Jun 4, 2011brand new 2 Ubantu & set up standard Ubantu compartment accessed via 1 user name only and password. 1st few times all good but now suddenly, unexpectedly password declared invalid. Had written down password so it is correct & not entry error. Not know how to reset password or bypass 'username/password log on screen' Am on an Acer 5542G with windows 7 home premium.

I looked on the internet to find a way to reset those, but all the solutions involve making a boot disk or using some peripheral. The computer I am using does not have any peripherals (only keyboard and screen) because it's an onboard computer in a robot.
Is there a way to reset the password and username without using peripherals (and without losing the information on the hard disk)?

Dec 3, 2010I realise that passwords are a good thing but I'm getting fed up having to enter a password just to get my wireless network to work every time I switch on Ubuntu or when I log out and back in again.
Seeing as there is nobody in the house that I want to keep away from the computer, is there a way to automatically sign-in to my wireless network without having that annoying key-chain popping up every time?

Now it required Admin password in order to boot from CD or USB. I tried The VMWare, but I didn't like it. Is there any way I can get around it.

I noticed that users on the machine can login into vsftpd with their username and password on the machine and go to their root dir "/home/username".Now, I want to give some people a vsftpd username and password so they can upload and download files and folders to their folder, but this folder has to be in the "/var/www/(username)" folder. I don't want them to be able to go to any other folder than their own folder like "/var", "/etc" or "/home" etc. Also I don't want them to be able to login on the machine as a user, through putty for example. They should only be allowed to acces their folder with vsftpd, nothing else.

When the computer is locked. I can smiply go to switch users. when the list of users logins are shown all i have to do is click on my user name and it allows me into my account without typing in a password. I can lock the computer manually or wait for it to time out it doesn't matter. the switch users method allows me to bypass the password protection.

It's actually prompting me, upon startup/reboot to have me insert my name and password, in what appears to be the command prompt. I am still a noob with Ubuntu and Linux in general, so I have no idea what I did to make this happen. It's not terrible and zomg if it doesn't get fixed I'll die, but it is slightly inconvenient to have to "sudo /etc/init.d/gdm start" every time I reboot my computer. When I do an automatic on wordpress it asks for ftp credentials. I don't my ftp credentials. I was not aware that I had ftp username and password. I am not sure if that means I installed the ftp server without knowing. my root password does not work on this.
I tried searching through wordpress forums but most of them show me how to set the ftp username and password in wp-config file so that it doesn't ask for it every time.
