General :: Read The Kernel Details ( Size, Start And End Location) From Flash?
Nov 8, 2010
I have a linux system which has a NAND flash. The compressed kernel is flashed into the NAND flash. On boot up, the kernel is uncompressed, copied to RAM and runs from RAM. Is it possible for me to read the kernel information from NAND flash such as size, start and end location and version?
I have been looking for this in the net, but did not find any answers so far...
I have tried the following: The compressed kernel lies in the 4MB partition of the flash. So I tried: dd if=/dev/mtdblock1 of=zImage But this copies the complete 4MB partition. I need to copy only the zImage. So I need to know its size.

I was attempting to reformat a 16GB MicroSD card in my camera when the battery died mid-way. After that, any time I try to read the card in my camera, it gives me a "Card Error" and does not allow me to reformat it in my camera.
So, I thought I would plug the camera in to the laptop with it set to host the card as media when plugged in as USB, in an attempt to fix the formatting issue.
However, when I plug it in to my linux machine, it does not register as a device (e.g., /dev/sda) due to some errors, therefore I cannot reformat it. Essentially, I think I need to fix the partition table but I'm not sure how to when it doesn't register as a device. code...

I have downloaded the newest most stable Linux kernel, 2.6.33.2.
I thought I would test this using VirtualBox. So I create a dynamically sized harddisk of 4 GB. And installed CentOS 5.3 with just the minimum packages.
I setup the make menuconfig with just the default settings.
After that I ran make and got the following error:
The amount of space I have left is:
My virtual size is 4 GB, but the actual size is 3.5 GB.
How much size should I give when compiling and installing a Linux kernel? Are there any guidelines to follow when doing this? This is my first time, so just experimenting with this.

I've developed a tiny webserver for home automation out of an ALIX 1D, and based on a debian lenny. It runs very smoothly and is now able to operate quite a lot of different equipment from a webapp. But i'm not sure how I should handle the compact flash, regarding read/write limitations. From what I've read the partitioning should be ext2, which would disallow the journalisation of the system. A utility to 'flatten' the repartition of write cycles exists, would it be relevant to use if the partition is ext2 ?
I will also disable all logging in execution mode (a debug mode will provide the logs). Is there any other parameters I have to take into account for maximum reliability (i.e. does the system randomly write in some files for various and potentially turned off purposes)? As for the mysql database, it's not important data, and it's actually reconstructed every time the server boots. Given this, is there a way to store the db in RAM rather than in a file? I'm not sure it's the right place to ask, but I sometimes see redirection to here from stack overflow.

Watching the BBC iPlayer bigscreen (URL>..) in Firefox 3.5 with full screen plays smoothly. But any other combination for example...iPlayer on Opera 10 or Channel 4 Ondemand (4oD) in Firefox then the flash video playback is very stuttering, horizontal tears, just one still image per second, etc.I want to investigate the reasons for the poor playback but where do I start ? cant be hardware because FF is ok at least for iPlayer.
Maybe 4oD has some different encoding of video compared with BBC but how can I tell what the encoding is? How come Opera using the same flash shared object has difficulty but not FF? (I've raised a bug with Opera a few months ago but no joy so far)

Does anyone know the kernel-headers location, or how to determine that location, in Fedora 13? I'm installing vmware-tools and it's prompting for it. /usr/include/ and /usr/include/linux/ were revealed to have many header files, as shown by doing rpm -ql kernel-headers
However the installer rejected these locations. My only guess as to why is because they're not where the currently-running kernel has them. I also tried /usr/src/kernels/(kernelversion).fc13.i686/include/ with no luck...

is there a way to retrieve the processor model without taking information from bios? I don't know which processor is really mounted. I want to set up the right processor timing, but I don't know the processor type. Every time I change the timing for the processor in BIOS another processor type is determined (I should be an Athlon XP +1500, I think, but I don't know really).
I think with less /proc/cpuinfo the results depends on the timing that is set in bios. So could you tell me how I can find out which processor is really mounted?

I am sure this has been covered before, however I do not know which terms to sue for searching for this, so I will try and explain it.
I have a program that I run at startup to connect me to my work VPN, specifically the Cisco VPN client. When running the program, it prompts me for my username and password. I would like to be able to automate the login process by piping the username and password into the program everytime it starts up (username and password cannot be passed as arguments to the program)
Something like echo username | echo password | vpn_script

It's many years since introducing of installation of Linux live CDs like Ubuntu from USB flash drives. I never been able to use such services on my 2GB KingStone flash drive, because it's sector size is 2048 and the famous linux error: "Not all ... support more than 512B sector size". Although I formatted my flash drive many times and even erased the whole partition table and cleared all flash contents with 0xFF values but it still has sector size of 2048.I want to know where the hell those softwares like "USB Startup Disk Creator" in ubuntu and kubuntu and fdisk in almost all linux distro's get to know that the sector size is 2048?

I was having trouble getting X.Org to work with the video card in a recently acquired laptop, so I decided to try to probe around the configuration of a Linux Live CD to figure out how to set up my kernel. I chose the Sabayon 5.0 Live DVD because it was the only one that I could find that was the same or newer than the 2.6.32 kernel I have installed on the laptop right now. Of course, the DVD booted right into GNOME without issue, unlike the hangs and crashes that I had been getting. So, I want to figure out what kernel driver this Live DVD is currently using, but I don't know how to. hwinfo doesn't shed any light on the matter, and lspci -vnn doesn't list a driver for my video device, though both methods correctly identify that I have an Intel 855GM video processor. How can I find out this information?
