General :: Flash Videos Stuttering / Where Do I Start Investigating
Feb 10, 2010
Watching the BBC iPlayer bigscreen (URL>..) in Firefox 3.5 with full screen plays smoothly. But any other combination for example...iPlayer on Opera 10 or Channel 4 Ondemand (4oD) in Firefox then the flash video playback is very stuttering, horizontal tears, just one still image per second, etc.I want to investigate the reasons for the poor playback but where do I start ? cant be hardware because FF is ok at least for iPlayer.
Maybe 4oD has some different encoding of video compared with BBC but how can I tell what the encoding is? How come Opera using the same flash shared object has difficulty but not FF? (I've raised a bug with Opera a few months ago but no joy so far)

i've been experiencing an issue with audio playback for certain flash videos that stream from the web. most play smoothly, like the videos at videos. others have this strange background noise that is only present when there is audio (usually on news websites that host their own videos). when there is sound, there is a strange stuttering noise that disappears during the silent pauses.
here's a perfect example: [url]
the videos video at the top plays just fine. if you scroll down and watch the other video in the small box, you'll hear the stuttering. i have fedora 14 kde, adobe flash player 64 bit preview release 3 and rpm fusion codecs installed. the problem is also present in fedora 14 with gnome, same setup. the problematic videos play without the stuttering in ubuntu.

I play a flash video, and then play music natively the sound doesn't work. Or I can play flash and have sound but not play music with sound that's on my PC. Or I play my music on my PC, say one song, and the other is high pitched distorted, and rings. I have to exit the program and start it again for it to play nice. How do I resolve this most irritating bug?

Is it normal for the flash player in Ubuntu 10.04 to be quite slow, and unreliable? I know I'm only on a Samsung nc10 netbook, but that should be enough oompff.Seems if I have ..... open in two windows (chrome or firefox, same issue), and then close one of the windows, it crashes all flash videos. Sometimes it will even crash on its ownHere are my current plugins:Default Plug-in - Version: 1Provides functionality for installing third-party plug-ins

I used to save flash videos by going to /tmp so that i can watch them later, without having to stream (and i'm not talking about ..... or anywhere else where it's against the ToU to save videos). As many of you already know, videos are no longer saved in /tmp with flashplayer 10.2 (or they're delted immediately). I'm using Google Chrome and I've tried looking in the Cache and I've tried all kinds of things and i can't figure out how to save videos.I would really appreciate any help you guys can give me. I wouldnt mind downgrading my version of flash (actually i'd love to do that if i knew how) but chrome seems to have flash built-in or something (?) so i have no idea how to do that.
I found a script that allows me to open whatever flash video i have open in browser with vlc, but vlc won't allow me to save as or anything. The site said that i can change the parts of the script to say mplayer to open with mplayer but i tried that and the script just stopped working. This is the script:
Code:
#!/bin/bash
FLASH_TMP=`ls /tmp | grep Flash*`

WRT "no flash youtube video"? OS is debian wheezy with iceweasel 31.80. I have completely removed adobe flash (I think). I have installed the html5 video everywhere addon, and have allowed youtube to set cookies. However, when I go to youtube and attempt to play a vid, noscript prompts me to allow googlevideo.com scripting. I am somewhat reluctant to use any google services, and am puzzled that youtube, which proclaims html5 as default (now), would need the googlevideo service? Note that I have removed flash because of its past insecurities. I guess the real question: "Does youtube (or iceweasel) really support html5?

First answer this: Do you have a video card with an HDMI port on it? If you aren't sure you can look for this: (FWI its close to the same size as a VGA port) If you answered yes, follow these steps and hopefully it will solve the ..... Flash issue. (Fedora 14 KDE instructions)
Kicker Menu > Computer > System Settings > Multimedia
Select "Phonon" on the left. With Phonon selected, click on "Audio Output" at the top and notice the right box fills with all your audio devices listed in order of which device is default starting from the top. Notice the "(HDMI)" next to one of them lol? Simply click the HDMI device and then click "Defer" a few times. This should solve your Flash problems permanently. he reason why this happens is HDMI is both video AND audio. If both are being processed through a video card, theres nothing slowing it down for normal playback.

I've noticed a weird thing with flash:
1. When playing flash videos in firefox, they'll flicker with black screen flashing for a split second over the video(This continues throughout the video)
2. However, if I do either of the following, the flicker goes away (only while doing one of these actions):
a. Continually move the mouse over the video (i.e. move back and forth in a "mouseover")
b. Put the mouse over the scrubber circle (which shows time lapsed and allows dragging to change location in video) such that the "hand" cursor appears. Once the cursor changes back to a pointer, it flickers again. but as long as I move the mouse over the scrubber circle, it'll stop the flickering (even without moving the mouse anymore) until the circle passes beyond the cursor again.

