.
View 1 Replies View Related There are some encfs folders with private data on the server and all data is exported via nfs to all other omputers in the house.I can mount the encfs folders on another computer (using encfs command) to work with the data, but I never dared to mount it on more than one computer simultaniously, because I fear the encrypted data might get corrupted if more than one computer mount and access it at the same time.
So I want to ask about your experience: Is it safe to mount an encfs folder on several computers at the same time? All computers use "hard" and "sync" as nfs mount options to minimize risks of data loss. But can I access the folders simultaniously, or do I risk corrupting the encfs encryption and lose everything?
I have two ext3 lv's of 4GB and 10GB in my hda8 partition, and they are automounted by /dev/mapper/ in my /etc/mtab files in each of the four distros (Suse9.3, OpenSuse10.2, kubuntu7.04 and Debian Lenny 5.0.3). Since ext3 is a journalled fs I feel I ought to fsck their integrity every 3 months or so, however I don't know
a) whether they must be unmounted before running fsck,
b) whether I should use a live CD such as knoppix to run the fsck command, and
c) whether I can and/or should run fsck /dev/hda8, or whether I should somehow fsck each lv seperately?
I tried to install Ubuntu in my P3 computer so i can play with it, everything works fine but not after i reboot it. Now i got the user and password window on the desktop and drop-down-list of sessions, language, keyboard, date & Time and Shutdown button at the bottom.
Drop-down-list session:
Recovery Console
Ubuntu Desktop Edition
Ubuntu Desktop Edition (Safe Mode)
User Defined Session
With these 4 options, the third one which is the safe mode is the only option I was able to get through. Others are just desktop without toolbar or anything, right click with folder option are working though. Recovery console is just the CLI window but I don't know anything about Linux commands.
use a Live CD of Ubuntu to do all my financial transactions online, I figure thats the safest way since any virus/trojan cannot infect the Live CD?Just one question, how safe is it to use Linux as a whole for this kind of use?(I mean, Linux and all the apps are open source and written by just about anybody, so how can I be sure that even the Ubuntu Live CD doesnt have any sort of keylogger etc installed? After all, with so many lines of code, I'm sure someone could have sneaked in something like that?)

trying to create a "local network" by directly connecting an IBM Thinkpad with Debian Linux installed on it to an Alix computer running Voyager Linux. I'm following a "how to" I found to create a music server, hence the requirement. My issue is I can't get a static IP address to be configured on the Debian machine.I've trawled the net and have found the instructions about editing the /etc/network/interfaces and have tried to do this. First I tried to get DHCP working so I could connect the Debian machine to the net and this proved successful. I edited the interfaces file to look as follows:

Then I tried adding a static IP address to the machine. As this is a network purely between two machines I made up the IP addres and used 192.168.0.1 and used a NetMask calculator to give me a NetMask of 255.255.255.254 (I told the calculator there would be 2 machines on the network). I then edited the interfaces file as follows:

I re-booted the machine (ifdown eth0 followed by ifup eth0 keeps saying that eth0 hasn't been configured - a problem there that I don't understand), but during boot up time it failed to assign the Static IP address to eth0 and made me go into SU mode. To fix it I simply replaced the interface file with the static IP inputs with the file that had the DHCP entries (I'd made a copy of the DHCP file), and re-started the machine. Everthing came up fine. So the first question is how do I get a static IP address to be assigned to eth0 such that whenever I shut down and restart the machine the static IP address is always loaded?
The second question is around creating the network via the cross over cable. From what I've found via Google, all I should have to do is create a static IP address on the Debian machine and a static IP address on the Voyager machine. Once they're connected by the cross over cable they should see each other. Is that correct, or do I have to do anything else?
I am writing a TCP server in C, and the server listens to incoming client connections and accepts them. It then creates a thread to handle the client. The clients are expected to only receive data from my server and not send any data. So if I use a select() call with a recv(), I believe that the recv() will just block forever since there will not be any data coming from the client. If I use a non-blocking recv(), then this will just return a 0 which tells me nothing because the client is not expected to send any data. I am not sure if I have misunderstood some socket concepts, but I need a solution to detect when the client has disconnected so that I can close the socket and stop sending data to the client. As I understand it, simple ACKs etc are not captured by the recv(), and only data sent by the client will cause recv() to return a non-zero value, so I am not sure how to know when the client has disconnected.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI am certainly a Linux Newbie..I have a business with a network of PCs that need not get client files corrupted by viruses & other bad things from the internet...YET I would like to let my employees(who are way worse newbies than me..om Windows even...& stand good chance to mess up computers) use internet at times if they wish. My first thought was just separate side by side PCs, one to get on for Clients/business network etc, & the other to get trashed by the internet.
What I am thinking is a better alternative (& I need to know from yall who I'm sure are way beyond this newbie whether this thinking is correct) is to put something like Puppy Linux 5.0 on small memory USB flash drives & let them each have one to use for internet, simple application functions etc. Can I safely believe that running internet browsing on the flash drive with Puppy Linux booted & running as the OS is NOT going to potentially infect my windows XP business PCs with viruses etc?

I am failing to log in on a NIS client server. I input the login name and takes long to bring password prompt. It then gives an error :Login timed out after 60 seconds.