After a fresh installation of 11.3 KDE, I followed the Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide and I also used the mmcheck to follow every advice and install packages that were recommended.I also spent a few evening this week digging everywhere I could to get sound when playing videos in Firefox without any success. I have the Shockwave Flash 10.1 r102 extension installed in Firefox. I also tested in Chrome that also had the flash plugin and I still had no sound.

I am having a little problem with my flash player, the video plays fine but I can't get any sound. The sound card works properly with any other application, such as Amarok, but not with flash videos and my hardware is mostly Intel witch is linux-friendly from what I know, so I guess that it isn't a driver problem. Therefore, I switched from windows to linux only a couple days ago, so it may be a newbie issue as well.
I'm using Kubuntu 10.04 64-bit with HDA Intel audio chip set with flash player 10.0.45.2. If anyone have a solution/explanation,

I have some flash(.swf) movies that I created and I would like to create one longer file with these files. I thought that avidemux could handle flash videos, but I get this error if I try to open it: "Could not open the file". Is there any other way to join 2 flash videos? I have noticed that I cant even play the files on vlc.

when i try to play a flash video the visual works but not the audio and totem tells me i need the suitable codec which it says is gstreamer-bad and when i attempt to install it, it says that it conflicts with gstreamer-really-bad but if i remove gstreamer-really-bad and install gstreamer-bad totem gives me an internal data stream error instead and even visual won't work. so i ran totem--debug and this is the terminal output with gstreamer-bad when trying to play flash video.
** message: error: internal data stream error. gstflvdemux.c(52: gst_flv_demux_loop (): /play/decodebin0/flvdemux0: stream stopped, reason error
i also ran totem --debug with gstreamer-really-bad installed and this is the output then.
totem --debug

Ok I installed VLC & greasemonkey on YDL 6.2. It works like a charm and I can watch ..... videos in full or small screen. It doesn't work for any other sites though. How can I make it work for all flash videos. I installed something else that searches for scripts but no matter how many I add it won't work for any sites flash videos but ...... I want to be able to play all flash videos. Also since the ps3 xmb is only good for watching flash videos for any site. What does it use? Something has to work with the IDM cell processors. I was wondering if we could run whatever the ps3 xmb uses to play flash on ydl?

When viewing videos on [URL], most other websites, and when trying to run certain flash games, the flash applet will not display (though the audio will play). Instead of displaying the flash applet, there will be a grey box where the flash video or applet would normally be.
This problem occurs on Firefox and Chromium, but not on Opera.
My Specs are as follows:
Distro: PCLinuxOS 2010 (32-bit)
flash-player-plugin: 10.1-2pclos2010
firefox: 3.6.6-1pclos2010
swfdec has never been installed (to my knowledge)
I did a lot of investigating about the problem but have turned up no solutions thus far. Here are my results. Flash videos and applets which allow access to the settings menu (like ..... played from their website) do not display, however flash videos and applets which do NOT allow access to the settings menu (including ..... videos embedded in other websites) WILL display. Reinstalling flash-player-plugin and firefox through synaptic does not solve the problem (though note that PCLOS works with rpm files, not deb files. apt4rpm does not support the remove --purge operation, however reinstalls are said to overwrite custom configs with stock ones.) Creating a new firefox profile and/or starting FFox in safe-mode does not solve the problem Creating another user and running FFox from that user will properly display flash videos Comparing default plugins between my main user and new user shows that there is no difference. So this likely rules out a defective extension or plugin binary. Deleting ~/tmp/plugtmp* folders when FFox is closed does not solve the problem. Removing the ~/.macromedia and ~/.adobe folders does not solve the problem. (have checked permissions between the new test user and main user, and they are equivalent) Downloading libflashplayer.so from the Adobe website and copying it to /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins has no effect on the problem.
I'm thinking that there might be somewhere else that flash stores configurations for my user, and that maybe the settings there are corrupted and would need to be purged. However frantic googling has turned up nothing useful so far.

I've been playing around with the latest RC of 11.4. Overall, it works great, but just have 1 issue. No flash videos have audio. Video works just fine. I've tried installing both the flash-player package so that it loads the official 32-bit plugin through ndiswrapper, and tried downloading the Adobe Square 64-bit plugin and installing it. Doesn't make a difference, either way I have working video but not audio. Audio itself on the laptop works with no issues, I listen to Amarok all the time on it. Laptop in question is a Dell Latitude E5500. I've also had Debian Wheezy and Kubuntu 10.10 on here, both had no issues.
